Celebrating Forty Years of Papunya Tula Artists
Over the past forty-one years the Papunya Tula Artists have spearheaded the emergence of Aboriginal art, from the tribal to the contemporary. In 1971, when painting began at Papunya, no one could envisage the significance this movement would have for Australian art. In 1972, when the company was founded, no one would have anticipated it would still be prospering forty years on. However, this artist-owned company, directed by its shareholders, has not only nurtured multiple generations of talent, but has also made a positive contribution to its whole community. In keeping with the spirit of Papunya Tula Artists over all of these years, this exhibition focuses on the artists that are working today in communities across the Western Desert – particularly at Kiwirrkura and Kintore. Some of these artists were there in 1971 when it all began, but many have been born since. Some of these artists are already well known to the art-lovers of the big cities, while others are just starting out. All of these artists are proud members of their community and proud of the company that has played such a significant role in Australian art in the forty years since its inception.
