FESTIVAL 2022

FIELD NOTES

29 – 31 JULY 2022

WELCOME

A cosmic welcome back stargazers to Underneath the Stars 2022! Can you believe that this is our 8th festival? Seems like only yesterday we were having a chat in our kitchen (a rather different festival HQ at the time) and someone decided that creating our own festival would be fun. 8 years on, a few more grey hairs, some bitten nails, a couple of *cough* sleepless nights and look at what this adventure has blossomed into. The support you have given us over the years is truly unbelievable and you are the reason we are here today, thank you. This weekend has a really exciting line up full of diversity and for the first time, we have three female headliners taking to the stage! The amazing rolling programme of music and arts will fill our snug little corner of Barnsley with wonderful sound, sights and culture. A massive thank you to Mr Bob Barr and the Cinderhill Farm Family, alongside Mr Horsfield for allowing us to return to this gorgeous site. We always look forward to the very first moment we step onto the land to start building UTSf and are so sad when it is all over. It is definitely an office with a view! Thank you once again to our wonderful star helpers. Each and every one of you make this festival work like clockwork. You all make the festival shine so brightly.

To everyone on the build, volunteer, campsite, accessibility, box office and backstage teams and anyone else who works tirelessly behind the scenes, thank you. We know how hard you work to make all of the magic happen and cannot express how much we appreciate all your efforts. Thank you to our MCs, Andy and Leila (Leila is back! Woo hoo!) who will be taking us through the weekend with sheer joy. Finally, thank you to you for joining us for 2022. It is going to be an unforgettable weekend. So without further ado, let’s get this stellar party started… Have fun, keep each other safe, be happy - UTSf

FRIDAY THIS IS THE KIT This Is The Kit, is the musical project of Kate Stables, who are becoming one of the country’s most revered musical endeavours. In early spring of 2020, just before everything got weird, Kate and her band of trusty companions, Rozi Plain, Jamie Whitby-Coles, Jesse D Vernon, and Neil Smith, knuckled down to record what would become This is The Kit’s fifth album Off Off On. It was released in October 2020 to huge acclaim with Uncut calling it the bands “most multi-layered yet subtle work so far” and the Independent naming them “One of the most original and musically gifted artists of today”. It shows Kate to be a songwriter overflowing with ideas, ably crafting music of great beauty, of wonder and illumination. Friday 6.45pm Planets Stage

Their musical journey has taken them to London, Berlin and Madrid. Overcoming obstacles at many points in their careers, hardwork, resilience, endless tours and an enduring commitment to the goal of being global citizens, who can and will share their journey and music without borders, has driven them on. They have slowly crafted a distinct sound of feel good music wrapped in rhythmic soul, with meaning and sincerity at its core. From grassroots to massive capacity venues, local and national festivals, Stone Jets has unmatched experience and sweat equity to spare. Friday 1.40pm Little Lights Stage

SAM KELLY & THE LOST BOYS With a reputation as one of the best live acts on the UK folk scene, The Lost Boys is the brainchild of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Sam Kelly. Joining Sam are the virtuosic talents of Jamie Francis (banjo), Graham Coe (cello), Toby Shaer (whistles, fiddle), Archie Moss (melodeon) and Evan Carson (drums). THE TRIALS OF CATO

BILLIE MARTEN

The rise of award winning trio The Trials of Cato on the folk scene, has been the subject of massive critical attention. They pay clear homage to the tradition whilst twisting old bones into something febrile and modern, with stomping tunes and captivating stories. Formed in Beirut, they have performed tirelessly up and down the UK and their debut album, Hide and Hair, won Best Album at the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. They have since been joined by multi-talented instrumentalist and singer Polly Bolton. Their hotly anticipated second album is titled Gog Magog, named both after the mythical giant of Arthurian legend and the Cambridgeshire hilltop, where the new album was born over lockdown.

Billie Marten grew up on Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading, Kate Bush, and Chris Wood, in Ripon, North Yorkshire. Signed to Sony, the day before her Maths GCSE, not long afterwards, she was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2016. Her critically acclaimed debut album, Writing of Blues and Yellows, was an open-hearted collection of quietly beautiful songs, released when she was just 17. Her 2019 follow-up, Feeding Seahorses By Hand, was declared by The Line of Best Fit as a "gentle and reserved masterpiece". Her most recent, Flora Fauna, is a confident and full-chested album that sheds the timidity of previous work in favour of a more urgent sound. Her minimalist acoustic folk has matured and is now fostered around bass, rhythm and rich instrumentation.

DAVINA AND THE VAGABONDS Listening to Davina and the Vagabonds is like stepping into a wondrous musical time machine, bringing you 100 years of American music plus originals. They have the panache and superlative musicianship to recreate the retro sound and ageless appeal of golden age Americana. They’re renowned for their high-energy live shows, sharp-dressed professionalism and Davina's commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, their shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments and tender gospel passages. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Davina is a true original. Friday 10.25pm Little Lights Stage 7

IMELDA MAY Imelda May is one of Ireland’s most celebrated female artists, a poet, actress, TV presenter and Women’s Right Activist. Globally revered for her enigmatic live shows, she has sold millions of records. Her album Love Tattoo, is the best-selling album of all time by a home-grown female artist in Ireland and her recent album, 11 Past the Hour, marks her fourth No 1 album in Ireland and fourth Top 10 in the UK. Imelda’s recent work is a departure from her early rockabilly style, spanning blues, rock, soul, gospel and jazz. Imelda had performed with artists including Lou Reed, Bono, Tom Jones and Van Morrison, in front of royalty and politicians like Obama, at the Grammys and ahead of the Mayweather/McGregor fight in 2017 to a reported TV audience of 1 billion people. Friday 9pm Planets Stage 8

THIS IS YOUR LIFE-ISH THINGY Kate Rusby and host Sally Shistle are back in their regular Friday teatime slot. 2022 is special for Kate as it marks Kate’s 30th year in the music business as a professional musician, so we couldn’t let that pass without a chat and a delve into the past to find out how it all started and indeed, how on earth did it get to 30? Kate’s chatting, Sal’s asking the questions…what could possibly go wrong? Friday 4.40pm Planets Stage

FLATCAP CARNIVAL

TROUSDALE

Flatcap Carnival are a bongo bashing, maraca shaking, trumpet tooting, dance inducing 7 piece Latin inspired ska band from York, UK. Created in 2016 as a means to bring some sunshine to a drizzly Yorkshire festival scene, the band have gone on to support a varied and eclectic range of artists including Too Many Zoos, Hot 8 Brass Band and Elvana. They’ve also appeared at festivals up and down the country. Originally inspired by the likes of The Cat Empire, they prefer not to be pigeonholed into one genre; Flatcap Carnival pride themselves on their unique mix of ska, Latin, cumbian and festival anthems which they call "SKAnival!!"

Trousdale is a powerful female band from South California consisting of Quinn D’Andrea, Georgia Greene and Lauren Jones. Their melodic and heartfelt harmonies are often compared to The Chicks and The Staves, but the girls draw inspiration from a wide array of music, including Crosby Stills and Nash, Kacey Musgraves and HAIM. Driven by their passion to empower young women, Trousdale is committed to making quality music that spreads a message of self-acceptance and love. WILL VARLEY

KINNARIS QUINTET

Regarded by Frank Turner as “one of the best songwriters in the UK”, Will Varley’s journey has taken him from open mics and busking, to headlining London's legendary Shepherd's Bush Empire. He has toured relentlessly across Europe and America and as a support act for Billy Bragg, Frank Turner, and The Proclaimers. His self-made music videos have clocked up millions of views on YouTube and the song, Seize The Night, is fast approaching seven million streams on Spotify. There is a depth to his songwriting that sets Will apart. From heart-wrenching stories of immigrants to an attempt at the history of the world in under four minutes, Varley's songs seem to transcend themselves, marrying vivid imagery, politics, emotion and surrealism to capture his musings.

Winners of the 2019 Belhaven Bursary for Innovation in Music, the most significant prize in Scotland, Kinnaris Quintet burst onto the scene in 2017 with a unique, highly emotive and powerful sound. Comprising three fiddles, mandolin and guitar, their music is euphoric and combines Scottish and Irish traditional music with bluegrass, classical, Scandinavian and Appalachian influences. They have become the folk band to see, with sell-out shows, appearances at most major folk festivals, and many prestigious music award wins. They comprise, Aileen Reid (5 string fiddle, vocals), Fiona MacAskill (fiddle), Laura Wilkie ( fiddle), Laura-Beth Salter (mandolin, tenor guitar, vocal), Jenn Butterworth(guitar, stomp, vocals).

AUDIENCE WITH

ADRIAN EDMONDSON We asked Adrian Edmondson to write a short biog to go here, but he said that is what his talk was about. You all know who he is anyway! That funny bloke off the telly, the writer, the serious actor (he even appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company), the person who’s been in bands. He did say that during lockdown he wrote some autobiographical pieces, more to make sense of his own life than anything else. He recorded ten of them for the Radio 3 programme The Essay. They touch on all his many achievements, but they’re centred around things that have deeper meaning for him: smoking, liver and onions, being nuts, money and fame and fans, his stupid name, following the route of the Jacobite Rebellion, and dancing to Sugar Sugar by The Archies. He says this is who he really is. Saturday 2.20pm Planets Stage

13

THE HAGGIS HORNS The Haggis Horns are an infamous funk extravaganza combining heavy breakbeat funk, soul, hip-hop & afrobeat with the virtuosity of trained jazz musicians. They have been rocking crowds the world over for years, winning fans with their distinctive sound. At the forefront of the UK funk scene since they came to attention on the legendary album Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds, they have five-fuelled albums under their belt. Members of The Haggis Horns have performed with the likes of Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, Jess Glynne, Amy Winehouse, Martha Reeves, Morcheeba, Roots Manuva, Elbow, Nightmares On Wax, The Human League, Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Robbie Williams, Duran Duran, Lisa Stansfield, Finley Quaye, Kano, Lily Allen, KT Tunstall and Snowboy, to name a few! THE BRIGHOUSE & THE BAR-STEWARD RASTRICK BAND SONS OF VAL DOONICAN The Brighouse & Rastrick Band, based in West Yorkshire, is one of the most famous brass bands in the world, widely regarded as the best and most consistent public subscription band. “Briggus” has won most of the premier brass band championships, plus attracted a formidable reputation for delighting everyday music fans and brass band connoisseurs alike. Ever popular, they caught the imagination of the British public with The Floral Dance, holding the No.2 position in the British singles chart for 9 weeks, pipped to the top spot by Paul McCartney and achieving sales of over a million. Recently they have engaged in a number of very successful collaborations, including with UTSf’s very own Kate Rusby. Saturday 4.30pm

Put on yer finest knitted gladrags, style your barnet, your dancing shoes and bring your finest singing voices, as we cordially invite you to witness the greatest show on Earth, in tank-tops. Hailing from reight here in Barnsley Rock City, they have a talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with new comedy lyrics, on acoustic geetar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, accordion, keyboard and the world’s first synthesiser ukulele. They continue to wow audiences with a fine selection of their greatest hits and their anarchic live shenanigans. They promise that they WILL rock you... but gently! Saturday 12.20pm Planets Stage

KATE RUSBY Often hailed as the “first lady of folk”, Kate Rusby is proudly celebrating 30 years of touring this year. Known for her wondrous singing, hugely engaging Yorkshire wit, this weekend we can expect a choice of much-loved classics from her back catalogue, together with a selection of fresh new songs from her most recent albums. A remarkable, interpretive singer, Kate’s soulful vocals resonate with the wistful beauty of an earthbound angel. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction, no matter how old or how modern, she has that rare ability to transport her audience, touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination. The crossover appeal Kate enjoys is unprecedented for a folk singer and has been achieved without resort to compromise. Her recent reimagined covers album Hand Me Down was her highest charting album to date, whilst the brand new 30 Happy Returns has attracted some amazing reviews. Saturday 8.45pm Planets Stage

THE BIG MOON Ever since lead singer Juliette Jackson laid the foundations for The Big Moon, back in 2014, the London-based band have consistently gone with their gut. At a time where guitarbased indie had fallen out of favour, they were credited with breathing new life into the genre, and were subsequently awarded a Mercury Music Prize nomination for their 2017 debut, Love in the 4th Dimension. Their muchanticipated second and most recent album, Walking Like We Do, like its predecessor, was written entirely by Jackson. However this time, every single aspect of each new song was undefined and up for debate and designed to be sonically bigger, deeper, wider and more spacious than a rock album. Their sound is now frequently piano and keyboard-led rather than being reliant on grungey guitars, and is rich in tight-knit vocal harmonies and rolling grooves. It’s a cinematic but innately hook-laden set that truly expands the band’s range. Saturday 10.25pm Little Lights Stage 17

SUNDAY THE YOUNG'UNS The Young’uns’ live shows are renowned roller coaster rides. With heart-on-the-sleeve storytelling, beautiful lyrics, warm harmonies and relentless repartee, Sean Cooney, Michael Hughes and David Eagle, the award-winning stand-up comedian, write and sing folk songs for today. They have led the band to three BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including Best Album in 2018 for Strangers, and the creation of the acclaimed international theatre show The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff, based upon their 2019 album of the same name. Born from empathy, crafted with care, fired by hope, and shared with joy, The Young'uns' songs have been described by The Scotsman “a heartfelt secular hymnary for these troubled times and a rallying call for humanity”. Sunday 6.20pm Planets Stage 18

IONA LANE Iona Lane is a Leeds-based folk singer and songwriter, praised by the likes of Karine Polwart and Julie Fowlis, who recently released her debut album entitled Hallival. Having found herself fascinated by folklore and folk stories from across the UK, she is inspired by natural landscapes, scientific discoveries, equality, human relationships and the supernatural, all tied together by a strong sense of place and a love for being in wild places. The name Hallival is taken after one of the mountains on the Isle of Rum, which inspired the writing for the opening track Western Tidal Swell. Iona has been praised throughout the scene for her delicate yet powerful vocals. Sunday 11.10am Little Lights Stage

DAMIEN O'KANE & RON BLOCK Damien O’Kane has played with Flook among others, before joining Kate Rusby’s band in 2008 and has been nominated twice at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Ron Block's big gig came in 1991, when he joined the Grammy winning Alison Krauss. Damien & Ron’s 2018’s debut record Banjophony, was a crossover of traditional Irish and bluegrass banjo never quite offered before. Their unity, sense of fun and insane abilities on tenor and 5-string banjo, have been described as ‘groundbreaking.’ Damien & Ron released their second record, Banjophonics, in July. They will be joined on stage by their long-time collaborator Duncan Lyall on bass and moog, Ali Hutton on guitars and very special guest for UTSf, Michael McGoldrick on flutes and whistles. Sunday 4.20pm Planets Stage

AN AUDIENCE WITH

JASON MANFORD Jason Manford from Salford, Lancashire, is a hugely popular and award winning stand-up comedian, writer, actor, radio and television presenter. He was crowned The City Life North West Comedian of the Year in 1999. After winning several smaller awards, Jason was nominated for the Perrier Award in Edinburgh in 2005. He shot to stardom as team Captain on Channel 4’s, 8 out of 10 Cats in 2007. UK tours and TV appearances all helped establish Jason as a nationally known comic, including ITV’s reality comedy competition, Show Me The Funny. He’s also an opera singer, toured with Alfie Boe, and appeared in the critically acclaimed hit West End musical Sweeney Todd. Jason hosts a live three hour show on Absolute Radio on Sunday which has huge ratings. In 2017, Jason released his debut album of musical favourites, A Different Stage which reached the Top 10 in the UK. Sunday 2.10pm Planets Stage 20

AZURE RYDER Australian singer-songwriter Azure Ryder’s debut releases have received plaudits from the BBC, Sunday Times, Notion and BBC Radio 1, plus incredible support in Australia from the Triple J, with her beautiful single Dizzy, being the most played on the station. Azure has teased us with her uniquely rich sound and garnered much intrigue and early praise for her clear natural talent. Having secured a record deal with the renowned Island Records, she has now achieved 40m plus global streams. Sunday 1.10pm Little Lights Stage

LANTERNS ON THE LAKE Fusing the most fragile and graceful end of the folk music spectrum to the most luminous properties of cinemascope rock, Lanterns on the Lake combine the brooding vocals of songwriter Hazel Wilde with textured instrumentation. Wilde is a songwriter possessed of a rare talent for finding the personal contours to contemporary issues, fully inhabiting them to make them real. Their most recent album, Spook the Herd, reflected rising socio-political tensions and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Its nine songs turn the microscope to issues including our hopelessly polarized politics, social media, addiction, grief and the climate crisis. Sunday 5.20pm Little Lights Stage

21

TANKUS THE HENGE Tankus the Henge have built their reputation on unforgettable songwriting, spectacular live performances and relentless hard work. Their funk-fueled repertoire is wildly eclectic, ranging from New Orleans inspired swing to heavy rock riffs, and since their beginnings in the ratty alleyways of London’s Soho, the band has evolved into a wild groove machine. Musically inspired by bands from the British invasion of the 60s and artists such as Tom Waits, Blur and Randy Newman, and with lyrics influenced by 20th Century American Literature, specifically the Beat Generation and Gonzo journalism, Tankus the Henge defy categorisation. Their hair-raising show, like no other, has to be seen and heard to be believed. Like a psychedelic, rock n roll octopus – only with four more legs. Sunday 10pm Little Lights Stage

HANNAH WILLIAMS INTERGALACTIC & THEAFFIRMATIONS BRASSTRONAUTS Hannah Williams & the Affirmations are darlings of the international soul scene, who have drawn praise from Craig Charles and the late greats Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley. A Jay-Z sample of their first album’s title track, Late Nights and Heartbreak led to worldwide touring, including highlights at Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz and Blue Note Tokyo. Then, multiple TV synchs for their second album’s title track, 50 Foot Woman, paved the way for the upcoming third album. During the pandemic, Hannah decided it would be fun to take on The Voice UK, opening the season with an electrifying performance. Hannah blew the minds of pundits across the country and made it through to the final gaining huge exposure. Sunday 3.20pm

For discerning fans of brass, global rhythms, reggae and sci-fi, this new band is for you. Intergalactic Brasstronauts are a 12-piece super-group, led by composer and producer King Zepha, featuring members of the Hallé Orchestra, East Park Reggae Collective, Bad Manners and New York Brass Band, fusing traditional acoustic instruments with ska, electronica and dub. Dennis Bovell exclaimed “we are loving your music!”, whilst Riddim Magazine has called them “crazy and immense". Saturday 12.10pm Planets Stage

SUZANNE VEGA Suzanne Vega is widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation. She came to attention following the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, which sold 1 million copies. 1987’s follow up, Solitude Standing, elevated her to star status. It hit No 2 in the UK and was nominated for three Grammys including Record of the Year and sold 3 million copies worldwide. In performances devoid of outward drama that nevertheless convey deep emotion, Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice that has been described as "a cool, dry sandpaper- brushed near-whisper" and as "plaintive but disarmingly powerful." A masterful storyteller who observes the world with a clinically poetic eye, Suzanne’s songs have always tended to focus on city life, ordinary people and real world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, Suzanne Vega’s work is immediately recognizable and utterly distinct. Sunday 8.35pm Planets Stage

DUSTBOWL REVIVAL After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring, LA’s Dustbowl Revival have a devoted fanbase from coast-to-coast in the US. An evolving group of string and brass players, their music is where folk and funk music meet. Joyful, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads, build around their voices, lifting audiences to form transcendent live shows. Over the years they have transitioned from a roots dance party band, to a nuanced ensemble embracing lushly cinematic, orchestrated set pieces and more soulful territory, without losing their original fire and continuing to thrive on the festival circuit. Their most recent album, Beside You, went to No 1 on the Amazon Americana Chart and the track, Got Over, has racked up over 7 million streams and counting online. Sunday 7.30pm Little Lights Stage

WHAT'S THE BUZZ? The Lady Who Would Bee Queen The drones mooch around me, seeking a date. Just one might get lucky, so shall be his fate To seed a new swarm. They all seem quite keen, But I will choose one, because I am the Queen. Then back to the hive for a snooze and some jelly. That’s fair worn me out, I might watch some telly. Bees Got Talent is a prog I’ve not seen, You can watch what you like when you are the Queen. I’m bigger than others, I stand out a lot, But my keeper still likes to paint on me a dot. It really annoys me you know, I mean, Tattoos are so unbecoming a Queen. He turned up today and began to waft smoke. Insufficient respect is shown by these folk. It’s supposed to placate us, but from what I’ve seen, It just makes us mardy and ticks off this Queen. My worker bees love to go looking for flowers. They’ll gather in pollen for hours and hours. They land on the petals and squeeze in between, To bring nectar home for this greedy Queen. I can lay over three thousand eggs in one day. Do I feel rather knackered? I should say! But I still carry on, lady-like and serene. There’s no flies on me. That’s right, I’m the Queen. Sometime in the future, two years from now, I’ll hang up my kit and just take a bow. My successor will suddenly appear on the scene And it’s goodnight, god bless and buzz off from this Queen.

44

Nigel Barker

TREASURE HUNT Some of our busy bees have lost their way, but don’t worry, they have their very own personal GPS tracker. Take a look at the map to see where they have landed. Each one is holding a letter. Find all the letters. What word do they spell out?

How many bees can you name? In Britain we have around 270 species of bee. Can you name 10 types?

WALK THE LINES Mark Fraser, The Storyteller returns! Visit the story tent for original tales and traditional stories. This year there are some very old fairy tales. Before the Grimm brothers and Disney got their greedy mitts on them, they were very different… stories of dragons, castles, fairies, wizards and ice cream. At night Jacob Cracker welcomes you to his dark parlour for stories of the weird, odd and slightly spooky. Not for the squeamish. All of this PLUS the story of the Dance Underneath the Stars awaits you in the story tent… 55

ACCESSIBILITY UTSf has a dedicated team of accessible volunteers overseen by our Accessible and Safeguarding Manager Moira. The team is available from 8am until midnight to support anybody who may have needs around accessibility. Based in the accessible hub to the north of the Satellite Field, they offer charging for scooters and other medical devices. Arrangements can also be made for the storage of medication in fridges. If you need anything fetching and carrying, or just a friendly chat, please speak to Moira or her team. A steward can also help you get in contact with them. Mobiloo is a toilet, shower changing facility with a step lift and has features such as a hoist, changing table, wet room, shelves and a bin.

Mobiloo opening times Thursday Midday - 2am Friday 6am - 2am Saturday 6am - 2am Sunday 6am - 2am Monday 6am - midday There are assistance dogs on site, but we please ask that they are not approached unless invited to do so. They are working dogs and need to concentrate. The sound systems on site are excellent, and we find that those that have a hearing impairment should try and sit centrally in the big tops for the best experience. We are always here to help. If you do find something or an area where you feel we can improve, please don’t hesitate to speak to us. We warmly welcome feedback and ideas.

2022 is an exciting year as we work with A Greener Festival and take steps to become exactly that! We all have a role to play but here’s what we plan to do this year:

58

W e have joined Music Declares Emergency to Declare a Climate Emergency We have taken the Vision 2025 Pledge C ontinue to use ultra-low-energy LED lighting across the festival site T empt you with the fantastic vegan and vegetarian food provided by our caterers O perate a reusable cups scheme on site for the bars or invite people to bring their own C ontinue our ban on single use plastic bottles and provide water refill stations across the site. S targazers who bring their own reusable coffee cups get a 25p discount on hot drinks M ake sure artists’ riders are green and sustainable H elp festival-goers organise car shares through our website Use green diesel on site where we can and look at how we can use onsite renewable energy and battery storage technologies. Look to reduce waste and increase recycling

Here are some other ways you can help: Buy a tree! For just £6 you can plant a tree as part of the Festival Wood initiative that we have signed up to. Festivals across the UK are contributing to a large rewilding project in Scotland. Take your own waste home! Inspired by the way you beautiful people leave the campsites spotless at the end of the festival, we came up with this plan to further reduce our carbon footprint. If thousands of Stargazers take their own recycling and waste home – to dispose of in the usual way – we could avoid lots of lorry journeys to deal with it. We’ll provide biodegradable bags for everyone who wants to take part – or better still bring you can bring your own reusable bags or containers.

On the subject of waste We are really pleased to be working with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council for our waste solution this year. All residual waste locally goes to the award-winning BDR Waste Partnership facility, www.bdronline.co.uk. Waste is segregated at the facility and as much as possible is recycled or reclaimed, resulting in minimal (3%) waste to landfill. Still, we are a temporary event and the most helpful thing you can do for us is to take your rubbish home and use permanent recycling & waste options.

Reduce • Reuse • Recycle • Recover • Dispose
