FIELD NOTES 30 July – 1 August 2021

WELCOME

A huge welcome back stargazers. We are so happy to see your smiling faces again, you have been sorely missed. We are so excited to be able to open up our grassy doors and get you back together where you belong… here, Underneath the Stars. It would be an understatement to say the past 18 months have been a challenge for us all. Our 2020 #stayhomefest last year was a huge success thanks to you, but a festival is at its heart a gathering, a celebration of a community who share a passion and we are hugely grateful to you all for trusting us by taking the first steps back to live performance. This is a unique year with a lot of changes. We ask that you please follow all the guidance given and play by the (new) rules that we have put in place, be patient and help us to keep each other safe. We would like to show our appreciation to Mr Bob Barr, and the Cinderhill Farm family and Mr Horsfield for allowing us to return to this stunning site. Simply thank you. We have squeezed a lot of decision making into the last few months and their patience throughout has been hugley admirable. Let’s look after their land and impress the cows that will swiftly return to these fields on our exit. Talking about patience, this is the time to mention our wonderfully dedicated volunteers. Thank you all for giving us the time to plan the schedules, to work up the rotas and for your understanding that this year will be different. Your care and generosity always goes above and beyond anything we can imagine. We look forward to seeing you all, our incredible Star Helpers.

A big thank you to all our staff who help make the festival happen; the build team led by Glyn, Andy and the campsite squad, our volunteer chief Sally. Thank you to our design team, Cerys and Glyn and the ‘Decor Dillies’, Moira and the whole accessibility team, Alison and the backstage crew, Light & Hoppy event bars. Huge appreciation to Celeste and Amanda for keeping our little nippers happily busy. Leila and Andy, we are so pleased you are back to keep us entertained, thank you. To everyone that helps make Underneath the Stars happen, we are indebted to you. Last, but certainly not least, to the people who have stood by us through a very tough year, to the audience who donated their tickets or so generously raised funds for the Festival, to the folk who have cheered us along throughout, there are no words to describe how much this has meant to us… how much it still means. You are the reason we are here to celebrate today. Thank you doesn’t seem to be enough, but we wholeheartedly mean it. So, let’s do this. It is going to be a truly moving weekend with plenty of emotion, but this is our time to celebrate with the people we love. Welcome back stargazers… UTSf xx

UnderneatH THE stars

Things will look a little different this year... We have worked our little socks off to adapt and enhance our festival site so that you can access all areas in the safest way possible. At the time of writing we aren’t entirely sure what will be allowed by the time the Festival comes round but we’ll keep up to date with the guidance and adjust things on site if we can.

One stage and 2 big screens

1 Stage

Yep! We really are Underneath the Stars this year with one outdoor stage and 2 mahooosive screens. A much more spacious approach where we can stretch out and give our fellow stargazers a bit of room to be able to breathe in the summery fresh air.

REPECT

Be Kind

2 Screens

EACH OTHER

If someone wants a little more space, give them room. Respect each other and keep your distance. Protect each other and show you care.

Wash and sanitise your hands regularly We have added hand sanitising stations throughout our site. Please use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day. If you find that any station is empty, please do give us a shout and we will be right there to fill it back up.

One-way systems ONE WAY

4

You know we love our signs here at UTSf. Well, these ones are the really important ones, so please do follow any directional signs for specific entry and exit points and one-way systems around the site.

Wear your fanciest mask There will be areas where we may need to ask you to wear a mask. But this is your opportunity to wear your fanciest one and stand out! We will be wearing ours too. Go on and make us smile!

Take heed of our announcements We will be making little announcements every now and again, whether this be through our wonderful MC’s, or on the big screens. Please take note of these. They could be about staggered exits after performances, or adjusted routes that need to be followed.

Queuing 2m ------

While queuing anywhere on the site, please maintain a social distance from your fellow festival-goers. This may make queues look longer - but remember good things come to stargazers who wait!

What to do if you have covid symptoms If during the festival you experience any symptoms of Covid-19: • High temperature • A new, continuous cough • A loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste

You need to: 1. Isolate immediately 2. Leave site as soon as you can 3. Contact the festival organisers 4. Request an NHS Covid-19 Test online or by phoning 119

Please be aware that a sudden or unexplained headache, sore throat and runny nose, might also be a symptom of Covid-19.

Keeping everyone safe is our primary concern; our festival family, everyone working on the event and the surrounding community. We all have a part to play this weekend.

Enjoy yourselves and stay safe. 5

FRIDAY LAUREN HOUSLEY Lauren Housley is an Americana-tinged singer and songwriter, from Yorkshire; a young woman with a deep connection to great songs, the craft of storytelling and a powerhouse and emotive voice. Lauren independently released her first two albums, Sweet Surrender in 2015 and The Beauty of This Life in 2017, quickly garnering acclaim from fans, critics and fellow musicians. Her latest album, released in April, is aptly titled Girl From the North. Friday 1.30pm

6

NICK HART Nick Hart is a folk singer deeply rooted in the English tradition. Described as “The real deal” by Mike Harding. His desire to preserve the nuances of traditional singing informs his minimal approach to accompaniment, and his songs are delivered with a great emphasis on storytelling. His repertoire of songs, drawn largely from his native East Anglia, reflect his understanding of both the depth and breadth of material within the English tradition. He is fast acquiring a reputation as an engaging and entertaining performer. Friday 2.50pm

7

BRYDE Bryde, or Sarah Howells to her friends, grew up in the Welsh seaside town of Milford Haven, and plunged straight into the world of music the moment she hit double-digits. Bryde’s debut album Like An Island was nominated for the Welsh Music Prize. Bryde is a girl and an electric guitar, playing fierce, fragile and euphoric songs. Swaying from vulnerable to glorious within one verse and chorus, Bryde’s music is honest and authentic. Friday 4.10pm

FAMILY FOLKTUNES Join Kate and Sally's traditional Friday show for a special one-off All-Under-Stars Special of Family Folktunes. It's the Rusbys with team captain Kate versus the O'Kanes captained by none other than Mr Damien O'Kane, with your host Sally Shistle. Who will be victorious? Will it be more like an episode of Mr and Mrs or George and Mildred? Who knows... does it matter? It'll be an hour of fun and chaos either way! Let the competition begin! [Warning: may include banjos] Friday 5.35pm

WATCH KATE ON SUNDAY AT 8.05PM

DALLAHAN Dallahan are a distinct force in the international folk music scene. Forged in Scotland’s traditional music community, but drawing on the traditional music styles of the Balkans and North America, they create an original and seamless musical montage. Dallahan traverse styles and countries, creating their own unique brand of world-folk delivered with stunning virtuosity. They have a plethora of awards and nominations under their belt, including nominations for Album of the Year and Folk Band of The Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards. Friday 7.05pm 9

EDDI READER Eddi Reader is one of Scotland’s greatest living female voices and would have celebrated her 40th year of touring in 2020. She has won Brit Awards, been awarded four honorary degrees, an MBE, sung to millions on some of the world’s greatest stages and collaborated with stars across a myriad of genres including folk, jazz, pop, world, punk and even classical work with various orchestras. Her band Fairground Attraction had huge international success and a No 1 hit with Perfect and their debut album First of a Million Kisses stormed the charts in the late 1980’s. Throughout her successful solo career Eddi has released consistently great works and highly acclaimed albums. Friday 8.30pm

10

PAUL CARRACK The BBC documentary about Paul Carrack’s life and times was called The Man with the Golden Voice with good reason. Britain’s best blue-eyed soul singer has been the creator and interpreter of songs that are part of pop history. Sheffield born and touring since the age of 17, he sang How Long, the much-covered 1974 classic in his days with Ace, and was the voice of Tempted, in his tenure with Squeeze. Then came hits with Mike + the Mechanics, such as The Living Years and Over My Shoulder. His solo catalogue boasts much-loved songs such as Satisfy My Soul, Eyes Of Blue, Good Feelin’ About It and That’s All That Matters To Me. Love Will Keep Us Alive was covered by the Eagles and won an ASCAP Award as Song of the Year, and Carrack’s collaboration with Nick Lowe, Battlefield, was recorded by Diana Ross. As an in-demand team player on record and stage, his credits include The Smiths, Roxy Music, B.B. King, Eric Clapton and many more. Friday 10.15pm 11

SATURDAY CABLE STREET COLLECTIVE London-based seven-piece Cable Street Collective initially broke through onto the festival circuit in 2014, and have since built up a stellar reputation as a live band. Their sound mixes African-influenced guitars and beats with soulful female vocals, socially conscious lyrics and western melodies. In 2019 they received praise and radio play from the likes of BBC Radio 6Music, Radio X and Amazing Radio and have spent the last year writing new material and recording, readying themselves for the return of festivals. Saturday 11am

12

MIDNIGHT SKYRACER Midnight Skyracer are an Anglo-Irish, allfemale bluegrass quintet who have become festival sensations across the UK, Europe and Australasia, toured regularly at home and released a critically-lauded debut album. They also carry the distinction of being the first British act nominated for an award by the International Bluegrass Music Association. They are Leanne Thorose, (vocals, mandolin), Tabitha Benedict (vocals, banjo), Eleanor Wilkie (bass) Laura Carrivick (fiddle, dobro) and Charlotte Carrivick (guitar). Masters of their respective instruments, their vocal harmonies are second to none. Saturday 12.20pm

13

AN AUDIENCE WITH MARK RADCLIFFE In 2019 Mark Radcliffe celebrated forty years in radio having started out at Manchester station Piccadilly in 1979. He has gone on to work for BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 4 Extra, 5, 5 Live, 6 Music and the World Service. He is a regular presenter of music documentaries and festivals on television and is one of the long-standing anchors of the BBC’s coverage of Glastonbury. He is the author of five best-selling books the most recent being Crossroads. As a musician and songwriter he performs solo, with his electronic duo UNE and his acoustic trio Radcliffe, Russell and Lee. Saturday 1.40pm

14

DAMIEN O'KANE & FRIENDS No stranger to UTSf, Damien is a cracking collaborator, a resonant and superb singer, a master of all things with strings, most notably his virtuosic tenor banjo playing. His radical approach, sends traditional Irish songs reeling into a contemporary soundscape. The last decade has seen three solo albums, Summer Hill (2010), Areas of High Traffic (2015) and Avenging and Bright (2017). He’s an ingenious arranger, plus an accomplished tunemaker, researcher, bandleader and accompanist of rich imagination and fearless vision. 2018’s record Banjophony, with Ron Block, Alison Krauss’ banjo and guitar picker, is about as much fun as you can have with two banjos. Damien will be joined on stage by long time collaborators Anthony Davis and Steven Byrnes, plus members of his hugely talented family, Aidan, Sorcha, Peter and Feargal. Look out for a few surprises too. Saturday 3pm

MARTYN JOSEPH For one man and a guitar, Martyn Joseph creates a performance with a huge far-reaching sound that is energetic, compelling and passionate. Martyn is gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics and has a career spanning 30 years, 32 albums, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances. A raconteur weaving tales on topical concerns, as well as stories on the fragility of love, he has a magical ability to reach out to his listeners through his passion and humour. Saturday 4.20pm

15

CATRIN FINCH & SECKOU KEITA Leading Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese Kora virtuoso Seckou Keita’s live performances, have garnered 5* reviews from the Guardian and prompted Songlines Magazine to describe them as “…one of the most popular world music acts of the decade”. They create music that not only champions their exquisite instruments, but blends elements of new and old music from the Western Classical, Celtic and Senegalese song traditions; revealing a striking common thread between different cultures and times. Their achievements include Best Fusion Album in the Songlines Music Awards 2019, and a nomination Album of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2019, where Catrin and Seckou won Best Group/Duo and Seckou was named Musician of The Year. Saturday 5.45pm

16

BREABACH 2020 marked the 15th anniversary of Breabach, one of Scotland’s most exciting and successful folk groups. They have always looked to acknowledge and respect both the origins of the music they play, whilst embracing the future with new ideas, energy and belief. It is these key attributes, combined with hard work and talent, that has seen them develop into such a force, with a multitude of awards and touring across the world. Breabach are Megan Henderson (fiddle, vocals, step dance), James Lindsay (double bass, vocals), Calum MacCrimmon (bagpipes, whistle, bouzouki, vocals), Conal McDonagh (bagpipes, whistle, vocals) and Ewan Robertson (guitar, vocals, cajon). Their latest release is Dùsgadh an original film in collaboration with animator Cat Bruce. Saturday 7.10pm

17

HONEYFEET Festival favourites Honeyfeet have been dubbed folk-pop and barrelhouse-pop, both vague enough to make sense. They have spent the last decade tearing around festival stages and theatres, clubs and fields melting down blues and pop, jazz and disco, pushing air molecules around with instruments and making friends in the process. They’re fronted by the amazing Ríoghnach Connolly “a remarkable singer and flautist who...can ease from Irish traditional influences to soul”, The Guardian. Their most recent album was Orange Whip and Craig Charles, from the Funk & Soul Show on 6 Music is a great fan. Saturday 8.35pm

18

SAVING GRACE Saving Grace is a co-operative including Suzi Dian (vocals), Oli Jefferson (percussion), Tony Kelsey (mandolin, baritone, acoustic guitars), Robert Plant (vocals) and Matt Worley (banjo, acoustic, baritone guitars, cuatro). Saving Grace debuted in February 2019 with a gig near the border of England and Wales and they have since staged other shows, playing a repertoire described as being "inspired by the dreamscape of the Welsh Marches." These five musicians work in glorious harmony from start to finish reworking a selection of diverse cover versions, collected from various places creating a musical journey in its truest form. Their gigs have seen sensitive arrangements and dynamics produced when a talented cooperative congregate. Suzi Dian shares lead vocals with the legendary singer, executing a steady yet emotive crescendo and diminuendo in unity with Robert and the rest of the band. Robert eloquently delivers stories behind the choice of songs…tales of his accumulation of different musical styles, genres and techniques are evidence of his ingrained desire to explore world music. This is an odyssey undertaken in the spirit of appreciation, musicianship, and exultation. Saturday 10.15pm

19

SUNDAY JAYWALKERS Jaywalkers are three outstanding musicians who meld country heartbreak and bluegrass dynamism to issues of the modern day. They have developed a tight bond, demonstrated through their well-crafted, tasteful arrangements and ability to bounce ideas around the stage. The combination of powerhouse bass, flame-fingered mandolin, blistering fiddle and three-part harmony pack a great punch for an acoustic trio. Jaywalkers are a real melting pot of their collective inspirations and the influences of their musical upbringings. Sunday 11.15am

20

FERRIS & SYLVESTER Ferris & Sylvester are songwriters, their live sound a distinct combination of Americana, blues and rock n roll. With clear references in their catchy setup to the mid-60s sounds of Greenwich Village, combined with their meatier blues tones, the duo sit somewhere between Jack White and First Aid Kit. They won Emerging Artist of the Year at the UK Americana Awards 2020, whilst were also nominated for Song of the Year. They have been described as “Rage ridden brilliance” by BBC Introducing. Sunday 12.35pm

THE BAR-STEWARD SONS OF VAL DOONICAN Ey-up! What better way to celebrate Yorkshire Day than Barnsley’s finest tank-top troop, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican. Put on yer finest knitted gladrags, dust off yer flat cap, put on your dancing shoes and bring your finest singing voices, as we cordially invite you to the party. It’s gonna be proper champion! Scott, Björn and Alan have a talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with fair t’middlin’ comedy lyrics, on acoustic geetar, ukulele, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, accordion, keyboard, keytar and the world’s first synthesizer ukulele. Reet good. Sunday 3.25pm

LANTERNS ON THE LAKE Drawing on the folk influences of Neil Young and post-rock instrumental sounds, Lanterns on the Lake combine the brooding vocals of songwriter Hazel Wilde with textured instrumentation. Founded in Newcastle in 2008, rising socio-political tensions are reflected on Spook the Herd, their latest album. Its nine songs turn the microscope to issues including our hopelessly polarized politics, social media, addiction, grief and the climate crisis. Lanterns on the Lake are vocalist and guitarist Hazel Wilde, Paul Gregory (guitars, electronics), Oliver Ketteringham (drums) Angela Chan (strings) and Bob Allan (bass). Sunday 4.50pm

23

LYR Land Yacht Regatta (or LYR for short) are a genre-splicing supergroup of sorts, comprised of author and current British poet laureate Simon Armitage, musician Richard Walters and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Pearson. The origins of LYR stretch back to 2009 when Walters, a big fan of Armitage’s work, approached the poet’s publisher about the possibility of collaboration. The band’s debut album Call In The Crash Team, is a midpoint between poetic spoken passages, soaring vocal melodies, and instrumentation which gleams like a rough-cut jewel. Breaking barriers and building unexpected bridges between different worlds is embedded in the core of LYR. Sunday 6.20pm 24

KATE RUSBY Fortunately we’ve had Kate Rusby to keep out spirits high since we were last Underneath the Stars. At the start of the first lockdown, fuelled by a strong desire to keep everyone cheerful, Kate embarked on what was to become 22 free Singy-Songy sessions from her home, accompanied by her husband Damien O’Kane, having a laugh and often joined by her daughters and dogs. She also followed up on another idea which started life a few years ago whilst she was rehearsing for the Jo Whiley Show on BBC Radio 2. Jo asks her live music guests to perform songs of their own plus a cover version. Kate says, “I realised over time that it’s not only traditional songs that are handed down through the generations, popular songs are as well. Especially feel good songs and tunes from childhood TV shows. Songs are precious for many different reasons. I decided, “Right, that’s it! I am doing a whole album of covers.” Recording and home schooling worked out rather well as Hand Me Down has gone onto become one of Kate’s biggest selling records, reaching No 7 in the UK albums charts, with the single Manic Monday becoming a huge hit at Radio 2. Thank you Kate for bringing some smiles through these dark times. Sunday 8.05pm

25

ADMIRAL FALLOW Admiral Fallow comprise Louis Abbott, Kevin Brolly, Phil Hague, Sarah Hayes and Joe Rattray. They released their much beloved debut album, Boots Met My Face, in 2011 and its widely acclaimed successor, Tree Bursts In Snow, the following year, with Tiny Rewards in 2015. Over their 14 years together, they have toured the world and individual members are in demand performing with renowned artists such as Kris Drever, Emma Pollock, Field Music, King Creosote and Karine Polwart. 2019 saw them back in the studio and they now make a triumphant return with a brace of new songs alongside beautifully diverse favourites from the past. LIVER COTTAGE

L’HOTEL

Live cooking ‘Al Tesco’! Blurring the boundaries between fresh and best before June 1972, the Liver Cottage chefs stick to their motto, “Don’t leave anyone wanting more!” Comedy chefs Hugh Fearn and Lee Whittingstall present a cookery demonstration like no other. They create fusion food, blending home grown ingredients with food foraged from the corner shop, the streets and of course the audience. Their signature dish, pan fried pizza crusts with medallions of air dried chewing gum, has been hailed by the critics as “groundbreaking”, “audacious” and “chewy”.

L’ Hotel has parked at its latest destination… The only hotel to come to you! The smallest hotel in the world is shrouded but watch as it comes alive: beds are made, tables laid, chamber maids roused, bell boys leap into action and finally the special guests arrive and are ushered up the red carpet to their luxury accommodation. Watch amazed as this charming, eccentric, tiny venue erupts into glittering cabaret, dances into dream filled slumber and wakes to clattering kitchen choreography. Acrobatics, globe walking, dead celebrities, French finesse, trumpeting and mime mayhem make this an enchanting show to delight an audience of any age or nationality.

EMMA’S CRAFTY KIDS The Emma’s Crafty Kids team are really excited to be back at Underneath The Stars. To keep everyone safe, things will be a little bit different this year. Each workshop will have allocated workshop spaces with individual materials and equipment for each young person and their supervising adult (very important that there is an adult to supervise please). They are also cleaning equipment in between every workshop, so please bear with them whilst they make the marquee as safe as possible for you. Friday, Saturday & Sunday

Emma' Crafty Kids have planned their workshops to be socially distanced with reduced numbers this means that spaces are limited. Friday, will be operating on a first come, first served basis whilst everyone is still arriving on site. Saturday and Sunday, please go to the marquee in the Bonnie Bairns area to book your morning workshop space between 8.30 – 9am and your afternoon workshop space between 1 – 1.30pm.

Please note that some of the daily workshops are only suitable for young people aged over 12 years and adults. Things may change from the scheduled programme, so please check the notice board outside our marquee. We look forward to seeing your crafty works of art stargazers!

BONNIE BAIRNS AREA As always, tucked away in a special corner of our site, we’ve got a whole host of things happening for the most inquisitive, creative and playful Bonnie Bairns. Things may be a little different this year, but we’re sure the amazing wee nippers will make it as fabulous and as fun as they always do.

SUN TENT

MOON TENT

We have all kinds of craft activities all day long, run by our amazing Star Helpers. Please look at the timetables for ideas of what we do. This year we’ll also have ‘grab bag crafts’! What’s this you ask?! Well, if the Bonnie Bairns area feels too busy, you can take a bag of materials away to get crafty while watching the music, then return them later and collect more. We can’t guarantee your Bonnie Bairns will stay clean, but they will have fun.

Our Moon tent is a (mostly) calm area tucked away from the noise and activity of most of the Festival. Families can relax for a while before going back to the music, hustle and bustle. We have toys to play with, colouring in for all ages, outdoor games and other fun items kindly provided by Cawthorne Toddler Group. We also have singing activities for our littlest Bonnie Bairns with Amanda Cheetham of Rhythm and Rhyme. Please check the timetable for timings, numbers may be restricted depending on current guidelines and sign-ups may be required.

BUMS AND BOOBS TENT A serene, discrete and distraction free space for baby feeding should you require it. We also have baby changing facilities including mats, wipes, potties etc. Just outside we have a dedicated, and frequently cleaned, children’s toilet.

Please remember children must be accompanied by an adult in all activities on site at all times. We hope that the adults will join in the fun too!

She will be your friend and loves a snuggle, you will find her where you can learn to juggle. Tomaz is an alien who likes his food, he loves to eat anything barbequed. He’s vegetarian, so doesn’t have meat, you will find him where you go to eat. Andrew is an alien who loves to read, he can pick up a book and read with great speed. Easy and hard words, he has no worries, you will find him where you listen to stories.

42

Ramia is an alien who like to spend money, she likes dark blue and things that are fluffy. She chooses clothes with her many eyes, you will find her in the tent with merchandise. Stella is an alien who loves the water, she splashes around like a playful otter. When she gets thirsty, she will never flap, she will find the closest water tap.

Barnsley’s Fantastical

Beasts

Look out…the beasts are coming to Underneath the Stars! We are delighted to welcome five amazing willow artworks based on tales and legends from our local and surrounding areas. The giant sculptures of an elephant, kestrel, big cat, bear and gryphon have been produced by leading willow artists from across Yorkshire and the North of England.

at U n d e r n eath

The sculptures were originally commissioned by Barnsley Council’s Arts and Events team for their Twisted: Barnsley’s Fantastical Beasts trail in the town centre earlier this year. Go and visit Elsecar Heritage Centre and Wentworth Woodworth from 5 August to 5 September to see all nine beast sculptures spread across two stunning sites.
