THE ZION HALF MARATHON

THECOURSE

OPEN COURSE - This race is an open course. There will be cars on the road as well as runners. DO NOT step off the course into traffic, you will be disqualified. We want you to stay safe. CHOKE START - The start will be “choked”. If you are standing towards the back, after the gun goes off you may be standing for a few moments before there is any movement. This is to space everyone out and to avoid a rush. Your time does not oficially start until you cross the starting line, so please be curtious to others as we start the race. GEAR CHECK - You will be given a Gear Check bag at the starting line if you wish. It will be a white garbage bag that you can fill with anything you want transported to the finish line. There will be permanent markers you can use to write your name and bib number. Avoid putting valuables in your bag. CLOTHING ON COURSE - We will have a clothing bin to dump items in at mile 3. Anything else found along the course will be treated as trash. ELEVATION (ft) - You can see the elevation map below. It looks a little scary, but pay attention to the real elevation gain. It’s very gradual (about a 2 feet gain for every 100 yards). Besides, downhill courses are for wimps. It’ll all be worth it to see the view at the finish line.

SPECTATOR INFO - Because of the significant amount of road control, spectators are not allowed to stop along the highway at any point along the race. Spectators are welcome at the starting line, but the starting line will be closed to vehicles from 6:40 AM to approximately 7:15 AM. Expect race related delays along highway 9 towards Springdale. The best place to watch in Springdale would be to park at the LDS church approximately 2 miles from the finish line. Spectators are encouraged to be at the finish line to cheer on all our runners. Limited parking will be available in Springdale along Lion Blvd. If you can walk from your hotel to the finish line, please do so. There will be limited parking near the finish line. See page 18 for more parking details. OTHER COURSE INFO - Please do not litter on our course! Any kind of road markings with paint or even chalk will not be allowed. Please help us keep the area pristine for those who come after us.

PRE-RACE

DINNERHOST We have four pre-race dinner hosts this year, each offering a 25% discount for our runners. All runners need to do is show their bib to get the 25% off (only good for runners and does not include drinks). These are some of the best spots to eat while you’re in Springdale. Expect these places to be busy, so try to plan accordingly (call ahead and check availability and wait times) and maybe have a backup plan in case they’re full. Oscar’s Cafe - Their food is prepared fresh every day and they are well known for their garlic burgers and Mexican food. On a personal note, I ate one of the best breakfasts I have ever had at Oscars. 948 Zion Park Blvd, Springdale, UT (435) 772-3232 · cafeoscars.com Switchback Grille - Switchback Steak & Fish House is one of the nicest restaurants in Springdale. It features USDA Prime steaks, wood-fire pizza, pastas, full bar and a fresh fish menu that follows the seasons. You may also visit the Jack’s Sports Grille right next door for a more casual atmosphere. 1149 Zion Park Blvd, Springdale, UT (435) 772-3700 · switchbacktrading.com Wildcat Willies - A Springdale Classic with a Southwestern atmosphere. They serve Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner with a full service Saloon and plasma T.V.’s. You can find Steaks, Ribs, Seafood, Pasta, Pizza, Burgers, Sandwiches, etc. It is even kid friendly with children’s menu. 897 Zion Park Blvd, Springdale, UT (435) 772-0115 · wildcatwillies.com Zion Canyon Brew Pub - right at the Giant Screen theater where the expo is held and where the finish line will be. Great food with an awesome view! 95 Zion Park Blvd #2, Springdale, UT (435) 772-0336

RACE GUIDE >>CLUB & TRIFECTA

ANGELSCLUB The Angels Club is a salute the hardcore among us. We want to reward anyone who hikes Angels Landing after the race. To join the Angels Club, submit a picture of yourself at the top of Angels Landing within 72 hours of the end of the race which includes: 1) A clear view of your face 2) Your bib with bib numbers clearly visible 3) Your finisher medal in plain view Angels Landing - The trail to Angels Landing is 2.4 miles long (4.8 round trip). Since shuttles will not be running this time of year, we recommend parking at the Zion Lodge and take the short walk (less than a half mile) to The Grotto where the trailhead is. The first 2-miles are paved and well-maintained. Most of the path is sunny, but Refrigerator Canyon offers shade and often a cool breeze. This is a good early morning hike. Make sure to allow time to be off the trail by dark if starting late in the day. The last halfmile is across a narrow sandstone ridge. Anchored support chains are attached along some sections of the sheer fin.

Sheer cliffs at high elevations while hiking on a narrow fin. Not suggested for children or those with a fear of

heights. Avoid standing near the edge at all times! Do not hike the trail when it is wet, storming, or when high winds are present.

*Every year, several people die hiking Angel’s Landing, largely due to not fully appreciating its dangers. Please take the hike seriously, and do not act irresponsibly if you decide to attempt the hike. It is not intended to be accessible to everyone.

All runners the join the Angels Club will not only be immortalized on our website, but will also receive 50% OFF next year’s race entry! Last year we had 103 people take the challenge! After the race there will be a submission form online where you can upload your photo(s) and send them to us. We have a hard cutoff of 72 hours! If you don’t get it to us before Tuesday at 11 AM (MST) then we will only give you a virtual hi-five. This picture is what yours should look like (for both the Angels Club AND the Trifecta). RACE GUIDE >>CLUB & TRIFECTA

ZIONTRIFECTA The Zion Trifecta is comprised of 3 different activities. You must complete all 3 in order to complete the Trifecta. Same rules as the Angels Club apply: take your picture at each of the 3 with your bib and finisher medal and send them to us 72 hours after finishing the race. The Trifecta is meant to be challenging, but less strenuous. These are iconic activities inside the park that should be experienced, but are doable with children. The 3 activities that makeup the Trifecta are:

1 Riverside Walk (The Narrows) - The trail was historically called “Gateway to the Narrows” but is now commonly referred to as Riverside Walk. A nice, paved, 3 mile roundtrip hike. Extra hi-fives for anyone that actually wades in the water! (NOTE: we don’t recommend it. At this time of year the water is still frigid!! But if you’re feeling reckless and want extra kudos for your picture, we won’t be there to stop you).

2 Canyon Overlook - Canyon Overlook is only a mile roundtrip hike! This is perfect for families and offers a wonderful view of the Zion canyon with a look at the famous peaks like Bridge Mountain, West Temple, and The Sentinel. As an added bonus, when you drive up to the parking lot to make the short hike to the lookout, you get to pass through the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel!

3 Kolob Canyon (Timbercreek Overlook) - Kolob Canyon is Zion’s best kept secret. About an hour north on I-15 from the main park entrance, this part of the park is less often visited by travelers, but it’s amazingly beautiful. The Timber Creek Trail is another short hike (1.2 miles roundtrip) that offers amazing views of Kolob Canyon. After about a 5 mile drive up the canyon you can park in a parking lot at the trail head.
