DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The R. Phillip Burns, MD, FACS, Endowed Chair in Surgery has been established to honor the dedication, leadership, and overall excellence of Dr. R. Phillip Burns. Dr. Burns served as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the UT Health Science Center’s College of Medicine – Chattanooga for 46 years. This initiative will ensure that the Department of Surgery in Chattanooga strategically honors and amplifies Dr. Burns’ legacy of extraordinary commitment to surgical training and patient care excellence indefinitely. A named endowed chair indicates that a department and residency program are supported by many distinguished individuals which can increase the visibility and credibility of the program. Additionally, named chairs can attract top talent to a program, which can enhance the program’s overall success, potentially attracting more funding and providing overall financial stability.
