NARCISSIST In the words of Coco Chanel, “elegance is refusal. The contemporary Narcissist knows there is more to the art of dressing than wearing a label. Acknowledging their body as a canvas, they have the courage to define fashion and luxury in their own style. They adore sculpted forms, colours and textures that can be worn like a second skin. As advocates of true craftsmanship, they expect sustainable, bespoke and artisan qualities from their beloved brands... and breakfast in bed.

A MOMENT IN FASHION SS2011/12

Runway to Real Time

Bright to barely there, serious structure to free fluidity – this season is quintessentially Australian. Spring/Summer 2011/2012 is a reflection of Australian designers’ fearless reputation to roll a collective of trends into a string of seasonal must haves. Colour is the catalyst this season – you either walk the fearless block, or barely there approach. Expect a block party with turquoise, candy mauve, fuscia and lemon at local designer stores. Acid yellow and Julia Roberts-style red (done beautifully at Lover) are interesting additions to the summer palette this year. The silhouette is equally versatile – high buttoned shirts, the pencil skirt, necklines with height and structured shoulders contrasting soft tailoring.

Ginger & Smart

The ones to watch? Vanguard is kicking goals with the surf savvy male while Elliot Ward Fear is making Ga Ga wearable (we highly recommend discovering this guy).

1970s hedonism is inspiring a revival of flares and a continuation of the digital story. The psychedelic-esque, Pro Hart-aspiring print remains prevalent at the house of Josh Goot while Lisa Ho has introduced the earthy kaleidoscope and a washed out snakeskin print that shimmers from deep purple to sapphire green, gold and burnt auburn. What to do and where to go for a cultural fix

INTELLECTUAL Oscar Wilde said, “Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” The Intellectual is inspired by the city’s evolving structure, energy and lesser noticed facets. With grace and a wide-eyed nature, they are delighted to find art in a Hermes bag, an obscure photography exhibition of 1920s Berlin at a gallery, and the latest podcast of The Moth on their iPod shuffle. The intellectual wears brains, a vintage smoking jacket from YSL and a Lomo camera well and approaches the city’s creative coordinates with an open mind.

THEATRE OF TOMORROW

Ralph Myers reveals why theatre will always play on. Ralph Myers has recently been faced with filling the large boots of coveted curator of Australian theatre, Neil Armfield; shoes he’s decided to hang up and respect rather than attempt to fill. Different to your run of the mill Artistic Director, Ralph is a self-confessed ‘set designer who sometimes directs things,’ and in a spin on his craft with setting the scene, is hand selecting ‘small Australian companies producing great work’ to manifest a fresh and exciting season in theatre. “The rule is to curate the best season possible with what you can. I have different tastes to Neil and it’s an exercise in personal tastes across a series of individual shows; a kind of degustation,” explains Ralph. 20 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

Myers is the voice, intellect and superb drawer of helpful analogies capable of hurling even the heaviest X-Box user from their 3D visuals and into the world of a type of storytelling that has and, according to Ralph, will continue to survive the times. It’s a form of entertainment only as good as it’s audience – relying heavily on emotional investment. But how powerful is human reaction as we head into a world where digital is King? “If new technology was going to kill theatre it would have happened in 1895 when cinema was invented,” believes Ralph. Determined to stream relevance into an age-old setting, Ralph is tapping into the buzzing sub culture that is Sydney’s independent artistic world, working with the likes of Version 1.0 – a company renowned for a particularly brilliant method of telling modern and topical stories. And while Ralph is resourcing fresh interest for wider appeal, he still cites the power of imagination and personalisation as theatre’s guarantee to survive whatever revolution it’s thrown. “Despite the special effects and CG technology that imagination is increasingly subject to, no screen can truly represent, for example, the ocean. Since Shakespeare, someone has entered onto the stage and said ‘you are in a garden.’ This is why novels are always greater than movies.” says Ralph.

Ralph has accumulated a season of theatre filled with the nation’s finest playwrights and ‘choreographers’ in the country including Lucy Guerin (who Ralph is most excited about) and Benedict Andrews. Visit www.belvoir.com.au

Rising to the radar

Gary Bigeni prefers ‘creator’ over ‘fashion designer,’ using fine craftsmanship to pass through the ages. A bona fide quiet achiever, Gary Bigeni opts to avoid the bells and whistles typically associated with fashion – a diamond in the rough worth scouring for. The styler prefers the term ‘creator’ before designer, and views his items as ‘creations’ opposed to fashion designs. The childish palette meets mature structure and multi dimensional tailoring style that is synonymous with Gary Bigeni, seduces the modern trendsetter on 30 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

a daily basis throughout some of Sydney’s favourite boutiques (think Blood Orange and The Corner Shop). On display; the kind of craftsmanship constructed from the timelessness and precision responsible for architectural icons that have intrigued and inspired for centuries. “I love to create my clothes through lines, drape and clean silhouette. I like the clothes to tell their own story without beading or bows – but more through the patterns and shape of each piece in the collection,” says Gary. This concept of design immortality has earned Gary a divine following locally and abroad over the past eight years – a colourful cult addicted to fashion lined to withstand the times, translate through seasons and appease every hour of the day. “I think each person has their own vision of what they see or want to do (wear). I want the customer to see beyond just wearing the piece at that one time,” explains Gary. Beyond structured versatility, colour is a big part of the Gary Bigeni philosophy and this season shines in sky blue, delicate mauve, burnt auburn, sandstone and richer neutrals. “Colour will always be a part of everyone’s life and people always react to it. I don’t see colour as a summer thing; I wear the brightest colours through winter. Just do it and don’t be afraid of it.” 32 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

CURATOR OF COOL

Kelly Robson of Gaffa Gallery is threading ‘cool’ into Australian design. Kelly Robson is the Initiative Director of Sydney’s Gaffa Gallery – a heritage building boasting several levels and pop-up-shops home to our nation’s finest artists and designers. This hunter for all things hipster endures the commercial and distasteful for the benefit of the people – scraping at the surface of emerging design culture to bring forth the catalyst of contemporary cool for quick consumption and a swift rise to fame for our local artists. “I like to think that Gaffa Gallery is a big part of Sydney city culture. It’s important for the grass root activities to be visible to the general public and not kept in the warehouse where only devoted followers will trek. We are STYLE SEEKERS STYLE SETTERS 37

championing that there are many Sydney creatives capable of being professional artists,” says Kelly. Gaffa Gallery prefers to lend its space to contemporary creations – a genre saluting art “being made right now by artists using current topics and media.” Enter via the street level gallery and transcend ordinary thought processes and daily drool, with a selection of arts teetering on the border of reality and fantasy; but always symbolic of the future. Representing everything from painting to photography, jewellery and platform work, Gaffa Gallery salutes cross disciplines courtesy of some of Australia’s most exciting artists, including Ella Barclay and Marnie Dawson. “The Sydney art scene is at a really exciting time. I know Melbourne has a reputation for being the cultural and creative capital of Australia, but I believe Sydney is close to assuming this title – if it hasn’t already.”

Q&A

If Sydney were an artist who would it be? The Kingpins strike a chord; all glitter, music and dance, yet like the subplot in some twisted opera, there’s a dark, deep androgynous mystic sleaze rumbling beneaththe surface.
Define Sydney artists in one word: Powerhouses.

Where do you go in Sydney to be inspired?
The Harbour and rough shorelines keep us all relatively level-headed.
 Sydney in summer is like?
Melbourne in winter - simply its best dressed season.
Sydney’s (arty) crew will generally head where for an afternoon drink?
Generally they have planted stake in the last few un-hipsterfied
old pubs out in the pokie room where no one will annoy them.
The most colourful part of Sydney is? Gaffa!
Your favourite Sydney market and why?

Eveleigh markets on Saturdays have really taken off. You can find Kylie
Kwong at a stand cooking fresh breakfast rolls,
as well as a great little Indonesian stand that serves a mean murtabak. Your favourite time of the day in Sydney and why. I used to live in Glebe and there’s this moment at sunset, if you look
across Blackwattle Bay towards the city, where the west-setting sun flares
up and bounces light off the plethora of reflective glass of the high-rise
skyline, making it and everything this bright rosy pink.

SMALL BAR SYNDROME

Meet the duo carving character into Sydney nightlife. Bona fide trendsetters materialize concepts they think are ‘cool’ despite the common grain. Their ideas generally nod to eras gone by with a contemporary twist. This is exactly what Martin O’Sullivan and John Toubia represent – minus the arrogance. Instigators of Sydney’s flourishing small bar scene, Martin and John brought underground, speakeasy-style nightlife to Sydney with Grasshopper Bar. “Sydney’s nightlife is much more exciting since the surge in small bars. There is something for everyone. You can come to 48 STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS

us for fun cocktails and serious food. You can go to Absinthe Salon and sip something you’ve never tried before, or head to one a bar that only specialises in wine from a particular region. There’s so much choice,” says Martin. Sydney’s small bar count is sitting at 30 with more to open this year – a posse of pockets buried throughout Sydney and working collectively to eradicate ‘anything big and impersonal. “The small bar scene is about going somewhere where you know the person that serves you, and they know you,” says Martin. The kind of liquor shakers with honours in the craft (should the accolade exist) and the engines behind specialised cocktail menus lined with quirky opposed to outdated tipples. Captain of the stylish cocktail, John reveals some trendy ingredients we can expect to indulge this spring summer. “Fruit infused shakes, marmalades and candied cumquat. Sake is lighter than a lot of other spirits while being packed with flavour and unusual candied fruits give common spirits a new twist,” explains John. And that’s exactly what these guys do – slash commerciality with interesting flavour – and Sydney is loving it. Grasshopper Bar Temperance Ln, Sydney. T: 9947 9025

Q&A

A cocktail in Sydney is best sipped: With good company. What sort of cocktail would you serve your quintessential ‘Fringe Seeker?’ #35 – Honey-Ginger Sake, fresh Mint and homemade Lemonade served in a beaker of course. Fun, quirky as well as being a beautifully balanced drink. Springtime in Sydney tastes like: A very dirty Martini. If Sydney were a liquor it would be... Top shelf Gin. It’s sexy and full of unusual botanicals but with a little kick. Best spot for a drink amongst the locals? Revolver in Annandale to drink coffee in the mornings, a glass of sparkling wine at lunch time in Bronte by the beach, and a little tipple at Hemmingways, Manly come the evening. The most unknown Sydney drinking spot you know of? Temperance Laneway. When we closed it down for Sydney Film Festival, you could eat street food, sip on cocktails and attend talks hosted with some of the world’s finest film talent. It was grungy, unusual and crazy. We’ll be doing it again next year.

SECRET HOTSPOT Boteco Boteco, Portuguese for 'small bar', pairs fresh produce and authentic South American flavours with a beautifully crafted cocktail selection. Sip a Pisco Sour along with ingenious sharing plates like the popular ceviche with tapioca, salt cod balls with pumpkin or the grilled meats. The empanadas of palm hearts, olives and feta cheese are a must try. 421 Cleveland St, Surry Hills. T: 9318 2993

Discover the artisans within Sydney’s food culture

GOURMAND The Gourmand treats every food morsel like a love story. They believe in the perfect romance of ingredients and are connoisseurs of morning and afternoon tea. In pursuit of bliss, they rearrange their four o’clock to satisfy their sweet tooth. Like Nigella Lawson, they don’t believe in low-fat cooking. The Gourmand adores the craftsmanship, innovation and sensation of haute tastes on tiny plates. For them the city is a gallery of edible monuments and occasions for nibbling.
