Christopher Hodges - Being Human

Christopher Hodges Being Human 6 - 27 October, 2018

Being Human What is it about certain images that attract us, that catch our eye, that thrill us, perplex us and challenge us? These questions can describe our reaction to abstract art. In this latest body of work Hodges has produced paintings that continue his exploration of geometry and precision in paint. It will be his first exhibition in many years that focuses solely on painting. The seeming simplicity of these works is belied by the complexity of the brush marks and the subtlety of his choice of colour. In recent years Hodges’ focus has returned to the painted picture plane. His interest in hard edge abstraction is apparent in the straight lines and solid geometric shapes which comprise his works. What differentiates Hodges paintings are the soft shimmering surfaces made from a myriad of delicate, fluid brush marks that delightfully contrast the hard lines and forms. FB. 2018 “The concentric circle or concentric square go across hundreds of nationalities and cultures, from prehistoric to the present. Abstract painters constantly are dividing canvases in halves, or dividing them using a Fibonacci series, or doing all those little things that are a bit mathematical, a bit painterly, a bit gestural, and there’s some with more or less of the human touch than others. Therefore, ‘being human’ is the fact that you could encounter something new - it could be a primitive sculpture or it could be a modern painting - but there is something that makes you go “Bingo, I’ve got it!”, you have an instant definitive understanding of something about it.” CH. 2018
