JOHN TAMS & BARRY COOPE YOLA CARTER Yola Carter was raised on gospel and is greatly in-demand singer and writer on the electronic dance scene. However, country and soul from the likes of The Band, Gillian Welch, Gene Clark, Emmylou Harris, Otis Redding and Dolly Parton has always been her true passion. In early 2016 she embarked on the latest chapter of her career as a solo Americana artist. FRIDAY 21 JULY 1.40PM – LITTLE LIGHTS STAGE

John Tams has, for over forty years, been at the forefront of taking folk music into stage and screen - Larkrise to Candleford - The York Mysteries, and most recently War Horse. He’s also known for screen appearances such as playing Rifleman Daniel Hagman opposite Sean Bean in the Sharpe television series. Barry Coope, part of the iconic Coope, Boyes and Simpson a’cappella trio is one of the most highly regarded singers of his generation. RUTH JONES – AN AUDIENCE WITH KATE RUSBY Welsh heroine Ruth, has created and starred in many incredibly successful TV shows including GAVIN AND STACEY- BBC (with James Cordon) and the hilarious STELLA- Sky 1. Kate first met Ruth on the set of the 2002 film Heartlands, which starred Michael Sheen, Mark Addy and of course the wonderful Ruth Jones. Kate’s Music was used extensively in the film and she even had a cameo appearance as the ‘turn’ in the pub folk club scene. Being mutual fans of each other’s work, Ruth and Kate quickly struck up a friendship and have remained buddies ever since.

06

Armed with her warm Welsh wit, Ruth will be hosting 'An Audience With Kate Rusby' full of chat, music, and insights into 25 years of Kate touring the world. This is your chance to ask those questions if there is anything you've always wondered but never had the chance to ask, bring along your questions and we'll try and fit it in!! LOUIS LOUIS LOUIS

TONY FURTADO

A big favourite amongst the juke-joints of Leeds, Louis Louis Louis lay down a happening mix of classic jump blues, rocksteady and ska with thumpin' slap bass, honkin' horns, raucous four-part vocal harmonies and a driving piano boogie. Influenced by the legendary sounds of Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima and Louis Jordan... maybe even King Louis?!

Very few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo (two-time National Banjo champion), cello-banjo, slide guitar, and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story). All the music of America is in Tony’s music.

NEWTON FAULKNER 2015 saw Newton Faulkner release his most audacious album to date, ‘Human Love’ is a colourful statement of intent. His fifth studio recording is an alluring maelstrom of rhythm and harmony. Embracing racing drums, African percussion, chanted choruses, ambient interludes and the most imposing hooks that dig in deep. Whether Human Love will make the singer any easier to pin down is another matter. He has been his own man ever since he picked up his first guitar at 13 and began playing along to his parents collection of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, CSNY and Bert Jansch records. With a new record in the pipeline we can’t wait to hear what Newton has in store for us next. Always an incredibly engaging live performer & exceptional musician Newton’s set at Underneath the Stars is bound to be a festival highlight for many years to come. BEN SAVAGE & HANNAH SANDERS A & E OLD TIME STRING BAND A&E are Andy ‘Accident’ Quelch and Emily ‘Emergency’ Smith. Andy’s signature rhythm playing gives a fresh vibrancy to Oldtime fiddle tunes and Emily finds a good home for her spirited country fiddle chops in Western Swing favourites. Between them, they play Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, Oldtime Clawhammer Banjo, as well as singing up some sweet harmonies.

Huddled round a single microphone, singing intimate duets with just mountain dulcimer, dobro and guitar Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are a folk duo that look & sound classically timeless, yet feel refreshingly unique. Fleetingly, they may evoke a memory of Gram & Emmylou, Shirley & Davey, or Gillian & David but their warm distilling of influences from both sides of the big pond produces a refined sound that is decidedly their own. JESCA HOOP Jesca Hoop has lived all over the map, and her rich life experience is reflected in her distinctive voice and natural gift for inventive song craft. Hoop learned to sing at an early age, harmonising with her musical Mormon family in northern California. She began writing highly idiosyncratic songs at the age of 14 to keep her company on her long walks to school. Jesca has quite the collection of fans in high places: Tom Waits described her music as being "like a four sided coin. She is an old soul, like a black pearl, a good witch or red moon. Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night". Peter Gabriel took her to South America to sing with him, and in recent years she has been hand picked to play as support on tour for Eels, Andrew Bird, Punch Brothers and Elbow. Often hailed as India’s biggest cultural & musical export, Raghu's music truly transcends age and genre, having played concerts to over 100,000 people in Karnataka, being featured on BBC's Later .. with Jools Holland, and festivals like Glastonbury. A unique, energetic, musical experience, 'The Raghu Dixit Project' is one of the most sought after bands in India at the moment. This hot six-piece hail from Newcastle Upon Tyne and they play their own brand of Western Swing, Blues, Gypsy Jazz and Country, or “North Eastern Swing” as they've coined it. BETWEEN STILLNESS &STORM A large-scale sculptural installation generating audio and visual responses to changing weather conditions, in both daylight and at night. Through analogue and digital equipment such as weather balloons, anemometers and solar panels, harnessed to equipment such as microphones and flip dots, these atmospheric effects are converted to audio visual content. The installation utilises the weather itself as a source of power and operates entirely off-grid. We can’t wait to see it in action!
