As we enter another new year, we invited brides, grooms, wedding professionals and our friends and family to the Utterly Engaged 2nd Annual New Year Party to rise and shine to 2011. The theme Snap. Crackle. Pop! inspired us to start the new year with a poppin’ good time.

The modern and highly-polished Avia Hotel in Long Beach was the perfect setting for the party, with indoor reception areas and an outdoor hardwood deck courtyard complete with fire pit, where guests can mix and mingle.

The chefs at Avia created breakfast-inspired hors d’oeuvres, such as Salmon Canapés, Neapolitan Pancakes, Bacon Maple French Toast, and South Western Tostada, especially for the party.

With a full cast of amazing vendors sponsoring the event, the party guests were in for a treat. Dough a Deer served their specialty mini donuts and milk shots, Honey Bee Sweeterie had a full array of mini cupcakes, cake pops brownies, and chocolate-covered pretzel sticks, and Sweet Lucie’s scooped up organic ice cream with the debut of their new cereal flavors.

To set the tone for the New Year, we dedicated a wall for Note to Self, sponsored by Envelopments, where guests can write on postcards a little note to their future self and put them in the envelopes on the wall. When 2012 rolls around, they will get a little surprise in the mail when they receive these postcards from their past.

They appreciate great style but never take themselves too seriously.

From the very beginning stages of their planning Courtney and Brian knew that they wanted their wedding to be bright, modern and colorful.

Their invitations were made up of a story book that Courtney and Brian wrote and designed together to tell the story of their relationship. There were 5 parts to the book.

Each part had a story of a particular stage in their relationship along with a postcard-like illustration to go along with it. The entire invitation was put in a folder that contained all of the the invitation, RSVP and info card set.

The story booklet was stitched in, to make it a perfectly compact and a keepsake for their family and friends.

For an extra dose o f f u n t h ey designed a whole slew o f b u t to n s that sat in a dish at

Courtney and Brian loved the idea of making the g u e st b o o k more of a conversation. They created small guest books using simple black sketchbooks w i t h b l a n k p a g e s , p l a c i n g q u e s t i o n p ro m p t s on each cover. Not only did guest enjoy writing in t h e b o o k s, but Courtney and Brian ended up w i t h f u n a nd creative answers.

Ke e p i n g i n mind that the majority of their g u e st s we re traveling in to their wedding, t h ey d e c i ded to make each of them a set o f p o stc a rds. Each favor contained a pack o f f i ve p ostcards, each featuring a lyric f ro m a s o ng about New York. They wrapped t h e p a c k of postcards in a yellow bakery bag and sealed it with a navy and w h i t e striped ribbon and custom tag.

Courtney created flags for the cupcakes with fun sayi ngs. She used a zig-zag punch to cut them out and attached them to toothpicks with clear stickers on the back. She also created illustrations of each flavor so that guests could tell which they were choosing.

Not only were the cupcakes delicious, but the cupcake flags were a fun piece of eye candy.

So when it comes to their wedding, they wanted it to be intimate and special. Being the nature lovers that they are, the venue was extremely important to them. Derek proposed to Charmaine at the top of Angels landing in Zion, so their wedding location had to top that.

And they found their perfect place – Paion, a private residence in Big Sur. It overlooks the ocean and is surrounded by nature.

They booked all the cabins along the river at Ripplewood Inn for the weekend and invited 30 of their closest family and friends.

PRE-WEDDIN G HAL LOWEEN’S EVE / REH EAR SAL When the guests arrived on Friday, they were greeted with tote bags filled with goodies in their cabin. They spent Saturday morning on a hike to the beach and in the afternoon the girls and groomsman went to Ventana Inn for lunch and spa massages.

Since it was a Halloween weekend, everyone got dressed up in costume in the evening and the kids went trick or treating to all the cabins before the costume rehearsal dinner.

(HERE’S WHAT YOU DO)

1. Hold the cup horizontally, making sure the seam of the cup is facing towards the back.

Then place a small drop of hot glue on the inside lower lip. Take a second cup, place it upside-down on the table, make sure the seam is facing the back, and place a drop of hot glue along the bottom right edge. Quickly place the second cup inside the first before the glue hardens. Leave about an inch between the lips of each cup. *See diagram here.

2. Repeat step one until a full circle of cups has formed. For the final cup and to complete the circle, once glue is in place, gently squeeze the cup into place and let glue harden.

1. 4 oz. Paper Cups 2. Miniature Plants 3. Fabric 4. Ribbon 5. Pinking Shears Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks (not pictured)

B. DIRECTIONS

(HERE’S WHAT YOU DO) 1. Begin by cutting fabric into 7” squares. Create a decorative edge with pinking sears or a scalloped rotary cutter.

2. With the right side of the fabric facing down, place the paper cup directly in the center of the fabric swatch. Place four drops of hot glue evenly spaced along the bottom edge of the cup. Quickly pull fabric up and glue into place on all four sides.

4. Finnish off by simply placing plant directly into paper cup or transfer from pot directly into paper cup.

(HERE’S WHAT YOU DO) 1. Download the Paper Cup Wrap Template and use as either a template or print directly onto decorative paper. Using scissors or a craft knife, cut out template along solid line.

2. Wrap around cup and stick with double sided tape.

3. Fold bottom edge of paper over the edge of the cup to get a clean and finished look.

4. Fill cups with bags of hot cocoa and marshmallows tied with ribbon and adorn with a wooden spoon for stirring!

INSPIRATION

Texture & Patterns

“

I love the textures and patterns of maps. It comes from my passion for travel.

Nothing makes me happier than exploring the backstreets and secret local haunts of a city. And although I would rather get lost than pull out a map, I have found other uses for all that paper I collect from my travels. My inspiration for this project comes from one of my favorite places in the world: New York City. Having lived there for 5 years, I traveled up and down the borough of Manhattan, down and around Brooklyn and across Long Island on the NYC subway countless times. The bright colors of the 1 and 9 line, the BDFQ and the NR trains are symbolic graphics that will be forever stuck in my visual memory. Ok, so for me NYC is the most romantic city in the world...What better way to meet a future loved one than riding through the historic tunnels of the iconic city?

A. MATERIALS (WHAT YOU’LL NEED): 1. coaster for a template (snag one from a bar) 2. map or printed map on paper 3. craft glue

4. pencil 5. scissors or exacto knife 6. cardboard or cork sheet

B. DIRECTIONS

(HERE’S WHAT YOU DO) 1. Using your coaster as a template, simply trace the circle shape onto your map paper and sturdy backing.

(You may want to have these prints laminated so your map artwork won’t bleed from the drinks.)

2. Trim your shapes from the paper and the sturdy backing.

3. Glue your map to the sturdy backing with craft glue.

4. Wait for them to cure and dry.

5. Set a tasty libation atop and delight in yourself.

my name is Samantha of Primary Petals i’ve been doing it for for pver 2 years i’m good at floral design, wedding and event styling, color

scheming, and working with seasonal flowers. my work environment is also my home. I work out of my loft,

which is a block away from the Los Angeles Flower District.

It is a colorful and lively studio that I have created for myself and a great place to develop new ideas and designs. my work is inspired by color, seasonality of materials, graphic

design, architecture, fashion, and movies (I watch movies that fit the theme and style of the events I am working on). my biggest accomplishment is starting my own business! It took

some courage to put myself out into the wedding industry as crafty floral designer, but the hard work has paid off.

I am so blessed with the creative and beautiful clients and brides I get to work with every day. my worst fear is is loosing my husband and business partner

mischief, which has landed us in the emergency room quite a few times. However, he adventurous spirit is why I love him as well. if i have all the money in the world, i would travel and visit my family

members who are located all over the US . i believe in providing my customers with affordable, seasonal,

beautiful floristry in the greenest manner possible. This is why I walk to and from the Los Angeles Flower District to obtain my supplies every day and try to use seasonal and locally grown flowers. Supporting local farmers and markets is a value James and I hold as the highest of values, and it results in beautiful and inventive design.

ian and Larissa AUGUST 8, 2010 Ian and Larissa met during the fall semester of their junior year in college in 2005 and began dating in November of that year.

After ten months of dating Ian was ring shopping and both he and Larissa had talked to their parents about getting married. They couldn’t wait to become husband and wife, but life had different plans for them.

In September of 2006 Ian was in a car accident and suffered traumatic brain injury. He fought through a 7-month hospital stay, seizures, various setbacks and daily therapy. Throughout the past four years Larissa has continued to love Ian unconditionally and walk beside him on his difficult journey.

FROM KAYLEIGH’S PARENTS, KELLY AND RICHARD WINCE We would like to express our deepest g ratitude to the vendors and volunteers who came forward to g ive our daughter, Kayleigh Wince, the wedding of her dreams on Feb. 21. A few months ago, my son-in-law, Brian Nabili, was diag nosed with terminal cancer. Meghan Ely, President of OFD Consulting, heard about their situation and the small wedding they were planning, and she quickly sent out word. The Richmond wedding community came together like I have never seen any community do before. Without batting an eye, everyone came together and donated their time and talents. Within three weeks, they helped pull off the wedding of my daughter’s dreams. There are no words to express how g rateful we are and the love that we feel for those who came forward and helped us out.
