Saying goodbye to a friend is never easy, but the passing of my friend Jay Selman on March 18th of this year has been sitting heavy on the hearts of everyone who knew him since we got the bad news. Jay was far too young to have left us and when a light as bright as his goes out, there simply isn’t any replacing it. As hard as it is for those he left behind, the friend we all knew and loved wouldn’t have wanted us to mope around, so we put our best foot forward and planned a celebration of life that would have been just the kind of gathering he would have enjoyed.

He loved live music, particularly outlaw country, so local musicians played, while his friends shared their favorite memories and stories. Naturally, there were tears shed, but also a lot of smiles and laughter, which was how Jay would have wanted it. His infectious laughter happened to be a part of many of the memories shared. He had the ability to lift the mood in a room with his laugh and

larger-than-life personality. Those traits alone made Jay a friend to everyone he met and the outpouring of love and support that followed his death made that abundantly apparent.

I knew who Jay was when I was younger, but it wasn’t until I moved back to Rome to start V3 that we forged a friendship. At that time he was inseparable from my dear friend Mikel Sykes, who was the head chef at La Scala at that time. They worked side-by-side and did just about everything outside of work together as well so everywhere that Mikel went, there was Jay. He is such an easy guy to love; we were instant friends. We joined with our friends, Robb and Tracy Raymond to form the Sons of Thunder bowling team in the Sunday night mixer league, and we pre-gamed bowling with Sunday afternoon 3-3 basketball. Generally, if I was doing something that wasn’t family oriented, I was with Mikel and Jay.

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH,

and Harbin Clinic is partnering with The Exchange Club Family Resource Center and Advocates for Children to raise awareness and provide encouragement, education, and practical help for our children and families.

SYMBOLS OF A HOPEFUL FUTURE

People who drive by Harbin Clinic’s pediatric locations during April will see a heart-warming sight: hosts of spinning blue pinwheels planted in the grass. These pinwheels are eye-catching reminders that there is hope for the children of families at risk.

The Family Resource Center works with parents who feel overwhelmed. Executive Director Tina Bartleson says, “Maybe they have a colicky baby, or maybe they’re unsure how to raise their children in supportive, healthy ways. We go into the homes and work with families every week for one to two hours per week for up to a year. We’re bringing in information about child development, parenting, life skills, budgeting—anything they need to deal with whatever challenges they’re facing.”

“What we find,” Bartleson says, “is some parents don’t have good information. Or they have trouble deciphering what is good information and what is misinformation. There are so many things coming at them—and when you couple that with all the everyday parenting pressure, it can be overwhelming. So, we walk with them as they try to implement positive changes in their lives.” She explains that their whole system is based on trust and relationships. Although some parents are hesitant to get involved at first, they often later say, “Please don’t go!”

PINWHEELS FOR PREVENTION

Another of Harbin Clinic’s partners in helping children and families is Advocates for Children, which works in 11 counties in Northwest Georgia. Amanda Tant, vice president at Advocates, says, “We have eight distinct programs, all designed to prevent child abuse and build family capacity.”

Pinwheels for Prevention began in 2008 with Prevent Child Abuse America.

“Now you’ll see the pinwheels at the Bartow County Courthouse and different Harbin pediatric locations,” Tant says. “This is to bring awareness to the needs of the

families and children we serve. These pinwheels represent the positive changes we can make in the lives of at-risk children when we come together to ensure they have a brighter and safer future.”

Phoebe Floyd, marketing and communications manager at Advocates, explains, “One of our programs is Hope in Your Home, which is a parent education program. One of the programs within Hope in Your Home is First Steps. Last year, First Steps visited over six hundred babies in the hospital to give those new families some initial support. It’s a scary thing to be a first-time parent.”

The Basics Program is a parent education piece that focuses on cognitive development for children from zero to three years, which is a vital period for brain development. The program teaches parents how to stimulate their children’s brains during that critical period between infancy and toddlerhood. Floyd says, “We make those families aware they don’t need to be in a state of crisis to need the resources Hope in Your Home has to offer.” She goes on to say, “Our relationship with Harbin is a longstanding one, and it goes far beyond their being financial donors; they are true partners in this work. And to see that continue to grow is really exciting.”

A COMMUNITY OF CARING

Harbin Clinic pediatricians manage the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of their patients in every stage of development. Children see their pediatrician for an average of 15 well-child visits in their first five years, so building that relationship with a healthcare provider early on helps equip families with tools to support children’s emotional, social, and cognitive development.

Dr. Melissa Davis, a Harbin Clinic pediatrician, says, “I had a patient in the office this week with a parent aide from the Family Resource Center, so I got to see our community partnerships making a difference firsthand. A mother, who found herself in difficult circumstances, had been struggling a bit with some control issues, and the best choice for her was to get a parent aide to help manage some childhood behavior that was inappropriate.”

“Over the last five years, we’ve dealt with many mental health issues with children,” Dr. Davis says. “We now screen for a lot of things we didn’t use to screen for. Depression. Anxiety. ADHD. We’ve had different societal pressures that have brought these problems to the forefront. The pandemic caused many people to become more isolated, and mental health took a turn for the worse. And if parents are undergoing financial difficulties, that

childhood experiences, such as abuse or neglect, or even being in a home where a parent abused alcohol or drugs. So, being aware of the signs of abuse or neglect is very important. Like they say, if you see something, say something.”

Unique Opportunity Within Popular Mountain Town

When friends and business partners Toni King and Sarah Molnar decided to purchase a cabin together in Blue Ridge, Georgia, they thought that it would just be a simple place for their families to get away and enjoy being outside. But what these ladies found was a place of peace that would create a lifetime of memories.

This rustic four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath cabin sits beautifully on the Toccoa River. The lot features 130 feet of river frontage which has offered hours of fun for the King and Molnar families. “I loved it when my kids were little and they would play outside for hours building forts and rock towers, having scavenger hunts, and wading/floating in the river,” said Sarah. “As they have gotten older, they love kayaking, going to downtown Blue Ridge or McCaysville to walk around and get ice cream or fudge, and picking apples at Mercier Orchards.”

While the property sits beautifully in a quiet mountain town, there is a lot that is offered in this thriving community, like the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway which passes through the property. “When we bought the cabin, there was a large wooden cutout of Bigfoot next to the railroad tracks where the Blue Ridge

Scenic Railway passes,” said Toni. “At some point, the Bigfoot cutout disappeared. We found out later that it was one of the train’s ‘points of interest’ when one of our friends who happened to be on the train told us that the conductor said, ‘We used to see Bigfoot in this area, but he has apparently moved on’. We felt so bad, that we purchased a new Bigfoot and secured it to a tree next to the tracks. Now it is once again a beloved part of the tour!”

The expansive outdoors isn’t the only thing offered with this rare property. The cabin itself boasts grand, vaulted ceilings, a spacious, open-concept kitchen, and lots of space for storage. From the kitchen, you can see through the dining area and out onto the back deck via beautiful french doors and the living area houses a bold, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. The deck off of the main bedroom means you wake up to beautiful mountain views each and every morning. The master bathroom has a corner tub, walk-in shower, and large vanity. More incredible mountain views are offered from the loft that overlooks the main living area while a den provides a cozy space with a fireplace, bunkroom, and bathroom.

The home provides plenty of space and has seen its share of visitors come and go. While currently being offered part-time as a short-term vacation rental, it has also been the site of a mid-Covid retreat. “In 2020, when my daughter’s last year of summer camp was canceled due to COVID-19, my friend and I decided to host a small group of girls from Cabin 12 so that they could spend their last summer together before aging out of camp,” said Toni. “The girls, from Rome, Atlanta, North Carolina, and South Carolina, were all tested before they arrived and we were able to keep them outside for most of the weekend. They went

white water rafting on the Ocoee River, hiking in the Aska recreation area, floated and waded in the Toccoa river, ate dinner by the campfire, and slept in hammocks down by the water. It was an adventure they will always remember.”

For those who enjoy trout fishing, this is the place for you. Easy access to the river means you are in the water and catching fish in no time. “My favorite part of spending time at the cabin is waking up before the rest of the family, pulling on my waders, and getting in a few peaceful hours of trout fishing in the morning light just steps out of the back door,” said Toni’s husband, Rob King. “The babbling of the river is the only sound you hear and it is a perfect way to start another day of adventure in Blue Ridge.”

This property has so much to offer, you won’t ever find yourself bored. “Over the years what I think my kids have loved the most is learning how to build their own fire for making s’mores and then running up to the house to get in the hot tub,” said Sarah. “Where I live I don’t have much of a backyard, but I have been able to give them the woods and a river to make their own adventures.”

So whether you are looking for a place to retreat for some R&R or looking for your forever home, this Blue Ridge beauty provides a unique experience perfect for either.

5 TIPS TO BUILD STRENGTH

1. Warmup. Starting every workout with 5-10 minutes of moderate cardio gets the blood flowing to our muscles, preventing injury and carrying the nutrients muscles need to contract.

2. Compound exercises. The “Golden Five”; squat, deadlift, pullup, overhead press, and bench press. These movements, when done correctly, use large foundational muscles throughout the body to give other exercises a strong base to work from.

3. Progressive overload. As you get stronger, gradually increase the weight, the reps, or both. Listen to your body and progress safely. If you have energy after 12 reps at 30lbs, see how 15 reps at 30 lbs feels, or how 12 reps at 35lbs.

4. Time under tension. Going slow builds strength, going fast builds endurance. Control the movement throughout the contraction and eccentric motions. The more time your muscles are under pressure the stronger they’ll get.

5. Breath. A strong core benefits every lift. Line your breathing up with the tempo of your lifts. Inhale through the nose on the eccentric movement, exhale fully on the conctaction. This will engage every part of your core to help keep a strong, stable base on the lift.

THE LODGE

"Keep your business/ social wardrobe simple with basics like a navy blazer, tan and gray trousers, white and blue dress shirts, and a brown lace-up shoe."

"Investment pieces only make sense if you wear them. A $1000 blazer is a poor investment if you wear it once a year. If you wear it several times a month you will appreciate the quality fabric, construction, and fit."

"Dress for your audience. You would rather be slightly over-dressed than underdressed. If it's afternoon business casual around a pool, there is no need to wear a sport coat. You want to blend."

"Trendy fashion pieces come and go but can add excitement to your basics. Give it a try if it feels right."

"When it comes to fit trends realize what is flattering to you. Not everyone can wear lowrise skinny jeans. If you have a few extra pounds shy away from tight clingy knits. Better that they drape comfortably. Pay attention and look in the mirror. "

"Bottom line, buy quality well-fitting pieces that you can mix and match. Also, develop a relationship with a clothing professional that can guide you and help you find the pieces that work for you."

"Classic is always age appropriate for everyone. Have trendy pieces but the entire outfit can be classic and add trendy accessories. For example, pair a blazer with denim to blend classic and trendy and another option is to add a sneaker to a classic dress for a sporty and trendy look."

"My go-to outfit formula is a good pair of denim (KUT) a trendy sneaker & a basic button-down shirt."

"If you want to update your look but don't know where to start, try incorporating one or two trendy styles into your wardrobe. Your entire outfit doesn’t have to be trendy if you can start slowly adding in items. "

"To best ensure a long life for your clothes, always follow the care instructions on the label. I also wash & hang dry."

"If I can recommend anything, do what feels comfortable for you. If I want to wear white but then I remember there's some 'you can't wear white after Labor Day or whatever' I simply pause, put on my white jeans and move on. It reminds me of the Marianne Williamson quote, the stronger I am in doing what I love, it's like it "unconsciously" gives others permission to do the same, "As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." I dig that.

We're always around and provide a safe space for anyone who would like a styling session."

"We offer contemporary, updated styles for women of all ages and sizes. We always have "investment pieces" for wardrobe building and offer specialty garments for the unique shopper. We provide complimentary alterations to ensure a proper fit for each individual customer."

"This year we're seeing vivid, saturated colors trending in fashion, allowing women of all ages to add a pop of color to their existing wardrobes."

"At mel&mimi we don't like to call out fashion don'ts but with spring and summer upon us, the length of garments catches our eye! Check yourself for an appropriate length of your shorts, skirts, and dresses. Take into account your shape and age and build on what length makes you feel and look your best."

"Trends and Fashion are for all ages. How a woman adds trending styles to her wardrobe can be a reflection of her inner spirit and personal style."

"Denim is always a staple here at mel&mimi. We offer a variety of styles, sizes, and lengths to accommodate personal tastes and trends."

Caring Completely

People for people.

For 150 years, Harbin Clinic caregivers have dedicated their lives to healing others. We believe it's important to honor our past, remember how far we've come and celebrate our progress. We also believe in moving forward in pursuit of excellence for healthcare in Northwest Georgia. At Harbin Clinic, we have always been - and will continue to be - people caring completely for people.
