Community V Papunya Tula Artists

It is fitting that we end 2013 with a show of the latest work from the Papunya Tula Artists’ extended community. When we began this gallery twenty-five years ago, Papunya Tula was one of the foundation groups that forged our philosophy of indigenous and non-indigenous art, shown side by side and on equal terms, always. Twenty-five years ago this was a radical idea. Today, indigenous art is recognised as an integral part of Australian culture. More and more, indigenous artists are exhibited in the context of national, and international, contemporary art. This exhibition seeks to show the continued vitality of the Papunya Tula Artists by focusing on the present, on the artists working today – from the most senior to those just starting out in the art world. This exhibition is our way of celebrating the great contribution that Papunya Tula Artists have made to their community and acknowledging the continuing visual power of the artists’ works. Having represented this community for twenty-five years, I have been able to witness an art movement evolve. The artists painting today never fail to surprise and impress me. Within this long tradition of artmaking and strong community, indivudals continue to innovate and explore their own unique vision. Christopher Hodges, 2013
