Welcome to Grand Teton National Park. Thank you so much for being a part of this year’s race! We’re stoked to be here and ready to put on another great race! We love Jackson Hole! Isn’t it strange how these mountains just seem to pop out of nowhere? The mountains here are the youngest in the Rocky Mountain range, but they have a lot to offer. People travel from all over to hike, camp, mountaineer, fish, rock climb, or just take pictures. “...We cannot have freedom without wilderness, we cannot have freedom without leagues of open space beyond the cities, where boys and girls, men and women, can live at least part of their lives under no control but their own desires and abilities, free from any and all direct administration by their fellow men.” - Edward Abbey

John Muir said that going to the mountains is going home. These mountains, this wilderness, is our home. For just a little while, at least. While we are here it is our home. It is your home. The incredible thing about this place is how it can be so intimate and personal, and yet so communal. Lets respect it and each other like we would one another’s home. We hope you enjoy your stay here. If you’re headed to Yellowstone with us next weekend, we’ll see you there! Happy Exploring! - Salem, Dehn, Lyle, Megan, Cherie, Amy, and Robin

In the words of the artist and captain of The Meridian Line Jeremy Collins, “I wanted to build something with SOUL. Meridian Line was born to share the journey with others... This year we’re celebrating the National Parks on a whole new level with our outdoor campground! The expo will be outdoors and we’ll have a campground theme throughout. Come pick up your race packet, shop at our merchandise store, check out our vendors, and treat yourself to a s’more around the campfire! and inform runners about the park and its history as well as some items from our partners at the National Park Foundation. Rain or shine our campground expo will be outside. Here is to another 100 years for the NPS. Come ready to celebrate!

This year is the National Park Service Centennial. We will have scheduled ranger talks to educate

RACE INFORMATION

COURSE

Please stay on the course. Do not step off the course as, there will be car traffic in spots. The last stretch up Spring Gulch will not be closed to traffic. Although it isn’t a very busy road, there may be the occasional vehicle you will need to look out for.

ELEVATION

You can see the elevation map below. The elevation change on the course is marginal. The chart makes it look like a beast, but it is only over a couple hundred feet. This will be a slightly challenging, but overwhelmingly beautiful course!

TIMING

All masters and overall awards will be based on GUN TIME. If you plan to compete for these top spots you will need to line up at the front of the line. All age divisions and team awards will be based on CHIP TIME. If you are standing towards the back, it may be a few minutes before you cross the start line. Your time does not officially start until you cross the starting line (unless you are competing for an overall top finisher spot), so please be courteous to others as we start the race.

PACERS

Pacers will line up at the start line around 6:00 am. There will be a pacer pacing the race in 10 minute intervals starting at a 1h40m pace up to 2h30m. We will also have a 2h45m, 3h, and 3h30m pacer.

GEAR CHECK

You will be given a Gear Check bag at the starting line if you wish. It will be a white garbage bag that you can fill with anything you want transported to the finish line. There will

JUNE 4, 2016

be permanent markers you can use to write your name and bib number. The weather may be chilly, so there will be hot chocolate and coffee at the start line. Avoid putting valuables in your bag. Gear check bags will be available at the finish line as soon as the first person finishes.

Strollers are welcome on our course. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the course and be courteous to other runners!

CLOTHING ON COURSE

There will be a clothing bin to dump items in at the first aid station. Anything else found along the course will be treated as trash. Clothing dropped off won’t be picked up until the last runner has passed the drop - so you may have to wait for your clothing.

NO LITTERING AID STATIONS

We will have aid stations near mile 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12. All aid stations will have bathrooms, water + Nuun, and Honey Stinger energy gels. Mile 7 and 11 will also have oranges and bananas. See map on pg. 5.

TIME LIMIT

All runners will have 4 hours to finish the race. That is a 18-minute mile - plenty of time for walkers! If at anytime we deem it unsafe and need to pull a runner off the course we hope for understanding and immediate cooperation. Failure to comply will result in being banned from future events. We will do our best to leave the finish line open to accommodate everyone.

WAVE START

A wave start will help us organize the race and prevent overcrowding on the course. When you line up to start the race, use the colored shield on your bib and signs at the start to determine where to stand (grouping based on expected finish time runner indicated when registering for the race). Wave 1: 1:30-1:55 Wave 2: 2:00 Wave 3: 2:05-2:15 Wave 4: 2:20-2:30 Wave 5: 2:35-3:00 Wave 6: 3:00+

RECOVERY FOOD BOX

At the finish line we will have a Recovery Box (full of recovery snacks), bananas, and chocolate milk, as well as water and Nuun hydration. Please help yourself to one box, chocolate milk, and banana per runner. In an attempt to reduce waste, we will provide a place to trade/leave any unwanted snack items.

4

STROLLERS

NO DOGS

They are a liability that our insurance does not cover. However they are welcome to greet you at the finish line with the rest of your loved ones!

PARKING

START LINE PARKING - The race will begin just off the Teton Pass Hwy at Beckley Park Way. There will be parking at the start line as well as a spot to drop off runners. There will be absolutely no parking at the finish line. After the race you will be able to take a shuttle from the finish line back to the start. See page 6 for more details.

SPECTATOR INFO

Because the course runs a little bit on the highway and a large portion on Spring Gulch which we discourage driving on, it isn’t a very spectator friendly course. Spectators are welcome at the starting line, and the finish line. Another spot you could try to see your runner would be near mile 2. You could park at the Wilson Elementary School and cheer them on as they run up the Jackson Hole Community Pathway System. Please do not drive on Spring Gulch! Any cars on this part of the course will cause serious traffic problems and create a dangerous environment for our runners. Spectators are encouraged to be at the finish line to cheer on all our runners. There will not be parking at the finish line but we will have shuttles taking spectators to the finish line and back to their cars. Please see page 6 for shuttle details. We want you to be there to cheer on your runner, but please recognize that the runner area is for runners only! Please do not enter the runner area or partake of runner’s food and recovery supplies.

SHUTTLES

JUNE 4, 2016

FINISH LINE STAGING

PRE-RACE SHUTTLES

We will have buses picking up runners and bringing them to the start line (marked below in red) from 2 locations: 1) Ranch Lot at Teton Village (marked below in yellow) 2) Teton County Recreation Center (155 E Gill Ave Jackson, WY marked below in blue) You can either walk to or get dropped off at these two locations to catch the shuttle to the start line in the morning (parking at these two spots is very limited). These shuttles will leave to the start line at 4:45 AM.

Spectators and runners are welcome around the finish line to cheer on runners. The awards ceremony will take place at the stage just north of the finish line and will begin at 9:15 AM. If you checked gear at the start of the race, you will be able to pick it up in the parking lot just outside the recovery area. Lucid Images (our event photographers) will have a designated spot in the finish line staging area to take photos of runners. These photos are separate from those they will take of runners crossing the finish line and will be made available FOR FREE! The finish line will have restrooms and water as well as a recovery food box, chocolate milk, and bananas for runners. There will be water at the finish line, but no cups. Please use your Hydrapouch or water bottle to fill up at the finish line.

SPECTATOR & POST-RACE SHUTTLES

Since there is no parking at the finish line, all spectators will need to ride the shuttle to the finish line. Shuttles taking spectators to the finish line will pick up at three locations: 1) The Start Line (marked above in red) 2) Teton Village (marked above in yellow) 3) The Rec Center (marked above in blue) These buses will begin shuttling spectators to the finish line at 6:30 AM. Buses will then transport runners and spectators back to the start line as well as Teton Village and the Rec Center after the race. These shuttles will run from 6:30 AM - Noon. These buses will be leaving continuously as they fill up. The last shuttle will leave at Noon.

ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING AT THE FINISH LINE

6

If you weren’t able to make it to the expo we will be selling merchandise at the finish line! We will have our merchandise as well as some awesome shirts from Meridian Line!

PRE-RACE DAY

Having our races so close to the National Parks, unnecessary waste and trash are something we are strongly against. We are dedicated to maintaining a clean race and preserving the beauty of the area we run in. There is nothing that will ruin a view more than seeing a piece a trash in plain view from a breathtaking landscape.

TIMING SPECIFICS BEFORE THE RACE

back of your bib. You don’t have to do anything. The bib chip looks like a sticker on the back of your bib NO CHIP = NO TIME!

AFTER THE RACE

• The bib chip is disposable and

can be thrown away or left on your bib for you to cherish always. Stick around until 9:15am for our awards ceremony!

One of the most important things in a half marathon is ensuring that aid stations are plentiful and efficient. Hydration will make or break a race. What we do is offer a Hydrapouch for every runner that indicated they wanted one as part of their registration. Other options include running with a water bottle, fuel belt, camelbak or other hydration backpack, etc. Every runner prefers something different. Just make sure you have some way to stay hydrated! Although we don’t have cups on the course, we have plenty of aid stations with water and Nuun! At all aid stations we will have BLUE COOLERS WITH

WATER and RED COOLERS WITH NUUN (ELECTROLYTE DRINK). Both will have the same speed valves attached. So at each aid station you will have your choice of water or Nuun. At some places, the water will be hooked up to a system like the one pictured on above. Each of these pipes will provide water from the several speed valves we have attached. Feel free to practice at the expo!

POST-RACE INFO The awards ceremony will take place at the stage at the finish line and will begin at 9:15 AM. If you checked gear at the start of the race, you will be able to pick it up just past the finish line in the runner area. RACE RESULTS

Results will be available later the morning of the race. We will post them on Facebook and also send them in a post-race email a day or two after the race. They will also be available on our website. MEDALS

All runners will receive a finisher medal. Place medals will be given to the top 5 male and female runners overall as well as the Masters 40+ group. Additionally, the top 5 in each age group and the top 3 teams will also receive a place medal.

• •

The aid station will have a few cups in case of an emergency, do not plan on using them. Also, under no circumstances should you put your head under the valve to get a drink. Not only does this waste water, it is pretty inconsiderate of other runners. There will be water at the finish line, but no cups. Please use your Hydrapouch or water bottle to fill up at the finish line.

items we will hold onto them and you can contact us at info@vacationraces.com There will be gear check at the start line. There will be a bin to dump extra clothing at mile 3. Anything found littered on the course elsewhere will be considered trash and either thrown away or donated.

MEDICAL TENT

The medical tent at the finish line is for athletes only; family members are not allowed. Overcrowding in the medical tent prevents medical staff from doing their job. For information on an athlete receiving medical attention please wait outside the tent for updates. POST-RACE SURVEY

Within a week of race day we will be sending out a postrace survey. We would really appreciate it if you took the 5-10 minutes to complete the survey for us. The survey provides us with information that allows us to better work with the local community and gain more support If you qualify for a place medal but are not present at for future races, but more importantly it provides us with the awards ceremony to receive it we will happily ship it to you. Go to our website and request your medal and valuable insight into what we are doing well and what we need to improve. We love our runners and couldn’t pay the cost of shipping (about $8). improve our race series without your feedback. Please LOST & FOUND watch for the email. • There is no official lost & found. DOUBLE AND TRIPLE RACE INFO

OBSERVATION POINT

OBSERVATION POINT

OBSERVATION POINT

What are these? When we added the Grand Teton Half Marathon AND the Yellowstone 5K to our annual schedule, we saw a unique opportunity. We often dream of escaping responsibilities and disappearing into the wilderness for a time. Well, by having the Grand Teton Half and the Yellowstone Half on back to back weekends, these multi-race events provide that justification you were looking for to

escape into nature for a little while. The Doubles and Triple listed below aren’t just for runners who complete both races. They are for those who registered separately for the event. What is included? Runners who complete a double will receive a special shirt and medal (in addition to the finisher medal for

the separate races). **Runners could choose to opt out of either the race shirt or the extra swag item**

MEDALS AND SWAG CANNOT BE BOUGHT. THEY MUST BE EARNED.

GRIZZLY DOUBLE

The Grizzly Double is a back to back weekend half marathon race. Runners who complete The Grizzly Double will participate in the Grand Teton Half on June 4, then (hopefully) spend the week exploring Jenny Lake, hiking Table Mountain, walking around Grand Prismatic, meditating at Artist Point,

climbing Mt. Washburn and getting lost in the beauty of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. Then on June 13 they will finish the Yellowstone Half Marathon. Two half marathons, two Saturdays, and one week of exploring in one of the most incredible places in the United States.

BISON DOUBLE

The Bison Double is for runners looking to run two distances in one weekend! Runners will participate in a little shake out run on Friday night (June 10) and then compete in the Yellowstone Half Marathon the next morning (June 11). In their downtime, they’ll go explore that many wonders that Yellowstone

National Park has to offer!

This year we’ve added something extra hardcore! Last year you told us you really wanted an event for all three races. We initially thought that would be too intesnse, but for you champions out there we have the Caldera Triple! Those who signed up will run the Grand Teton Half Marathon on June 4, the Yellowstone

5K on June 10, and the Yellowstone Half Marathon on June 11. In between, they’ll get to hike and explore both parks, making this one of the most hardcore vacations we can imagine!

Combination: Grand Teton Half & Yellowstone Half Total Mileage: 26.2 Packet Pickup: Teton Expo

Combination: Yellowstone 5K & Yellowstone Half Total Mileage: 16.2 Packet Pickup: Yellowstone Expo

CALDERA TRIPLE

Combination: Grand Teton Half, Yellowstone 5K & Yellowstone Half Total Mileage: 29.3 Packet Pickup: Teton Expo

PACKET PICKUP, SWAG, AND MEDALS PACKET PICKUP - We’ll have Double and Triple race packets at their

own pickup station at the expo. We’ll have signage marking the table where you’ll check in and pickup your bibs and race shirts. The bibs and shirts* will be pre-packaged in a box for you to grab. *Same shirt exchange policy applies to runners who would like a different size (all left over shirts will be at the finish line of the race for runners to try and exchange).

SWAG - Runners that indicated they would like the special swag item (in

addition to regular race swag) were able to choose from a t-shirt, a tank-top, or a hat. These designs will not change year-after-year, so you still have a

chance to collect them all! You’ll pick up this item at the race expo. Once you’ve picked up your packet, you’ll be directed to the swag table, where your item will be waiting for you!

MEDALS - Once you’ve completed your final race at the Yellowstone

Half Marathon, you’ll get to collect your special double or triple finisher medal! Those medals will be waiting for you just outside the runner recovery area. Once you’re ready, make your way over to that table (which will be clearly marked) with your bib. A volunteer will then hand you the correct double or triple medal and the race portion of your vacation is officially complete! 9

You are responsible for knowing and following federal and state (WY, MT, ID) laws that govern firearms and weapons within the park. Find information at www.nps.gov/yell. We strive to make facilities, services, and programs accessible to all. Service animals are allowed but require a permit in the backcountry. Find information at visitor centers and on our website.

CLUB & TRIFECTA

After the race there will be a submission form online where you can upload your photo(s) and send them to us. We have a hard cutoff of 72 hours! If you don’t get it to us before Tuesday at 11 AM (MST) then we will only give you a virtual hi-five.

To encourage our runners to get out and enjoy the park, we have several club hikes and a Trifecta challenge. Our club hikes are a salute to the hardcore among us. All runners that complete one of the hikes get 50% OFF next year’s race entry, and completing the Trifecta grants 20% OFF next year’s entry. Any runner who sends us a picture of him or herself at the hike destination will officially join the club! Must be sent within 72 hours of the race. Photo must include (1) Your bib with bib number clearly visible, (2) a clear view of your happy face, and (3) your shiny new finisher medal in view. The same rules apply for the Trifecta (one picture for each of the three activities). Following the 2016 Grand Teton Half Marathon, we will post a link to the website where runners can send us their photos and names. Good luck!

This picture is from Amphitheater Lake and is an example of what yours should look like (for both the Clubs AND the Trifecta).

TABLE CLUB

This is a great hike for people travelling to Yellowstone after the race. The trail begins at Teton Campground in Grand Targhee National Forest on the Idaho side of the Tetons. To reach the trailhead from Jackson, Wyoming: take Highway 22 west over Teton Pass to Victor, Idaho; turn north on Highway 33 and travel 8 miles to Driggs, Idaho; at the main intersection in

Driggs, turn right onto “Little Ave” (look for a sign pointing to Grand Targhee Ski Resort) and proceed 6 miles; make another right onto the unpaved road marked “Teton Campground” and continue five more miles to the end. Look for the trailhead sign marked “North Teton Trail” at the far side of the campground.

AMPHITHEATER CLUB

Starting from the Lupine Meadows trailhead/parking area, Garnet Canyon Trail contours southward, across Glacier Gulch Creek, and then turns west ascending a semisteep fall line. Shortly after heading west, the trail is intersected by the Bradley Lake Trail, stay straight (right) here to continue on Garnet Canyon Trail. From this intersection,

the trail switchbacks five times. Just after the fifth switchback you’ll reach an intersection with Amphitheater Lake Trail - turn right. Once on the Amphitheater Lake Trail, you’ll switchback lazily four more times. The top of these switchbacks brings you to a nice, gently sloping area that plays host to Amphitheater Lake.

From the Taggart Lake trailhead, you’ll head west, then immediately north on the Taggart Lake Trail. Follow this wide-open singletrack as it winds its way north, eventually turning west to climb to the lakes. After diverting from Taggart Creek and heading north again, turn right onto the Bradley Lake Connector and follow it to the shores of Bradley

*Please take these hikes seriously, and act responsibly. It is not intended to be accessible to everyone. Also, bring more water than you think you need. In June, there may still be snow packed on the trail. We can’t really anticipate what the weather will be like at that time of year, but are hoping it will be clear. Depending on the weather you may want to bring yak tracks or equivalent.

THE GRAND TETON TRIFECTA

is comprised of 3 different activities. You must complete all 3 in order to complete the Trifecta. Same rules as the Club Hikes apply: take your picture at each of the 3 with your bib and finisher medal and send them to us 72

1 CASCADE CANYON (VIA JENNY LAKE)

You can take the Jenny Lake shuttle boat across the lake, or hike around the lake. Then make a short hike into Cascade Canyon. The boat ride and the hike are both beautiful!

hours after finishing the race. The Trifecta is meant to be challenging, but less strenuous. These are iconic activities inside the park that should be experienced, and are doable with children. The 3 activities that make up the Trifecta are: CASCADE CANYON (VIA JENNY LAKE), SNAKE RIVER OVERLOOK, AND JACKSON HOLE TRAM TO RENDEZVOUS POINT

2 SNAKE RIVER OVERLOOK

This is the location where Ansel Adams took his iconic picture of the Tetons in 1942. The overlook is accessible from the roadside parking lot located nine miles north of Moose on the main highway.

3 JACKSON HOLE TRAM TO RENDEZVOUS POINT

Take the Jackson Hole Tramfrom Teton Village up to Rendezvous Point. At the top you’ll get an incredible view of the Snake River Valley and Grand Teton National Park and the Gros Ventre Range.

PARK INFORMATION All visitors are required to purchase a pass in order to enter Grand Teton National Park. Seniors over 62 can purchase a lifetime pass for just $10. Active members of the U.S. Military are eligible for a free pass as well as U.S. citizens with permanent disabilities.

If you already own a National Park Annual Pass, you’re good to go! Otherwise you can purchase one at the park entrance, or just a single park pass.
