A few things in the industry that I have learned over 15 years:

1. Start Early I can never say this enough with so many changes in the world and in business, do not rely on the thought, “Oh, I’ll be able to find somebody who can do that.” This is a statement I hear all the time and it is usually from people who waited too long to find the right person for the job. Weddings are already stressful enough, let alone finding the right team of people to support you on your special day. If you find a business that can take care of your needs don’t wait till it’s too late, book them fast.

3. Time Something there is never enough of is time. It can fly by or it can take forever. However, that perspective can change depending on the amount of fun or work the day brings us. Work hard before your big day, then let the day happen so that the fun can make it fly by and feel as unforgettable as possible.

Take time to plan out your priorities in advance, consult with your family, write it out, and give yourself time to plan out the possibilities.

SamSincerely,Dennison, Destination DJ President, My Montana Wedding

It’s 2011 I’m a freshman and he’s a senior. I have the biggest crush on him but don’t dare mention it. Fast forward to summer of 2015, I’m going into my sophomore year of college and he’d recently moved back to our hometown. Thanks to mutual friends our paths cross and I find that crush feeling never went away. It was that first love, couldn’t get enough of it, staying up all night on the phone kind of feeling. It’s like our souls already knew each other. So, after graduation I moved in with him and a year later, he proposed in a cabin on the Des Moines river. Of course, I said “yes,” even though all I could think was, “finally!”

Growing up in Iowa the standard wedding is hosted in a barn style venue. I never imagined my wedding being any different until I met Cody. He wasn’t interested in a barn wedding or a long invite list. Both of us being intrigued by the west found ourselves planning every vacation to Montana. When we began talking about our wedding (years prior to a proposal), a Montana wedding was all we ever discussed. He found a link, “How to Elope in Glacier National Park,” that took us directly to Marianne’s website. I was instantly sold! We made it our own special day by taking a few of our closest family and friends for a short intimate wedding where we threw back shots, ate cake on the tailgate of a truck and watched the sunset on top of Logan’s Pass. Now, our family and friends understand why we are in love with the great state of Montana. If you’re planning to elope in a National Park be sure to get and submit your “Special use Permit Application.” You just never know when the National Park Service is going to crash your wedding! Yes, this happened to us and yes, I was a nervous wreck but thank goodness I had Marianne by my side.

We grew up near each other in rival cities and had mutual friends but we never met until after high school. Justin was very persistent in trying to date me and believes he fell in love on our first date. I on the other hand knew I was in love with him when I first laid eyes on him and knew once we started dating we would be together forever. We have not yet married, the photos were from a styled photo shoot but I know he is the one and I know he is going to read this and so I would like to ask him now. J. Charles will you marry me?

Both of us being from Montana and going to rival colleges, we had heard about one another from friends. Our paths didn’t officially cross until 2019. I (Whitney) was living in Missoula at the time where I was teaching and Tucker was finishing out his senior year in Butte at Montana Tech. We spent our weekends driving back and forth to see each other and the more we hung out, we quickly began to realize that what we had was undeniably special. We very quickly became best friends and loved every second we got to spend together. Even though it had only been a few months of dating, we couldn’t deny the love we had for one another. Fast forward to August of 2020, 8 months after we started dating, Tucker proposed in a beautiful spot along the river that runs through Missoula. Our story is a true example of “when you know, you know.”

The venue we chose was a huge way we made our wedding specific to us. Both Tucker and I throughout our lives have spent so much time in the Flathead area that we knew we wanted our wedding to be there as its somewhere that is near and dear to our hearts. Remember that at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you get to marry the love of your life. Wedding planning can get overwhelming and stressful but don’t let any of the small things overshadow what the wedding is all about; you and your future husband. So, let all of the small things go, realize that some things are out of your control, and get ready to truly have the best day of your life.

Though I am obviously biased, I truly think our wedding was amazing. From the day Tucker and I started planning our wedding we had a very clear vision as to how we wanted our day to go/look. At the forefront of everything, we wanted everyone to really feel the love we shared and we wanted to create an environment that felt like one huge family. We chose an entirely outdoor, rustic wedding venue, we had lawn games, BBQ, and seating that was laid out in a way that felt like everyone was at giant picnic tables. We wanted a wedding where people could kick off their shoes, let loose, and just have fun. Not only was our dance floor packed the entire night, if you walked around the venue the constant chatter amongst family, friends, and strangers was astounding. It was like a huge family reunion even though most people really didn’t know each other that well since Tucker is from Kalispell and I Missoula.

We were both transplants in the beautiful city of Charlotte, North Carolina. We met at a mutual friends’ Friendsgiving dinner. Joel made fancy mac and cheese and Bridgette made homemade stuffing. It was love at first bite and we were inseparable ever since. We both love to travel and see new places. Neither of us had been to Glacier National Park before, so exploring it together before we started our journey as husband and wife was perfect for us! And how many people can say they were photo-bombed by a mountain goat on their wedding day?! Eloping is the way to go if traditional wedding planning stresses you out! Carrie Ann’s elopement package took care of everything for us, so we could focus on each other and soak up all the memories that week! Our wedding week was so intimate, adventurous, and fun! We wish we could relive our wedding week over and over!

I think people would describe me as a very organized person, but if I were to do it all over again I would think more seriously about hiring a wedding planner or at least a day of coordinator. When you first start planning, you don’t realize how many tiny details need to come together at just the right moment for everything to work out like you wanted. Plus, although a wedding planner might sound expensive, they have access to discounts and other decorative items you can borrow that will save you money in the long run.

Josh and I met while attending the University of Montana in our early 20s. Our first date was at the climbing gym on campus. We quickly fell head over heels and started spending all of our time together. Josh led me all over the western states climbing, hiking, and exploring. We spent many nights sleeping in the back of Josh’s Prius on a crash pad while we drove along the coast on our way to the next climbing area. Over the next seven years, through life’s obstacles, our love and support for each other grew. At the top of one of Montana’s most beautiful hikes, he told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and I agreed!

At first glance, our wedding might have looked like any other, but it was in the details that made our wedding unique and special to us. Growing up in Missoula, Josh feels most at home on a river bank, so saying our vows on the Flathead river felt very fitting. Also, as a piano player myself, it was important to me to have live piano music at our ceremony. One of the most talked about parts of our wedding were the cupcakes. They were decorated to match the bouquets and tasted delicious. Plus, there was no need for extra plates, forks, or clean-up!

Both of us enjoy being in the outdoors and knew when we got married that we wanted it to be in a nature-centric setting. When we first visited Mountainside Weddings in 2019, we knew this was the place for us. The pavilion is a perfect space to host a reception—ample room for dining, dance floor and lawn games, and the venue is nestled in the woods, so many opportunities for photo ops and enjoying the outdoors. They helped us customize the decor, layout, vendors and really made it easy for us to make this event truly “ours.” We found a lot of our vendors through resources like My Montana Wedding, Instagram, and vendor referrals. Take time to browse these and other resources! We were so happy with everyone we worked with to make this weekend extra special and it was truly a weekend of festivities we will never forget.

We met in August 2010 in law school when we were assigned to the same class section of approximately 30 people. Although Kai made some subtle moves early on— asking questions about “homework”—we spent our first year mostly becoming close friends, studying together, volunteering together, and playing intramural basketball.

Back on campus for our second year of law school, we have our first official date (in Monica’s view). We continue to date throughout school and begin long distance in 2013, with Monica moving to LA and Kai back home to Montana. In 2017, we sensibly decided we should live in the same place! Soon after, we became dog parents, adopting from the local shelter “Santo,” an outdoorsy, pint-sized terrierchihuahua mix (who served as our handsome ring-bearer)! With Santo’s help, Kai proposed to Monica on the shores of Lake Wenatchee, WA in the Cascade Mountain Range! It was very important for us that 1) our wedding weekend reflect bits and pieces of us individually and as a couple; and 2) provide plenty of opportunities for our families and friends to spend time together and have fun! Lawn games go hand in hand with a great beach day or BBQ! We used the cornhole set graciously gifted to us by the venue. One of Monica’s friends brought an inflatable shark costume for a “land shark” outing at our joint bachelor/bachelorette party in Santa Barbara. The shark made a number of surprise appearances throughout our wedding weekend, including the dance floor. The DJ, not skipping a beat, immediately turned on “Baby Shark, do-do-do-do.”

Our wedding day was perfect! It was in the beautiful Flathead Valley and we got so lucky with the weather. I think the best part about it was the venue. The area was secluded but close enough for our friends and family to join us. We love being surrounded by the trees and mountains and it made for the perfect background for pictures. Use Montana to your advantage. Anywhere you go is going to be beautiful. Don’t stress too much because the day will perfect no matter what. All that matters is you get to marry the love of your life.

We met in middle school at Whitefish Christian Academy. After going our separate ways in high school we found our way back to each other. We both wanted to get married in our home, Montana. Mountainside Weddings provided the perfect place for our families to come together and to celebrate our love. They made everything so perfect and personal to us. It was particularly special for Hope because she grew up in her parents house not too far from the venue. Our theme was sunflowers because that was Hope’s nickname from her grandpa growing up and she wanted to honor him. Try not to stress. Rely on the people you have to help, that is what they are there for. Enjoy every little moment because they usually only happen once in your life. There is no better venue than Mountainside Weddings. They make your whole wedding look come together, better than you could have imagined it, and make it completely stress free so you can enjoy your friends and family while they do the work. And it is so beautiful out there. There is also no one better to capture it than Carrie Ann Photography. Her pictures are so bright and beautiful. She makes you feel completely comfortable during every moment so you can enjoy those precious memories forever.

It was the spring of 2015 and both Casey and Charlie attended a favorite country concert, Eric Church. Both being from Great Falls, MT but attending rival high schools our paths never crossed until that spring. Lots of mutual friends, similar interests and a love for country music, it didn’t take long for our relationship to begin! Charlie would travel to Libby all summer as Casey was building a dam in the area. Having spent lots of summer nights driving on dirt roads and listening to Aaron Watson this soon became our favorite thing to do together. Fast forward a couple years we made the move home to Great Falls. When we aren’t busy working and playing we spend our time with our favorite companion, Howie. We got engaged March 22, 2019 at Sage Lodge in Paradise Valley, MT. It was Charlie’s 31st birthday and Casey decided to get down on one knee. Things didn’t go as planned because Charlie never stops talking to people she meets and finally after a dinner with friends Casey said, “this ring has been burning a hole in my pocket all day.”

Our wedding was unique because we had 300+ people from all over the world spend an entire weekend in our home state. We didn’t do a traditional wedding party but rather had our closest friends and family as “friends and family of honor” walk down the aisle and sit in the first few rows. Most of our friends have been lifetime friends and all of our wedding party was from Montana. We wrote our own vows, had close friends speak and our dear friend Morgan sing! We added tons of details to include family, our dog Howie, and details from our life together. Our band kept the party rolling and everyone dancing! Our officiant has been a dear friend of the groom his entire life and very close to the bride since they began dating more than six years ago.

Getting married is a once in a lifetime dream and the best weekend of your life with all the closest people you love. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, live in the moment and hire Empress for day of planning!

We met in high school, 2011, in Whitefish. Once the school year was over we decided to meet up one summer day and ended up hanging out with each other all summer! Our bond and love grew very quickly once we realized we weren’t just a young couple dating, we truly were best friends and our goals and interests aligned perfectly. We ended up moving to Missoula together for college a couple years later (go Griz!), and still live there today! Two degrees, one house, two dogs, and 10 years later we’ve tied the knot; and the rest is history! I knew I wanted my wedding to be simple, fun and elegant, nothing too over-the-top. After all we are simple people but do enjoy some finer things in life! I chose a non-traditional time of year to have a wedding because I find winter to be very beautiful and underrated, you can’t beat snow capped mountains in Montana! I also wanted the color palette to be very neutral, white flowers, browns, and muted colors, everything to match the organic colors of the winter outdoor environment. I wanted most of our photos to be taken outside and those colors on that January Montana day did not disappoint! We also chose a non-traditional ceremony by doing a first look and sharing our personal vows privately together outside.

The guest list was relatively small, which helped make a comfortable, intimate vibe inside the venue. Just our closest friends & family, who we shared laughs, tears, drinks and plenty of dancing! Embrace the weather, whether it’s raining, snowing, or blue skies, they will all make beautiful memories & photos with Montana as your backdrop! I like to think everything turned out so perfectly because of the amazing support we had during the planning process, all of our amazing vendors, and sticking to our vision until the end! Planning can be very stressful so take advantage of all the help you can get! It is 100% your day so stay true to yourself and your ideas!

We met in a little cozy coffee shop in Boston. Chris was a new student in the city, and Naomi was a native Bostonian recently back in town. Her plan was to be in Boston for only a couple months. When she met Chris though, she knew she had to stay. One of our earliest and happiest memories of dating was our first weekend away together, which was winter camping. Even though we nearly froze to death, we learned a lot about each other, what we wanted out of life, and that we both saw how mishaps could be adventures. Aside from the location and winter theme, our wedding was unique because every aspect truly reflected us as a couple. From the decor to the “first look” set in an aspen grove on the property, everything we selected for the wedding was a natural choice and never felt forced. Whenever we had to make a decision, we always asked ourselves what made sense to us as a couple and what would be best for our guests. Celebrating with an intimate group of family and friends in such a breathtaking setting really sealed the entire experience for us. Our number one piece of advice is to hire a wedding planner. Once we found Katie, everything just fell into place. Selecting the venue was the first decision-point, and this set the tone for knowing our Montana winter wedding vision was coming to life. Not only was Katie on the same page as us, but she knew all the local vendors, the vibe of the area, and could help tailor everything for the location and our budget. A wedding in Montana is guaranteed to be gorgeous no matter the venue or time of year, but having a wedding planner who is an expert at bringing ideas to fruition is not only going to elevate the wedding as whole, but ensure that the experience is going to be fun and stress-free.

We met in college at a school in Erie, Pennsylvania. From the beginning, we would take small weekend trips to different places to explore new areas. The summer of 2017, Nicole accepted an internship in NYC and Brian was staying in Erie to work. We decided before going our separate ways we would take a cross-country trip driving from Pennsylvania to Tennessee to Colorado and back, stopping in other places along the way. That trip tested our relationship (and our music preferences during 10+ hour car rides). Looking back, we always say that trip, even though we had been dating for nearly two years at the time, was the moment we truly knew how deep our love was for each other. Going to Glacier National Park for our special day continued our love for exploring, allowing us to mark off our tenth national park together.

Nicole’s dad grew up in Plentywood, MT and he would go to Flathead Lake every summer growing up. He always talked about taking a family trip to that side of Montana because, in his words, “it’s one place you can’t live your life not seeing.” When he unexpectedly passed away, we both knew we had to get married in Montana. We had to be surrounded by a place he loved. Walking down the aisle, looking at my friends and family with the mountains as the backdrop, we knew Nicole’s dad was smiling ear to ear knowing all of these people finally got to experience his happy place. We also hosted a welcome party the day before the wedding with lots of local goodies (custom huckleberry jams, huckleberry gummies, etc.) to thank everyone for traveling so far for our special day!

Since we live in Wisconsin, getting a wedding planner was a must for me. Katie was amazing to work with, and took our Pinterest inspired dream and made it come true. We had the most simple wedding with back yard games and a fun food truck after supper. It wasn’t a normal wedding but was fit just for us. Make the most out of the scenery; it’s such a beautiful backdrop. Also, if you get the chance, do an adventure session with your photographer in Glacier National Park. Carrie Ann helped answer so many of our questions related to wedding permits, locations in the park, rules for number of guests/vehicles, etc. She also helped ease our stress around changes and closures due to the pandemic. It was difficult to plan a wedding in Many Glacier because it was closed for most of 2020 and did not open until one month before our wedding! If someone wants to get married on the East side of the park, book lodging for your guests as soon as possible. The rooms at Many Glacier Hotel booked a full year in advance, which we were not anticipating. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure enough rooms at Many Glacier for our guests and had to improvise by staying at St. Mary Village. We were unable to reserve a block of rooms anywhere nearby, so we paid for our guests rooms just to make sure everyone had somewhere to stay on the wedding night.

We met in 2015 at an indoor rock climbing gym near Atlanta, GA. I (the bride) am typically very shy, but I approached him and introduced myself. After a couple of weeks of rock climbing together, Daniel asked me on our first date. We both knew this was something special from the start, so it’s no surprise that we fell in love after the first couple of months. We dated for four years before getting engaged at Yosemite National Park. After we got engaged in Yosemite National Park, we were trying to decide on a destination wedding at another national park. We fell in love with the mountains and scenery in Carrie Ann’s photography on social media a few weeks into our search. She is the reason we decided on Glacier National Park! We always knew we wanted a small wedding with just immediate family and best friends. We had 11 of our closest family and friends in attendance, which made it more intimate and special to us. We had difficulty planning a meal after our ceremony due to our photography package, so we had a nice rehearsal dinner at Grouse Mountain Lodge the night before the wedding. For the night of the wedding, the mother of the bride made bags of wedding favors for the guests that included all the supplies for a picnic including blankets, plates, silverware, champagne and champagne flutes, and dessert. While we were off taking pictures after our ceremony, our family and friends enjoyed eating, drinking, and playing corn hole.

ELOPEMENTWEDDING/GLACIER

NATIONAL PARK Andrew and I share many of the same interests and personality traits and bring the best out in each other. We both love the outdoors and traveling and have tried so many new things. We have walked on sand, rocks, mountains, and snow. We swam in oceans, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. We have tried to face our fears together knowing we are there for each other, to lend a hand and/or hug in hard times, makes it all better. Montana, specifically Glacier National Park has always been on our bucket list to visit as we both love visiting a different national park each year. So we said, “why not get married in one?” After extensive research we decided to start planning an intimate wedding in Montana. We searched for the perfect spot in Glacier and found Marianne Wiest and then found Ryan’s Meadow. The day of our ceremony we had beautiful, sunny weather and the temperature could not have been any better. It was the perfect day to share the most gorgeous mountain view on Lake McDonald. I specifically remember all the emotions and memories walking down the wooded path. I was surrounded by trees while being escorted by my father as I got ready to marry my forever best friend. We had the most amazing officiant, musician, wedding planner, caterer, and of course photographer. The night ended with a beautiful set-up at our cabins with delicious barbecue food, s’mores around the bonfire, and plenty of other sweet treats. Our celebration eventually had to end but we were surrounded by our closest family and friends. On this unforgettable trip we shared many lifelong memories, had bonfires, and even convinced our big city family and friends to experience hiking with us. It was a true Montana experience and we would not have changed a thing about our special day. Compared to every other wedding that we’ve ever been to our wedding was very relaxed. Our awesome vendors helped make our day stress-free and we just went with the flow. Having never been to Montana or met any of our vendors in person was a little stressful at first but once the day started things quickly fell into place. Some think just because it’s a small wedding you don’t need a wedding planner, but because we live on the East Coast this was so crucial in making our big day a success.

Laila and I met when we were teenagers in high school through mutual friends. We knew we had a connection and started dating soon after. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love. It’s hard to define our love story because with true love, there is no definition or explanation. When you find your soul mate the process of falling in love is almost like your companion becomes part of you. I guess that’s why they call them your second half. And that’s what we knew we had.

mymontanawedding.com 81 REAL WEDDING / KALISPELL

Our wedding was unique because most of our vendors were family and friends. Our very close family friend became an ordained minister just so he could marry us, Laila’s grandmother performed the unity candle ceremony, our close family friend took our beautiful photos, and another created our delicious deserts. Our wedding definitely was specific to us because we really made it fit our lifestyle. We are very outdoorsy Montanans and love where we live. We got married right on the flathead river, with the Rocky Mountains in the back ground, we even had elk sheds on our arch way which Colten’s two older brothers had on their arch way before him. Give yourself as much time as possible and try not doing everything on your own. Accept all the help you can get. Have fun and don’t stress.

84 MY MONTANA WEDDING

Josh and I met in college at Montana Tech in Butte and started dating during graduate school in the spring of 2017. We had been best friends for awhile and decided to see if we could work as a couple (which ended up working very well)! We fell in love slowly but quickly at the same time. Our relationship was based on a strong foundation of friendship. We loved a lot of the same things but we were also opposite in a lot of ways which challenged us. We love to adventure and try new things. We have a mutual love of chips & salsa and margaritas. After college we tried distance, him moving to New Jersey and me moving to Florida. Being apart only made us stronger and we had so much fun exploring NYC and Disney World together. Eventually I moved up to New Jersey to be with him and work in New York. New opportunities were presented to us that allowed us to move back to Montana, the place where we both grew up and knew as “home.” Within a year we moved back, had our dream wedding at Snowline Acres and bought our first home together! From the beginning, Josh and I wanted our wedding to reflect who we were as a couple as much as possible. Some key things that are important to us include family & friends, good drinks and a good time, making memories, and most importantly desserts! These were the focus when planning our wedding. We honored our loved ones who had passed by displaying pictures and using heirlooms that once belonged to them as part of our decor. We picked “his and her” drinks based on each of our favorites. We had a band that is from Josh’s hometown and they play the best music for every generation, which really brought the dancing crowd! We had cake, cookies and an ice cream bar with Montana made ice cream to represent our love for sweets! Guests loved the variety. Copper was our accent color, representing Butte, MT where we met. The venue was located in an area where my parents grew up and I spent a lot of time visiting. Bringing Josh to the valley and sharing all of my favorite things with him was a huge part of our relationship. The advice I would give to other brides planning their Montana wedding would be to enjoy every second of the process. Enjoy planning all of the details big or small and have fun. Time goes by way too fast to stress and everything will come together beautifully. Not everything is going to turn out how you may have envisioned it but it will be perfect!

mymontanawedding.com 89 REAL WEDDING / WEST GLACIER

Like all good millenials, we met online. We met in late 2019 in Washington D.C. and had a bit of a whirlwind romance (I met his parents on our fifth date.) We loved being silly together, trying new restaurants, going fruit picking, and traveling. And then COVID hit. We moved in together and spent every moment together for over a year. The pandemic gave our relationship a sort of trial by fire and we got engaged after being together for a little over a year. Then we embarked on our next grand adventure temporarily relocating to a teeny tiny town— Hamilton, MT—for my job. We drove across the country (still in the middle of the pandemic.) We chose to take advantage of the beautiful scenery in Montana and got married outside of Glacier National Park. As scientists we were very conscious of the risks posed by getting married in the middle of a global pandemic. So we chose to keep the wedding very small and intimate, inviting only our immediate families. Because of the small size we were able to have a destination wedding near one of the most beautiful national parks in the country, Glacier National Park. To honor our family history, I wore several family heirlooms including my late grandmother’s antique watch and Mike’s late grandmother’s engagement ring. Since our pictures required us to do some trekking through the wilderness, I forewent the traditional heels opting for sparkly Keds instead which fit the overall whimsical theme of our wedding. Our wedding colors were a combination of our favorite colors, blue and green. There were several other details that made our wedding uniquely us, including personalized wine and beer glasses. The ceremony itself was short and sweet which gave us more time to celebrate with our loved ones. Our wedding cake, made by Miss Patti Cakes, was the absolute star of the night. We are still talking about it almost a year later! We ended the night by dancing under the stars. It was an absolutely perfect night.

Beware of fire season! We were very lucky that the smoke cleared out the day of our wedding but it would have been much less pleasant if the smoke had stuck around. Get a wedding planner! It is worth every penny. I did not have a single ounce of stress planning our wedding. We did not have to worry about vetting caterers or coordinating day-of activities or hiring an officiant. We just showed up and had fun. I truly cannot recommend hiring a wedding planner enough.
