EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM

In 2013-14, USF student-athletes combined to post a 3.3 grade point average, which was higher than the general student population. More than half of all USF student-athletes earned West Coast Conference allacademic recognition. Twenty-five student athletes received first team WCC All-Academic recognition, which was the highest total among all conference schools. Four USF athletic teams earned perfect scores of 1,000 while four others produced scores of 990 or better in the 10th annual Academic Progress Rate statistics released today by the NCAA. USF’s men’s and women’s indoor track teams along with the women’s basketball and men’s tennis programs earned perfect 1,000 scores. All four squads were recognized with public recognition awards last week for producing APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. Four other Don programs – men’s cross country (996), men’s outdoor track (996), women’s cross country (996) and women’s volleyball (995) registered scores of 990 or higher. Student-athletes from USF’s women’s track and field program were honored by the USTFCCA for compiling the highest cumulative grade point average in the nation among more than 208 schools. Four USF women’s golfers were named Women’s Collegiate Golf AllAmerica Scholars for the 2013-14 season, as selected by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association of America. USF was the only WCC school to have more than two representatives on the team.

WIN AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF COMPETITION Two USF teams and two individuals took part in NCAA postseason competition during the 2013-14 season. USF’s women’s cross country team captured its fifth straight WCC Championship and achieved its highest national ranking in school history when the Dons jumped up to No. 10 in the USTFCCAA poll in early October and ultimately finished 19th at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Eric Causey became the first male cross country runner to qualify for nationals. Bridgett Dahlberg became the second Don to win the individual title at the WCC Cross Country Championships while sophomore Eric Causey became the first USF male runner to qualify for nationals. In the spring, Bradley Zimmer (baseball) and Jana Soethout (track & field) earned All-America status, giving USF two All-Americans in the same year for the first time since 1981. Zimmer was the 21st overall selection in the First Year Player Draft. Over the years, USF teams have captured nine national team championships and has produced two individual champions.

SEASON PREVIEW › 2014 USF VOLLEYBALL

USF MEN’S SOCCER › 2014

SEASON OUTLOOK Fresh off a fourth-place finish in one of the nation’s toughest leagues, the San Francisco volleyball team looks to capitalize on returning talent and an athletic incoming class to make a push to the top of the conference and into postseason play. “The team has been practicing for eight months now with one goal in mind - to get one step closer to the NCAA tournament, and that’s our main goal every year,” noted head coach Gilad Doron. “But hopefully this year with the new comers and the returners we can really work and really get to it. I think our senior class, Val and Anja, is ready to have a monstrous year. And I hope so. Our incoming players are exciting and they are going to add depth and in the middle we’ve got a lot of players that have a lot of experience so hopefully everything works out, we stay healthy and we go after it.” Offensively, the Dons will rely on senior leadership from Valentina Zaloznik. The senior from Ljubno ob Savinji, Slovenia, was named to the preseason All-West Coast Conference squad and she will seek to earn first-team all-league honors for the third-straight season. Should she achieve that goal, Zaloznik will obtain a program milestone as the first player in USF history to be named to the first-team on three occasions. “Valentina is one of the greats if not the greatest middle-blocker to play for USF,” said Doron. “She drives everything we have. She is a leader in terms of her competitiveness, how she prepares, the skill level she brings, her knowledge of the game. She kind of sets the tone for everybody.” The coaches are also looking to Anja Segota, a senior opposite/ outside hitter from Pula, Croatia, to close her collegiate campaign with a stronger impact on the court.

“She had an important role in our successes the last three years,” said Doron. “Anya has made a tremendous improvement this spring and she’s going to try to prove that to everybody with a great senior year.” After the small but stout senior class, Doron believes that offensive flexibility and depth are going to prove to be keys to the team’s success up front. Some of that flexibility will be seen from Katarina Pilepic and Inbar Vinarsky, both WCC All-Freshman team selections from a year ago. Coupled with fellow sophomore Emily Reed and junior Sara Staengle, the Dons have a stable of returners to carry some of the load lost with the graduation of Malina Terrell and the departure of Ester de Vries. Two newcomers are also expected to play an immediate role in the offensive lineup. “Both Jessica Gaffney and Oluoma Okaro are players who can play middle, left or right,” Doron noted of the Dons newest additions. “Oluoma is probably the best athlete we have ever had coming in, and Jessica is just a super hard working kid who competes and competes and will find a way to make an impact for us, I have no doubt about it.” A new primary setter will be at the helm of the Dons in 2014, but both women vying for the job gained on-court experience last season playing behind recent graduate Mackenzie Murtagh. Sophomore Kiara McKibben, a WCC all-freshman team selection, and junior Jurja Vlasic will both have to step into the vital role of setter in 2014. “Losing Mackenzie was big for us, but the great thing is Kiara and Jurja and Mackenzie all trained together and with sometimes running a 6-2 they all had playing experience last year,” said associate head coach Ken Ko. “They both understand what it’s going to require and how hard

2014 USF VOLLEYBALL › SEASON PREVIEW

they’re going to need to work, and how important it is to mesh and build chemistry with their teammates.” “This team will be driven by the level of how our setters mature quickly,” added Doron. “Jurja and Kiara are going to have to step in and give us a solid contribution. We need them to make good sets, smart sets and become leaders, on and off the floor. That’s the biggest challenge they have both been working on.” Defensively, a new libero will also hit the hardwood for the Dons after USF graduated the gold shirt of 2012 WCC Defensive Player of the Year Rebecca Kopilovitch. Incoming freshman Kim Gutierrez, who has international experience with the Mexican national team, is fully prepared to fill the void. “Graduating Becky was a big loss for us, but from the early stages Kim has really shown she’s ready to take on the challenge in becoming the next great libero for USF,” said Ko. “She has an incredible passing and defensive ability but she also brings really solid serves with her too and that’s something that we’re really going to use a lot.” Non-scholarship players Jessica Keenan and Courtney Sabahi are also back on the court for the Dons, fulfilling vital roles in practice, in the weight room, and on the sidelines. Their value is seen by the cohesiveness and chemistry throughout the 13-member squad. “I think that we’re all very pleased with our team’s chemistry,” noted Ko. “It’s a collection of people from all over the world that are here for one purpose – to get a good education, but also that one thing that unifies us is our love for volleyball. It takes a lot of work and a lot of energy to be cohesive and I think we are at a good place right now. We’re prepared to take on the challenge and looking forward to it.” Along with two West Coast Conference tournament teams from a year ago, the Dons will compete against two non-conference foes that made it to the 2013 NCAA Championships, and face a total of 11 squads that closed the season in the top 100 of the RPI rankings. Three of USF’s 2014 adversaries were ranked in the top 10 in the AVCA Coaches Poll at some point in the season. “I am pleased that we were able to come up with a competitive schedule once again,” said Doron on the 2014 slate of games. “We have diversified our competition to play as many conferences as we can. We start at home so that will give us a good indication to where we are nationally as well as position us to have a stronger RPI. “There are a lot of opportunities on the schedule and that’s what we ask for. If we capitalize on our opportunities earlier this year, then hopefully later we will get rewarded. I think it’s a great preseason schedule. I’m pleased that the conference athletic directors decided to extend to have a fourth nonconference weekend. I

think that’s going to help everybody in the conference to have a better overall RPI which should translate to the WCC having more teams in the tournament.”

2013 IN REVIEW

2014 USF VOLLEYBALL

2013 SEASON RECAP 2013 marked a milestone year for San Francisco volleyball program, as competitive volleyball on the Hilltop became a yearround event - both indoor and out. The Dons started the calendar year with the creation of a new sport to add to USF’s 15-sport athletic calendar. In its first season of competition as an NCAA emerging sport, USF finished 5-3 on the year, good for third in the Northern California Sand Volleyball Consortium. In the spring of 2014, the Dons continued their successes on the sand with a 4-6 mark. USF hosted three teams in the AVCA’s top 10 rankings with showdowns against consortium member Saint Mary’s, along with matches against then-No.3 Hawaii and No. 6 UCLA in the inaugural USF Invitational. On the hardwood, USF finished the 2013 indoor season fourth in the conference after posting a 13-15 overall record, and a 9-9 mark in league play. Highlights for the Dons included an historic season sweep of Pepperdine, including a straight-set victory over the Waves at War Memorial Gym. All told on the season, the Dons took care of four matches by a 3-0 tally. USF head coach Gilad Doron reached a personal milestone during the 2013 campaign as well. Through seven seasons on the Hilltop, Doron has guided the Dons in 102 victories and notched win No. 100 while in the Green and Gold on Halloween night at Portland. 10 › University of THE BEST CITY EVER

Already the winningest coach in program history, Doron rates eighth in the history of the West Coast Conference in total wins (102) and ninth in conference victories (51). USF earned season sweeps against Bay Area foe Santa Clara, longtime volleyball powerhouse Pepperdine and Portland. Dons’ season sweep of Pepperdine was the first in school history. Dating back the 2012 season, USF has taken three-straight victories over the Waves. Valentina Zaloznik led the team with a .341 attack percentage, compiling 304 kills on 675 attempts. This mark is good for the sixthbest season in USF history. Zaloznik’s accuracy is also evidenced by her .326 percentage in 2012, the eighth-best mark. Zaloznik was selected as WCC Player of the Week (Oct. 21) and is the first Don to be recognized by the league for a weekly honor in nearly four years. As a team, the Dons finished the year with a .234 attack percentage, which rates third in the USF recordbooks. Rebecca Kopilovitch climbed to third on the all-time USF digs list in her final season on the Hilltop. Her career 4.41 digs per set average rates second all-time as she amassed 1,377 digs in three years at USF. Malina Terrell closed her senior year with the 11th-best kills tally in school history, compiling 914 total kills for the Dons.

››CONFERENCE SUPERLATIVES Middle blocker Valentina Zaloznik, from Ljubno ob Savinji, Slovenia, posted a team-high 396.5 points on the year to lead the Dons and earn her spot on the All-WCC first team. She led the Dons in blocks (107), aces (28) and attack percentage (.341) and finished second on the squad in kills (304). Zaloznik became the fourth player in USF history to attain a spot on the All-WCC first-team twice in her career. She will be vying for a spot in history in 2014, as no Don has made the first team list on three occasions. A trio of freshmen - Katarina Pilepic, Kiara McKibben and Inbar Vinarsky - earned a spot on the all-freshman squad. Pilepic led the Dons in kills (307) and added 60 total blocks in her first collegiate season. McKibben compiled 331 assists and 127 digs, and Vinarsky posted 74 kills, 56 blocks and 47 assists to earn a spot on the all-freshman team. With three honorees, the Dons were one of two teams with multiple selections (Santa Clara), and stood as the only squad with three to make the list of 12 freshmen. This marks the second time in school history a trio of freshman have been placed on the team (2011). Rebecca Kopilovitch and Malina Terrell were awarded for their efforts on the court as All-WCC Honorable Mention selections to close out their successful collegiate career on the Hilltop.

blocks on the weekend. Pilepic picked up her first individual collegiate honor, leading USF with 51 kills in four matches, highlighted by a 21-kill effort in the Dons’ 3-2 win over SMU.

››ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Making academic success a priority that is hand-in-hand with athletic success was evidenced as two of USF’s on-court leaders were named to the WCC All-Academic squad. Rebecca Kopilovitch earned individual academic honors after being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII team for maintaining a 3.94 grade-point average in economics. Joined by Valentina Zaloznik, who keeps a 3.80 gpa in business administration, the duo the WCC All-Academic squad for the second straight season, exemplifying one of USF’s Four Pillars.

››COMMUNITY COMMITMENT USF continued its commitment to the community, actively participating in the San Francisco RBI and Harper for Kids mentoring programs. The Dons also had a strong voice on the student-athlete advisory committee, with senior Whitney Swain heading the group of Dons in their efforts to maintain a unified front throughout the department, bringing USF’s “Four Pillars of Success” to life on a daily basis. During the Hilltop Awards, Swain was presented with the inaugural Stephen Privett, S.J. Award, which will be given annually to a USF student-athlete who has demonstrated commitment to a higher standard of learning and social justice for their outstanding work in the San Francisco community. Along with serving as SAAC president, Swain took a leading role in organizing the Best Buddy Games, the department’s spring clothing drive and a career fair for student-athletes. She also organized the Harper for Kids Sportsmanship Day and volleyball’s Dig Pink breast cancer awareness efforts.

››TOURNAMENT TOPPERS Malina Terrell was named to the All-Tournament team at the Blue Raider Bash to open the season after leading the team with 46 kills and a .340 attack percentage in the Dons’ three matches in Murphreesboro, Tenn. At the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State, a pair of USF players earned all-tournament distinction, Valentina Zaloznik and Katarina Pilepic. Zaloznik paced the Dons with a team-high .359 hitting percentage as USF went 3-1 on the weekend. She posted and 19 total

SAND VOLLEYBALL 2014 USF VOLLEYBALL

SAND VOLLEYBALL ››2014 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS The Dons opened the 2014 campaign with a victory over Cal, marking the second-straight win on the sand and the fourth consecutive victory over the Bears after sweeping the East Bay foes on the hardwood in 2012. USF earned the hard-fought 3-2 win with victories at the Nos. 1, 3, and 5 positions, clinching in the fourth match to finish. USF’s sand program hosted for the first time ever, as the Dons welcomed then-No. 3 Hawaii and No. 6 UCLA to the Larkspur Courts in Piper Park. The three-match San Francisco Invitational was broadcast live from the park on theW.tv. After the Invitational, the Dons again hosted a ranked team in then-No. 9 Saint Mary’s, marking three-straight ranked opponents. USF’s matches against AVCA top 10 foes was a first for the program. The Dons downed Sacramento State 4-1 and swept Cal Poly to notch wins No. 2 and 3 on the year and picked up their fourth against San Jose State, also in sweeping fashion. The duo of Sara Staengle and Valentina Zaloznik again took the No. 1 spot in pairs play and finished with a mark of 5-5. The top tandem compiled wins against opponents from Cal, Sacramento State, Cal Poly, San Jose State and Stanford. Each of their victories was in straight sets. Emily Reed and Inbar Vinarsky compiled a team-best record of 7-3. The duo opened the year with a victory over Cal and later rolled off five-straight in the middle of the season before closing with a straight-set victory at Stanford.
