Daniel and Angelica live in Oakland, California and love to travel, but they don't get to go other places as often as they would like. They’re both civil rights lawyers and actually met working on a case together. Daniel is a rabid Oakland Raiders fan and Angelica is a karaoke aficionado. Although their interests often diverge, they both really enjoy relaxing, feasting, and exploring new places together. They got married on September 4 in the Bay Area. What did you want for your honeymoon? After planning the world’s best wedding, we knew we’d need some downtime to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Because Angelica likes variety and Daniel likes to take things easy, we knew we needed a place that offered a mix of activities and a lot of relaxation. We also wanted to be able to live it up a bit in luxury, but not break the bank. So good value was very important to us.

“ ” What made you want to go to Bali? We had a couple of friends who had been to Bali and had a great time. It met our needs in terms of offering a range of things to do – from scuba diving to cooking classes to getting pampered – and being relatively affordable. Bali is also far enough away that we knew we wouldn’t be able to head there for a weekend getaway.

So how was it? Awesome, romantic, everything we were looking for. What was your favorite part about your honeymoon? Daniel: In addition to spending so much time with my new wife, I really enjoyed our bike ride with Banyan Tours in the countryside of Ubud and a hike that we took in that area through the Ayang River. These were things we decided to do last minute and felt very off the beaten path. Angelica: The food, the massages, and the scuba diving. The food everywhere was so delicious – very flavorful. We had an amazing private dinner on the beach at the Amankila and even took a cooking class in Ubud to be able to learn how to make some of the dishes ourselves. I loved all the massages we got everywhere that we stayed – the Balinese really know how to pamper people, and are so excited to meet newlyweds. Daniel also surprised me with introductory scuba diving in Northwest Bali off of Menjangan Island – the experience was amazing.

What did you think of each place you stayed? In Kerobokon (southern Bali, near Seminyak), Daniel booked us a stay at the Dewani Villas – a small family-run inn in the middle of rice paddies. The rooms were very traditional and comfortable – we stayed in an upstairs suite with an outdoor shower and amazing thatched roof. It has a lovely pool and a delicious breakfast. The first night we were unexpectedly upgraded to a private villa with Novus Bali Villas in Kerobokon. The suite was beautiful and great for relaxing after a 20-hour flight. We had breakfast right by our own private pool.

In Pemuteran (northwest Bali) we stayed at the Matahari Resort, which is a five-star resort. It was a little bit over the top in terms of the decor, but the amenities were beautiful, especially the spa. We got massages both at the spa and by the ocean that were just heavenly. Our suite had both an indoor and outdoor shower – and the shower head was shaped like a stone dragon. We also really enjoyed the buffet at the beachside restaurant on our last night there. The service was terrific.

In Ubud, we stayed in a private villa at the Komaneka Tanggayuda for five nights. This was by far our favorite place. The service was great – everyone learns your name – and we just loved the architecture of the villa (which was all windowed walls) overlooking a small infinity pool with a view of the rice terraces. Every morning we had breakfast in our private bale (small hut) by our pool. We also really enjoyed the free tea and Balinese snacks every afternoon. The spa services here were great as well – loved the soaking tub carved from volcanic rock. Finally, in the town of Manggis (east Bali), we stayed at the Amankila Resort for three nights. This place was our biggest splurge. The resort is situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean. It was tastefully luxurious in every way. While we were there, we just relaxed in a cabana by the pool for three days straight. We had a romantic dinner on their private beach – it was a truly memorable feast. We would highly recommend it to other couples. We did have one sleepless night when we were tortured by a very noisy gecko, but the hotel took care of the problem when we complained. What did you think of each area you stayed in? We stayed in South Bali first, not too far from Seminyak. We thought it had some really nice looking beaches and a variety of things to do, but we just spent three nights there and thought that it might have been a little too touristy for us to stay the whole time. Then we hired a driver to bring us up to northwest Bali and stayed in Pemuteran. We did two days of diving and were really blown away by the beauty of the reef and the sea life. The rest of the time we spent at our resort. Next, we headed to Ubud, in the mountains. We really enjoyed our stay here – even though it’s not near a beach – there was just so much to do. We visited the monkey forest, took cooking classes, did a cycling tour, and had some incredible food and the restaurants there. We really found it to be the most dynamic city we stayed in. Finally, we relaxed before heading home in Manggis, where the Amankila is – it’s just a few miles from Candidasa, where we headed for dinner one night. The snorkeling we did there was pretty good although not as spectacular as in the northwest.

What advice would you give others who want to go to Bali for their honeymoon? Go! It was such an amazing place for a honeymoon. The Balinese people are so welcoming and excited to meet newlyweds. The island is rich with culture and beauty. The food is so tasty. The massages are heavenly. And there are so many great places to stay and things to do. While the airfare is a major cost, it’s definitely possible to find lovely accommodations for a very reasonable price.

The décor was fun, festive, and colorful. Soft, subtle colors that contrasted with bright, bold colors were a constant theme in the evening’s decor. Anna made over 100 ft. of flags that hung around the edges of the tent, while yellow, orange, turquoise, pink, and white streamers ran across the ceiling. The tables were set with white linens and contrasted by bright flower arrangements made up of dahlias, garden roses, peonies, sweet peas, and cow’s parsley. Modern vases were mixed with vintage ones that were found in flea markets a ro u n d Swe d e n . At any good party in Sweden a late-night snack is served, so around 12:30AM guests were served traditional Swedish gubbrรถra, crispbread, and a selection of cheeses. This usually keeps the party going for a few more hours. Apparently there was an after party at the summerhouse that involved swimming, but that was after we had left!

THE TRADITIONS Anna and Israel’s wedding was full of Swedish traditions and served as highlights for the guests as well as the bride and groom. During the first course, which was planned as a Swedish crayfish party, a singing men’s choir appeared and began serving the guests snaps while singing traditional Swedish snaps songs. Every ten minutes they would reappear singing another song and serve more snaps. At the end of the first course they concluded by singing a Swedish love song to Anna and Israel. According to Swedish wedding tradition, all female guests must get in line to kiss the groom when the bride goes to the bathroom and vice versa. While Anna was in the bathroom a few hairy “women” (men) got in line to kiss Israel! Throughout the reception guests clinked their glasses several times during the dinner for Israel and Anna to stand up and kiss on the chairs, another Swedish wedding tradition. If you are still confused, curious, and wondering who the heck the Mustache Mafia is after watching that video, we understand because we don’t think they even know what or who they are. All we do know is they are a group of men that can sure grill up some awesome food when they are not taking great photos, creating art, and building or designing amazing furniture. We asked for a couple tips from the Mustache Mafia men for our grooms and we ended up with that video. We should have known better. Haha. When I asked them again, they came up with these.

5 TIPS FOR A GROOM FR O M

1

THE

MUSTACHE

MAFIA

Always trim the facial hair. The only way your bride will let you get a way with the stache is if it is well groomed.

2

Accessorize the stache. You must represent the mafia with style. Whether it’s a bowtie, a skinny tie, suspenders, or an ascot, the mafia screams fashion sense.

3 Tools + reclaimed wood = awesome. Make something for your wedding day. Get involved! 4 5

Get your groomsmen put on a dropkick murphy’s song and sing until you lose your voice.

Most importantly, a groom with a mustache mafia attitude oozes chivalry. We strive to bring it back to the 2000’s. Open doors always, stand up when a lady enters a room, and most importantly, if you see a pretty lady walking down the street be sure to tip your hat to her.

*

Extra points... Make sure you have good U T T E Rbeer! LY E N G AG E D | 37

Guests were greeted with jazz lounge beats and custom cocktails such as the Finest Hour, Highest Maintenance, The Dapper Dandy and Good Day Sir. As they mingled they nibbled on appetizers such as spicy tuna on crunchy rice, white truffle fries, and mini grilled cheese with tomato soup shooters. For the Dapper Dandy of the night and his closest pals, we created a long striking setting with white Lucite topped tables and lined them with plush sky blue, dove gray and chocolate brown leather love seats and dark wood backed chairs for an eclectic and comfortable look.

After the guests were seated they were treated to a trio of salads, cucumber timbale, filet mignon, halibut and vegetarian ravioli. As guests danced to the international beats spun by the DJ they had no idea of the surprise that lay ahead. From behind the stage international R&B star Iyaz appeared for a special performance for these lucky guests. They mingled and danced into the night under the stars on the rooftop and enjoyed the special night not soon to be forgotten. Before guests parted they were treated to a gourmet cookie and coffee station with gift boxes and cups featuring “cookies to go” and “coffee to go” to send them on their way home. Please tell me a little bit about your business.

We are Joan and Fàtima, we have a small floral decoration company in Barcelona with a dream: express all our creative needs with the flowers. When did you start doing floral design?

Our little company was founded 2 years ago. Actually not long ago that we are dedicated to floral design, but we always had creative needs and we have chosen to do with flowers. What do you love most about weddings? Working with flowers?

The reaction of the bride when she’s sees her bouquet, the decoration ... messages of joy that we receive after a wedding or event, that’s what really motivates us. What are you inspired by?

Fàtima: fabrics, feelings, words, fashion, color palettes. Joan: SCI-FI, modern, seabed elements and different textures. If someone wanted to do their own florals on their wedding day what’s your advice?

Do something very simple, with a beautiful flowers, sometimes with a single variety of flowers, in charming vases, adding details such as fabrics. The details are essential. What do you hope for the people who encounter your floral designs?

We hope that they will like it, they are thrilled by it, they are inspired it, and if its for them, we hope that we’ve made their creative, floral vision a reality. 56

During their trip to Hawaii for a friend’s wedding, Giang had a hunch that Bill would propose sometime during their trip. One night Bill told her, “I’m tired of being your boyfriend. Will you marry me?” Says Giang, “He sure surprised me! After he told me he was tired of being my boyfriend I thought he was breaking up with me! Instead, it was a new beginning.”

ins piration Bill and Giang were married in a traditional Vietnamese and Chinese ceremony in December 2009. Giang wanted to fuse Asian and winter themes and quickly came up with a beautiful color palette of red (for luck and love), pink (because she loves pink) and silver (although gold is commonly used in Asian weddings, she thought silver was more appropriate for their winter theme).

The ring ceremony started at Giang’s parents’ house and then moved to Bill’s parents’ house for another tea ceremony to symbolically welcome the bride’s family. the rece ption The reception took place at the Westminster Rose Center. Since it was December, the reception site had decorated Christmas trees all over the property, adding to her wintry theme. Each table centerpiece varied in some way. In general, there were three designs but all of them consisted of a vase with red and silver Christmas ornaments and a tea light. Giang made 3sided table numbers that displayed the table number, menu, thank you list, and games. The dessert table was decorated with old childhood photos of Giang and Bill. Instead of a traditional bouquet toss, Giang and Bill had all of the married couples dance; the couple who had been married the longest received her bouquet after they gave Giang and Bill marital advice.

wedding day?

It was a perfect day that had everything we could hope for: good mood, white flowers, lots of candles, amazing music and a loving atmosphere. It was actually a representation of who we are as a couple and in life and we are really proud that it turned out like that. Also, we always wanted a small wedding and did not compromise on that, so, it actually ended up being a party for us and our closest family and friends. It was OUR day and we couldn’t be happier..

Everything was chosen by the both of us together and we managed to input a little bit of us in all the dÊcor choices we’ve made. ANY COMPLICATIONS OR COMPROMISES ON THE WAY WHEN BUILDING your love

nest?

Our biggest complication was the lack of time to manage our daily work, the moving in together, the quest for the perfect decoration pieces and the preparation of our wedding, all at the same time. It was a bit difficult to make it all work, especially because Pedro was working abroad for a few times during this period, so we still haven’t had the time to personalize our home as much as we want to. However, concerning the mix and matching of our things, we didn’t have to compromise that much because we were just happy to have the most of each other in it. 1 1

Everywhere the couples goes, they buy a pencil and have a big collection on their home office.

your home.

We believe our home is relaxing, simple and functional. Trying to make the best out of the natural sunlight, we’ve chosen minimal furniture and an “ice-cream color” palette that we find soothing and lighthearted. Also, we tried to use some unique pieces of furniture and matched it with our own collectibles. In the end, we think it fells really warm and cozy and it is a perfect backdrop to spending time together.

WHAT’S THE favorite PART OF your house AND WHY? Our favorite part of the house is the living room. It is special for us because it has a soothing atmosphere and gathers all the things we love about our home: our travelling books, our movies, memories from the journeys we took and, our favorite, a balcony where we enjoy the ocean view and share sunsets. This is the room where we spend most of our time together, work and have our family and friends over, making them feel home as well.

Eugenia Chung of Petit Plume always thought that a career in art therapy would be the perfect way to combine her love of art and helping people through art. But when she wasn’t accepted into an art therapy program her dreams were crushed. She was sure that art therapy was the only way to combine her two passions. While Eugenia took time to figure out her next path she began making hair accessories that she sold to friends and family. What began as an outlet for her to take inspiration from the different styles of people around her and experiment with various materials soon became a full-fledged business. Soon Eugenia was selling her Petit Plume pieces on Etsy, at craft fairs, and local boutiques. After her first year of business Eugenia felt the need to do more than just make accessories for the sole purpose of fashion. She wanted Petit Plume to be a business that made a difference and inspired others to give back to the world around them. Eugenia was inspired by a quote that continued to replay in her head, “You came into this world with nothing and will leave with nothing.

THE

typical B A C H E L O R E T T E PA R T Y As a bachelorette party planner, one of the most common questions we get is what our most popular activity is. The answer might surprise you! The typical vision of a bachelorette party is going out on the town, hanging out the sunroof of a limo, and drinking from naughty-shaped straws. We do get requests for these activities, but if you look at the two activities we book the most, you’d find pole dancing and shooting guns at the top of the list. Guns and Girls are definitely not your typical night on the town. If only we could find a way to combine the pole lesson and shooting at the same time, we’d have the ultimate bachelorette activity. We could call it “Precarious Poles” or “Pole the Trigger”. In the interest of public safety, we’ll file that under “Not the Greatest Idea”.
