WELCOME TO THE

summer edition of Style Seekers It isn’t a coincidence that the most memorable things about the harbour city are also tailor-made for summer. Savouring a lazy breakfast while the sun glimmers on the water, whiling away an afternoon in a leafy beer garden or rallying your friends and day-tripping up the coast might be the stuff of ritual but they’re also proof that there’s nothing quite like Sydney life. In this issue, we celebrate everything that’s classic about summer in the city and explore the creative awakenings that are paving the way for cultural change. We head to Bondi Beach to shoot a band of DJs and designers whose rule-breaking venues are shaking up the local food scene, ride a speedboat on the Harbour with Nahji Chu, meet the talented floral designers bringing artistry to summer weddings and head to the city’s grandest waterfront hotel to learn about the second coming of Double Bay. As addictive as Sydney is in summer, we know there’s sometimes nothing better than packing your bags and hitting the open road. This issue, we take a trip to Newcastle—a city whose industrial past has become a canvas for an electric creative culture and spend some time in Canberra, whose galleries, cafe and designer hotels are enjoying a long-deserved moment in the sun. Pour yourself an icy drink, find a seaside perch and join us as we dip into a season of sun-splashed adventure. We hope you enjoy the issue. Victoria Moxey Publisher STYLE SEEKERS INTRO 1

GETTING AROUND Taxis are expensive and incur a 10% surcharge if you pay on card—they’re also twice as hard to find if there’s a festival or event on. DINING ETIQUETTE Sydney restaurants generally don’t accept reservations for less than six people – turn up, leave your name at the door and enjoy a pre-dinner drink if your table isn’t ready. Although tipping isn’t compulsory, it’s a welcome response to good service.

Nahji Chu’s string of new ventures might see her make her biggest splash yet. We jumped on a boat with the woman responsible for Sydney’s banh mi addiction and found out why there’s nothing as inspiring as harbour life. You’ve recently launched Bettychu, a café on Elizabeth Bay Marina as well as a new drive-through eatery in Double Bay. Can you tell us about these new openings? I’m a local and Bettychu is my nickname for the area—Betty Bay. It’s an easy, fast menu that includes rice paper rolls, banh mi and Single Origin coffee. We’re also doing a Betty in Bed menu delivering ricotta hotcakes and 60-40 eggs—half-boiled and perfectly poached—to customers within a one- kilometre radius. The drive-through has always been a dream of mine—it’s next to a drycleaners that I’d always drive past and wish was a Misschu branch. For me, living in Sydney and being a former refugee made me feel as if I should own a boat. If you’re going to keep calling me a boat person, I’m going to take that literally! Cre-Asion

If you look beyond Sydney’s sparkling views and splashy architecture, you’ll see signs of a small-scale revolution on the cusp of big things. Since 2008, the City of Sydney has been introducing a series of initiatives aimed at fostering the kind of intimate, inventive encounters that make a city tick - from art installations suspended in abandoned spaces to pocket-sized drinkeries reinterpreting the way you sip. These days, historic Bulletin Place plays host to moody tapas bar Tapavino, and an upstairs speakeasy, Bulletin Place, mixing some of the best cocktails in the world. Temperance Lane is home to Grasshopper, a small bar stalwart where drinks come in jam jars, along with artwork courtesy of local artist Newell Harry - a neon-lit creation, Circles in the Round. Although the City’s Laneways and Small Bar initiatives have helped reinvent Sydney’s secret corners and forgotten passages, the program has been intent on finding a welcoming niche for creative entrepreneurs. Visit Shirt Bar, a Sussex Lane merchant where the thrills of a sharply tailored business shirt go best with a glass of single malt whiskey, to Cre-Asion, a shoebox eatery doling out single origin coffee and avocado macaroons. Behind Sydney’s skyscrapers and thoroughfares, you will find one-of-a-kind experiences – proving that the city’s creativity and innovative spirit is moving at a rate of knots. We urge you to get exploring.

There’s nothing faddish about Sydney’s latest culinary shift—a group of DJs and music veterans bringing freewheeling creative energy to venues that move to their own beat. It takes 52 steps to realise that FrenchVietnamese eatery Salon de Thé owes as much to music as it does to culinary nous. To access the candlelit space, conceived by the CIROC Collective, a team comprising Michael Nolan, Dan Single, George Gorrow and Paul Wilson - ex-members of notorious six-piece Sydney DJ troupe Bang Gang and denim label Ksubi - as well as restaurateur Maurice Terzini, you need to climb an unmarked staircase lit by a flash of pink neon, a journey that feels more like arriving at a far-flung Parisian nightclub than a dinner venue. “Sydneysiders love experiences and they love to celebrate,” says Wilson. “Traditionally they’ve done that in a late night culture but restrictions have encouraged people to embrace the dining scene. In the last few years, food has become one of the most important things in our city.” Salon de Thé doles out FrenchVietnamese classics such as petit pho laced with fragrant star anise courtesy of head chef Julien Perraudin, and includes Bar de Thé, an upstairs lair that pours delicate cocktails and Ciroc Vodka martinis. But this isn’t the only way Sydney is pairing music pedigree and culinary ambition. In August last year, broadcaster Keith Hodgson started Neighbourhood Bondi, an offbeat drinkery that serves caramel corn Old Fashioneds while housing local radio station Bondi Radio. What’s more is Paddington’s freshly minted Franchi Brothers Italian Bar, a passion project by the Franchi Brothers. This DJ duo intend on bringing the music and food of their Tuscan childhood to their newly adopted hometown. “My brother Simone and I have spent the last seven years playing festivals and events as the Franchi Brothers,” says

Filippo Franchi. “I was combining DJ sets with live percussion while my brother played bass guitar. We grew up in Lucca, Tuscany where food and music were just part of daily life and we’d always thought about bringing that here. When the Paddington space landed in our laps, the Italian Bar was born. We spent two months bringing this place alive and the energy here now is just incredible.” For Filippo, recreating this energy means skipping strict reservations policies in favour of the warm, around-the-clock dining culture he remembers growing up. The soundtrack, which spans jazz, house and Italian swing, also nods to the bar’s wide ranging clientele.

“As a boy, I would sit at the bar with my father and he would drink Aperol Spritz and I would sip on a drink called Crodino – which we stock here,” he recalls. “In Tuscany, you can go to a bar four times a day, have panini for lunch, come in for coffee and back for a drink at night. We serve antipasti, pecorino and pizza as well as a famous Sardinian beer called Ichnusa. You can eat all day and sit outside in summer. It feels like back home.” Salon de Thé is equally inclusive. The concrete-and-marble venue, inspired by the spirit of connection and conversation that ruled the salons of 19th century France, takes a democratic approach to its music and menu and is more interested in timelessness than it is in being flavour of the month. “Our friends at Montreal record label Multi Culti curate a different playlist every season but because we don’t have a big, banging sound system, we encourage people to play records off their phone,” says Nolan, who along with Single, saw Bang Gang’s freewheeling DJ sets take him around the world. “We wanted to offer food that was a lighter, healthier alternative to what is trending and create a bar for anyone in their 20s, 30s, 40s or up.” Franchi believes that this synergy between Sydney’s music scene and culinary culture is well overdue. “To appreciate what you taste you want all your senses to be working. When you add music, it makes the experience complete,” he says.

Salon de Thé, Neighbourhood Bondi and Italian Bar aren’t the only eateries proving that music and food equal culinary magic. At Surry Hills’ Suzie Q, owner & DJ Jordan Deck combines rock ‘n’ roll inspired brunch specials with vintage vinyl. Nearby Play Bar dishes up Philly cheese steaks and live hip hop and Tatler, a Darlinghurst speakeasy housed in a sandstone basement, serves late-night cheese boards alongside overseas electronic and jazz acts. Double Bay—a village famous for sparkling views and leafy streets—is enjoying a second coming thanks to audacious new developments, inspired hospitality ventures and the restoration of the InterContinental Hotel. Here’s our guide to unearthing the best of the city’s favourite waterfront neighbourhood. If you can’t spare the time for a European vacation, board the ferry from Circular Quay, pass the white sailboats that skate across the harbour and step off at Double Bay jetty, twelve minutes later, onto a sliver of sand. Stroll along New South Head Road to Murray Rose Pool, a sun-splashed tidal enclosure where you can swim up to the pontoon, or curl up on the deck, close your eyes and imagine that you’re in the south of France. Double Bay is renowned for it’s breath-taking geography. The leafy enclave, named for its location straddling the twin harbourside inlets and sparkling real estate, perfectly embodies the quintessential lifestyle that this stylish city has to offer. During the last two years, bold investment has started to reshape Double Bay’s waterfront parks and heritage boulevards to assert the precinct’s place on the cultural map. There’s a new energy to the neighbourhood’s well-loved rituals—whether you’re sifting through freshly picked mangos at the Double Bay organic markets, people-watching over salmon eggs benedict and lattes at an alfresco café on Transvaal Avenue, picnicking among sculpted hedges in the heritage-listed Blackburn Gardens or browsing artisanal accessories and designer fashion at a sleek Knox Street boutique. The Kiaora Lands Development, a major urban renewal project that includes a Woolworths that’s home to a walk-in cheese room and soon to be opened state of the art public library, is proof that decamping to this fast-changing suburb is your fastest route to harbourside bliss.
