WELCOME TO UNDERNEATH THE STARS FESTIVAL Welcome to our new site in this beautiful little corner of Cawthorne village. We’re delighted you could join us, whether you are Underneath the Stars veterans, or brand new festival adventurers. Our lovely event wouldn’t be able to happen without some extremely dedicated, generous and hard working people and we’d would like to make special mention to a few of them here, to thank them for their time and effort. Firstly a massive thanks to Mr Bob Barr and his awesome family; Joth & Sue, Robert & Margaret, Fiona, Alex, Billy and Georgina for allowing us all to share (gatecrash) their idyllic farm land. It is a huge undertaking and disruption to a hard working farm team and we are greatly indebted to them. That said - please please help us look after this amazing land and keep it in brilliant condition. Use the bins provided, respect your fellow festival revellers, our festival staff and volunteers and any farm or wild animals you may come across in your travels. We would like to make special mention of Byron French at French Plant Hire and Groundworks for helping to prepare the site and lay new roadways, and also Naylor Industries based here in Cawthorne for supplying us with drainage pipes we needed to improve the land and create new gateways around site.

" FESTUNDERSTARS ! UNDERNEATHTHESTARSFESTIVAL

And what about our incredible Star Helpers this year? Once again headed up by the unstoppable Sue and Sally, thank-you all for being amazing! Big love once again to; Glynn and all the site build team, Alison and the backstage wonders, Eddie at Splendid Events, our onstage technical crew with Isophase Audio and Open White Lighting, Andy Smith and the campsite possé, Joy at Pure Records, as well as Callum at All in Access. Thanks a million once again to Emma, Celeste and all the family events team in Bonnie Bairns area, also the extremely important bar staff and team from Light & Hoppy event bars, the Arley Medical staff, Steve and the ESP security clan, Leila and Jack our festival MCs, toilet and shower crews, Paul and all the folks at Silkstone Scout Group for feeding our morning bellies and keeping our site spotless all weekend. And of course, thanks a million to YOU, for dragging your tents and air-beds out of storage and hitting the road to Barnsley for a lovely fun time in a field. We couldn’t and wouldn’t want to do it without you all. Take care of each other out there under the stars - the festival team.

FRIDAY

I SEE RIVERS Originally hailing from Norway, I See Rivers are three talented women set to enchant you with their memorable melodies and distinctly nontraditional vocal harmonies. A style that they’ve dubbed ‘float folk’, their pin-sharp vocals are set to a minimal acoustic backdrop and they bring to mind artists such as Fleet Foxes, Sufjan Stevens, Feist and are a must see for any fans of First Aid Kit or The Staves. JACK HARRIS

PITOU

Jack Harris is a Welsh-born folk singer-songwriter, musician, and poet. He is multi-awardwinning, most notably being the first non-American to win the prestigious New Folk Songwriting Competition at Kerrville Folk Festival, whose previous winners include Gillian Welch, Devon Sproule and Anais Mitchell. Harris’ songs take a compassionate look at things both common and uncommon, and see them differently. They are literate, curious songs, often in character, always intriguing. His latest album, ‘The Wide Afternoon’, assembles eleven new songs, rooted in folk and blues traditions, telling real and imagined stories.

The music of Amsterdam-born musician Pitou is characterised by her highly distinctive voice, unique compositions and the use of vocal harmonies as an instrument in themselves, drawing inspiration from sources ranging from Bulgarian choir music to Sparklehorse and Joni Mitchell. Her highly anticipated self-titled debut EP was released last year on Scottish/Dutch label Mink Records. “Pitou crafts intelligent folk-pop that balances the darkness and light of human emotion” The Independent FRIDAY3.40PM LITTLE LIGHTS STAGE

KATE & SAL’S YARN

GRACE PETRIE

Back by popular demand for a second instalment. Spend an hour or so listening to the ramblings, reminiscences and laughs of Kate Rusby in conversation with pal of 40+ years Sally Smith (they don't look that old!). Expect some songs and performances, little historical gems, top Ruzzer facts and the odd surprise.

Grace Petrie’s unique take on life, love and politics, and the warmth and wit with which they are delivered, have won over an army of loyal fans across the alternative, folk, political and comedy scenes. She has toured with Emmy the Great and Billy Bragg, supported comedians Robin Ince and Josie Long, and collaborated with some of the most respected names in folk including Leon Rosselson, Roy Bailey and Peggy Seeger. Her self-released album ‘Heart First Aid Kit’ received a top 10 album of 2017 placing from Mojo magazine. We can't wait to give her a big stargazer welcome to UTSf2018.

ESTBEL Estbel is a rare line-up of two nightingales from Estonia and two Flemish brothers from Belgium. The band came into existence after the exciting rehearsal week on the Estonian island of Saaremaa in February 2016. Their seven-day stay was an intense experience in a beautiful and inspiring environment. ‘Saar’ means ‘island’ in Estonian and in many ways felt like a very suitable title for the debut album released during the Tallinn Music Week 2017. STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES Steve Earle has been equally acclaimed as a folk troubadour, a rockabilly raver, a contemplative bluesman, a honky-tonk rounder, a snarling rocker and even a bluegrass practitioner. This definitive Americana artist has won three Grammy Awards, as well as being an acclaimed author, actor and longtime social and political activist. His latest album, 'So You Wannabe an Outlaw', in homage to outlaw country and dedicated to Waylon Jennings, ranges from gentle, acoustic folk ballads to his pile-driving, country-rock roots. It also includes a touching farewell to his mentor, Guy Clark, who passed away last year. Steve is backed on the album and appears here at UTSf18 with long time classic band The Dukes. MELROSE QUARTET

ANDY KERSHAW

Melrose Quartet is an outstanding Sheffield-based ensemble of internationally renowned singers, instrumentalists and writers. BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Nancy Kerr, is well-loved for her appearances with The Sweet Visitor Band, Martin Simpson, The Full English and the acclaimed duo with her husband James Fagan. James is a bouzouki wizard, multi-instrumentalist and singer of traditional and contemporary songs especially from his native Australia. Jess and Richard Arrowsmith are two traditional musical maestros well respected on the English folk scene for their powerful vocals, subtle accompaniments, lively tunes and a broad knowledge of material.

A legendary broadcast and foreign correspondent, Andy’s one-man show, The Adventures of Andy Kershaw, has become a hugely successful highlight of many literary festivals and a popular draw at theatres and arts centres around the UK. Fascinating and often hilarious, the audio-visual presentation treats the audience to recollections from a life spent on the front lines of rock & roll, and on the front lines of some of the world’s most extreme and dangerous countries. “The finest British broadcaster bar none” Stephen Fry SATURDAY 2.20PM PLANETS STAGE

MARTHA TILSTON Martha’s vibrant upbringing was both musical and artistic. Her singer-songwriter father Steve Tilston and folk singer stepmother Maggie Boyle influenced her musical ear. She would often find legendary musicians like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn gathered and singing in the family kitchen. It was perhaps no wonder that all these textures fed into her creativity and emergence of Martha as a powerful songstress in her own right. With her beautiful crystal clear vocals, Martha’s musical arrangements range from the pinhead intimacy of acoustic guitar and voice to the expansive electric, slide guitar, rolling beats, deep bass, banjo, string arrangements and sometimes touches of electronica.

They meld heart wrenching songs and dance of the Asturian countryside with the bluesy grit of the Gretsch guitar. L-R comprise Leticia González on vocals and Asturian percusssion (tambourine and castanets) and Rubén Bada on electric guitars and bouzouki.

To her it is a crucial means to express and come to terms with intense feelings of loss and sadness from seeing her people suffer and country destroyed. Drawing on her strong roots in the rich creative tradition of the Scottish Borders, she has become a leading interpreter of Scottish folk music and Scots song and her skills as a performer, composer, researcher and educator are widely recognised. Her performance, composition and songwriting can be heard with award-winning groups Boreas, Watson/Black, Rule Of Three and Fireside Music Company (with Dr Margaret Bennett). Her most recent album ‘Yarrow: Acoustic Collective’ was named album of the month this February in The Guardian.

Yves Lambert is regarded as one of the most influential and legendary players in Quebec’s traditional roots music scene. Lambert, who fronts the trio on lead vocals, diatonic button accordions, harmonica, jaw harp, and percussion, was one of the founding members of traditional French Canadian folk group La Bottine Souriante in 1976. Those who haven’t had the opportunity to discover Lambert during his 40-year musical career will undoubtedly soon fall for his charisma and talent. Rounding off the Yves Lambert Trio is the virtuosity and passion of Tommy Gauthier and Olivier Rondeau. By reviving undiscovered songs and adding their own energy, the group is sure to bring new fans to this infectious music, continuing a tradition Lambert began many years ago.

KATE RUSBY Kate Rusby holds a special place in the hearts of UTSf. As many of you will know, the festival is named after one of her most famous songs and put together by the family production team that runs her record company and supports her live work. We each have our own reasons why Kate and her music touches us and has seen her become one of the most famous and best selling English female artists of recent years, one who has stayed true to her love of folk and its traditions, whilst winning mainstream appeal over a career spanning more than 25 years.

24

For some it is her distinct and beautiful voice, for others her unique and moving songwriting and interpretation of traditional song, or maybe it is her easygoing and girl-next-door charm and sense of humour. Kate’s won awards galore from the BBC, honorary doctorates from Huddersfield and Sheffield Hallam Universities, and even been given the prestigious Freeman of the Borough Barnsley which we know she holds dear to her heart. One of her latest adventures was being asked to write the music for the grand opening ceremony of the Great Exhibition of the North and is musical accompaniment to a water sculpture installed on the river Tyne which runs from the 22 June until the 9 September.
