TRAILBLAZING CARE
Why so great in the Lone Star State? Year after year, our outcomes and outstanding care land us among the best of the best in the country. You see, for more than six decades, we’ve dedicated ourselves to pushing boundaries and exploring new territory in our quest to do right by each and every patient who comes through our doors.

WELCOME
Welcome to the sixth annual U.S. News Healthcare of Tomorrow conference. We’re delighted to have you with us for three days of wide-ranging discussions about the major challenges facing healthcare and the best practices being engineered in response. You’ll have the opportunity to hear from and meet thought leaders out on the front lines and exchange ideas and solutions with healthcare colleagues from around the country. As you’ll note when you study the agenda, the conference themes – developed with guidance from our advisory councils of executives at leading hospitals and health systems – reflect the central forces shaping care delivery into a much more dynamic, patient-centered, prevention-oriented enterprise, one in which hospitals are focused on preserving the health of their populations and, when possible, on keeping people out of their beds. In addition to recognizing the nation’s best hospitals annually, this past year U.S. News has joined forces with the Aetna Foundation to identify America’s Healthiest Communities, places where all sorts of stakeholders in public health are clearly achieving results. Please stop by the cocktail reception Thursday evening to join us in celebrating the project and recognizing some standouts. More than a buzzword, innovation is flourishing, and we’ll kick off the conference by hearing from four CEOs who are proactive about doing business differently: Marc Harrison of Intermountain Healthcare, which is banding together with other systems to tackle drug manufacturing; Kevin Lofton of Catholic Health Initiatives, a leader in addressing the social determinants of health; Eric Murphy of OptumInsight, a voice on the power of data analytics as well as the intriguing trend of companies in the business of insurance benefits getting into clinical practice; and Susan Story of American Water, one of the founding companies of the Health Transformation Alliance, which seeks to provide employees better treatment and coverage. The top executives at three of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals – MD Anderson, Dana-Farber and St. Jude – will explore the promise and realities of the latest treatments. Throughout the conference, experts will be weighing in on the potential of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. And, at time of uncertainty about the future of federal health policy, we’ll explore the likeliest next steps for value-based models of care and Medicaid reform. As usual, the Best Hospitals and Best Children’s Hospitals rankings team will be hosting sessions dedicated to questions and concerns about quality measurement. Don’t miss the other highlights of our three-day keynote program: unanticipated lessons on preparing for – and coping with – mass casualty events from representatives of hospitals in Orlando and Las Vegas; a conversation with FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb; and wisdom on battling the opioid epidemic from experts in the trenches of policy, medicine and law enforcement. As you know, U.S. News has followed the hospital industry closely for three decades. We hope that you benefit from the fruits of that long commitment, which has never been stronger. I encourage you to engage in the many dialogues among the industry professionals, policymakers and medical experts we have gathered here in the nation’s capital. Enjoy!

FOR THE FUTURE
We are City of Hope doctors, advancing science that saves lives. We have performed more than 14,000 bone marrow and stem cell transplants to treat cancer, with a 13-year record of unparalleled survival rates. Our research has led to the development of synthetic insulin and four of the most widely used cancer-fighting drugs. We are maximizing the potential of immunology and making precision medicine a reality. Bottom line, it’s not enough to promise future cures. We have to find them sooner. This is the passion that drives us every day. Find out more at CityofHope.org

It takes relentless innovation to power healthcare’s future. At Atrium Health, we’re not just pushing forward to solve our nation’s most pressing health challenges – we’re leading the quest to create the next generation of care. Pioneering population health
Harnessing the power of virtual care
Through our unique, nationally recognized model bringing primary and emergency care together under one roof, we’ve dramatically reduced unnecessary ED visits in a rural, historically underserved North Carolina community.
Deploying virtual technology to bring needed care right to the bedside, we’re linking patients across numerous locations and hundreds of miles to immediate stroke expertise, remote critical care and real-time mental health evaluation.
Shattering the opioid epidemic
Driving extraordinary outcomes
In a region ravaged by the opioid epidemic, we’ve prevented more than 6,500 opioid and sedative prescriptions through the firstof-its-kind, EMR-integrated alert system we created to identify patients most at risk for opioid addiction.
Topping national ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) benchmarks, we’ve significantly lowered length-of-stay and readmission rates for multiple complex surgeries through patient engagement and predictive analytics.

Motivated by a promise.
A promise to care for kids as we would our own has led to truly innovative care. In the 1960s, we introduced the Wilmington Brace, which revolutionized the treatment of scoliosis. Later, we developed the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton (WREX), which uses 3D printing to create a lightweight support system for kids with neuromuscular weaknesses, and we were a pioneer in the use of electronic health records with MyNemours. Today, Nemours employs more than 30 pediatric radiologists — a rare subspecialty — forming one of the largest of such groups in the nation, using imaging to diagnose and treat diseases. The Logistics Center at Nemours, a first of its kind, uses trained paramedics at a single location to monitor more than 200 inpatients per day at Nemours Children’s Hospital and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. The Center can send a rapid response team to a child in need with the press of a button. The Nemours App for asthma is a digital portal to help families of kids with asthma manage their condition and get support and care between doctor visits. Of course, we have a very good reason for all of these breakthroughs. It’s all part of our promise.
