3 IS A
MAGIC NUMBER! WELCOME TO THE THIRD UNDERNEATH THE STARS FESTIVAL. WE HOPE YOU HAVE A UNIQUE AND UNFORGETTABLE WEEKEND AT OUR CELEBRATION OF MUSIC, ARTS AND CULTURE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL CORNER OF YORKSHIRE.
During the busy weekend we, the festival directors, don’t always get chance to personally thank the whole incredible team who make Underneath the Stars Festival such a joyous event. So right here we would like to say a super-massive galactic thanks to all the volunteers, site builders and decorators, backstage crew, on-stage crew, bar staff, campsite team, medical staff, security detail, Concert MCs, toilet and shower crew, Silkstone scout group, family events and workshop team, Cawthorne Church tea ladies, Campsite possé and everyone else who gives us a helping hand - you are all amazing and we are eternally grateful, we are very aware an event of this type would never be possible without your dedication. This year’s line-up has, as always, been influenced by our personal travels and travails throughout our time on tours, gigs, and other festivals over the years and we are humbled that such an amazing bunch of performers agree to join us from around the world (and also from just down the road in Dodworth) to dazzle and astound us this weekend.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the local communities of Cawthorne and High Hoyland for their understanding and patience. We appreciate it can be an inconvenience to have a weekend festival event happen on your doorstep and we aim to minimise any potential disruption. So we ask all our festival revellers to please be mindful of our surroundings and consider how lucky we are to have Underneath the Stars in this special location. Thanks once again to the gracious Nicholson family, for allowing us to mob their beautiful fields and to evict their charming sheep from said fields. Cannon Hall Open Farm is a fantastic family business and a huge inspiration to us, do go and take advantage of your half price entry to the farm with your weekend festival ticket or failing that grab a very tasty bacon sarnie and a cup of tea in their cafe in the mornings, you won’t be disappointed. We would just like to finish up by saying a massive thank you to you for coming and supporting our dream festival and we hope you have a very special weekend.

FABIAN HOLLAND Fabian Holland is a songwriter who gets right to the heart of the human condition in a disarmingly subtle way. Lyrically evocative , sometimes moody and melancholic, Holland’s unadorned music has a flip side of songs of upbeat, wry humour but always acutely observed – songs of people and places, strangers and kin, human frailties and foibles– sensitive sonic snapshots producing perfect visual imagery, by turns unsettling and reassuring.
FRIDAY 22 JULY | 4.30PM LITTLE LIGHTS STAGE
OLIVIA CHANEY Chaney admits she became “a wild-child delinquent” when she entered her teen years, but was saved from more serious trouble by landing a scholarship as a piano and voice student to Manchester’s prestigious Chetham’s School of Music. From there she graduated to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she spent more time breaking rules but also collaborating with young composers, exploring free-improvisation and experimental orchestrations of a growing repertoire of her own songs.

GILMORE & ROBERTS Contemporary folk/acoustic duo Gilmore & Roberts combine award-winning songwriting with astounding musicianship and their trademark harmonies to create a powerful wall of sound. Nominated three times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Katriona Gilmore (fiddle, mandolin) and Jamie Roberts (guitar) met while studying at Leeds College of Music and released their debut album in 2008.
MICHAEL MCGOLDRICK & FRIENDS
2015 saw the release of their fourth album, Conflict Tourism, which appeared on several end-of-year Best Album lists and received national airplay on both BBC Radio 2 & BBC 6 music.
A co-founder of Flook and Lúnasa, and a linchpin of Capercaillie’s line-up since 1998, Manchester-born flute/whistle and uilleann pipes maestro Michael McGoldrick has in recent years performed around the globe in ex-Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler’s band – including a tour with both Knopfler and Bob Dylan.

VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. On this first album, Vieux paid homage to his father and follows Ali’s musical tradition, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabaté, as well as his late father. One of the tracks, ‘Courage’, is on the soundtrack of the film The First Grader (2010). Since then Vieux has gone on to produce numerous album’s exploring and evolving his own sound from his Malian roots.
Influenced by an eclectic range of styles and artists – the honest grit and gravel of Woody Guthrie, the gypsy bone-cage burlesque of Gogol Bordello. A unique mash-up of folk/blues, waltz tempos and hoe-downs and french zazou in outlandish carnival style. It is loud, funky and fun.
In 2015, Vieux released another unexpected, genre-bending collaborative album, this time with New York-based singer Julia Easterlin, aptly titled 'Touristes'. The album shot to the top of the iTunes World chart and earned critical acclaim, including that of John Schaefer (NPR) who called it "brilliant." With each new project, Vieux expands his horizons, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians.

SATURDAY JOY ATLAS
GRAND OLD UKE OF YORK These titans of tweed and maestro’s of this mini musical marvel are all geared to offer you a veritable feast of festival fun.
SATURDAY 23 JULY | 10.30AM LITTLE LIGHTS STAGE
Pop four-piece Joy Atlas, who’ve already received support on BBC 6 Music from the likes of Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson following the release of their first two singles ‘Dismount’ and ‘Notice It All’. They offer radiant, angular pop music that owes as much of a debt to minimal American R&B as it does to sunny Scando-Pop, with their emotionally complex, sleek and unique sound rivalling the likes of Robyn, Goldfrapp and Bjork on a particularly chorus-led day.

BISCUITHEAD AND THE BISCUIT BADGERS From time immemorial these four musicians have stood at the gateway of nonsense, begging for peanuts. Riotously odd, jolly and engaging, you can enjoy a calypso about land hermit crabs, a celebration of David Attenborough and an anthem to cheese. Surrender to the infectious daftness. “Sometimes I love bands because their music is so exquisitely crafted and sometimes simply because it’s irresistibly daft. In the case of Biscuithead and the Biscuit Badgers it’s both!” Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

TIM DALLING People struggle to find a term that suitably describes Tim Dalling in his many wondrous guises. Let’s just say that he’s a one of a kind, not simply as he’s a super-talented bloke, but also because he does it all with such remarkable panache. Down the years, he’s brought tears to the cheeks of many incredulous audiences as the kilted accordionplaying fall guy with The New Rope String Band …and stunned audiences with hugely accomplished musicianship that lies at the very core of his massively-creative spirit. His other side, for many, has been his best-kept secret… a song-writer and performer who has been described as a cross between Ivor Cutler and Randy Newman.

KEZIA Kezia is a singer/songwriter who’s sound drifts between folk and blues with a tinge of country. Her lyric based songs are accompanied by thoughtful melodies on the guitar and piano. RON BLOCK & SIERRA HULL Throughout his extraordinary career multi-instrumentalist Ron Block has been something of a musical Huck Finn, a tireless adventurer exploring various styles yet rooted firmly in the bluegrass-country tradition. Sierra has been recognised from age 11 as a virtuoso mandolinplayer, astonishing audiences and fellow-musicians alike. Now a seasoned touring musician nearing her mid-20s with a new solo album ‘Weighted Mind’ receiving critical acclaim - be prepared for something really special folks!

KATE RUSBY Our gracious leader and a towering (not physically, she is only 5’ 1/2”!) inspiration. Underneath the Stars festival simply would not exist without her. If the festival can reflect even a small percentage of her musical integrity, honesty and humble Yorkshire charm we will have gained a mighty victory. She is the defining voice of contemporary English Folk music and her exquisite interpretations of traditional songs and finely wrought self penned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre. A recent recipient of Freeman of the Borough of Barnsley honour, as well as numerous other musical awards and accolades, her performance at this year's festival will feature old favourites and some first performances of material from her forthcoming 'Life in a Paper Boat' studio album. As ever, she will be joined on stage by her fabulous band, Nick Cooke, Duncan Lyall, Damien O’Kane, Stevie Iveson, Stevie Byrnes, Josh Clarke, and as a special treat for UTSf2016 Kate will also be backed by both her string quartet and brass quintet. DANCING YEARS
DERVISH
Dancing Years are a five piece alt-indie back from Leeds. Led by frontman David Henshaw’s mesmerising vocals, the band, also comprising Joe Lawrenson (keys), Joe Montague (drums), Dom Butler (violin) and Dan Fielding (guitar) create glistening soundscapes to rival Sigur Ros with the immediacy of a hook-laden Elbow.
County Sligo’s finest export, Dervish are one of the great bands ever to have come out of Ireland. Fronted as ever by the captivating Cathy Jordan – regarded by many as the supreme frontwoman in all of Ireland – the line-up of fiddle, flute, bouzouki, mandola, bodhran & accordion draw from seemingly limitless depths of talent, finesse, subtlety and fiery energy. Exceptional musicianship, breathtaking vocals, vibrant sets of tunes and instantly compelling songs all come together to make Dervish as complete a band as are to be found anywhere in the tradition.

BYE BENECO Through a growing slate of live performances, Bye Beneco have emerged as willing to explore sounds and words without constraint. Indeed, this is nothing short of the band’s primary compulsion (and is frequently reflected in the kinetic way Bye Beneco’s members swop instruments and mic’s during their live performances).
Consisting of four members, LennyDee Doucha, Bergen Nielson and Matthew Watson their instruments include drums, guitar, percussion, vocals and anything else they can get their hands on. Bye Beneco’s music and performances are engaging on a multitude of levels, and each show is a rare and unique experience to be savoured.

SUNDAY LOWRI EVANS To date Lowri’s career has been the very definition of ‘independent’. Welsh-born, Welsh-speaking, Newport based Evans’ story has not been one of hype or hyperbole, overnight success or big record company intervention but the story of an artist whose faith in herself and her songs has never wavered. As a consequence her musical journey has not always been easy but it has always been interesting. From a wellspring of innate talent and a voice that holds audiences spellbound she has worked resolutely – with a little help from family and friends, of course – to realise her dream of making music for a living.

JIM EVANS Jim Evans is a folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, with a lyrical approach to the genre, draws in elements from a vast scope of roots music from both sides of the Atlantic. He has firmly set up camp in a tradition of songwriters who discover, borrow and then take the genre to a new place, often with vivid imagery at its centre. His debut album, ‘On Seeds and Shoes’, was released in June 2014, and since then he has been extensively playing his finger picking guitar and frailing banjo for audiences all over the UK and in Germany.

BLUE ROSE CODE
West of Eden is the Swedish folk-rock band that has thrilled audiences in Sweden and abroad for over a decade with their unique sound and brilliant songwriting. Masterful musicianship combined with the extraordinary voice of singer Jenny Schaub and a deep love for the traditional Celtic folk music has earned them a solid reputation amongst critics and fans around the globe.
In the space of only a short few years and two stellar albums, Blue Rose Code, Edinburgh-born Ross Wilson, has gone from song-writing in the obscurity of an East London flat to being celebrated by the industry and fans alike as a legacy artist whose work stands alone. As BBC Radio 3 broadcaster MaryAnne Kennedy said recently, “Blue Rose Code is one of those rare artists whose work makes you sit up and listen”.

CURTIS ELLER’S AMERICAN CIRCUS Curtis Eller is a banjo player, songwriter and rock & roll singer. After beginning his show business career at the age of seven as a juggler and acrobat, the Detroit native turned to the banjo and lit out for New York City where he rose to obscurity as “New York’s angriest yodeling banjo player”. Eller’s compositions describe a dreamlike vision of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one. Past recordings have seen a ghastly parade of historical luminaries, from Abraham Lincoln and Buster Keaton to Amelia Earhart and Joe Louis, sharing the spotlight with a host of Civil War generals and corrupt 19th century politicians.

DECLAN O’ROURKE Declan O’Rourke was a latecomer to the Dublin singer-songwriter scene but, in his mid-twenties, within months of discovering Dublin’s bustling songwriter open-mic circuit, O’Rourke found himself in the mix with the likes of Paddy Casey, Gemma Hayes, Damian Rice and many other Irish singer-songwriters. He plays to sold-out crowds in his native Ireland and, more recently, further afield. A consummate and versatile performer, his songs mesmerize regardless of whether performed solo, with a band, string quartet, full orchestra, or as a trio.

The stage is set, les artistes are ready, but these faded stars await an audience to whoosh them back to full splendour. Only you can awaken our artistes to find out what they hold in store. They are waiting for you around the festival site. You hold the key.
TIN TYPE TRAILER
Tin Type Trailer is a traveling Victorian darkroom which produces unique photographs on tin plates using a 19th Century process called Wet Plate Collodion. Wet Plate Collodion was the main method of photography between 1851 and around 1870. It involves flowing a sticky substance called collodion over either a piece of tin or glass, which is then sensitised in silver nitrate. The plate is then exposed, developed, fixed and then protected with a lavender varnish. With the addition of a select few period dress adornments, prepare to be amazed as an image of yourself from days gone by appears on the tin from negative to positive.
