Virtual Connection:

It’s What Every New Mom Needs! Today’s moms are blessed with an incredible variety of online communities: social networks, forums, Facebook groups, blogs and message boards, all offering the possibility of connecting with other moms anywhere, anytime on countless topics. You’re the first of your girlfriends to have a baby, and you are not sure if your newborn’s poop is the right colour? Your toddler wakes up with a strange red rash on his tummy, and you’re concerned it would spread? Your hair is falling out, and you need to know when it will stop before you become completely bald! Moms to rescue! Even though you read every page of Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Maze’s bestseller What to Expect When You are Expecting, reality has now sunk in. You now have that tiny baby who will not stop crying (and neither can you for that matter!) Clearly, you need somewhere to turn. It is then you discover your local Facebook Mommy Group offering support, advice, friendship, and plenty of virtual hugs

FOURTH ANNUAL

2015!

SPECIAL FEATURE

During those middle-of-the-night feedings, I remember having the lights turned down low, but high enough so I could still read Facebook posts. Thankfully, I was soon invited to join one of those mommy groups. Scrolling through the posts helped me keep my eyes open, while I gently rocked my little man back to sleep. What did I do when my youngest had an awful diaper rash that would not go away? I turned to my mommy group. If I wanted to know which baby carrier or umbrella stroller everyone loved, I would post the question and await responses. When I have a free afternoon to go to the park, I post to see if anyone else wanted to join me. When I’m feeling down and I just need to tell someone (but do not want to paste it on my Facebook wall), I go to my group. And when I want to share my good days with some of my favourite people, I turn to my mommy group – of course! I have always felt connected with a great group of mom’s right on the other side of my screen. It is not unusual to see a mom post to find out who might be up in the middle of the night tending to her baby. Such posts rarely go unanswered.

And yet while you raise your family, it is important to have some close connections with others who are in the same stage of life as you are. As you read this, chances are you are wondering if there could be drama. The answer is YES! When you put a bunch of hormonal women in the same virtual room, you can expect some occasional drama. It is important to remember that we have been part of each other’s world for so many years. Through the process we are able to see through our different opinions and perspectives. In my group, we understand that we all want what is best for each other and to be each other’s cheerleader. Beauty Basics: Skincare Tips for Busy Moms

Taking care of your skin is very important. The foundation to healthy glowing skin is a regular skincare routine that is easy and simple to follow. One should not rely on cosmetics to achieve a flawless complexion as cosmetics are used to enhance. The following steps will help you achieve a healthy daily skincare routine and should take approximately a few minutes to complete.

to clogged pores. How to use: Apply to damp face with clean fingers or a damp cotton round and gently massage into the skin then rinse clean with cool water.

Step 3: Toner Toner is used to remove any last remaining cosmetic residues, and works to tone and tighten the skin for a lasting refreshed feeling. Toners are available in lotion or spray mist. How to use: Simply apply to a makeup sponge or apply a light even mist to face and neck.

Step 4: Moisturizer

Step 2: Cleanse

Day Cream - During the day your skin is exposed to many harmful elements such as pollution, weather, UV rays and cosmetics so the main purpose of a day cream is to moisturize and protect. Day creams are formulated to be light weight and easily absorbed into the skin. Night Cream - During the night, your skin works hard to regenerate and restore itself so the main purpose of a night cream is to moisturize and repair. Night creams are often a much creamier and thicker consistency as they are designed to penetrate the skin throughout the night. How to use: Apply with clean fingers and gently massage into the skin in a upward motion.

Cleaning your face at the end of your day loosens and removes cosmetics, dull dry cells and impurities – all factors that contribute

Step 5: Eye Cream or Serum

Step 1: Exfoliate Exfoliation is one of the keys to great skin and is used to gently lift away dull, dry cells and impurities from your skin. This step can be included in your regular skincare routine one to three days per week. How to use: Simply apply to a damp face with clean fingers or a moist a sponge.

Weekday Mornings at

Eye creams can reduce puffiness and under eye circles, eliminate fine lines and provide moisture. How to use: Applying an eye cream or serum daily to the eye area will help overall in slowing down the aging process and thereby extending the time before wrinkles begin to appear.

It is best to keep your products stored out of the washroom, away from sunlight, moisture, humidity, and heat. Store your skincare and cosmetics in a clear tray that you can easily grab when getting ready in the morning. •

Erica Durance For seven seasons she played Superman’s love interest, Lois Lane, in the hit series Smallville. Canadian actress, Erica Durance, is now saving lives on the medical drama series Saving Hope. She grew up in Three Hills, Alberta and moved to Vancouver, after her high school graduation, to pursue acting. Today, Durance is juggling more than just playing Dr. Alex Reid and producing the series. She is also a new mom, having given birth to a son in February. Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine recently had a chance to sit down with the multi-talented actress and producer to talk about her exciting new role at home. UBT: What are some of the things you are learning about your son? ED: Everyday is new and exciting because there is just so much development going on. I see certain threads of personality that have been part of him since he came into this world, and other

aspects that are showing up. I find it incredibly stimulating and fascinating.

WANTED

*ROCKSTAR BUSINESS PARTNER* A super mom who wants to make money while staying home with the kids. A people-lover with experience in marketing, teaching & public speaking. A "go-getter" who is keen on personal development, like me, who loves helping others.

Does this sound like you? E-mail your resume to:

elainefoundmagic@gmail.com

My name is Elaine and I'm a mom of two who also works graphics for "live" TV. After years of working 4am shifts & several group layoffs in a shrinking industry, I'm relieved to find a brilliant way to create extra, residual income while working part-time.

UBT: As a new mom, what has been a challenge for you so far? ED: I think it is the fact that the life I built before baby is still going on. I know other mothers can relate. Question is: How do you balance the two worlds and continue work commitments while you have that little obsession at home? My son’s caregiver will mention some things he did during the day that I missed and it was a first. And I try to have perspective. I think you just have to keep reminding yourself: there will be many firsts. UBT: You are acting and producer on the show. How are you finding that balance between being a new mom; having family time and managing your demanding work? ED: I think it is about having people around you to support you. Those who will remind you to stay focused and keep perspective, forgive yourself and not become irrational with your desire to “simply be at home”. You are in your post-partum too, so there are always those natural hormones. I have a desire to be at home all the time, so I don’t miss ANY moments. It is just part of the human DNA as a mother – to

protect her child. I think it’s important that we have dialogue with other mothers (women who we trust) about it, so we can really embrace the female community for understanding. It is also important to have a partner in your life. I know I do. My husband, is very supportive and helpful. He is someone who will be there through the ebbs and flows of wherever I am, because it can be overwhelming. I don’t know if there is a specific formula to finding balance. It changes each week. I just try my best. When at home, I try to be with my son as much possible, and have a good experience there, but also not beat myself up, if everything is not ideal. UBT: Do you think having children changed your perspective on being a celebrity? ED: I had a very normal childhood and that is the kind of childhood I want for my kids. It allows them to have a fuller experience of themselves. I have never particularly wanted to be in the hub of activity, where the spotlight is, so that has not changed for me. I have become more resolved in my desire to create the right environment for my family. I have always enjoyed acting for the sake of acting. All the other things that come with that are not attractive to me. It is not as if I am trying to make a hypocritical statement. It is about my desire to create a simple life for my family. UBT: Let’s talk about your career bucket list. What do you want to do in the next five to ten years? ED: I would like to look into directing and a different way of storytelling. So if I get to do that in any capacity, I will feel very excited and satisfied. It would be nice to branch out into something more independent. UBT: What about your personal bucket list? ED: Would like to do more travelling and get lost in Europe somewhere for a very long time. I would also like to go back to school and study, and be completely outside of this spectrum. It sounds really cheezy but one of the reasons I want to do those things is because I want to expand myself. And I believe the only way to do that, is to expand something whether it is visually or intellectually. I am involved in a couple of charities and looking to become more immersed in those causes, and see where that goes. I think the older we get, the desire to give a little bit more grows. It is about working to make it a better place so that we can say life is a gift; I was granted that gift, and I gave back because of it. •

Understanding Infertility:

Success Rate Varies With Age For many couples, getting pregnant is easy yet some couples are not so fortunate. For the latter, it can be the source of ongoing frustration and disappointment. Infertility rate in BC is like the rest of Canada and North America: 1 in 6 couples. The problem, which did not get much attention in the past, is now hitting the spotlight in more recent years. Thankfully, the issue causing turmoil for some couples, has been gradually brought to light at doctor’s offices and on talk shows and popular TV shows. Some readers will remember the infertility challenges faced by such lead characters as Sex in the City’s Charlotte and Harry; and Friend’s Monica and Chandler, who faced a similar journey. Add to all that, more and more celebrity parents openly sharing their struggles to conceive. There are also cases of infertility for parents who had a child and conceived with no prior complications — only to have to deal with challenges later on; with getting pregnant a second time. Secondary infertility is the inability to get pregnant, or carry

a baby to term, after conceiving and birthing a child without reproductive assistance. The term infertility typically refers to a lack of conception after a reasonable period of sexual intercourse without contraception (one year for women under 35 and six months for women over 35). In Canada, roughly 16% of couples experience infertility. A glimmer of hope in all of this is the fact that there are options and medical help for couples experiencing infertility.

What Causes Infertility? There are many potential causes of infertility, and fertility problems can affect either the man or the woman. However, it is not always possible to identify the cause. Infertility factors can be traced to

either the man or woman; or some combination. Such factors can include: • Decrease in fertility rate after age 40 in women and/or poor quality of semen in men • Problems producing eggs (which shows up when a woman has no period/menstrual cycle, or regular one) • Sexually-transmitted infection (STI), like Chlamydia (which can cause blockages in the fallopian tubes) • Problems in the uterus (like fibroids or polyps) • Problems with the fallopian tubes (like missing tubes or blockages) • Endometriosis (excess of tissue that gathers around the reproductive organs) • Hormonal imbalances • Early menopause (before age 40) According to Beth Taylor, fertility doctor at Olive Fertility Centre in Vancouver, fertility is always decreasing in women and drops dramatically after 40. Men’s fertility doesn’t really start to change until after 40. She points out that most of her patients are dealing with primary infertility. About 25% of the couples are in secondary category. “Fertility success rates varies with age. Out of the couples under 35, 90 percent will have success. For those between 36-40, 70 percent will be successful getting pregnant. For those couples over over 40, the success rate drops to 50 percent. Doing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) yields the highest success rate”. The growing awareness about infertility is helping those couples affected. Resources and options are becoming more readily available and couples are able to get much-needed guidance and encouragement. Couples facing the infertility challenge are encouraged to reach out for support from friends, family and healthcare professionals. •

One Woman’s Story: I have secondary infertility. My husband and I have been trying to conceive our second child; it’s been a long and difficult 16 months, both mentally and physically. Being able to grow life within our womb is what women are physically designed for. Not being able to do that is a devastating blow, regardless how many children you may already have. We are waiting for referral appointment to another specialist and hoping to have our second baby in my arms by the end of 2016. Read more of my story on the Urbanbaby & Toddler blog ~ Sarah G. Doing Laundry More Efficiently: Saving Time and Money Too!

With your children participating in soccer, hockey, dance or football you have no doubt had your share of sweaty clothing to deal with. And you probably want to wash these dirty garments as quickly and efficiently as you can – to get rid of any lingering odours in your home. In this day of technological-advanced washers and dryers, many of us take washing clothes for granted. Just load the washer and press all the right buttons – it’s that simple! Right? According to experts at Trail Appliances. There are several eco-friendly and cost-effective ways to do laundry efficiently.

static and speed up drying times by 25% or more to save you time and money. These all-natural dryer balls can be used with all of your laundry as an eco-friendly and cost-effective replacement for fabric softeners and dryer sheets which contain chemicals and can leave a residue on your clothing. Dryer balls will gently soften your cloth diapers and are safe to use with many brands.

Reduce your Detergent More detergent doesn’t mean a better clean. Most of British Columbia has “soft water,” which has a low mineral content that easily creates suds from your laundry detergent. Many detergents are made for harder water that does not easily create suds. Try using only half the recommended amount of detergent to leave your clothes cleaner and with less soap residue.

Whether you need a large-capacity or a compact front-load washer, Trail Appliances has a great selection to choose from. After the new baby arrives, parents are often astounded at the amount of laundry that needs to be done daily and weekly. Then along comes baby number two and three. As the family expands, so do the piles of laundry!

Fuller is Better

High-efficiency front-loading washers use significantly less water and energy than older models, so you can save money over time on your water and electricity bills.

If you own a front-load washing machine, be sure to fill it up with clothing unless it has a half-load option. Many front-load washing machines work best when filled. The clothes get clean by the tumbling action. An important tip to remember clothes shrink when they absorb water, so you can put more in than you think, which is true of all washing machines.

Separate to Dry Don’t underestimate the importance of separating fabrics when putting them in the dryer. Cotton dries at a different speed than wool, polyester and other synthetics. Drying multiple fabric types in a single dryer load creates static in clothing.

Those who are expecting their first child and proactively invest in the right washer/dryer combination, often consider it to be one of the best decisions they ever made. It is something they think about as they make their way, yet again, on the beaten path to (the all too-familiar) laundry room! Thankfully you have access to experts at Trail Appliances who can help guide you in making the right choices for your family. For more information, visit one of Trail Appliance’s eight locations in B.C. or visit: www.trailappliances.com. •

DIY Remedies for

Colds and Flu

As we head into cold and flu season, think twice before reaching for antibacterial wipes or soap! Here are easy, effective, affordable, do-it-yourself recipes to clean and disinfect. Did you know that there is no evidence that antibacterial products actually do a better job than regular soap in a household setting? So avoid them unless you work in a hospital. Why? Overuse of antibacterial ingredients like triclosan is helping create superbugs. We are all learning that our increasing obsession with avoiding germs could actually be making us sick.

What is Triclosan? Triclosan is used in cleansers, antiperspirants/deodorants, toothpastes and hand sanitizers as a preservative and antibacterial agent. This ingredient is toxic to fish and wildlife and can interfere with hormone function. Avoiding Triclosan can be tricky because it is used in so many everyday products such as

soaps, countertops, garden hoses, garbage bags, socks, laundry products, and facial tissues.

How to Shop Smarter: • Avoid anything labelled “anti-bacterial”. • Avoid products with triclosan in the ingredient list. • Avoid wearing colognes and perfumes. Some fragrance • •

ingredients can trigger allergies and asthma and some are harmful to fish and other wildlife. Choose products that list ingredients and plant-based ingredients. Choose products with ECOLOGO or Green Seal labels. ...Continued on page 19

Santa Savings:

Make a Holiday Budget Having a happy holiday season without that money stress is possible by planning ahead. When I was little, I recall my mother having a special gift envelope filled with cash she saved for purchasing Christmas and birthday gifts. That practice really had an impression on me. Saving ahead and paying cash for gifts will make the experience of selecting gifts for your loved ones that much more enjoyable. When you set a budget to spend for each person, and use the cash saved in advance, you can take advantage of sales on items on your lists. Consider also the extra money spent during the holiday season on parties, food, drinks and going out for meals which can strain the family budget. By cutting back on other nonessentials, you can enjoy all the celebrations without debt. During a recent conversation with a friend we got talking about what to get the children in our lives on special occasions. We came up with a brilliant idea. In our children’s playroom, we have lots of toys which our children play with. Yet while putting away the countless toys so many times, we realized that the children would be just fine with less “stuff”. Children crave engagement with people, especially their parents, so find an activity that is age appropriate for your child, which can be a great gift. Consider tickets to the ballet; aquarium; theatre; sporting event or museum. How about a home-made ticket for a day with Mom and/or Dad? We have twins, so this individual time is incredibly valuable with each of our boys. Many children will receive money for Christmas from relatives and friends. As a parent, we can use this opportunity to educate our children about money and develop values around it. It is a good habit to start saving at least a portion of gift money to

MAKE THE MOST OF TODAY. AND START THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW.

demonstrate discipline, budgeting, and even prepare your child for the income taxes they will pay in the future. Investing gift money in an RESP can help your child afford postsecondary education and graduate with less debt. Think about the potential of putting away a portion of the gift money your child receives, every year for 18 years. Take some time to sit down with your financial advisor to learn about savings plans most beneficial for your family. By having a financial plan in place, you will be better prepared for unexpected expenses and the future. As your child grows older, you can also talk about that plan to help them learn about budgeting. Whenever they put a portion of their gift money towards savings, you can teach them about the fun things that they can get with the gift money left over, like family time at your local pool. • Angela and her husband live in Maple Ridge and have three children: three year old twins, and a one year old daughter. ...Continued from page 14 If you live or work with children, non-toxic disinfectants are even more important. Children are closer to the ground and they have an “exploratory nature”. And we all know how younger children tend to put everything in their mouths. One way to get off the antibacterial crazy train is to make your own soap, hand sanitizer, cleaner and disinfectant.

“We don’t cease to play because we grow old, we grow old because we cease to play” G.B Shaw

Liquid Hand or Body Soap Add to soap dispenser (even the foaming kind)

1. ¾ cup (187.5 ml) water 2. ¼ cup (62.5 ml) liquid castile soap (unscented or scented with essential oils; available at most health food stores or organic grocers)

Hand Sanitizer Mix and store in a squeeze bottle. Keep a batch in your diaper bag, child’s backpack, at your desk or in your purse or car.

1. ¼ cup (62.5 ml) pure aloe gel 2. ½ cup (125 ml) rubbing alcohol 3. 5 to 8 drops tea tree or thyme essential oil 4. Optional: add 2tbsp (30 ml) vegetable glycerin to combat the alcohol’s drying effect

Disinfectant Spray 1. Transfer store-bought hydrogen peroxide to a dark spray bottle (it’s sensitive to sunlight)

2. Unlike chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water and is kind to the environment. Did you know eco or oxygen bleach is really diluted hydrogen peroxide?

3. On their own, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are each strong germ killers. Used in combination, they’re even better — 10 times more effective than disinfecting with either substance alone and more effective than bleach in the kitchen. Mixing them together cuts their germkilling power, but using one after the other can work really well. •

Helping Your Child Thrive in the Classroom

Every child is unique so it is easy to understand why there are several factors that can help or hinder your child’s success in the classroom. By being a keen observer and good listener you can work together with your child’s teacher, to ensure the best outcomes and most importantly, help foster the love of learning in the process.

Not Paying Attention in Class

Assessing the Learning Environment

There is nothing more frustrating and embarrassing than to be told by a teacher that your child won’t listen in class. You are eager to know what to do, but where do you begin?

Here are some factors to discuss with your child’s teacher:

To help your child pay attention in class from preschool, kindergarten and grade school, the first thing to do is find out about any distractions. Start by having a conversation with your child, and listen for clues that point to why they might be distracted or simply disinterested. Resist the urge to “tell” your child what to do; how to behave; or what is expected of them. Just listen. Once you figure out what the underlying issue is, it will be much easier to address the problem.

• Ensure that the lessons are interactive so your child is given

• •

ample opportunity to ask questions; participate; do hands-on activities, and work in groups. The more your child is engaged with the material; the more focus there will be. Make sure that your child sits where they are most likely to pay attention. For example, some children prefer the front of the classroom while others want to sit away from noisy classmates. Your child may need to move around, sitting on a exercise ball helps keep some children more alert, and satisfies the need for movement.

• Children's eyes grow the most from birth to age 8

Annual check–ups during this time are KEY in making sure that eye health, vision and muscles develop properly.

• There is so much more to an eye exam then just checking to see if vision is 20/20

80% of learning happens through vision. Children with perfect sight can still have an undiagnosed vision problem that leads to difficulties with learning.

Keeping Up With the Pace Once you have determined that there are no significant distractions in the classroom, ask your child if there is anything in particular that makes them feel bored. Once you have an idea of what is not appealing to your child, communicate with the teacher to find solutions that will get your child more engaged.

be struggling to follow along. If so, talk over your concerns with the teacher. Does your child finish his or her work before other classmates? If this is the case, it may be that once your child’s work is done, he or she turns to her classmates for a little distraction. Ask the teacher if your child can help other classmates do their work. Keep re-evaluating your child’s situation every six months, to identify any new challenges. You don’t have to do this alone; your child’s teacher is there to help, and you can request to have the school’s learning specialist devise a plan suited to your child’s learning needs.

Over scheduling children is a modern epidemic and worth considering. If your child has little or no downtime – and by downtime, I mean “unstructured play” – he or she will be challenged to focus in class.

• Does your child have play dates with classmates after

school at least twice a week? Invite your child’s classroom friends to your home. Children who have time to play and chat after school, will not have a strong need to socialize in class. Does your child have time to do absolutely nothing for at least an hour each day? If not, chances are he or she is simply too busy. It is important for children to assimilate what they learn and experience throughout the day.

Keep having meaningful conversations with your child. Listen closely when he or she shares likes and dislikes about school. Keep the dialogue open about how your child’s day went at school. If you need more help, consult an occupational therapist. If the problem persists, you may want to get an educational assessment done by a psychologist who can help you determine the type of school and learning style best suited for your child. •

Q: Our kids (ages 7 and 9) are now all settled into the school year but getting them to do their ‘homework’ has been a big challenge. How can we make this easier for all of us? Patti & Mark O. North Vancouver JR: Great question! I recommend starting with a discussion on the expectations you have with each one of them as well as the school’s expectations. Ask for your child’s input and validate any concerns they may have. Remember, children don’t always think of the ‘bigger picture’ like most adults do. They usually just think of the present moment and don’t feel like being bothered with another chore. I also encourage parents and children to collaborate in creating a schedule and/or calendar. Schedule in time for homework, activities, family time as well as your children’s ‘free time’. This can also help them understand how to accept and organize all of their responsibilities as individuals, family members and partners in the community.

Q: My three school-age children are involved in sports and after-school activities. I want them to become more independent in preparing their equipment and ‘stuff’ needed for these activities, but they don’t do it, So I end up doing it all for them which is becoming exhausting. It will be another VERY long school year. Help me please! Candice D. Toronto

“everything that has to be done” so they have visuals and can better understand what is required. Let them know what YOU are willing to do and not willing to do any longer. Then ask your children if they just want to prepare their own stuff or prefer to do it together as a team. Bringing awareness to the responsibilities, participation and effort required, helps to build teamwork skills in children.

Q: My two children go to bed at different times. One is at 8:00pm, while the other is at 9:00pm. My younger child says it’s ‘unfair’. I feel it is just too late for him. How can I make this work? Amar S. Surrey JR: A very effective technique I’ve used with many families is doing the ‘bedtime routine’ together with all the children. Then spend a little ‘quiet’ time with each member of the family (like talking, reading stories or cuddling) right before bedtime. Discuss the order of who gets ‘quiet time’ first. Start with the younger child who goes to bed earlier and while you are doing this, the older child can do a quiet activity in his room so they do not disrupt the younger child. Then when it’s time to say goodnight to the older child, spend a little quiet time together. • Julie is a mom, Early Childhood Consultant and owner of ‘Miss Behaviour: parenting coach & consulting services’, the children’s behavior & discipline specialists! JR: Sounds like a lot of work Candice! You can definitely ask your children for help and contribution. Encourage them to take part in preparing the needed items for their activities. Create a list (using pictures ) of

SPOTLIGHT

UrbanMom

Mia R • Kamloops, BC Alesana, 10 months old

1. What is the best part about being a mom? Watching my daughter grow and teaching her new things. It was so exciting for all three of us when learned how to clap her hands and use sign language to let us know that she had finished eating. 2. What is your favourite activity to do with your daughter? We are big baby wearers in my family. Our baby carrier makes nature walks and hikes so easy and enjoyable for us. 3. What is your favourite television show? I just can’t get enough of Glee. Love all the catchy song covers and high school drama. 4. What was the last book you’ve read? No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. 5. What is one product or service you can’t live without? Due to postpartum hormones, I was losing handfuls of my hair. Nioxin shampoo and conditioner has helped slow down my hair loss and speed up the re-growth. 6. How do you find some “Mommy Time”? That rarely happens at my house. My daughter is very attached to me so sometimes it means handing her to Daddy, before she notices that I have left the room. When she is napping, I try to catch some time to do some reading, writing and crafting.
