THE OFTEN HERD
While they may be rooted in bluegrass and resemble an American string band, The Often Herd’s transatlantic sound is deeply coloured by their surroundings of Northern England. They’ve made a name for themselves to quote Maverick Magazine, with “a winning combination of virtuosity, enthusiasm, willingness to push boundaries and above all great songs and playing.” Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin), write songs steeped in personal experience, whilst drawing from a wide pool of influences ranging from old-time mountain music and traditional Northumbrian tunes to folkrock, retro-pop and psychedelia. American-born fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana add fiery instrumental skills to the mix, adding depth and intensity to the arrangements.

RUM BUFFALO
Rum Buffalo have been making a name for themselves with a unique brand of jazz flavoured psych-rock. The band started as a busking jazz troupe, entertaining tourists in London’s historic Covent Garden. As the crowds grew, so did their sound, until they finally became the leviathan they are today. Improbable horn lines, reminiscent of big band greats such as Duke Ellington, sit amongst huge sonic landscapes provided by Jack White-esque guitar, twisted synths, and groovy rhythms. This writhing beast of sound is jockeyed by frontman Jake Stevens who offers glimpses into dreamscape visions with his other worldly lyricism and soulful vocals. Over the years, Rum Buffalo have travelled around entertaining and dazzling audiences from Istanbul to Reykjavík with their flamboyant and tight performances.

Sustainability
We consider ourselves bloomin’ lucky to host our festival on such an incredible site with such gorgeous natural surroundings. We endeavour to deliver our event with the least amount of environmental impact as possible.
Promoting sustainability at music festivals is crucial for a greener future and we are so pleased to have the wonderful Amelia Tinkler leading our UTSf sustainability team this year. By implementing our eco-friendly initiatives, Amelia, alongside her team, is minimising our environmental impact and hopes to also inspire festival-goers to adopt sustainable practices.
We hope you will join us in our efforts to ‘leave no trace’ and be as environmentally conscious in your actions and choices whilst visiting our festival site.
What we are doing:
We use BDR partnership for waste management (waste is sorted offsite) whose aim is to reduce, re-use, recycle and recover energy from South Yorkshire’s waste.
We have chosen to use LED lighting across our whole site. All vendors are encouraged to use bioware food packaging. We encourage people to car share or use public transport to minimise carbon emissions.
We have our reliable Darton-Kexbrough-Cawthorne shuttle bus in the evenings to help locals to get to and from our festival.
We have activities that focus on sustainable issues, such as our amazing SpaceCrafters and junk modelling in Galactic Odyssey.
68
How can you help?
We encourage everyone to use reusable cups and water bottles to reduce waste.
We offer vegetarian and vegan food options to reduce our festival’s ecological footprint and it’s all super yummy!
We invite you to take your waste home where you can. We encourage you to bring your own clean tupperware for food vendors to use.
We would love your support with our “festival woods initiative”. Simply buy a tree at the festival and we’ll take care of the rest.
“Art” of this world!
Here on site you may have noticed some rather magnificent creations? They have been designed and produced by our super-talented SpaceCrafter team, who try to reuse and recycle as much as they can whilst constructing their art pieces.
Volunteers are also green!
Our wonderfully supportive stewarding team has chosen not to have different t-shirts each year, and have picked the option to have a UTSf t-shirt designed which can be reused every festival from now on to reduce waste. This means they can bring it back each year...and it’s actually green!
By prioritising sustainability at our music festivals, we can enjoy the music whilst protecting our planet for generations to come. Amelia and her team will be present onsite and if there is anything you would like to see from us or any thoughts you might have about how we can improve our sustainability, please do not hesitate to approach them.
