From Our Blogoshere By Dr. Jim Martin, Principal

It Truly Takes a Village “It takes a village to raise a child” is an African proverb that gets passed around a lot. But what does it really mean? I’m not sure I fully grasped the meaning of this short and simple phrase until I became a parent. When I first became a parent almost two years ago, I tried to do everything myself. It was a sign of my superpowers as a parent— the fact that I didn’t need any help, didn’t need to ask for any help. I could manage it all by myself. Now, almost two years later, that tact has exhausted me. I can no longer single parent two challenging boys all by myself. Maybe it makes me less of a parent but I don’t think so. I have a whole new respect for the parents of kids at my school. This is a tough job. I think we as educators occasionally frown on parents who ask for or who appear to need help. I probably did the same thing as a teacher and new administrator. So I am using this blog space to acknowledge that I need help. I can’t do it alone. My superhero powers and my ego are deflated to the point where I no longer care what might be said about me. I need help from my parents. I need help from my friends and my significant other. When Hillary Clinton published her book It Takes a Village in 1996, I chuckled a little. I disagreed with the premise. I’m not sure exactly why—I just felt some disdain toward

the phrase and the notion. In schools, we see nontraditional families abound. One such nontraditional family that meets with a great deal of criticism is the extended family, where mom and dad might live alongside grandparents and aunts and cousins. I have heard educators criticize this structure because it creates chaos—too many bodies in too small of a space. I have also heard criticism leveraged based on the normalcy of such an arrangement. We Americans often balk at anything that falls out of the norm of mom and dad and kids. I wish I had a village living in my home so that I could go to the gym after my kids go to bed. So that I didn’t have to worry about the what and where associated with dinner every night. So that I could turn to someone, another adult, and say, “Really? Did you just see that? Can you believe that just happened?” As I am writing this, I am starting to believe that the idea of a village raising a child really is about sharing in the joy, the struggle, the challenge. Doing anything with someone else enhances the joy. Maybe the village is really about the support system that surrounds the parent, the support system that contributes to our mental health when faced with what seems to be the hardest job in the world.

Flip-Flop Safety: Truth vs Myth With temperatures warming and the end of school nearing, sandal season is here. Socks will soon be stuffed away as kids – and adults – grab their favorite flip-flops. But just how safe are those flip-flops? Maybe you’ve heard or read negative information about the popular summer sandal while wondering how something so comfortable could be harmful. Information on the safety of flip-flops can be confusing. So we went straight to the experts. We spoke with two orthopedic surgeons from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society about what’s fact and what’s fiction. Are flip flops truly bad for your feet? Surprisingly to us, both our foot experts said no. Dr. Florian Nickisch, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center, admits it’s a question he gets asked a lot. “Folks come in with certain aches and pains and then they ask me if it has anything to do with them wearing flip-flops. Then in the next sentence they say, ‘But I love flip-flops – they’re so comfortable.’ I usually say, ‘Well, if it’s comfortable, it’s probably not bad for you.’” Though Dr. Nickisch admits it’s possible to stub your toe or twist your ankle with the rubber shoes, he says they’re no worse than other sandals – and they’re actually better than high heels. “I don’t think I see more ankle injuries in the summer that I could blame on flip-flops. For day-to-day stuff I think they’re fine. I think people should wear what they are comfortable in.” Dr. Alexandra Page, an orthopedic surgeon in La Jolla, California, agrees. “There’s not a whole lot of data to say that a flip-flop is necessarily going to be better or worse than another shoe,” she emphasizes. “There are people who are in flip-flops continuously and very comfortable and very happy in that.”

Don’t you need arch support? Again, orthopedic experts say no. The foot is supportive enough on its own without any need for extra support. When it comes to kids, young children have flat feet – and their 10 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

arch develops naturally without additional help. “The structure of the foot is such that the arch it maintains and develops is so far mechanically more stable than anything you could put in it or under it,” explains Dr. Page. “If it doesn’t hurt kids, you don’t do a thing. If it’s painful, it needs to be evaluated. But in the absence of having pain, there’s no reason to use arch support.” For adults it’s simply a matter of comfort and personal preference. While arch support and orthotics do not change the shape of the foot, some people prefer more cushion, just like they may favor a softer mattress. If you feel better with more support, doctors say by all means use it. But unless you have an underlying problem like tendon inflammation, there’s no scientific evidence to prove arch support helps long term.

Are there times when you shouldn’t wear flip-flops? Yes. Ironically, one of the worst places to

wear your flip flops is in a wet environment like a pool. Since flip-flops aren’t attached to the back of your feet, if you trip on a slippery surface, it’s very easy to slip out of the shoe and twist your ankle or fall. For the same reason don’t wear flip-flops while hiking or walking on uneven ground. “With a flip-flop your shoe sort of grips the surface and you think you’re stable but you’re not because the shoe is not really connected to the foot,” says Dr. Page. “When you’re going to be on unpredictable rough ground, you would be better off with a protective shoe.” Since the slip-on style leaves your foot almost bare, it can also prove hazardous if you get in an accident riding a bicycle or motorcycle or operating an ATV or lawnmower when feet are often injured. Additionally, if you load or carry anything heavy wearing flip-flops, the extra weight puts more stress on your feet. Just like with running and playing sports, a thicker shoe helps absorb the energy and remove pressure from the feet.

Other Summer Foot Concerns Penetrating Injuries: Surgeons see more puncture wounds in the summer with kids playing outside barefoot. While it’s fine to be barefoot in the yard or park, in unknown surroundings kids should wear shoes. And if they do get something in their foot, you may not need to do anything. “You don’t always dig it out, particularly not in younger kids,” explains La Jolla orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alexandra Page. “The body is pretty good about doing one of two things: if it’s in there, it will either push it out and get rid of it or it sort of walls that off and builds a big scar ball around it. Then it becomes easy to find.” If it’s painful to stand or the foot is red, swollen or draining, see a doctor. Otherwise, let it go. Smelly Shoes: Kids’ feet sweat more than adults, and since many children and teens ditch the socks during summer, their shoes get moist, growing bacteria that cause a smell. (It can happen with adults, too.) The fix? Wear socks and switch out the shoes. “By changing your shoes out, they dry well in between,” advises Dr. Page. “It reduces the environment for something where fungus will live.” Antibacterial sprays can also help.

Just For Mom By Lisa Nord Seplak

Five Fun Ways to Celebrate Motherhood with Your Friends Does Mother’s Day start with your kids waking you up to homemade muffins and fresh flowers? Then, are they perfect angels throughout your relaxing, chore-free day? Or, like most moms is your reality a little different? Why not add a twist to the month of May and the celebrations of motherhood. Call up your mom friends and plan a “cheers to each other” gathering. You work hard, you play hard, so go on and celebrate each other and all that you do. Here are five fun ideas to get the party started.

Cheers to the Moms! Host a springtime luncheon for your friends. Plan a menu that includes a variety of salads to suit different tastes. Serve chicken salad, tuna salad, a colorful vegetable salad, pasta salad and fruit salad. Offer your guests something sparkling to drink – with or without alcohol. Be sure to toast each other for all the wonderful things you do as mothers throughout the year. Decorate your home with small, flowering plants – then give one to each mom as a gift when she leaves. Plan your party when the kids are in school. Or, hire a sitter or two to watch all the kids at a park or another mom’s home. It’s also fun to plan a lunch date out and leave the kids with dad.

Get Your Spring Style On Spring is here, so some style updating is in order for you and your friends. Exchange those yoga pants for the latest clothing trends. Check to see if the following lines have reps in your area: Etcetera (etcetera. com), CAbi – Carol Anderson by Invitation (cabionline.com), Kokoon (Kokoon.net) and host an in-house party. Add a little sparkle to the mix and invite a jewelry rep from Stella and Dot (stelladot.com), Silpada (silpada.com), or lia Sophia (liasophia.com). And don’t forget your beautiful face. Invite a Mary Kay rep and 12 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

try the latest makeup colors for spring and summer.

Stay Up All Night When was the last time you had a sleepover with your girlfriends? Enlist the dads to watch the kids and have your friends bring over sleeping bags for a good old fashioned slumber party. Ask everyone to bring her favorite at-home spa item and have a spa night, or have your friends bring a favorite movie, order some pizza and girl-talk all night long.

Celebrate the Weekend Remember the fun of TGIF parties from your younger, pre-baby days? It’s still a great way to kick off the weekend. Plan an outside party to begin around 5 p.m. when dads are coming home and can watch the kids. Make it a Flamingo Friday, decorate with kitschy pink flamingos and serve pink drinks like Cosmopolitans. Or celebrate Cinco de Mayo with margaritas and guacamole. If you’re in a Southern frame of mind, try a Kentucky Derby theme. Serve mint juleps in your most elegant glasses. Have your guests wear their favorite hat and you’re off to the races.

Put On Your Chef’s Hat Embark on a culinary adventure and take a cooking class with your friends. Check out the offerings at your local gourmet shop, department store or grocery store. Pick a menu and get cooking. Then play top chef and invite your friends and their spouses over so you can show your husbands what you’ve learned.

For all that you do as a mom throughout the year, you deserve a day to say “cheers” with your friends. Now go ahead and start planning. Lisa Nord Seplak is a freelance writer and mom who enjoys the occasional gathering with her girlfriends.

The Family Pet By Deb Snyder, PhD

The Dogma of Cats: Feline Philosophies for a Fulfilling Life We often think the keys to happiness are hidden in distant places, the deep recesses and highest heights of our world, kept in close guard by a humble monk or dynamic guru. These bits of philosophical brilliance dispensed only after we demonstrate tremendous sacrifice of time, energy or money to get there. Bah! Who can get to a mountaintop these days? Although I am one of the first to acknowledge nature is a powerful conduit to accessing our soul’s calling, the truth is…wisdom is all around us and we need only look to what surrounds us for the answers to the great questions in life. Can our best teachers come in the form of friends, the flowers in the front yard and even cats? Yes, I said it…cats. I admit it fully - I am a cat person. The often joked about “crazy cat lady” who is surrounded by felines in her home and does all she can to care for the local strays and the feral fluffy ones on the block. Our back porch always has little bowls of food and water for whoever chooses to saunter by. We work with the animal control officer to safely trap and neuter to keep the colony numbers in check. As if we have a kitty rescue sign on our door, many cats in trouble have found their way to us and we are happy to help them. I’ve always felt connected to cats. I get them and they get me. The inspiration to further explore the wisdom of cats came after witnessing a loved one’s painful predicament. A childhood companion, a mutual cat lover, was going through a miserable time in life. His difficulties, mostly 14 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

just a small sample of the feline philosophies, which can help you and your family live a more fulfilling life: Find Fun in Everything: Cats know how to have a good time. Yarn, paper bags, flickering sunlight and blowing leaves can all lead to hours of stimulation, free entertainment and exercise for a cat. The simplest of items become toys in their paws. It’s a powerful lesson for us. Where can we find our free fun in the simple moments? Show Affection: Nothing is more comforting than cuddling up with a pet, whether it’s a cat or a dog. Animals innately know when we need their love and they eagerly shower us with nuzzles, rubs and kisses. You know where you stand with a cat as they express their needs and feelings freely without fear of judgment. We can take a lesson from our feline friends by showing how we feel to those we love.

self-created from poor choices and addiction, pulled him into a very dark place in which he lost his career, marriage and many friends. It was tough to try to help, as he continued to cater to his ego and worried only about maintaining facades and spinning the facts to his favor. Like many others spiraling in crisis, he had little desire to delve deep and truly process his pain for the needed transcendence. He didn’t take my calls and I had to face the fact, he didn’t want my assistance, not as a spiritual advisor and not as a friend. He didn’t want to relate to people and only asked to be left alone with his cats. “If only he listened to his cats,” I thought. Cats know how to be happy, they know when to seek help and they will teach you profound lessons, if you are willing to learn. Would humans be better off

if we stopped personifying our beloved pets and began instead to allow ourselves to be “cat-ified?” With a new focus on discovering the beliefs, which make up the dogma of cats, I began to observe cat behavior with greater interest and concentration. How wonderful it would be to teach our children to look with us to our animal companions for guidance on happiness and heartwisdom! To step away from the ego obsessions associated with modern humanity and learn to simply be…at a more cat-like pace. It was time to look deeper and see what all the purring was about. The cats didn’t let me down. I witnessed this species of subtle sages demonstrate a slinky mindfulness and great respect of the world around them. Cats are healers. Cats are persistent and adaptable. Cats are wise. Here is

Forgive Quickly: How many times have you seen your darling kitties aggressively squabbling over the food dish or a new toy, then moments later all snuggled together sleeping on the bed like nothing happened? Cats live in the moment, fight in the moment and love in the moment. Living life as it comes is freeing and truth be told, holding grudges can be bad for your health. Know When to Rest: The act of grabbing a nap in the middle of the day has been named for these smart critters! No animal is more known for its ability to lounge frequently and bask in the warmth of the sun. When you’re feeling depleted catch a catnap to restore your energy and be ready to play. Appreciate Your Unique Beauty: Despite having a tattered ear, snaggletooth and an occasional flea in their fur, cats know at their core they

are wonderful. Not an arrogant beauty or one that comes from putting up a false front, cats exude a confidence and grace simply by being themselves, in whatever form that takes. A stray is often as lovely as a show cat and neither judges the other for it. What a life we could lead if we all thought of each other as cool cats! So next time you are feeling overwhelmed, when life doesn’t

seem to be going your way, look to feline wisdom. The dogma of cats just may save the day! The First Year of Summer Camp Blues Tips for Parents to Stay Positive and Worry-free While Your Child Attends Camp After months of searching for the right camp, filling out reams of paperwork, and cramming a month’s worth of cloths and personal items into a 34 x 18 trunk, opening day at camp has arrived. Your camper is nervous and a little excited. You, on the other hand, are freaking out. The first summer at sleep away camp is a big deal. My own daughter had never spent more than few nights away from home before she set off for two weeks at a beautiful lake in northern New England. As we drove to camp, my mind was an internal battlefield. Was I making the right decision sending her away? Will she be safe? Make friends? The camp was beautiful. After a smooth check-in she said goodbye and ran off to greet her new cabin mates. I was a wreck. Worrying is part of a parent’s job description. A little anxiety about camp is fine and easy to hide. Big anxiety is bad for you and your camper and could ruin the experience for everyone. Here are five tips to stay calm and positive while your child is away at camp.

Spend Time Together Before Camp To beat the blues, do some work up front, before opening day. The two weeks leading up to camp is rushed, but find some one-onone time together and make the most of it. A simple lunch date or a few long walks to talk about concerns will ease anxiety for both. If time allows, plan a family summer vacation or weekend away. Siblings may feel anxious and upset about a separation from a brother or sister and cancelling the trip to the beach will make it worse. Creating new memories as a family will help ease everyone’s anxiety.

Breath (Try Not to Cry) If your camper is anxious at drop off, 24 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

mom or dad losing it in the lunch line won’t help. Have faith and confidence in the camp director and counselors. You’ve done your homework selecting the camp; it’s time to trust the experts who run the place. Before you leave, meet the nurse, the camp counselors, and the folks who work in the kitchen, whoever and whatever it takes to make you feel better. When it is time to leave, kiss, hug and go. Don’t fuss or secretly stalk the cabin to make sure everything’s OK (not that I’ve ever done that). Stop for an ice cream on the way home, it will make you feel better.

Keep Busy An idle mind is a worried mind. If the school year is full of driving duties and kid’s activities, you’ll have free time. Use the downtime to get outside and exercise, even if it’s just a walk around the block. Catch up on your household To Do list. Paint the bathroom or the chair you bought at a yard sale last summer. How about a romantic dinner with your spouse, or a girl’s night with friends? This freedom won’t last, make the best of it. If you still have a child (or children) at home use camp time to plan some fun outings and special one-on-one time. Pursue activities that your older, camp-going child deemed too babyish. The younger child will appreciate the attention.

Write letters (But not everyday) My daughter’s camp banned electronics and phone contact between parents and campers. The only communication was via the US Postal Service. Our postal worker and I became great friends that summer as I lurked around the mailbox waiting for a letter.

To combat homesickness, leave a letter with the camp office before you leave camp. It will be delivered in the first few days and provide some needed reassurance. Provide your camper with self-addressed stamped envelopes for a faster response. Kids know when parents are upset; keep letters light and positive. Ask other family members or friends to write; the camper will feel missed and loved, but not overwhelmed by mom’s anxious (but trying to be positive) prose.

Best Thing Ever - Online Pictures Today’s camps are online and update pictures each day. It’s a lifesaver for worried parents. For two weeks, I obsessively checked the camp’s website searching for a glimpse of my daughter. Sweet relief came with pictures of her smiling face, having fun, with her arm around a new friend. Before I knew it, camp ended and we headed home. She was exhausted and happy to see me, when asked about next year she replied with an emphatic “Yes!” Maybe it’s time to take up a new hobby? Janine Queenin is a writer, mom and social secretary for two kids aged 11 and 9. She and her daughter are ready for summer camp (mostly her daughter).

Summer Planner By Malia Jacobson

Sweeter Dreams at Sleepaway Camp Help Children Sleep Well On Overnight Adventures This year, 10 million children will tote their sleeping bags to camp. But they may not do much sleeping. For many children, overnight camp is the first time they’ve slept away from their family for more than a night or two. Add an unfamiliar bed, strange nighttime noises, and the overall excitement of camp, and it’s no wonder many kids come home from camp severely overtired. So while you’re helping them pack their bags, take a few extra steps to help kids sleep well. With the shut-eye they need, they’ll enjoy all camp has to offer— and return refreshed, happy, and ready to fill you in on all of their adventures.

Pack Some Comfort Don’t forget to pack Teddy. According to leading pediatrician and The Happiest Baby on the Block author Harvey Karp, M.D., comfort items like special stuffed animals and pillows become particularly important when kids sleep in an unfamiliar place, because they create a soothing sense of security at bedtime. Older kids might appreciate a small framed photo of the family or a note from mom and dad.

Check Nighttime Temps While you’re checking the daytime weather forecast for your child’s camp destination, make sure to check the nighttime forecast too. Nighttime temperatures may be much lower—or higher—than what your child is used to, particularly if he’ll be sleeping in a cabin or tent. Pack several pairs of pajamas and thick socks for layering. 38 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

Head Off Embarrassing Moments Around 7-10 percent of kids wet the bed at age 8—an age at which many kids are considering their first sleepaway camp experience. If your child is anxious about the possibility of an accident and mortified at the thought of packing disposable training pants, talk to her pediatrician. Avoid scolding your child about bedwetting or placing too much emphasis on the topic before camp, as this can create added anxiety. Pediatric urologist Steve Hodges, M.D., of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, says a short-term prescription for a medication like desmopressin, which slows nighttime urine production, can provide a temporary solution for camps and other circumstances that make bedwetting especially embarrassing.

in timid campers. Consider packing a white noise machine from home, earplugs (try the plugs out first to make sure they’re comfy) so your child can drift off to sleep in silence, or an iPod and earbuds, if music is the preferred sleep soundscape.

Send Moonlight Munchies

Home Sleepy Home

After an action-packed day at camp, young campers may feel their stomachs growl just as the counselor announces “Lights out!” If camp rules allow it, pack a few pre-bedtime snacks so they don’t hit the sack hungry. Whole-grain crackers, granola, cold cereal, and protein bars travel well; tryptophan-rich foods like nuts, sunflower seeds, or soybeans score added sleepy-points.

No matter what you do, kids probably won’t adhere to their regular sleep schedule at camp. “When they return, getting back to the normal routine is important,” says pediatric sleep specialist Krisztina Harsanyi, M.D., of Children’s of Alabama hospital. It may take a few days to a week to adjust to their regular schedule, so Harsanyi advises postponing sleepovers and trips until after kids have spent some quality time catching up on sleep.

Say No to Noise A child who is particularly sensitive to noise may find camp’s group-sleeping arrangements disconcerting. And strange outdoor sounds can trigger nighttime fears

Summer Planner compare.

From the National Drowning Prevention Alliance

Pool Season Is Just Around the Corner Another fun summer splish-splashing at the pool is right around the corner. The pool is a place of fun, play, adventure, and growth. Yet, we must remember that water can be dangerous; less than 30 seconds can have devastating consequences at the pool. As we prepare for the summer, we must reflect on pool safety. There are three main rules of pool safety for to follow: active watching, safe playing, and fast response. Active watching is the most important safety precaution parents can take—key word being active. While it is tempting to sit back and relax in the pool chair, parents need to remain ever alert. It only takes a few seconds for a small child to wander away to deeper water and danger. Never assume someone else is watching your child in the pool area, including the lifeguards. Lifeguards are there as a safeguard, but are not babysitters for the pool. There is no substitution for a parent’s wary eye. Maintain constant visual contact with children at all times while in the pool area. If there is more than one adult present, designate a “water watcher” to maintain

42 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

constant supervision of the children. Never let a young child in a pool without an adult accompanying them. While swimming, keep children within arms length at all times. This close proximity allows you to rescue a distressed swimmer before they enter the active drowning stage. Safe play is the second safety precaution to prevent accidents in the pool. Step in and regulate play to ensure the safety of all children. Dunking and pushing could cause children to panic and swallow large amounts of water. Rough horseplay can also lead to fear of the water for the children. Always designate safe zones for each child based on her swimming ability. Most pools drop in depth rather quickly. Within one step, children can be in water over their heads. Be sure to check the depth changes before establishing the safe zones. When swimming in the pool, life jackets are the best flotation devices for weaker swimmers. However, never rely solely on flotation devices, even life jackets, to atone for poor swimming skills. The best safeguard is an ever-vigilant adult—no equipment could

Finally, in case of an emergency, a fast response is essential. Mere seconds make all the difference in preventing death or injury due to drowning. For fast responses, parents must learn to recognize the symptoms of drowning. Active drowning is nothing like Hollywood depictions—it is a quick and silent process. The active drowning position is vertical, chin tilted towards the surface, and arms pressing down on the surface of the water. Physiologically, drowning people cannot perform voluntary movements like waving for help, reaching for rescue equipment, or moving towards a rescuer because the body is in survival mode. If a parent is ever in doubt, pull the child from the water. If the active drowner is not rescued, they will soon lose consciousness, which could lead to serious injury or death. Watch children actively and if you see signs of drowning, do not hesitate to act yourself. Never assume someone else will act, including lifeguards. The pool is a great place for fun memories, but treat it with the caution it deserves. Let’s all follow the three safety guides, active watching, safe play, and fast response, to have a fun, safe time at the pool! Family Travel By Tonya Papanikolas

Tasty Utah Travel Farms, Food Plants and Candy Factories the Kids Will Love If you’re looking for something fun and inexpensive to do with the kids, consider showing them where their food comes from while giving them a memorable adventure. Utah boasts a nice variety of plants, factories and farms that invite families to see how they grow or make their fare. The best part? You almost always get to sample local goodies. So pack up the kids and get them ready for a tasty treat.

CHEESE & MILK Families can visit the Heber Valley Creamery (home to Heber Valley Artisan Cheese and Heber Valley Milk) in Midway on Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. One of their cheesemakers will take you on a guided tour of the cheese plant. Taste the cheese right out of the vat and visit their aging cave. At the retail store look for their award-winning Wasatch Back Jack cheese. The company’s cows graze next door at Canyon View Farm, which offers tours from late May to September. A farm employee shows off

the milking parlor and you can typically feed and pet a baby calf yourself. Farm and creamery tours cost $5 each. Call 435-6540291 for reservation. Address: 920 North River Road, Midway. The Cache Valley’s Rockhill Creamery in Richmond opens their historic farm to the public June through October. Tour the micro dairy Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. when they also hold a small farmer’s market – often with live music. Check out cows in the pasture and a 1940s granary where they sell cheese. Walk down to the underground aging room where a slideshow explains the cheese-making process. Tour is self-guided. Address: 563 S. State St., Richmond. Sweet Deseret Farm in Ogden is a goat dairy run by the Babcock family. They set up public tours in the evenings and weekends. Their baby goats, chicks and Great Pyrenees puppies are a hit with the kids.

Growing Up Online By Carolyn Jabs

The New Peer Pressure Has your child been nominated? Not for class president or team captain. The new way to nominate is to post something outrageous online and then “tag” friends who are expected to top the performance. Some of these so-called “nek nominations” are silly, harmless fun, but many involve alcohol, drugs or sex. And kids who don’t want to participate may find that they are teased or even bullied. Peer pressure is nothing new, of course, but new research indicates that social media can exacerbate the problem, making young people more likely to engage in risky behaviors in the hope of winning attention and approval from other teens. One study, by researchers in Belgium, confirmed that peer pressure often plays a role in sexting. Even kids who know it isn’t a good idea to exchange explicit photos may get involved because the short-term boost in popularity seems more important to adolescents than the long term damage to reputation and selfesteem. Decisions about drugs and alcohol are also heavily influenced by what happens in online friendship networks according to research done recently at the University of Southern California. Even parents who have Facebook accounts aren’t likely to see much of what goes on in social media, partly because teens are migrating to other sites such as Vine, Snapchat, Instagram and What’s App. Rather than trying to monitor everything a child does on and offline, parents need to be proactive, equipping teens with information and skills that will help them set appropriate boundaries and live up to their own ideals regardless of what their friends do. Here are some suggestions:

Assume your child is under pressure. In its annual survey of substance use, the National Center on Addiction and Substance 70 UTAHFAMILY.COM APRIL/MAY 2014

Abuse at Columbia University reported that

Talk often about values.

45% of teens have seen social media pictures

Be sure your child has a clear sense of your expectations. Just as important, talk about the reasons behind the rules you make. “Because I said so” may be adequate for younger children, but your teenager deserves a deeper explanation of what kind of life you hope he or she will lead and why you think drinking, drug use and casual sex might interfere with his or her prospects.

showing other teens getting drunk, passed out or using drugs. Teens don’t necessarily talk about these photos because they don’t want to get friends in trouble, but the images have an influence. The same report found that 47% of teens who had seen such photos were convinced the participants were having a terrific time.

Clarify consequences. Researchers now know that the part of the brain that is able to anticipate long-term consequences doesn’t develop until late in adolescence. Social media reinforces shortterm thinking with photos that show the fun of partying without the aftermath which can be unpleasant and even tragic. Parents have to compensate by making the dark side of teen sex and substance abuse equally vivid. Be sure your child understands that there can be lifelong consequences from driving drunk, being arrested while under the influence, distributing pornography and having unprotected or underage sex.

much less dangerous.

Be willing to argue. Even when you start with the best of intentions, conversations with teenagers are likely to become confrontational. That’s OK. Researchers at the University of Virginia found that kids who had the confidence to stand up to their parents and argue their point of view were also more likely to resist peer pressure. Even when it seems that your child isn’t listening, keep calm and stay focused on the issue of the moment rather than getting distracted by attitude.

Use the tools to take control. Rehearse refusal. Teens are often convinced that, if they don’t do what a friend wants, they’ll lose the friendship. They will be better prepared to resist pressure if they have thought ahead about things they might say or post when they want to turn down a request. Humor helps. So does changing the subject or suggesting an alternative activity. Remind your child that true friends don’t push each other into situations that are uncomfortable

Facebooks’s untag feature is a highly effective way to eliminate posts from people who are pressuring a teen to do something stupid or dangerous. (Go to the activity log by clicking the downward arrow at the top of any FB page. Click Photos and select the problem photo. Select “Remove Tags”. ) Even better, encourage your child to activate the ability to “Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline.” (Click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner

and then choose “Settings.” Select Timeline and Tagging and choose “Review posts.”)

Harness peer pressure for good. After analyzing over a billion status updates on Facebook, a research team from the University of California, San Diego, found that positive posts inspired positive responses. Encourage your kids to engage in good deeds and random acts of kindness. Then they can nominate friends to top those accomplishments. The power of social media often seems overwhelming but parents have power too. Talking frankly about the kinds of online pressures kids may encounter gives them the opportunity to think ahead so that, when the time comes, they are better equipped to made decisions in the moment that they won’t regret in the future.
