MARINA HOTEL KATO GOUVES, HERAKLION architectural prestudy for the renovation of hotel

GENERAL GUIDELINES reveal the simplicity and purity of the original buildingby removing all the unnecessary elements that were added lately in order to neutralize the hotel as a canvas to make the “Marmaras� element stand out in the space. design all hotel spaces with a unique character but at the same time to keep a general style as their basis. make more accesible and attractive all the facilities of the hotel through its new clear design. keep as main design principle economy, not only in the operation of the hotel (eg. cleaning) but also in the construction (eg. recycling).

1. SNACK BAR DESIGN STRATEGY: creating two poles of interest in the sitting area, by placing two big wooden tables and arranging all the other tables around them the new bar construction allows closure of the snack bar after 23.00 with a simple move the inclined deck offers a place for lying and playing

2. LOUNGE BAR DESIGN STRATEGY: couch area on a deck construction that enables better view to the see. new pergola with light structure that offers sun protection and is resistant to wind. lightning coming from lower eg. flowerpot lightnings.

3. RESTAURANT DESIGN STRATEGY: organize buffet on the upper level of the restaurant leaving all the space in the lower level for dinning room. advantages of this arrangement: buffet close to kitchen. buffet visible from restaurant entrance and from dinning space. dinning space close to the windows.

SECTIONS CONCEPT The concept was based on the idea of creating a more intimate space in this large area with high ceilings. By designing five zones with different sections the space gives a perspective towards the windows and the outdoor space. This sections play a double role: They organise the buffeet on the upper level and at the same time they organise the dinning space in five zones. The ceiling becomes wall and folds over the buffet structure. The live cooking stand is placed in the centre of the upper level and creates a corridor for service towards the kitchen. In front of the live cooking two ramps guide us to the main dinning area. There is also the drinks service. In the dinning area lightnings hang from the ceiling, some of them very close to the tables, thus giving a more warm and site specific enviroment for each table. Finally, the permeable ceiling hides the installations but reveals them to the visitor only when he looks vertically.

4. NIGHT CLUB main space for entertainment after 11pm which needs a strong concept to become attractive and profitable. The concept of UNDERWATER WORLD. DESIGN STRATEGY: design a more attractive and bigger bar. remove unnecessary tables and chairs. create more stands for stools to allow better view to the stage and the dj. leave a few couches on upper level for bigger companies (bottle consumption). design a light stripe which runs around the space and embodies the dj, the stands and the main bar. apply the concept of underwater world for the decoration (wallpapers, lightning, furniture).

5. RECEPTION AND TOURIST OFFICE RECEPTION the intermediate space between outer and inner world of the hotel. Reception of the arriving groups / Introduction to the hotel concept. Meeting of the car rental companies with the residents. Meeting of the excursion groups. DESIGN STRATEGY: remove unnecassary walls – open space and view. paint the ceiling white (to avoid distruction of the eye). paint the wall behind reception darker (to bring out reception desk). simplify reception desk (remove stone walls, keep marble as main material). use simple and long seating benches (short stay in the reception). use elements of nature for the decoration (pebble seats). exhibit a model of the hotel (to introduce all facilities to the visitors). provide video wall for information and video projection.



5. RECEPTION AND TOURIST OFFICE TOURISM DESK extra facilities that should be located at a more central space and be more attractive DESIGN STRATEGY locate the tourist desk near the reception (main corridor to the restaurant) operation at the same time as info point for other events (board for announcements etc.) strong “Marmara� character on neutral background in order to stand out reformation of the waiting space of the bathrooms in order to operate also with the tourist desk
