Welcome to The Boroondara Pocketbook, a guide to discovering an area that locals know and love. The City of Boroondara is on the traditional lands of the people of the Kulin Nation and owes its name to the Indigenous term for "where the ground is thickly shaded". Today, leafiness is the perfect symbol of Boroondara's natural beauty as well as the retail and cultural abundance of its diverse range of town centres. We hope you enjoy the guide.

) ) ( ) ) ( ) ) ( ) ) ( ) ) ( ) ) ( ) ) ( ) ) ( )

From the first European settlements to waves of postwar migration, Boroondara - a precinct known for heritage homes, tree-lined streets and the odd Yarra River vista - has always been associated with the good life. In a city often associated with laneways and concrete, Boroondara owes its allure to open spaces and natural charm. But in the last few years, an increasingly cosmopolitan perspective has put Melbourne’s inner east on the cultural map. These days, you can picnic in Canterbury Gardens and cycle the Outer Circle Trail and bookend your history lesson with an Italian bistro, shoebox tapas bar or shrine to modern Greek. You can help your kids explore an award-winning playground in Hay’s Paddock, browse the Camberwell Fresh Food Market and unleash your inner music critic at the newly minted Hawthorn Arts Centre. Boroondara’s shopping centres offer more than just an enviable lifestyle—they’re also home to experiences bound to make you look twice. Sip an espresso among the street art in a glenferrie road arcade, catch a cult classic at an Art Deco picture house in camberwell, unwind in kew junction or visit the village, balwyn north to discover some chic designer shoes. Scour vintage clothing shops in ashburton, take a culinary trip via a Middle Eastern eatery in greythorn, discover one-of-a-kind gifts in burwood village or unearth striking jewellery on maling road. The Boroondara Pocketbook will help you explore the precinct like an insider and spark a deeper connection with an enclave that combines history, imagination and a local heart. 3

Camberwell is a perfect storm of old money and new ideas. Once shorthand for Edwardian estates, turn-of-the-century furniture shops and an iconic Sunday market, the precinct is now seeing offbeat caffeine hubs, bold pizzerias and basement wine bars sprout up between classic retailers and wellloved family establishments. It’s all thanks to a new generation intent on honouring the suburb’s history while proving that the most interesting Camberwell story might be what’s being written today.

LOCAL SNAPSHOT

Yo Zen

In Camberwell, doctors, lawyers and schoolteachers blend strong family values and respect for past generations with a passion for a refined way of life. They appreciate manicured gardens, market-fresh produce and literary festivals, and convene at tasteful restaurants and impromptu dinner parties when they need to unwind.

FLASHBACK

INSIDER TIPS

1853 A generous land sale drew English settlers and merchants to hilly Prospect Hill. The asking price for an acre of land? A wallet-friendly 40 pounds.

1 If you think shopping Camberwell like a local means strolling down busy Burke Road, you may want to reconsider. Duck into camberwell arcade, market lane and commerce place to avoid the precinct’s central thoroughfare and come face-to-face with everything from paper vendors to vintage jewellery shops.

1920 A temperance movement, lead by puritans and suffragettes, sparked the closure of the precinct’s wine saloons and hotels. The biggest casualty was the Camberwell Inn—the notorious drinkery was replaced by a milk bar. 1976 The Rotary Club Of Balwyn staged the first-ever trash and treasure market in the Camberwell Junction car park. It’s since defied the odds to raise $10 million for charities in Australia and overseas.

2 rotary's camberwell sunday market is a magnet for Melbourne’s vintage clothing fiends but make sure you set your alarm—you’ll find the best buys from 7am–10am. 3 Housed in a nondescript office building on Auburn Parade, hidden drinkery east of everything is rewriting Camberwell’s history as a liquor-free zone, while schooling locals in craft beer, Motown and hip hop.

SOUL TRADERS:

A guide to Camberwell Fresh Food Market vibrant oranges. hunks of salami. oversized prawns. There’s a reason that Camberwell Fresh Food Market reels in food obsessives from all corners of Boroondara. However, the bustling market, which started life as a 19th century carriage factory and has weathered fallout from the Great Depression, is more than just a culinary mecca—it’s also served as a centerpiece for the local community for over 85 years. These days, you can stock up on pecorino and homemade pasta at a continental deli, visit a fishmonger for a dozen fresh oysters and spend your lunch hour savouring a flaky pastry and a perfect flat white. You can spend an afternoon taking in a technicolour flower display, sample pesto spun out of fresh ingredients and stock up on fine olive oils, vinegars and crusty sourdough bread. A lot may have changed since its traders received produce via horse and carriage but the market’s soul has remained firmly intact. 16

SHOPPING LIST Beef cheeks from a butcher 1 that’s a firm believer in the benefits of a paddock to plate philosophy. Marinated olives from a cheese and smallgoods 2 specialist who channels the Sicilian backstreets. Atlantic salmon from a dedicated fishmonger who 3 delights in cleaning, scaling and filleting your purchases. A bunch of tulips from an inventive florist intent on 4 elevating flower-arranging to high art. Cherries from a fruit and 5 vegetable vendor with a history of attracting awards. 17

INSIDER TIPS 1 Stocked with everything from imported gorgonzola to marketfresh vegetables and seafood, leo’s food and wine is Kew Junction’s reigning pre-dinner party stopoff (and Melbourne’s first independent supermarket). 2 Although Kew Junction is dotted with caffeine nooks, via verona—a bustling coffeehouse that pours pitch-perfect espressos —is a local classic. It also paved the way for coffee innovators such as lil boy blue, an artful cafe with a laid-back vibe.

TYPICAL LOCAL

In Glenferrie, boomer couples, young families and students reside in slick apartments and stately heritage homes. They commute to jobs in law firms or inner-city architecture studios and spend weeknights convening at wine bars or tying up projects in candlelit cafes. In Glenferrie, age and background varies but locals share a work ethic and sense of fun. They know that their suburb’s blend of affluence and youthful energy offers a niche for everyone. 25

FLASHBACK

1863 An abundance of local clay saw Melbourne’s first brickyards established near Gardiners Creek. Today, the pink-and-brown ‘Hawthorn’ bricks that adorn facades are a striking reminder of the area’s past. 1925 The Hawthorn Football Club played its first game as part of the Victorian Football League, sparking the area’s legacy as an AFL capital and winning ten premierships in the next century. 2007 A Federation-era funeral parlour on Burwood Road is transformed into a wine bar, paving the way for an architectural trend that sees muchloved heritage buildings granted a second lease on life. 26

Try oskar mike, a laneway roaster famous for single origin beans or head to historic, buzzing Don Arcade for the little tuckshop, to watch the world go by whilst savouring some delectable coffee and pastries. 2 Featuring wood panels, leather Chesterfields and more than 300 whiskeys, baranows lounge—a ‘50s cigar lounge on the corner of Glenferrie and Burwood Roads—is a real-world ode to Mad Men. It’s also the only place in Australia where you can enjoy a Cuban cigar inside.
