The team at UseLocally Magazine are so excited to be celebrating our 100th issue this month. We genuinely love what we do and are so proud to be a source of local information and publish interesting articles for our readers as well as offering local businesses a platform in which they can promote themselves. Another reason to celebrate is that Spring is finally here and this month we mark St. David's Day, St. Patrick's Day, the 25th anniversary of World Book Day, International Women’s Day and at the end of the month British Summer Time begins. We were intrigued to learn about “Made in UK Day” planned for 9th March 2022. Founded in 2011, this is a day when we are being encouraged to celebrate UK manufacturing by buying something made in the UK and sharing it using the hashtag #madeinukday. The organisers say that if everyone bought just one item made in the UK worth £20 it would be worth £1.3 billion in revenue! You can find out more by visiting www.makeitbritish.co.uk, plus if you’re a UK business owner there are free resources to download. That just leaves room for a reminder that the clocks go forward on 27th March.

Nottinghamshire County Show Returns!
The popular annual event returns to Newark Showground on Saturday 14 May but, this year, it will be a one-day event instead of two. The show, which had to be cancelled for the last two years due to the pandemic, features a mix of prize-winning livestock, equine, traditional countryside fun and games, stands, local food producers and craft stalls. Richard Sheldon, chairman of the show committee, said: “It’s wonderful to be able to look forward to the Nottinghamshire County Show after what has been a difficult and a long two
years and we can’t wait. It was a big decision for us to switch to one day, but we felt that it would enable us to focus all of our efforts into staging a fresh show with a host of new attractions. “Travel restrictions during lockdown and TV farming programmes, especially the Clarkson effect, have raised interest in the countryside and our way of life and we hope that it will inspire people to come down and find out what farming and country living is all about.” The 137th show will have more emphasis on animals and outdoor pursuits than in previous
years, including a family-friendly dog show, an interactive factfinding trail for children and the reinstatement of the Grand Parade of livestock in the main ring. Elsewhere there will be a fur and feather tent, food festival, display of vintage tractors, maypole dancing, classic countryside games and a wild and wacky lawnmower race staged by the Nottinghamshire Young Farmers Club. Advance tickets are now on sale, priced £10 for adults. Admission is free for children aged 16 and under.

Get Rewarded for Going Green
A new green scheme to encourage residents to make more sustainable choices, and win rewards for doing so, has been launched by Newark and Sherwood District Council. ‘Green Rewards’ allows residents to log their green activities through a dedicated mobile app or web browser, and potentially win vouchers. The programme aims to encourage people to take action against climate change by making small changes in their daily lives. Residents can log every day actions they have taken to reduce their carbon footprint, such as walking to work, avoiding single use plastics, or eating a plant-based diet on some days. They will then earn Green Points, giving them the opportunity to win vouchers to be used locally. Councillor David Lloyd, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “ Reducing your 6

carbon footprint is more important than ever, but it can be overwhelming to know where to start. I hope residents feel motivated to be more sustainable once they see how even small changes can have a significant impact. For more information visit www.newarksherwooddc.gov.uk

time with you, no matter what you are doing, and it is often a great time to chat to your little ones.
My older two - four and three years old - leave a path of destruction wherever they go. But they (usually) do enjoy helping out around the house if I can make it fun; for example, by turning it into a race or competition, or cranking up the music. They also enjoy feeling involved with the tasks I’m doing around the house. They feel a sense of achievement on completing a task and helping Mummy.
Of course some of these you might have to redo yourself. But make sure you praise them for the effort and not just the outcome.
Helping out with household chores teaches children a range of skills such as; • Self-care • Problem solving • Cause and effect • Responsibility • Team work • Improved motor skills. Allowing your children to be involved with jobs at home builds their confidence, by knowing how to do things and becoming self reliant. I’ve also learnt that a child’s favorite toy is you! Light Posturing How returning to the fundamentals of good posture could drastically improve your quality of life. Bad posture, from slumping on sofas, hunching over computers, leaning in towards smartphones and tablets, and generally getting dragged down by life’s woes, not only takes its toll on our joints and muscles, it also affects how we feel about ourselves. Physically, aches and ailments brought on from perennial bad posture spread to all parts of the body, creating issues as varied as poor digestion, neck pain, headaches, issues with feet, knees, and hips, and even breathing problems. --Three methods to improve posture while working Our posture is most compromised when we’re sat or stood for prolonged periods of time. Humans are conditioned to know when they need to move around, and work can often seriously restrict our ability to do this (though not always – long periods on a mobile phone are just as bad). Here are some easy fixes fixes you
may want to consider for alleviating the pressure on your posture: 1. Make sure your chair is at the right height, so your screen is comfortably level with your eyeline. Shoulders should be down and back, and avoid crossing your legs. When typing keep arms at a comfortable 90-degree angle in a nice, neutral resting position. 2. Relax in your chair – they come with armrests for a reason! 3. If, alternatively, you have a job that means standing around for an extended period – for instance, a shop assistant – resist leaning on one leg and instead keep legs hip width apart, tummy pulled in and bum tucked under. --Three exercises to do outside of work Muscle memory isn’t just something you read about when buying a mattress – it’s a real thing we can plug into our body’s framework to ensure we become more

resilient to long periods sat or stationed in the same position. 1. Any general movement that frees you from being stuck in one place will lead to better posture, so change your stationary position, stretch, jog on the spot, and even lay flat if you feel it is putting flexibility back into your body. 2. Good posture is achieved through strong core and glute muscles. That means regular exercise, so keep up with those sit-ups and lunges! 3. Undertaking exercise classes and pursuits to counter the negative effects of being stuck in one place is a great idea too. Pilates has been proven to be one of the most efficient workouts, and one that can retune your entire body to work more effectively, making you pain-free feel stronger and full of confidence.

HOROSCOPES BY RUSSELL GRANT
ARIES
March 21st - April 20th Although you love the idea of starting new projects, it's difficult to stick with them when your mind wanders to other possibilities. People want to see that you finish what you started. You may need to remind yourself how positive you felt during planning, journeys or joint ventures in order to fulfil a promise. It will be wonderful to reunite with your amour when the month starts.
TAURUS
April 21st - May 21st Taking part in club and group activities can bring you so many benefits. Although you may be a shy person, it is important to socialise with others. Your current goals will be greatly helped by a new friend. You can make your wildest dreams come true if you have a passion for something and will work hard. A new friend will inspire you to do something different.
GEMINI
May 22nd - June 21st Once March begins, the pattern of events should make a significant improvement on trends you've seen in the past. While this year has been full of fun moments, these are nothing compared to what spring holds. All relationships should be happy and harmonious in March. Spending more time with friends, old and new, will improve your social life.
CANCER
June 22nd - July 23rd Travel plans made with a friend or partner can give you something to look forward to. This exciting journey will not be complete without you imagining the fun times you'll have together. A journey will inspire and lift you but you won't travel on an impulse. The fun part of planning a trip is the preparation. It will make you feel like a child at Christmas Eve.
LEO
24th - August 23rd Your top priority should be to achieve a goal you love. You won't take it lightly if you do nothing by the book. During the first few days your entire attention will be focused on one goal. The good news is that you have the talent and determination to accomplish it. While you are serious about your social and professional responsibilities you can still enjoy life and take risks.
VIRGO

SAGITTARIUS

Sometimes it may take some time for a partner to accept your adventurous ideas.
CAPRICORN
December 22nd - Jan 20th You'll be entertained by exciting emails, texts messages and phone calls. As March begins, you will be pleasantly surprised by a variety of exciting events that will brighten up your day. Money on my mind...
He s the UK s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.
T
he cost of motoring is highly topical right now. From soaring fuel prices to electric cars right the way through to low emission zones, we’ve perhaps never had to fight our way through so much commotion and noise where our wheels are concerned. While so much seems fluid as far as the affordability of our cars goes, one thing that seems constant – constantly high – is the cost of car insurance. I’m always asked what people should look for when they are searching for car insurance, and above everything else I would recommend they focus on price. I think there’s a slight myth in the insurance world that if you pay more you are going to get a better claim. If you’re going for a high-street insurance policy and you pay £300 or £500, don’t assume that the £500 will be a better product. Price should and will always be the core driver for most people because car insurance is a
grudge purchase. As for securing that best price, while most insurers are on price comparison sites, some – Aviva, Direct Line etc. – are not, so check between the two and always try to go through a cashback site to bring down the price further. Finally, a word about gender equality on car insurance premiums. A few years ago regulations came in designed to make things more equal, but all the evidence shows there is still a large disparity between prices for men and women. I’ve wrestled with this a lot – car insurance prices represent a behavioural difference between a man and a woman, so why should we be stereotyped that we will all
20 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts
behave like the rest of our gender? Having said that, should we not be allowed to discriminate on age as well because an 18year-old drives in a different way to a 58-year-old? Ultimately, insurance is a riskbased product and there are always winners and losers in these things. Funnily enough, in the first big campaign for gender equality in insurance, the big loser was young women because their prices went up, which is perhaps not always what people think of when they talk about equality campaigns: women losing out. So, there’s a balance between principle and practice here, and I think principle can win at practice’s cost.

New Highway Code Rules for 2022 The Highway Code has received a refresh, with a new set of rules coming into force from 29th January 2022. As well as some 49 existing laws being updated, new rules will be introduced. The changes are rather extensive and can be found on the website link located at the bottom of this article. However, the key areas are detailed below. Hierarchy of road users Previously The Highway Code stated all road users should be considerate towards each other, applying this principle to pedestrians and drivers equally. It meant that equal responsibility was originally placed on all road users for assuring the safety of others. The new hierarchy places responsibility on road users who could do greatest harm to others, and it is with them that the greatest obligation to protect the most vulnerable on the road now lies. Top of the hierarchy are lorry drivers, cars, vans, buses and motorcycles. But it should be noted that cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers have a greater responsibility to reduce the danger posed to pedestrians. Pedestrian priorities at junctions Prior to the rule change, road users would have given way to pedestrians who have started to cross the road into which they are turning. Under the new rules priority must be given to pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road, which means that if you are about to turn into a road and a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you should give way. New rules for drivers and motorcyclists at junctions The new rule states that when turning into or out of a junction, drivers should not cut across the path of any other road user, including cyclists, horse riders or horse-drawn vehicles, if doing so would cause the other road-user to slow down, stop or swerve. Safe passing distances An amendment to existing Rule 163 sets out safe passing distances for drivers when overtaking
cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders and those in horse-drawn carriages. Drivers must give at least a 1.5 metre space when overtaking a cyclist at speeds of up to 30mph. More space should be allowed when overtaking at speeds of more than 30mph. Rule 72 establishes the right for cyclists to ride in the centre of their lane, to ensure that they remain visible. When passing a pedestrian who is walking in the road, drivers should allow at least two metres of space and maintain a low speed. Rule 213 has also changed and now states that on narrow sections of roads, horse riders may ride in the centre of the lane and drivers should allow them to do so for their own safety, to ensure they can see and be seen. Drivers should pass a horse at least 2 metres distance and at a slow speed. In all cases, drivers will now have to wait behind a motorcyclist, cyclist, horse rider, horse-drawn vehicle or pedestrian and not overtake if it is unsafe or not possible to meet these clearances. Extra care should be taken in poor weather, including high winds.
For a more in-depth look at the new rules, visit: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_ data/file/1037306/table-of-change-to-the-highway-code.pdf

In Pursuit of Knowledge A voyage into learning and insight this month, with four engaging and intriguing books to look out for. The Jaws Book: New Perspectives on the Classic Summer Blockbuster by I.Q. Hunter After almost 50 years, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws remains the definitive summer blockbuster, a cultural phenomenon with a fierce and dedicated fan base. The Jaws Book: New Perspectives on the Classic Summer Blockbuster is an exciting, illustrated collection of new critical essays that offers the first detailed and comprehensive overview of the film’s significant place in cinema history. Bringing together established and young scholars, the book includes contributions from leading international writers on popular cinema, and covers such diverse topics as the film’s release, reception and canonicity, its representation of masculinity and children, the use of landscape and the ocean, its galvanising impact on the horror genre, and contemporary Hollywood itself. Published by Bloomsbury on March 24th The Palace Papers by Tina Brown Tina Brown takes you inside Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in this riveting story about the members of the royal family. Encapsulating everything following the death of Princess Diana to today, Brown covers Prince Charles’s
marriage to Camilla, the allegations around Prince Andrew, the rise in popularity of Kate Middleton, the tension between William and Harry, and the eventual defection of Harry and Meghan. Whether a self-appointed royalist or otherwise, our intense desire to lift the lid on the lives of those at the top of the social tree will always make tomes such as this one of the most anticipated books of the year. Published by Penguin Random House on March 22nd Kraftwerk’s Computer World by Steve Tupai Francis Kraftwerk’s most concise and focused conceptual statement, Computer World was also their most influential album, paving the way for a range of new musical styles and genres. This book explores the band’s revolutionary sonic template, and their lyrical obsessions in detail, exploring transition, via theories of post-humanism, cybernetics and the anthropology of transnationalism.

The Composing Cook
It was inevitable that, at some point, I would make banana bread. As you read this, we may still be in a further extended lockdown and I know that banana bread has been a very popular lockdown cake that everyone is baking; I might as well get on the bandwagon, right? Lockdown or no lockdown you have to make this chocolate banana bread. It’s easy, moist and soooo moreish, and it can be frozen. If you think you have exhausted the banana bread, think again. Make this and tell me it doesn’t rock.
INGREDIENTS:
250g self raising flour 1 level teaspoon baking powder pinch of salt 150g caster sugar 100g butter, softened plus extra to grease your loaf tin 4 small/medium very ripe bananas 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 75g dark chocolate chips 1 loaf time (measuring approximately 30cm x 11cm x 6.5cm) Serves 6-8
CHOCOLATE BANANA BREAD Preheat oven to 170°C (fan 160°C) and grease and line loaf tin In a large mixing bowl sieve the self raising flour, baking powder and pinch of salt. Add the butter and caster sugar and using your fingertips, rub it in until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. In a separate bowl, add the bananas, eggs and vanilla extract and whisk until combined. Pour this mixture into the breadcrumb mix and stir. Add the dark chocolate chips and give another mix. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf tin, smooth the top, and bake in the oven on the lowest shelf for 45 minutes, by which time, the top should be set. Remove from oven and place tin on a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes. Remove from tin and allow the chocolate banana bread to cool completely, if you can wait that long. Cut into slices and eat away.
You can watch me making this recipe and many others by visiting my YouTube channel, The Composing Cook. All you have to do is go to: www.youtube.com/TheComposingCook and there you will find me. Make it. Enjoy it. You will LOVE IT!!

Greenfingers…
The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about how our gardens can move us to a place of peace. While gardens mean different things to all of us, it’s when I venture into these tranquil spaces that I truly get a sense of their calming and healing power, and I find that hugely enriching. Most gardens and landscapes naturally come with a real feeling of gentleness – from the choice of flowers and plants, to gentle sweeps and curves that guide the eye onwards, to a softness and subtlety that may be a world away from some of the physical or emotional struggles we are going through; and I feel it is this dramatic contrast that really transports someone back to a place of comfort, even if just for a little while. What is also really important for me when I visit gardens at hospices and hospitals, is the remiind der thatt these spaces are not just for those who are residents. They also give hope, clarity, peace
and a sense of calm m to visiting families and, most importantly, the people who work there. Certainly, with everything th hat has happened over the past couple of years with Covid, and the reallisation that we need to con nsider and protect workerrs and staff who look after us, I would like to think those on the frontline can wrestle back their own sense of contentment when n soaking up the fressh air and beauty of a garden, where they can move away from a job th hat’s very hard and emotionally drraining. I would like to see more attention given to gardens an nd outdoor spaces in our healtth institutions, and in workspacess in general. They are more imp portant than we imagine. Simple sw weeps of flowers, plants and foliage are inspiring; the sight of an oliv ve tree can move our miind ds to far-off ff pllaces; and d we all know how calm ming a cascade of water can be. It’s alll very peaceful and there’s nothing g complicated or frenetic. Gardens are evolving, living things that are always cha anging – in fact they’re much like us in that respect! For me, on those da ays where I feel everything’s a bit fraught and frantic, and when I just can’t get to
grips with anything, I go to sit in the garden or potter about to find myself, and it really works! Life is a compromise, and you can’t always be on top of things, but gardens truly prove to me the healing qualities that exist within nature, and we’re so fortunate to have them.
