UnderneatH THE stars

WELCOME

We are thrilled to welcome you to our 6th Underneath the Stars Festival. Where has the time gone huh?! It feels like only yesterday when we sat in a little room and decided that a new summer festival would be a fantastic idea. 6 years on and we cannot believe how much this little gathering continues to evolve and generate unprecedented strength in the community. We simply love how everyone looks after each other and how in turn, everyone looks after the UTSf as if it were their own. There is something incredibly special about this and that we are truly humbled by. Not only is it an event where people can indulge their craving for international and local music but people from all walks of life can feel welcome and part of our big family, and boy what a big UTSf family we now have! Yay! We of course have many thank-yous for so many people. HUGE thanks to Mr Bob Barr and the Cinderhill Farm family and also Mr Horsfield for allowing us to return to this picturesque location. Last year was a massive success, though we appreciate the disruption caused to this working farm and what a large undertaking this is. We urge everyone to help us look after this amazing land and keep it in brilliant condition. That way we hope to return in 2020 and for years to come. To all our lovely volunteers, our Star Helpers, who are so appreciated and do so many wonderful things, thank you for being so caring, vigilant, helpful and well…lovely! We couldn’t and wouldn’t want to do it without you.

A big thank you to all our staff who help make the event happen including; Sally our volunteer chief, Glyn and the site build team, Glyn & Cerys who have created wonderful new colourful signage! Andy and the campsite crew, Moira who is ensuring all is accessible, Kate & Bob in the box office, Alison and the backstage squad, Eddie from Splendid Events, Light & Hoppy event bars and all their fab bar staff. Big love once again to Celeste, Amanda and all the family events team in the Bonnie Bairns area. Paul and the Silkstone Scout Group, thanks for filling our bellies once more and keeping our site spotless all weekend. Leila and Andy, thank you for returning to MC. To everyone else who is out of sight that makes our UTSf the best it can be, we are indebted to you. Not forgetting a massive thank you to YOU for supporting UTSf once more and being part of our oh so loved family. We are so excited to share our lineup this year. Have a wonderful weekend of discovery and we look forward to seeing you again 31 July to 2 August 2020. Have fun, keep safe, be happy - UTSf

TOBY BURTON Toby Burton is a 21-year-old singersongwriter whose influences include City and Colour, Paolo Nutini and Passenger. Capturing the attention of audiences with heartfelt self-penned lyrics and soaring choruses, Toby has landed appearances at several large festivals as well as slots supporting Seafret, Meadowlark and Izzy Bizu. EMMA MCGRATH

YOU TELL ME

Emma McGrath is an 18 year old singer-songwriter from Harpenden, North London. Writing her own material since 2013, she self-released her first EP, The Judgement, in November 2014. This was followed up in December 2015 with the single Sit With Me, which caught the attention of key media including BBC Introducing who awarded it Track of the Week twice and Radio 2 where it received plays from both Dermot O’Leary and Bob Harris. Topping off a great 2015, Emma was awarded The PRS Foundation’s Lynsey de Paul prize. Definitely not one to be missed!

As one half of Field Music, Peter Brewis has been honing the craft of pop songwriting for almost fifteen years, whilst Sarah Hayes has been exploring contemporary folk in her solo work, and the world of indie-pop via her band Admiral Fallow. By blending their distinct compositional talents, they’ve created a record that possesses their own clear styles but also a new voice too. With both of them writing songs and lyrics, Peter describes it as “a sort of dualpersonal record”. Sonically, the result is a subtly crafted album with a rich and intricate sense of composition, in which strings glide above multi-layered keyboards and percussion, and vocal melodies wrap around one another in snug unison.

THE KATE AND SAL SHOW THE LOCAL HONEYS The girls are back in town ... back by popular demand for a third instalment of rambling and reminiscing from Kate Rusby and friend of 40+ years and excellent whistle player, Sally Smith. Good grief ... who knows what will happen! Not to be missed! Friday 4.40pm Planets Stage

From the rolling hills of the bluegrass and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Montana Hobbs and Linda Jean Stokley are two exceptionally talented young women who will be bringing the folk music of Kentucky to UTSf. If you’re looking for an antidote to the surplus of young beardy middle-class men singing winsomely about love, then The Local Honeys will bring you something more vital, more socially and environmentally aware. They'll deliver it so beautifully, you'll be hooked! Friday 5.40pm Little Lights Stage

CC SMUGGLERS

OLD MAN LUEDECKE Old Man Luedecke is the recording and performing name of multiple award-winning, Canadian roots singer-songwriter Christopher Luedecke. Born in Toronto, but now based in Nova Scotia, from the start of his career his songs have brought joy and illumination to independent minded people fighting the good fight of their lives. A much loved, live performer, his storytelling art, song craft and comic timing, engage and thrill an audience with his weirdly wordy ways. His latest album, Easy Money, came out in June.

Fronted by the charismatic Richie Pyrnne, CC Smugglers have worked their way up from young street performers to some of the biggest festivals and venues around the world, thanks to their engaging live performances and innovative self-promotion. Unafraid to blend old-time, world and folk styles, their hugely engaging performances are built on excellent musicianship, great tunes and proper showmanship. Friday 7.50pm Little Lights Stage

Friday 6.45pm Planets Stage 5

THE PROCLAIMERS Strikingly individual, twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid emerged 31 years ago with their debut album This Is The Story and Top 3 single Letter From America. Since then, their enduring appeal across generations has over the years seen them enjoy huge success across the globe. The Proclaimers songs are timeless, capturing a gamut of human emotions, written with poignancy, emotional honesty, political fire and wit. Their songs feature at weddings, funerals and everything in-between and are known the world over. They are at their very best live and we are delighted to welcome them to UTSf 2019! Friday 9pm Planets Stage

COCO AND THE BUTTERFIELDS CoCo and the Butterfields have developed an enviable reputation for their exhilarating live shows. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Dulcima Showan and songwriter Tom Twyman have played with their band to enthusiastic audiences all over the UK and Europe, selling out thousand capacity venues and appearing at some of the world’s most prestigious music festivals such as Glastonbury, Isle of Wight and Bestival! SATURDAY

ALDEN PATTERSON AND DASHWOOD Norwich based folk trio Alden Patterson and Dashwood weave rich vocal harmonies, fiddle, dobro and guitar around beautifully written original songs and melodies. Their music takes influence from folk traditions from both sides of the Atlantic with uplifting instrumentals and self-penned songs depicting tales of young travellers, sleepy seas and their affection for home. BARNSLEY YOUTH CHOIR

SAM KELLY TRIO

Performing a varied repertoire of music that includes classical, pop, gospel and folk music, Barnsley Youth Choir return following yet another glorious appearance at last year’s UTSf. Led by Musical Director Matthew Wright, Barnsley Youth Choir, established in 2009, is a registered charity run by volunteers that seek to provide outstanding opportunities for young people who live in Barnsley and has developed a reputation for excellence.

Sam Kelly has quickly made a name for himself as one of the premier singers to emerge from the folk scene in the past 15 years. His band, The Lost Boys, are festival favourites up and down the country, and he has won multiple awards including the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award for emerging talent. This is a rare opportunity to see the original core line-up that birthed the big band, as Sam is joined by Jamie Francis on banjo and Evan Carson on percussion. They will be showcasing their imaginative and high-octane rock-tinged reworking of traditional folk music from both sides of the Atlantic, seamlessly mixed in with original songs and the occasional surprise cover.

THE UNTHANKS With an approach to storytelling that makes easy bedfellows of polar opposites such as staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure, glacial minimalism and heartbreaking empathy, Mercury nominated band, The Unthanks, make art-folk with a booming socially conscious heart. Using the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point, the influence of Miles Davis, Steve Reich, Sufjan Stevens, Robert Wyatt, Antony & The Johnsons, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in the band’s ten albums to date. At the nucleus of a constantly evolving unit is the traditional upbringing of Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank and the arrangements and writing of Yorkshireman Adrian McNally. Saturday 2.30pm Planets Stage

10

SHADOWLARK Formed in the halls of their local college, Shadowlark, have segued into the public consciousness seamlessly over the past year, combining the ethereal and visceral with unnerving aplomb. The trio’s front-woman, Ellen Smith, is the charismatic counterpoint, bleeding her personal experiences into raw and emotive compositions. A powerhouse who operates in the same vein as Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan or London Grammar’s Hannah Reid, Smith spins webs of wispy tales with keyboardist Chris Quick and drummer James Warrender fleshing out the lush landscape. Saturday 3.40pm Little Lights Stage

DAMIEN O'KANE WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS Irish musician and singer Damien O’Kane is no stranger to UTSf. He has graced its stage with wife and Festival patron Kate Rusby since Year 1. But right from the start has also appeared with his own bands and in other guises, most recently with Ron Block. Steeped in traditional Irish music, Damien grew up in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. Touring the world with his very own family band, he developed a deep respect and understanding of the folk tradition but also forged a healthy appetite to explore its broadest borders and test its boundaries. Damien will be joined by his entire immediate family members, as well as other guests, for a special oneoff show this year. Hold onto your 'paddy caps' folks, you are in for one heck of a ride! Saturday 4.40pm Planets Stage

RUTH NOTMAN & SAM KELLY

THE BAR-STEWARD SONS OF VAL DOONICAN Familiar to the UTSf stage and back by HUGE popular demand, we give a warm welcome to our fave boys hailing from the notas-posh-end of Barnsley. They have a talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with new comedy lyrics, on acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and accordion. Boys, welcome home. Saturday 5.45pm Little Lights Stage 12

Two of the finest young singers to have emerged from the UK folk scene have unexpectedly joined forces to record a dynamic duo album that promises to be one of the most exciting releases of 2019. Ruth Notman and Sam Kelly have signed to the Pure Records label, fusing their celebrated talents on recently released, Changeable Heart. In the producer’s seat is the innovative Damien O’Kane, known for his brilliant refashioning of traditional songs. Rich and revivalist, these are songs of love from every perspective; spurned love, fragile love, brave love, saucy love. Arrangers O’Kane, Notman and Kelly aren’t afraid to break taboos and put a unique stamp on some of the best-known traditional songs in the folk canon. Saturday 6.50pm Planets Stage

BASKERY These three sisters can’t recall when or why they started playing; the music’s always just been there. In their late teens, they joined forces with their dad, who for decades was a one-man band playing old blues and country tunes for a living. This foundation of classic roots music and Americana settled in their hearts, but also awoke the urge of breaking the rules of traditional music. Baskery is a band built on what three people can do together and it’s all about turning the music on its head, blending the straightforwardness of punk with the subtlety of singersongwriting. In 2015 the sisters were invited to join legendary artist Robbie Williams as opener and special guests on his arena tour throughout Europe. Later the same year they also toured the US with Gary Clark Jr and Brandi Carlile. Saturday 7.50pm Little Lights Stage

BILLY BRAGG Billy Bragg has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. The three-and-a-half decades have been marked by a No. 1 hit single, having a street named a after him, being the subject of a South Bank Show, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Leftfield at Glastonbury, sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria, being mentioned in Bob Dylan’s memoir, writing two nonfiction books and meeting the Queen. At their best, Billy’s songs present "the perfect Venn diagram between the political and the personal" (The Guardian). Honoured with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the Ivor Novello awards in May 2018, he is regarded as a valuable statesman. Saturday 9pm Planets Stage

14

CUT CAPERS Cut Capers is a nine-piece band that formed in Bristol in late 2011 with a style based in live hip-hop and swing. They burst onto the UK circuit, playing gigs and festivals up and down the country with their high energy shows. Over the years they have established themselves as a formidable live outfit, playing headline shows and main stage performances at some of the UK’s biggest festivals including Glastonbury and Boomtown Fair. Seek out your dance shoes stargazers and get ready to 'cut a rug'. Saturday 10.30pm Little Lights Stage

SUNDAY

KATHERINE PRIDDY The last 6 months have been a whirlwind for Birmingham’s folk starlet Katherine Priddy. Katherine self-released her debut EP Wolf back in September 2018 to critical acclaim, which came from the likes of folk rock royalty Richard Thompson, who selected it as his "Best Thing I’ve Heard All Year’" in MOJO. Katherine’s stock continues to rise within the folk world and beyond. Sunday 11am Little Lights Stage

NIA WYN

HANNAH READ

Growing up in a small town in North Wales, Nia Wyn found solace in old soul records she found in junk shops. Using these muses to craft songs of personal experience, this young artist, who possesses a remarkable voice, captures something vivid and compelling. Nia’s talent for raw and powerful storytelling, set within a kind of unorthodox, engrossing vocal, marks her out against the backdrop of other emerging young female artists. Nia's soul-crossover music has recently been featured on BBC Radio 2’s Blues Playlist, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Introducing and she has opened for Paloma Faith and Paul Weller. Tipped by Huw Stephens as one of BBC Introducing's 'ones to watch' in 2019 and a debut EP in the pipeline, this year is set to see big things for Nia.

Hailing from Scotland and now based in Brooklyn, Hannah Read is a versatile multi-instrumentalist widely recognised on the international stage. She’s best known for her fiddle playing, songwriting and was recently described as one of “the finest singers of the day” in the UK’s MOJO. Her original songs are largely influenced by the people, places and landscapes she has encountered along the way, as well as musings of home, travel, love and loss, as can be heard on her critically acclaimed new album, Way Out I’ll Wander, on Hudson Records, which is comprised of “nine gorgeous originals” (The Guardian). AN AUDIENCE WITH RUTH JONES Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing including BBC 1’s Gavin and Stacey, in which she played the incorrigible Nessa, and Sky’s Stella, where she starred in the title role. Ruth has won acclaim for her performances in the dramas Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, Little Dorrit and Hattie, as well as the comedies Little Britain, Saxondale and Nighty Night. K.O.G & THE ZONGO BRIGADE

BISCUITHEAD & THE BISCUIT BADGERS Faster than a speeding puffin, more chocolatey than a chocolate labrador, descending from apes, Biscuithead & The Biscuit Badgers release your ears to play backgammon undisturbed. Tuba, piano, drums, ukulele, will tickle and rub your senses into a fun stew. Enjoy yourselves; Biscuithead & The Biscuit Badgers are irresistably daft!

Under the guidance of the outrageously talented Ghanaian force of nature Kweku Sackey, aka K.O.G, and the whirlwind of energy that is Jamaican rapper Franz Von Song, the Zongo Brigade deliver infectious, high-energy West African grooves via Sheffield, drawing on afrobeat, soul, funk, rock, hip hop and reggae. This 8-piece Afro-fusion band has fast gained recognition all over the UK. K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade’s signature mix of high-energy songs, operatic vocal effects, along with the hard-hitting patois raps has led the band to perform on some of the biggest stages including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds Festivals and numerous clubs and venues around Europe. BESS ATWELL Bess Atwell is “your new ethereal folk-pop princess” (Wonderland Magazine). In 2015, not long after dropping out of university to pursue music, Bess garnered the attention of major news outlets after a slew of showcases for The Great Escape Festival. Her original solo project has evolved into a full band sound soaked in four-part vocal harmony fulfilling Bess’s desire to create a more dynamic live show, with traces of traditional folk music. Bess's latest single Grace is the more restrained, intimate successor of her August offering Swimming Pool, both of which have been playlisted by BBC Radio 6 Music. For fans of Sharon Van Etten, Fleet Foxes, and Carole King. Sunday 5pm Little Lights Stage

LE VENT DU NORD Renowned as wonderful ambassadors of La Francophonie, Le Vent du Nord is also acknowledged as an influential force and key player in Quebec’s traditional folk music revival. Since the group’s founding in 2002 and over 1800 shows, the band has racked up several prestigious awards, including 2 JUNOS (Canada’s Grammys), 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards, 1 Félix, 1 Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros (France), touring Artist of the Year nominee at BC Touring Council and Artist of the Year at Folk Alliance International (US). HOPE & SOCIAL We are hugely excited to welcome the return of Hope & Social to UTSf. We last saw these very talented ‘boys in blue’ dominate the stage for an incredible performance back in 2015 and we simply couldn’t wait to invite them to play once again. Hope & Social are more than a band. They are a band anyone can join; they can turn their studio into a bistro for 70 fans; a band who involve people in what they do, from teaching brass instruments in their Streetband Named Desire project

to collaborating with other artists in their Crypt Covers album. Hope & Social are renowned for making every gig an event. They throw themselves wholeheartedly into every performance and perfectly bridge the gap between the stage and the audience. Anthemic songs, infectious melodies and a formidable live experience. The stage is very much yours chaps. Sunday 7.10pm Little Lights Stage

KATE RUSBY Well, it wouldn’t be UTSf without Kate, who’d like to offer her own warm Yorkshire welcome to each and every one of you, at the festival her family production team run. This year, along with much-loved classics from her back-catalogue, Kate will be performing songs from Philosophers, Poets & Kings, her latest and 17th studio album, which was released on Pure Records this May. Seamlessly blending old and new, traditional folk, covers and self-penned songs, it is a deeply personal collection which pays homage to her family and musical heritage, and home life in Yorkshire. With Philosophers, Poets and Kings, Kate raises a toast to her parents and recalls an upbringing filled with music; whether revisiting songs performed during wine-fuelled family singalongs or her formative years spent watching festival performances by famed musicians. A remarkable interpretive singer, Kate’s soulful vocals resonate with the wistful beauty of an earthbound angel. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction, no matter how old or how modern, she has that rare ability to transport her audience, touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination. The crossover appeal Kate enjoys has been achieved without resort to compromise. Kate’s wondrous singing and hugely engaging Yorkshire wit, the intuitive support of the band and the brass boys will ensure that you will be treated to a truly remarkable and unforgettable evening. MILLY JOHNSON Milly Johnson was born, bred and still lives in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. An only child with a passion for writing stories, Milly’s parents weren’t interested in books but her grandparents loved them and inspired Milly’s interest by bringing her copies of Enid Blyton’s classic tales, The Wishing Chair, The Enchanted Wood and Amelia Jane. Now one of the Top 10 Female Fiction authors in the UK, 16 novels on and with millions of copies of her books sold across the world, Milly’s star continues to rise. NORTHERN SOUL DANCE WORKSHOP

ALDEN PATTERSON AND DASHWOOD

Northern Soul was a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s, based on soul with a heavy beat and some of the coolest moves around. If you’ve ever felt you want to dance but think you have no rhythm, no coordination or don’t have the confidence to just get up and have a go, this is the place to start. Ideal for any age or ability.

Folk trio Alden Patterson and Dashwood will be in concert on Saturday and on Sunday invite you to a meet the artist workshop. The latter will include group singing, songwriting, instrumentation and a question and answer session. Learn all about their rich vocal harmonies and melodies, plus fiddle, dobro, guitar and mandolin playing.

TOAST

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

Pif-Paf ask you to join them at their tiny roaming world of flavours, sounds, fire and stories. Help them Toast the pancakes that tie us all together and make us all special, sharing tales, songs and tiny tasty morsels; it wouldn't be the same without you all. May contain gluten.

Strawberries - Cream - Action! Britain's top miniature, outdoor, comedy tennis show will be in full swing throughout the day in the main arena. Pulling the court, scoreboard and posh umpire behind him, our highly-strung tennis player will be looking for worthy opponents. The ensuing comedy matches feature everything about tennis that we love the best... painful injuries, temper tantrums, and of course slow motion replays. The court is pristine, the umpire inscrutable and the sprinkler system is unpredictable and indiscriminate; it’s just like the real thing!

Supported by Arts Council England, Without Walls BluePrint and Wild Rumpus. Friday Only

BONNIE BAIRNS AREA Designed with kids in mind and packed full of fun, the family events team have got a whole host of goings on for the most inquisitive, creative and playful bonnie bairns of all ages.

SUN TENT

MOON TENT

We think a spacecraft must have crashed in the Sun Tent this year as there is so much cosmic and extra terrestrial activity going on. Commonly known as the messy tent (clue is in the name) we have all kinds of crafts led by our amazing team of star helpers. All activities are listed in the timetables on the following pages. Oh yes, these activities will be totally out of this world!

Well, gravity seems to be no problem in the Moon Tent where toys, books, playmats, colouring (for all ages), a dressing up box, outdoor games, and other fun items (kindly provided by Cawthorne Toddler Group) are firmly on the ground and available to interact with. It is a (fairly) calm area where families can relax for a while before delving back to the music and mayhem. We also have singing activities for our littlest Bonnie Bairns with Amanda Cheetham of Rhythm and Rhyme at 10am, 12noon, 2pm and 4pm each day.

BUMS AND BOOBS TENT A discrete and distraction free space for baby feeding should you require it. We also have baby changing facilities including mats, wipes, potties etc. Just outside we have a dedicated and frequently cleaned children’s toilet.

Please understand children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in all activities on site at all times, and we do hope adults will join in the fun too.
