NARCISSIST In the words of Coco Chanel, “elegance is refusal. The contemporary Narcissist knows there is more to the art of dressing than wearing a label. Acknowledging their body as a canvas, they have the courage to define fashion and luxury in their own style. They adore sculpted forms, colours and textures that can be worn like a second skin. As advocates of true craftsmanship, they expect sustainable, bespoke and artisan qualities from their beloved brands... and breakfast in bed.

City Hot Spots
The art of shopping The lifeblood of many world cities is undeniably found wherever people spend their valuable time and money. In Sydney’s CBD, it’s in the network of arteries alive with boutiques, emporiums and arcades, pumping with style and substance. From fast fashion to luxury labels, beauty to books, concept dining to convenient consuming, mostly everything is catered for in the very heart of Sydney.
The pedestrian-only part of Pitt Street is the setting for the world class Westfield shopping complex, with international retailers such as Zara and Gap sitting alongside iconic powerhouses like Prada and Gucci. Homegrown brands Ksubi and Gorman also have a place, not to mention slick new concept eateries like hybrid restaurant-cum-fashion boutique Cara&Co, and the longstanding favourite of Sky Phoenix’s yum cha – each as achingly cool as they are stylish (and/or delicious!). 8 NARCISSIST STYLE SEEKERS
Known affectionately as The Strand and connecting Pitt to George St, is the Strand Arcade, via a narrow gallery of the best names in Australian design (as explored on page 26). An enduring oasis of calm, the Strand’s old school Victorian charm is still very much intact; more so juxtaposed with the modernity of the CBD. Another must-visit for discerning fashionistas is Paddington and Woollahra, both neighbourhoods crowded with local design talent.
Head underground through the shopping tunnels of Town Hall and cool hunters can resurface in the street style mecca of The Galeries, populated with hipper than thou streetwear labels alongside cleverly designed accessories to go with them.

Walk up George St towards Circular Quay to play with the latest technology at the ever buzzing Apple store, admire Sydney’s landmark Louis Vuitton Maison and drop in to the sleek Armani flagship at Martin Place on the way to the MLC Centre. Built in 1977 to a mixture of controversy and acclaim, the MLC Centre contains the US Consulate, The Theatre Royale and a plethora of style setters under the MLC Centre banner. The MLC is graced with classic French labels like Longchamp and Cartier alongside Swiss timekeepers Omega, whilst local girl Belinda Seper stocks the cream of international collections in her eponymous store. Nearby, Chifley Plaza is the one-stop up-market convenience shop for everything stylish suits might need during their lunch; from fashionable workwear staples to Iku’s organic eat-in/take away/ groceries options. The heart of Sydney and all its hot spots have everything from the classic to the cutting edge. To be experienced, experimented and maybe even purchased, Sydney is every style seeker’s dream. Ralph Lauren SS 2012
American Beauty
Writer: Christel Escosa
There is something incredibly timeless about Ralph Lauren. After 42 years in the business, just a mention of the label conjures up the best facets of iconic Americana; from the New England coast, Native American culture to Hollywood’s golden age, Ralph Lauren epitomises classic American design. With an illustrious history, Ralph Lauren’s countless highlights include genre defining feats such as clothing Diane Keaton and Woody Allen in Annie Hall and dressing an Oscar winning Gwyneth Paltrow. Currently available in store, Spring/ Summer 2012 may be romantic and carefree, but as always is grounded by the Ralph Lauren trademark of sophistication and grace. Silhouettes are airy and delicate, with more than a charming nod to Jazz age sportswear for day time. When the evening rolls in, 1920s and 1930s Hollywood is called upon delivering glamour in icy pastels and gently architectural cuts – clean and luxurious. As if any more proof is needed of Ralph Lauren’s enduring and iconic vision. For stockists T: 1800 501 201

What to do and where to go for a cultural fix
INTELLECTUAL Oscar Wilde said, “Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” The Intellectual is inspired by the city’s evolving structure, energy and lesser noticed facets. With grace and a wide-eyed nature, they are delighted to find art in a Hermes bag, an obscure photography exhibition of 1920s Berlin at a gallery, and the latest podcast of The Moth on their iPod shuffle. The intellectual wears brains, a vintage smoking jacket from YSL, and a Lomo camera well and approaches the city’s creative coordinates with an open mind.

STYLE SETTER CINNAMON LEE
cameleon EFFECT Jewellery and lighting artist, Cinnamon Lee is a thinking person’s designer. Photography & Styling by Helen White. Hair & Make Up by Karen Hopwood
With a Master of Philosophy (Visual Art), collections featured in the National Gallery and a recognised award recipient, she is turning Sydney’s design culture upside down. In a city whose design language is still “finding its voice”, Cinnamon expresses her style through historic references within contemporary context. Constantly looking at things from a new perspective Cinnamon combines traditional gold and silversmith craftsmanship with 3D computer modeling to create structures that would be difficult, if not impossible, to produce using traditional techniques alone. 18 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS
Taking inspiration from the human landscape, she believes “style is effort made to look easy”. A philosophy that transcends through her work.
Driven by the idea of “making things harder to see at first glance”, her ‘chameleon’ LED light, currently available at Metalab in Surry Hills, deconstructs convention to create an interactive product that extends the perceived potential of what a lamp may be. Reinventing the traditional ‘lamp shade’, it performs as a light source that reacts to proximity and touch. The secret to Cinnamon’s nature is evident in her jewellery. Available at Courtesy of the Artist in The Strand Arcade, the ‘Covert Jewels’ collection has been deliberately introverted, with the intricate design detail featured on the inside providing inconspicuous secrets, cultivating an intimacy with the design and the wearer. Cinnamon’s approach of constantly editing and provoking the experience to “uncover what it is you’re seeing or not seeing”, permeates beyond the physical to illuminating heights, all effortlessly. Now that’s something to think about. 20 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

STYLE SETTER DION LEE
FOUND IN TRANSLATION Fashion Designer Dion Lee launched his debut collection in 2008 and quickly cemented his status as one of Australia’s leading talents. Photography & Styling by Helen White
Best known for his translation of architecture and science into “relaxed sophistication” Dion now attracts global attention, but still calls Sydney home. Believing that Sydney style reflects the physical landscape and its trans seasonal climate, Dion effortlessly designs collections balancing proportion and silhouette to create structures that “link the environment and the body”. 30 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS
“I design for a certain kind of contemporary feminine identity, there is a very strong connection within that kind of woman being Australian,” says Dion. With origami like precision, his work is an articulation of engineered construction and detailed resolution, running parallels between architecture and fashion with “the ability to draw something on a two dimensional level and materialising it on a three dimensional sensory level”. This season is no different.
Taking inspiration from the collaborations he seeks, Dion has previously joined forces with Cue Clothing to release his own collection and most recently worked with Kanye West and Fashion Editor of Harper’s Bazaar Christine Centenera on his London show, supported by a short film he created with Australian Director Lorin Askill. If it’s possible to balance complexity with simplicity, Dion Lee achieves this in volumes. An achievement that puts him on the “watch list”, a status that Sydney and the world will be monitoring. Check out Dion Lee’s collection at Westfield, David Jones and Incu. For stockists: dionlee.com.au

Whilst they love new trends, Nicola & Orlando Reindorf don’t believe in fads, rather timeless pieces that tells a story; such as the striped blue and white striped Amor Luxe Breton shirt created in 1858 for seaman in case they fell into the sea. “Gone are the days of fast throw away fashion, people are seeking timeless 46 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

RICEPAPER Best known as “the queen of the rice paper roll” Nahji Chu isn’t chicken when it comes to re-inventing food style. Photography, Styling & Prop Production by Helen White. Hair & Make Up by Christina Cleary
After arriving on a refugee visa in 1978, Nahji went on to study broadcast journalism and filmmaking. Given her passion for culinary delights and her family’s background in Vietnamese restaurants, she took a significant life turn by opening up a small hole in the wall catering/takeaway business on William Street. This has now expanded to the Misschu empire of modern day hawker eateries, designed for the foodie “on the go”. 58 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

RHAPSODY
Embodying a “sixth-sense” of knowing exactly what people want, Misschu seamlessly brings a raw simplicity to high end food at a low price tag, something Sydney has been crying out for.
Nahji Chu exudes a rare confidence that has matured through exceptional circumstances that most people don’t experience in a lifetime. She not only serves up a menu based on a rich heritage, like a true storyteller she aims to provoke thought. “I used my entry visa on the menu, because I wanted people to look at Vietnamese culture in a different way. I want to make refugees feel proud of their heritage,” she explains. Never one to stop moving, Nahji Chu is spreading the magic of her brand to include a “Vietnamese Crepery” in Bondi as well as incorporating Misschu’s ‘Just Add Water’ take home steam and eat dinner range whilst simultaneously creating a clothing range ‘Missfit’ and publishing a cook book. Misschu’s got it in the tuckshop bag; where style and flavour translates to originality and passion, packaged in a perfect take away.
