Núria Graham
We’re chatting with the singer, songwriter, and guitarist about life in La Bisbal d’Empordà, her global tours, and her new album Cyclamen.
You’ve been living in La Bisbal for a few years now, right?

I’ve hit a new record for living in the same place [laughs]. I’ve been here for three years now and it’s great. My last album was all done here.
Does the Empordà seem to attract talent and creativity?
There’s an energy here. People are really open in La Bisbal. There’s also a bit of madness. That suits my personality just fine [laughs].
How was your tour of the United States and Canada?
It was a beautiful experience, a contrast to daily life. It’s like the world got smaller. It’s also like starting over here: you have to win the audience back.
Do you appreciate changes to the setting?
I’m getting to know myself better all the time and respect myself more, especially with important moments in life: I’ve learned to know what I need.
Would you say your discography like a puzzle?
Cyclamen is different from my other albums because I had new things to share. It’s a puzzle, but the album isn’t exclusively mine.
Marjorie (2020) explored your roots. Is your new album more of a musical imaginary?
I was much more playful, starting with the decision to produce it myself. I made the important decisions on the album individually, which is a challenge.
Nature played a significant role again, correct?
Dialogue with nature is a vital need: the need to connect with something greater than oneself. It’s relaxing to consider nature’s power and how humanity isn’t so important.
The album displays rhetorical questions and surrealist lyrics. I ask myself a lot of questions and I don’t find many answers. Many of the lyrics are a real mystery. Six months after it came out, I’m still wondering what Cyclamen is about [laughs].
There’s also a lot of humor and irony and something of the grotesque.
I try to naturalize death with a sense of humor or by being risqué. I always wrote lyrics without paying much attention, but on this album I was more conscious. That’s why it represents me so much.
Is
it possible to give you a label?
As a musician, I don’t really believe in styles. I like music, whatever kind. When I make a record I let the songs take over. I know I make music, but I don’t know what style it is [laughs]. //
