FROM THE EDITOR The Times, They Are A Changin’

January/February 2021 Edition

BY LANCE SCHWARTZ

A

s I sit down tonight to ink this letter, I can’t help but reflect on what a mad, mad world we live in. Sure, the big news is that we’re still in the middle of a worldwide pandemic that has somehow lasted almost ten months at this point. The raw, harsh reality is, we don’t know how or when it will all end. We just know it will...eventually. Yet somehow, the sun manages to come up each new morning and we all continue to suck it up and put one foot in front of the other. Our situation has caused so many changes that will last a lifetime. Some good. Some bad. Some downright difficult, But one thing we know for sure is that these changes will bring positive changes all across our lives. Speaking of changes...have you all been paying attention to what’s going on in the electric vehicle market? I’m continually blown away that you can buy a Tesla Model S that will accelerate from 0-60mph in 2.4 seconds after hauling your family of 5 home from the grocery store with $300 worth of groceries in the trunk. I’ve been watching a documentary on Apple TV+ called Long Way Up, where

6 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ride electric Harley Davidson Livewire motorcycles over 13,000 miles from the southern tip of Argentina to Los Angeles, with a convoy of Rivian R1T trucks in the mix. And just this week, GMC announced the electric GMC Hummer EV with factory 35” tires, 1000hp, and 11,500 ft lbs of torque! While we’re on the topic of electric vehicles, we also have a preview in this issue of Volcon’s newly announced electric Stag and Beast UTV’s that, among other things, are capable of being driven completely submerged underwater. You can either love or hate the idea of electric off-road vehicles, but you can’t deny that they’re beginning to make a giant splash in all segments of the transportation industry. With nearly silent operation and an instantaneous torque curve that could make Coal Rollin’ Diesel lovers pucker, it gets harder and harder to argue that electric isn’t evolving right in front of our eyes. Even better, with 2022 bringing what is rumored to be an all-electric Ford F150, I think Bob Dylan said it best. The Times, They Are A Changin’!

The Next Generation of Yamaha’s Recreation-Focused UTVs STORY: CODY HOOPER PHOTOS: ADAM CAMPBELL PHOTOGRAPHY

2021 YAMAHA WOLVERINE RMAX2 1000 XT-R

I

’ll never forget the first time I saw a Yamaha UTV in the wild – it was 2004, and the legendary Rhino 660 had just hit the market. My father and I were riding dirt bikes up in the hills in Gorman, California, having a break on the side of the trail. A middle-aged man clad in street clothes and an open-face motorcycle helmet came flying past us on the trail at what appeared to be an extreme rate of speed for the utility cart he was driving. Pardon my description, but before this, all we had seen in these hills as far as UTVs go were Mules, Rangers, and other yard equipment. This thing was going triple the speed any of those tractors could manage, and the driver had an ear-toear grin as he passed us. We geared back up hastily and chased him down, finally cornering him for a little Q&A about his mystery machine. Little did we know at that time just how big the UTV movement would become, and how important that Rhino would be in shaping its future. While Yamaha’s Rhino nameplate was unfortunately discontinued years back, the Viking and Wolverine have carried the torch well. The Rhino’s ethos was simple: do everything a UTV can do, do it well, and make it fun for the driver. With the introduction of the Wolverine RMAX2, Yamaha has again set their sights at delivering that experience, with two new UTVs based on the Wolverine platform. The RMAX2 and RMAX4 share a new, highoutput 1000cc parallel twin engine and bespoke suspension. We joke that the “R” in RMAX stands for Rhino (Yamaha won’t confirm), but the bottom line is this: Yamaha has big shoes to fill here, as not only does the RMAX carry Yamaha into the next generation of sport/utility UTVs, but it also has some very stiff competition!

UTV REVIEW

ENGINE

Like the Wolverine 850, the RMAX also gets its motivation from a parallel twin-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. The engines share some design elements, but are worlds apart in terms of how they’re built. The RMAX engine uses a shorter stroke than the Wolverine 850, but a much larger bore. The Wolverine RMAX 1000’s engine produces around 40 more horsepower than the 850, and utilizes Yamaha’s all-new Ultramatic transmission. The engine is strong, snappy, and perfectly happy hauling the RMAX around at speed. The RMAX2 and RMAX4 also have Yamaha D-Mode throttle control, which is an adjustable ECU mapping program that affects how the vehicle responds to throttle inputs. It also changes the way power is fed in, creating very differentfeeling profiles for each of its three modes. We saw 71 MPH in dirt, a healthy top speed and plenty for the sport/ute segment. Others have claimed even higher. Yamaha gave the RMAX a massive power jump from the Wolverine 850, and it is much appreciated out on the trail!

TRANSMISSION/ DRIVETRAIN

Yamaha’s newest iteration of the Ultramatic CVT transmission uses much beefier parts than the smaller Wolverine X2/X4 does. The clutches themselves are dimensionally larger and feature upgraded sheaves, tuning, and bracing for longer life with the RMAX’s uprated power output. Yamaha is proud of the design achievements they have made with the Ultramatic transmission, and are now offering the industry’s ONLY 10-year-belt warranty. It applies to all Assembled in the USA 2019 & UP models with the Ultramatic transmission. To see if your UTV is on the list, visit this link. The Wolverine RMAX features on-demand 4WD and a full diff-lock mode for when you really need it. As with all other Yamaha products, the 14 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

driveline is tight, strong, and works when you need it to. No fancy electronic wizardry here – just good ol’ fashioned 4WD!

SUSPENSION

Starting with a form of the base Wolverine’s frame, Yamaha added the bracing and support necessary to cope with the increase in power, speed, tire size, weight, suspension travel, and velocity. The Wolverine 850’s trail-duty suspension was ditched in favor of a much more substantial package. All-new suspension components were designed and tested, so this isn’t just a Wolverine 850 with a long-travel kit! Up front, the double-wishbone suspension produces a healthy 14.2 inches of travel, right on par with best-in class and only a couple inches shy of most pure-sport UTV units. They are linked by an anti-sway bar, and controlled by Fox 2.0” Podium QS3 shocks. We appreciate the easy adjustment of the QS3 shocks, and they work well for the intended audience here. If you’re the type that prefers clickers, there are a ton of aftermarket suspension shops that offer solutions for you. Regardless, the suspension is excellently tuned, with light spring rates to keep the ride plush and enough valving to keep it from bottoming. The rear suspension again employs an independent, double wishbone design, but it cycles a very long 16.9 inches of wheel travel. This is nearly 3 inches more suspension travel than the Polaris General XP 1000, which is the RMAX2’s closest rival. It’s also 7.6 inches more suspension travel than the Wolverine 850 X2, the vehicle it shares its core DNA with. Yamaha chose not to utilize a rear swaybar on the RMAX2, leaving room for the aftermarket to offer upgrades for owners who may add weight to their rigs. In stock trim, the RMAX2 handles very well.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

Base model Wolverine RMAX models ride on 30x10-14 GBC Dirt Commander 2.0 tires, not a bad choice for an OEM tire. Checking the box

UTV REVIEW

for the XT-R model gets you bronze wheels and Maxxis Carnivore tires. While they’re the same size as the Dirt Commanders, the Carnivores are better suited for the muddy, rocky, slick terrain that the Wolverine RMAX was really made for. Sadly, the XT-R does not get beadlock wheels, although they do resemble a beadlock from afar. Brakes are strong and have good pedal feel, with 255mm rotors up front and 244.5mm rotors in the rear. All four corners have dual-piston calipers and stainless steel braided brake lines for optimal pedal feel and braking performance.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The Wolverine RMAX models get a significant facelift from the Wolverine 850 X2 and X4 models also on sale. They are so visually different, in fact, that Yamaha could have dropped “Wolverine” from the RMAX’s name completely and no one would have questioned it. A taller hood features an almost-sealed compartment that houses all of the relays, electronic access 16 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

for switches and accessories, the battery, the airbox, and more. It stays relatively clean, even in heavy mud. Kudos to Yamaha for that. In typical Yamaha fashion, all of the interior and exterior pieces are finished very nicely and bolt together extremely well. Fit & finish is a Yamaha hallmark – the RMAX even features padded areas where a rider’s knees make contact with the interior trim. The permanent side bolsters may be a little cramped for riders on the larger side, but they add a layer of security and protection that even a window net can’t offer. The seats in the RMAX are wonderfully bolstered without being too difficult to get in and out of, and the ergonomics of the interior are spot-on. The tilt steering wheel and beefy passenger grab bar feel high-quality and strong. The dash on lower-trim models features a lidded compartment on the center stack, where on the XT-R and up trims you get a dash-mounted Yamaha Adventure Pro tablet. The Adventure Pro is a fully-functional tablet that comes pre-

2021 YAMAHA WOLVERINE RMAX2 1000 XT-R

stocked with vehicle diagnostic readouts, adjustable gauges, GPS capability, custom trail mapping and sharing, and much more. It’s a wonderful system that we spend a lot of time with in other Yamaha models. The exterior trim of the new Wolverine RMAX is aggressive, with a sporty look made much more real by the massive suspension and tire combo that Yamaha stuffed under the fenders. LED marker lights and separate low/high beam LED assemblies offer much better lighting than any other Yamaha UTV on the market. We hope to see a system like this on next year’s YXZ! The RMAX2’s tilting dump bed can hold up to 600 pounds, matching the General for bestin-class. The dump bed tilt mechanism functions well and is easy to operate, even when the machine is loaded down. The cargo box is also fairly massive, and includes molded channels for separators to keep your gear secure. Multiple tie-down locations make strapping things in easy, and Yamaha also offers some accessory

bed gear for even more storage.

IMPRESSIONS

With the Rhino and Wolverine X2 comparisons out of the way, let’s get right to it: the RMAX2 is a flat-out performer. From the moment you stab the throttle for the first time, the evolutionary leap from Yamaha’s previous platforms is immediately noticeable. The RMAX produces big grunt down low, and the power grows the longer you hold your foot in it. The 1000cc parallel twin produces a very linear power curve with lots of meat in the middle, which is where the RMAX really spends most of its time. Transmission performance is on par with perfect as well. When matted from a dead stop, the Wolverine grunts for about a half-second and then roars in RPM, immediately settling into its clutching engine speed and putting its 100+ horsepower to the ground in a hurry. Yamaha’s Ultramatic is smooth, doesn’t slip, and provides real engine braking that is useful in the dirt. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 17

UTV REVIEW

2021 YAMAHA WOLVERINE RMAX2 1000 XT-R

Yamaha didn’t cut any corners with the RMAX’s suspension, and it is one of the defining characteristics of this vehicle. It truly delivers the ride compliance of a long-travel sport UTV in most scenarios, but can still back up to a trailer and tow 2,000 lbs. A lot of time went in to tuning this chassis, and it is noticeable. While the RMAX does dive and squat a lot, it does so with poise, letting you get a real feel for the momentum of the car and how much traction you have left. It speaks to the driver well in fast-paced situations, although the steering is a bit overboosted and numb at speed. This is the first Yamaha UTV besides the YXZ to have a top speed above the 50 mph range, and the RMAX handles it well. The built-in winch and

18 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

other convenience features are icing on the cake here, only making the RMAX a more appealing purchase. Sport/Utility UTVs like this one are getting so capable that the lines continue to blur. Our testers loved the RMAX for its capability and comfort, proving that for most UTV owners, one rig can really accomplish a lot. The RMAX is an ideal candidate for anyone who uses their UTV at home or at work for chores, but still wants all of the trail capability a sport UTV offers. It will work as hard as you need it to all week, and carry your cooler and camping gear when it’s time to relax on the weekend. The RMAX is the next generation of Yamaha’s Recreation-focused UTVs, and it is a knockout.

You want parts and accessories that work as hard as you do, so why would you go to anyone but the experts? SuperATV’s extensive collection of innovative, top-quality products are designed with you in mind, and they always ship fast and free.*

CAN-AM X3 PRO TURBO RACE CAR

ARD was born from a Can-Am racer seeking to design products to help them win races and play harder on the weekends. ARD works extensively with experienced engineers, providing quality products designed with integrity and safety in mind. The owner, Mitchell Alsup, strives every day to push the limits in the UTV industry as seen in his most recent Can-Am Pro Turbo racecar. Welded, wired and assembled by Mitchell personally, he understands the importance of quality workmanship, vehicle performance, and vehicle safety. ARD is just getting started and looking forward to expanding their current footprint in the UTV/ Off-Road industry. We caught up with Mitchell and the ARD crew to get the story behind these new turn-key builds. Rumor is that Alsup Racing Development has already sold more than a few of these cars to fellow racers, so expect to see these amazing rigs lining up during the 2021 BITD/SCORE seasons and beyond.

Alsup Racing Development 2021 Can-Am X3 BITD/SCORE Pro Turbo Race Car CHASSIS

The ARD-built 4130 Chromoly chassis is fully tig welded and engineered by Tekk Consulting, providing a safe yet competitive platform. All components are laser cut, notched and CNC bent, and etched with corresponding part numbers for ease of assembly and repair. Factory UTV UHMW skid plates keep the belly pan protected. 42 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

VEHICLE ASSEMBLY

46 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

ARD Turn-Key Can-am race cars are constructed in-house, from welding to wiring to plumbing. Products used during assembly have been proven over years of testing and development by the ARD staff and accompanying partners. All customers are fitted to the vehicle during the vehicle build, including steering angle, pedal adjustment, seat placement and safety harness placement. ARD turn-key race cars go through a final systems test and field test with Mitchell Alsup (owner of ARD) and Chris Blais of Blais Racing Services to ensure customers are receiving the highest quality and most competitive vehicle on the market. From data management set-up, clutch tuning, light adjustment, tire testing, and complete suspension set-up, the vehicle undergoes a true point to point field test prior to entering its first event.

or long-time fans of the UTV industry, names like Wes Miller carry a lot of history. Wes cut his teeth racing ATVs and riding/filming freestyle with his company H-Bomb Films, which produced the awesome “Huevos” film series. He began racing UTVs as far back as 2005, but it wasn’t until 2015 when Wes and Polaris crossed paths. Fast forward to 2017, and the Polaris Factory Racing Bomb Squad RZR XP Turbo started lining up for races with Wes behind the wheel. For more than 30 years, Wes and his Bomb Squad crew have been racking up race wins and championship titles. To date, Wes holds 5 SCORE OffRoad championships and is a multi-time winner of the famed Baja 250, 400 and 500. Most recently, Wes and his crew secured a big win at the 2020 Baja 1000, taking home the win in the Pro Turbo class by over 40 minutes and securing the overall win in the UTV category.

2020 BAJA 1000

There are many parts on this RZR that you can’t see that contribute greatly to its performance and durability. A custom Motec ECU tuned by Johnny’s Custom Motorsports powers the RZR, while SandCraft RCR driveline components like a built front differential, billet carrier bearing, upgraded drive shaft and motor mounts keep the RZR from ending up on the DNF list.

We caught up with Wes for a dive into his Polaris Factory Racing machine and put together a build list. While there are some items on the build sheet that cannot be priced, a lot of what the #2989 car runs down in Baja can be purchased by any average consumer. Racing Baja is expensive, even in the UTV class- a car of this

caliber can cost well over six figures to build. Racing is beneficial for the average consumer even if they don’t partake themselves, as it leads to increased R&D from OEM manufacturers and aftermarket parts companies alike. Stronger machines mean more time on the trail and less time on the trailer! UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 55

RACE BUILD: WES MILLER’S BAJA 1000 WINNING POLARIS RZR XP TURBO

This team trusts RCV Performance with their axle needs, and for good reason. RCV builds some of the strongest driveline parts in the world, and they stand behind their products. You can always tell an RCV axle by its signature orange CV boots. Note that this race RZR also has PRP limit straps bolted to all four corners- this saves shock internals from taking damage during harsh topout situations when the suspension is fully extended. Nighttime visibility is of the utmost importance in Baja, and it proved so during Wes’s 26-hour run to first place at the 2020 Baja 1000. Baja Designs provides the lighting on this RZR, utilizing a pair of 9,500 lumen XL 80 lights behind the front push bar. Baja’s XL lighting range is designed to give the wide-beam performance of an LED light combined with the focused long-range performance of an HID light. Surprisingly, they’re only $399 each!

Wes and his team were the first to cross the line in the Pro Turbo UTV class at the 2020 Baja 1000, locking in the 8th consecutive Baja 1000 win for Polaris Factory Racing.

The Polaris Factory Racing/Bomb Squad Polaris RZR XP Turbo is powered by a Cross Motorsports-built variant of the RZR Pro XP engine and transmission, which feature Polaris’ latest technology. The turbocharger is stock, but the engine has been enhanced with upgraded internals ready for the rigors of racing Baja. RBO S 4 ADVENTURE BUILD Just how close to desert-ready is the Turbo S 4 seater?

STORY: STAFF OF UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE PHOTOS: ADAM CAMPBELL PHOTOGRAPHY

T

he RZR Turbo S and Turbo S 4 seater are two of the best machines to ever roll off of Polaris’ assembly line. With over a decade of experience with current adaptations of the RZR XP platform, Polaris has nearly reached the end of this product’s lifestyle. Newer, next-generation RZR machines are being introduced every day (there’s even one in this issue!), and the newer PRO XP platform is set to eventually replace the aging RZR XP line. The RZR XP Turbo S 4 is Polaris engineers’ version of a built XP turbo. Factory long travel suspension, DYNAMIX adjustable shocks, 32 inch tires, 168 horsepower, and a strengthened frame built to take the abuse. If you’ve ever driven a RZR with an aftermarket long travel kit, it’s like that- only more refined. Factory tuner cars like this are rare, and we are still blown away that Polaris’ accounting department funded the R&D budget for the Turbo S cars. It’s likely that the initial design and R&D work that went into the Turbo S was intended for future products, and that the by-product of all of that testing was the final evolutionary form of the first RZR platform. Either way, we are happy to have one in the stable.

RZR TURBO S 4 Adventure Build

Our 2020 Polaris RZR Turbo S 4 started life as a Dynamix edition in $30,999 trim. This makes the Turbo S 4 Polaris’ second-most expensive UTV on sale to date, right behind the $32,299 RZR PRO XP 4 Ultimate. As a factory-stock unit, the S 4 is likely the best-handling 4 seat UTV on the market, with massive amounts of suspension travel available at all four corners to smooth out the ride. Our goal with the Turbo S 4 was to improve the comfort, carrying capacity, and safety factors without introducing too much added cost- after all, this is one of the most expensive UTVs on the market. As with all of our builds, we started with the 62 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

comfort and safety aspects of the build. It has been commonplace in the UTV industry since the introduction of turbo cars to feel that a stock machine is far too quick and capable for its factory-issued safety equipment. The S 4 is no exception to this rule, so we dialed up UTV Speed INC for a full cage setup. What they sent was a gorgeous radius roll cage complete with a full-length roof rack and glass windshield. The fitment of the parts was great, and the cage gives the S 4 a more elegant appearance while offering a big upgrade in terms of safety. UTV Speed has a ton of cage options for available accessories, so it’s best to give them a call and discuss

your needs over the phone. We added a couple of mounting provisions for a spare tire, Pro Eagle jack, KC Hilites light bar, and more. The glass windshield is definitely a piece you’ll want to option if you ride in cold weather. Any type of wind deflection is great for the cold, but the fullcoverage glass windshield adds a layer of insulation from the elements that does not go unnoticed. UTV Speed’s finish work is great, meaning the windshield bolts on and off quickly and easily. To keep us contained, we turned to Simpson and PRP. We optioned Simpson Vortex UTV seats for the front occupants, leaving the rear two seats stock to

save cost. Simpson helped us color-match the stock seats, so even though they aren’t identical, they match visually and don’t draw your eye to the stock parts in the back. PRP 4.2 harnesses were fitted to the UTV Speed cage crossbars, offering much more support than a stock 3-point seatbelt. Just a small PSA here- if you drive your UTV at high speeds in rough terrain AT ALL, you should be running 4 point harnesses at the very least. PRP’s harnesses and interior bags add much-needed comfort to the RZR’s cockpit. With 168 horsepower and almost 2 feet of suspension travel on tap, you’re bound to use it. Bouncing around in the cab UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 63

RZR TURBO S 4 Adventure Build

of a stock RZR with 3 point seatbelts, stock seats and no interior padding is fun for a short time and a short time only. PRP’s carefully-positioned storage bags are also padded at contact points between your body and the RZR’s, keeping elbows and knees from bruising while you’re racking up miles in rough terrain. To ensure we could keep going when the trail turned rough, we added our own tool kit using Krazy Beaver Tools’ Ridgid toolbox mount. It bolts to an inexpensive “Ridgid” brand tool box available from Home Depot ($39.00) and secures it to the bed of your RZR for an inexpensive toolbox mounting solution. We packed the box full of our own spare garage tools, and included a new Torx driver set as well! We secured a spare belt bag from Dragonfire Racing and filled it with a Gboost Sandstorm drive belt. We have been testing the Gboost drive belts in the harshest of conditions including racing the Baja 500. We personally saw belt temps over 350 degrees F for 40+ miles in race conditions with no belt failures last race- if we can trust the belts in Baja, we can trust them on the trail. HMF Racing has been expanding their product portfolio for a few years now. We optioned a front and rear Defender series bumper set to go with their 4” Performance Series full exhaust, all of which bolted on like factory equipment. HMF’s fit and finish is top-notch, and we couldn’t be happier with the sound and power increase that the exhaust provided. HMF has a ton of options when it comes to exhaust systems, so it’s best to check their website to design your own. Color options abound aplenty, as well as ceramic coating options, different sound levels, canister and tip designs, etc. Following the same footsteps as their performance division, HMF’s hard parts are high-quality, fit well, and offer exceptional durability. Their Defender LT front bumper is one of the slimmest available, adding protection while not sacrificing approach angles. To aid with visibility, we added a Tusk Alloy UTV mirror kit with 5” convex glass. The mirrors bolt to the roll cage with surprisingly simple mounts, and feature a great look and a strong build construction. The anodized black aluminum mirror bodies 64 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

are strong and lightweight. We also optioned a Tusk convex center mirror for added rearward visibility. KC Hilites provided their 39” Gravity LED Pro6 light bar, which features 6 x 20 watt LED emitters in large reflective housings. KC says their G6 LED reflector optics utilize a combination of their “Driving” and “Wide-40” beam patterns for optimal lighting balance and performance. Essentially, this bar offers the throw of an HID light with the flood of a highend LED bar. As an added bonus, it looks absolutely stunning. The 39” bar consumes 120 watts at full power and produces a whopping 13,800 lumens and a claimed beam distance of 1,435 meters (4,708 feet). With nearly a mile of light available, even the RZR Turbo S 4 can’t outrun this bar at full power. We wrapped up the build with a set of gorgeous Raceline Podium 15” A93SG beadlock wheels in stealth grey finish with a black beadlock ring. Raceline beadlock wheels are available in a multitude of sizes, bolt patterns, styles, and colors, so check their website for more options. The A93SG is built with a heavy duty A356 aluminum alloy and a forged 6061 beadlock ring. The beadlock hardware is US-made Grade 8 material for long life. We wrapped the gorgeous Raceline wheels in CST Apache 33x10-15 rubber. The 33” Apache tire is about as tough as they come- a steel-belted, 8-ply radial designed to withstand the rigors of desert racing. Even though our RZR XP Turbo S 4 came stock with 32” tires, the change to 33” steel belted tires on 15” beadlocks added quite a bit of rotational mass. In order to compensate for the added weight of this adventure build, our next step will be to re-tune the factory shocks and clutch setup to regain the performance lost in the build process. We have been racking up miles on our Polaris RZR Turbo S 4 Adventure build rather quickly. Most of our trips have started on the desert floor, and all of them have ended high in elevation, climbing and exploring every mountain pass we can find in the massive Southern California desert. The added comfort and cargo capacity we have baked into this build have allowed us to stay on the trail longer and make easy trailside repairs to other units. The biggest benefit is peace of mind – we know that no matter what the trail throws at us, we are prepared to tackle it. That’s a good feeling, especially when you can do it in complete comfort and style. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 65

2021 VOLCON STAG AND VOLCON BEAST

I

’m an old-school motorhead. I’ll be honest. When I first started reading about Elon Musk and his desire to start an electric car company, I thought it was a joke. I had driven plenty of electric golf carts in the past, so I knew everything I thought I needed to know about electric transportation. Fast forward a number of years later when a friend of mine offered to have me take his brand-new Tesla Model S for a test drive. When he followed up asking if I wanted to try out “LudicrousMode”, I was sure I was being punked. Nope…..wrong again. When I stood on the throttle on that Tesla Model S, I was absolutely blown away. To this day, I’ve never driven anything that accelerated as violently or grabbed as much traction as the Tesla Model S!

UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 69

FIRST LOOK

Building on that electric vehicle technology, there have been several companies who’ve chosen to throw their hat into the ring with an electric off-road vehicle of their own. The most recent is Volcon, who’ve announced two new UTV models that will hit the market soon. The Volcon Stag will be available in the Summer of 2021, with the Volcon Beast arriving in the Spring of 2022.

The Volcon Stag will be the more conservative of the two models, geared more towards the sport-utility side of the market. With Fox suspension and both two and four wheel drive models, this could be a great machine for hunting, or working around the farm.

70 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

The Volcon Beast looks to be a bit more of...well...a beast! Clearly aimed at the sport market, available in configurations with up to 450hp and a range of up to 150 miles, the Fox suspension on the Beast will also be available with Fox Live Valve suspension. Although we don’t have many details on the Volcon machines at this point, the one that makes us most excited is the fact that these machines will be made in the USA! We are following Volcon’s progress very closely and will follow up with more detailed information as it is made available! www.volcon.com

CFMOTO

ZFORCE

950 SPORT High Performance For Under $13K STORY: CODY HOOPER PHOTOS: CHRIS JOHNSON

W

ay back in 1989, a company based in Hangzhou, China started developing small-displacement 4 stroke engines in-house. That company believed in creating its own path, relying on careful engineering and R&D. Over the years, that company would go on to develop close to 100 vehicles for street and off road use, design & produce over 50 different engines, and partner with thousands of companies globally to produce powersports equipment. That company would even strike a deal with KTM to co-produce engines and motorcycle chassis using shared facilities. That company is CFMoto. CFMoto USA is headquartered in Plymouth, Minnesota and relies on a small dealer network to distribute their products. For 2021, CFMoto is offering 7 different UTV models, including the new ZForce 950 Sport. At $12,199, it represents an entry-level UTV in the trail segment. Does CFMoto’s new ZForce 950 have what it takes to compete in a world populated by the top global UTV manufacturers?

74 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2021 CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT ENGINE

CFMoto is no stranger to developing their own engines. Powering the Zforce 950 sport is a V-twin engine with single overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. It features a Bosch EFI system and drive by wire technology, allowing CFMoto to fit the ZForce 950 with a dual-mode throttle switch. “ECO” mode is a smoother, more dampened power curve great for chores, beginner pilots, or very tight trails. “Sport” mode heightens the throttle response and delivers power more aggressively. While the ZForce 950 is only rated at 79 horsepower from the factory, it makes good use of what it has. Low-end grunt is plentiful, with a strong midrange that is sure to excite those in the market for this level of vehicle. The ZForce sounds great as well, utilizing a dual-outlet exhaust that has a good tone to it.

TRANSMISSION/ DRIVETRAIN

The transmission is a two-speed CVT transmission with reverse and a park gear. The shifter feels very high-quality and engages well. Low gear is recommended for trails where your constant speed is less than 15 mph according to CFMoto. We left it in high for most situations, but did try low gear on a few steeper hills. The ZForce had more than enough grunt and traction to pull it up all of the trails in our testing with ease. CVT engagement is smooth and tightly controlled, although it feels like it could use a small amount of fine-tuning in order to extract more performance up top. The ZForce 950 features push-button selectable 2WD and 4WD modes, as well as a locking front differential. It climbs well, but suspension travel holds it back in some very rocky situations. Fuel economy is great, with most fills of the 9-gallon fuel cell averaging between 110140 miles in our testing.

UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 75

UTV REVIEW

SUSPENSION

CFMoto employs dual A-arm suspension up front and a “Quadlink” trailing-arm design in the rear. Even for a narrower 60-inch model, the suspension travel numbers are fairly quaint at 11” up front and just under 12” in the rear. Both ends are controlled by CFMoto-branded piggyback shocks, which are compression and rebound adjustable. Unfortunately, the shock tuning is the least impressive part of the ZForce 950 Sport. While the shocks themselves feature preload, compression, and rebound adjustability, we were never able to find a setting that kept the car glued to the trail when it got rough. A shock swap or rebuild would make a sizeable difference here, and would likely make the ZForce 950 a contender against the other trail-width machines that currently dominate the market. 76 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Ride compliance is decent, and for slow trail speeds, the ZForce works well. At speed, however, it becomes nervous and bouncy, leading to an uneasy feeling in corners and over rough terrain that could likely be eliminated with more time spent tuning.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

The ZForce 950 Sport comes packaged with 27” CST Stag tires on 14” aluminum wheels. Reminiscent of a Bighorn, the Stag tire grips well and is plenty durable for this application. This is one of the best features of the ZForce 950 Sport, as owners will not have to upgrade to a more durable/grippy tire upon taking the unit home. The Stag is a great all-terrain tire, and it really excels in loamy, chunky dirt. Steering feel is good, although a little vague at speed. A 27 inch tire is a

2021 CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT

great size for this vehicle, and it allows the ZForce to deliver over a foot of ground clearance without having to sacrifice power to a larger, heavier tire.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The full plastic doors offer a ton of protection on the ZForce 950 Sport. We wish all of the OEMs would offer factory-installed full doors for improved protection on the sides from branches, rocks, etc. Out back, the ZForce 950 Sport takes some design cues from racing 4x4 ATVs, offering a framed rack rather than a bed. The rack has multiple tie down points and a decent footprint, and can hold 220 lbs. It’s more than enough space for a cooler, spare tire, etc. The ZForce 950’s interior is one of its strongest points. Non-US Models come equipped with turn

signals and other street-legal goodies. A dedicated engine killswitch on the dash is a nice touch, and it is surrounded by quality-feeling switches that are easy to locate and use. The ZForce digital TFT display is quite possibly best in class, and was a welcomed surprise when we hopped in the unit. Featuring a full-color display that changes designs based on what throttle mode you’re in, the dash is one of the coolest features of the ZForce 950. The ZForce’s cabin has good ergonomics, and the seats are comfortable to boot. It’s a nice place to be, further solidifying the idea that CFMoto is serious about building competitive machines rather than market filler.

IMPRESSIONS

While the ZForce 950 Sport didn’t come completely out of left field, it did surprise a few of our UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 77

2021 CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT

testers with its fit and finish, grunty engine and comfortable cabin. The only thing holding it back was suspension performance, which is a hallmark of a good UTV. With more time testing and tuning this chassis, we think CFMoto will have a great machine on its hands. CFMoto has been steadily growing

78 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

their market share, dealer network, and product quality over the past decade. Don’t be surprised to see more and more of these on the trail every year, as the ZForce 950 offers some thrills at a very low point of entry.

HMF Racing

YXZ1000R

PERFORMANCE BLACKOUT FULL EXHAUST This is how a YXZ is meant to sound!

Y

amaha’s YXZ1000R gets a lot of seat time in our fleet. The naturally-aspirated YXZ may not get all of the headlines, but it sure delivers the punchlines – quick, agile, and incredibly rewarding to drive. In our efforts to turn the YXZ into the best version of itself, we called upon the exhaust extraordinaires at HMF (Hans Motorrad Factory) Racing. HMF’s founder, Hans Luenger, began building racing exhausts for streetbikes back in the 1990s, evolving into one of the key players in the offroad ATV/UTV performance segment 30 years later. They have many options for every popular UTV on the market, so check them out at www.HMFRacing.com.

STORY & PHOTOS: CODY HOOPER

Listen to that inline triple sing! 80 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

INSTALLATION

The toughest part about installing an aftermarket exhaust on a YXZ1000R/SS is getting the factory muffler out of its nest. Unbolt the header pipe and the midpipe connection flange, then unbolt the muffler. Lift the muffler off of its mounting brackets from behind the UTV, and rotate (roll) the exhaust as you slide it out of the rear frame section to allow the mounting tabs to clear the frame. You will need to rotate it multiple times to get it out, but take your time to avoid pinching fingers! Once the stock exhaust is out of the car, bolting the new one up is incredibly easy. Make sure to leave all mounting hardware finger-tight until you have the exhaust aligned, then re-check all of the hardware after the first ride and a few heat cycles. HMF’s performance exhaust requires a tune to run properly, and they have multiple options on their site. We chose to go with a DynoJet Powervision 3, which we will focus on in a separate article. Plugand-play tuners are available on HMF’s website that come pre-programmed for your ride.

OPINIONS

Our testing consisted of driving 300+ miles in the YXZ with the HMF Performance Series Blackout

full exhaust installed. The performance and sound difference versus the stock pipe are immediately noticeable, with the YXZ’s triple-cylinder engine producing more horsepower and torque absolutely everywhere in the rev range. Up top, the YXZ now pulls hard all the way to redline, begging you to let that shift light go off all the time. We chose to option our exhaust with the Blackout ceramic coating, which adds $250 to the cost of the system. HMF coats the exposed portions of the exhaust with a black cerakote high-temperature finish, enhancing hardness, impact strength abrasion and corrosion resistance, and keeping the heat in check. We have found that in repeated hard off-road use, the ceramic coated exhaust systems stay looking fresh much longer than uncoated stainless steel. It’s a worthwhile option for keeping temperatures in check in tighter spaces, as well. The YXZ has plenty of open air space around its exhaust system, so the Blackout coating is mostly for corrosion resistance and appearance here. Well worth the $250 option in our opinion. HMF has two different exhaust system options; Titan and Performance. The Titan series provides quieter sound levels and a more robust

allowing this exhaust to rotate and move while expanding and contracting with heat. This ensures a long-life and resists cracking or breaking the head pipes. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 81

design, while the Performance series is about light weight and power. Our YXZ spends most of its time wide open, which made the Performance series a great fit. Peak power gains of 15+ wheel horsepower can be expected over the stock exhaust, but the area under the dyno curve is where the HMF pipe really feels good. As we stated before, it makes more power everywhere, meaning every time you go to the throttle, you’re reminded that you made a stellar purchase!

FINAL THOUGHTS

HMF’s Performance Series full exhaust for the YXZ1000R/SS provides a nicer look, a weight savings of nearly 15 lbs, and a performance benefit that is much more tangible from the driver’s seat than it is on a dyno graph. If you’re looking for increased throttle response, stronger power, better sound, and a killer look, HMF Racing has a system for you. Don’t forget to figure a tuner/programmer into your upgrade budget however, because without it, you won’t be able to harness any power gains from your YXZ. It’s amazing how much more lively the car feels with an exhaust and a tune.

High-quality hardware and tight-fitting slip joints mean no exhaust leaks and a long, trouble-free life. Check out the size of the midpipe!

(Below) HMF’s Performance series exhaust comes with a removable spark arrestor in case you’re racing on closed courses. The muffler packing is replaceable, allowing you to service the muffler once it’s time for new packing. Many color options are available to match OE finishes on your UTV or provide a splash of color. HMF’s Yamaha metallic blue fits our YXZ1000R SS perfectly.
