SEASON 2023 - August 12
The anxiety levels will have risen again at many clubs this week as we enter the last round of home and away games for our Divisional Women’s teams and Men’s Thirds teams.
The traditional relegation and promotion battles will come to a climax, with information on results circulating around as most Clubs will learn their fate by 5pm Saturday night.
For the teams that make the finals, the excitement of participating in finals and the possibilities that brings, puts an extra spring into everyone’s step around the Club.
The first finals to be played next weekend will be headlined by the Women’s Thirds Grand Final between Kew and West Brunswick. Scheduled to be played at 2pm on Sunday 20th August at Elsternwick Park, both sides have been strong throughout the season and this promises to be a great contest.
The next six weeks is an enormous workload for the VAFA to manage, with 136 finals games to manage across 35 sections.
As per 2022, all Men’s Thirds semi finals and all Division 1-4 Under 19 semi finals, will be played at the home ground of the highest placed team.
All other finals are scheduled to be played at a neutral venue and we are pleased to have secured quality grounds for this purpose.
Following the dramas of the storm that turned the ground into a quagmire in the 2022 Premier B Men’s Grand Final, Bayside City Council have done significant work to ensure that Elsternwick Park will be in great shape to host the majority of our finals, culminating
Jason ReddickCEO
in the William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final on Sunday 17th September, followed by the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final on Sunday 24th September.
The other tier one venue in Bayside, Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham, has also been secured, along with fellow state league ground, Coburg City Oval (Piranha Park) in Coburg.
In addition for this year, we are pleased to announce that Box Hill City Oval, used by Hawthorn’s state league teams, will return to host VAFA finals, along with the traditional Bill Lawry Oval in Northcote.
Complimenting these grounds, we are most grateful to Whitefriars FC (Whitefriars College), Old Paradians FC (Garvey Oval) and De La Salle (Waverley Oval) for access to their venues.
Our staff have done a reconnaissance of all these venues and thanks to the unseasonal warm and dry effects of El Nino that has kicked in this year, and the lack of incessant winter rain periods, all venues are in great shape to host these finals matches.
Providing premium playing and spectator experiences during finals is one of our Strategic Goals and we believe, in an extremely crowded and competitive market, that we have secured the appropriate grounds and venues to showcase our VAFA finals series for 2023.
To all those, players, coaches, teams and Clubs involved, we remind you to abide by the Competition’s code of conduct at all times, be respectful of everyone, and enjoy the experience in true amateur spirit.

Defensive acts will be the Premiership winning acts
Three home and away games remaining before September. The final chances for teams at the top of the ladder to fine tune gameplans, and break down the opposition walls.
The top four sides won’t meet one another this weekend, but the four of them are doing a merry little defensive dance between themselves as a side show to the main event in 2023.
The benchmark for defensive output across the past two seasons has been St Kevin’s. Anthony Lynch has set about implementing an 18-man press that focuses on strangling and stifling the opposition.
In the premiership year of 2022, St Kevin’s only conceded 51 points per game. On Grand Final day, 24. In 2023, the number has climbed to 60 points per game. It’s still in the window of a Premiership winning defence.
They’re ranked second only to Collegians. The Lions are the only team to have kicked over 100 points against SKOB since the 2019 William Buck Premier Grand Final.
While never being prolific scorers themselves, the last fortnight has seen them have 75 shots at goal, compared to the opposition’s 26.
Josh Tynan, Jack Andriske, Michael Pisker, Sam Cameron have been holding down the fort of the backline. This weekend is going to be a wonderful welcome back to Sam Critchley.
Old Melburnians were able to keep Old Xaverians to 55 points for the game last weekend. Only the second time this year they’ve kept a team under 70 points.
The first time they’ve won a first quarter. How will they go should Port Melbourne recall Tom Cameron and Dylan Clarke, and if George Hurley-Wellington can’t get out of work?
Will Gus Borthwick follow up his best on ground display with a second one after 12 months out of the game?
Paul Satterley hasn’t beaten St Kevin’s in his time at the OM’s, it’s a must win game for them if they want to continue in William Buck Premier, or hope for other results to fall in their favour.
Collegians can all but lock up top spot on Saturday when they face off against Old Haileybury. Despite only being a game clear of University Blues, the 182% is streets ahead of the next best.
The Lions have been entertaining throughout the year, playing quick fast-moving footy, moving the ball on at all costs. Which has allowed Ed Greene and Will Pocknee (34 goals each) and Dave Mirra (33 goals) to find space in the forward 50 arc to be effective.
At the other end of the ground, Matt Warren has been the general in leading this side to being ranked #1 for defence, just 54 points against in 2023.. Handy lieutenants by his side, Luke McCleary and Sam Sofrinidis.
These three men were all part of the Big V squad selected by Greg Hutchison and are the reason Collegians are #1 for efficiency when it comes to exiting defensive 50.
The SS Long-Sleeve is having a stellar season and according to VAFA Media’s, Josh Heriot would be leading the Lions best and
fairest, nor wouldn’t be out of place on the podium on Woodrow Medal night.
A slip-up last weekend against University Blacks has left Old Haileybury in a vulnerable position with percentage holding them in eighth spot. For all the talk about the key VFL playmakers, and ex-AFL talent in the side, Hugo Nosiara is laying claim to be the next big thing in the Bloods defence.
A rising star nomination a fortnight ago franked his form. While OM’s must win to get past Old Haileybury. Daniel Ward’s side must win to stay ahead of Paul Satterley.
Should both sides take the L, the percentage gap will be the biggest watch with a fortnight to go.
A week ago, Old Scotch went into Round 15 against St Kevin’s as a team on the rise. The return to their early season form, players returning, and a fit Sam Grant in the ruck.
The St Kevin’s strangle was on early and the Cardinals weren’t able to get the game on their terms at all. This weekend, facing off against University Blacks will prove just as big of a challenge.
Blacks are 5-1 in the last six weeks. With a percentage of 134% in that time. In four of the six games they’ve kept the opposition to under 55 points. In two of those four results, under 30 points. The best defender in the competition plays at Uni Blacks, Campbell Moorfield. Collegians the only side who refused to kick it in his direction three weeks ago. If the Cardinals want to win, the same rule has to be applied.
Uni Blacks rank first for spoils, pressure acts, and second for overall pressure. It’s no surprise they’ve been able to nullify and squeeze the likes of St Kevin’s, Old Xaverians and Old Melburnians in consecutive weeks.
Old Scotch at this point last year were conceding 88 points per game. Prior to the weekend, that number was down to 61. A four and a half goal better defensive side is nothing to be sneezed at.
Jordan Clarke was one of the best last week, his intercept marking was on display. Ben Hays, Jack Polkinghorne, Jack Brown all need to go to another level this weekend. Particularly when the Blacks midfield will almost be spoon fed by an in-form Josh Steadman. A double chance is certainly not out of the equation for Old Scotch. Uni Blacks however, might want to have a say on the shaping of the final four in this contest.
University Blues returned to their high-scoring best last weekend against Caulfield. This weekend they’ll be out for vengeance against the Old Xaverians
After being held to four goals against the red and black mafia earlier on in the year, these two sides have taken different paths in the home and away rounds since.
Only twice this year, the defence hasn’t been able to hold back the momentum of opposition sides. The rest of the time nothing has gone past Marty Gleeson, Tom Young, Tom Cutler and Jack Stephens.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 2 Access Team Lists on GameDay via VAFA.com.au
Without the two thrashings by Old Scotch and Collegians, the University Blues are only conceding eight goals a game against the rest of William Buck Premier. They get more than enough looks at the goal at the other end to complement the work of the defence.
It’s a very young defensive unit that has played for the Old Xaverians this year, the off-season was spent attempting to replace Ryan Schoenmakers, Will Hams, Ben Banting, Brad Olsson. Key pillars of any backline. It’s been tough right around the ground for them, particularly across Round 13, 14 and 15, conceding 112, 98 and 108 points in those three matches.
Since Xav’s kicked 20 goals against Caulfield in Round 11, they’ve only managed 22 in the past four weeks. They’ll obviously be keen to boost that number in the RSN Xtra2 Match of the Day to stop the questions and speculation that they may be heading to Premier B if they lose the final three matches.
Old Brighton will have left their run to the finals too late. However, last weekend was a great indicator of what this side is capable of.
Caulfield Grammarians will be the next side to feel the full force of the Tonners as they aim to finish off 2023 full of momentum leading into the pre-season.
The Brighton chirp was on full display last weekend, defensive acts have always been the number one area for the lads of Brighton Beach Oval.
Ranked #1 in smothers, tackles, tackling efficiency, defensive 50 tackles. They love the grunt work, and they relish doing so. Tom Yorgey across the half-back flank is the epitome of all that is Old Brighton.
Sam Collins is a quiet unassuming character that is also a weekly part of the back six whilst Kai Dimattina has worked into his senior career floating across the backline.
Caulfield has arguably the best young defender in the game. Oscar Roberts. It’s no surprise to anyone that we’ve saved the best until last when it comes to highlighting some of the magnificent defenders this competition has.
Roberts has had to battle out of his division in weight, in size, in speed throughout 2023. And for the most part, he has stood up to the task.
Guy McKenna has been glowing in his endorsement of Roberts, and in time, he may well be the one leading the Fields into battle beyond 2023.
Last year there was an obvious front-runner at this point of the year if we’re to follow the old adage of defence winning premierships.
This year the defensive units of the top four stack up. Blues have clamped Collegians, Collegians have owned St Kevin’s, St Kevin’s have swallowed Scotch, and Scotch have stifled the Blues.
Those four sides have got three weeks to work out how to break through the great walls and pillars that have been set up to kick a winning score in the month that matters the most. September.

Collegians handed shock loss as race for finals positions heats up
Old Scotch have proved they are a force to be reckoned with, solidifying their hold on a finals finish with a 55-point victory over Coburg. The Cardinals would have surprised many with their form this season, having been elevated to the Premier Competition for this season.
After a strong win last weekend, Coburg failed to back it up, kicking only one goal via Teagan Brett in the final quarter, being held scoreless for the first three quarters of the game.
It was a high scoring affair for Old Scotch, setting the tone in the first quarter with four goals. It was a true team effort, with six different goalkickers for the match. For the Lions, Lauren Suleiman was their best whilst Olivia Arundel was the Cardinals’ best.
Next up, Old Scotch will host Fitzroy, whilst Coburg go into a must-win clash against Collegians in the Sunday afternoon time slot.
Collegians were handed an unexpected loss on the weekend, falling to West Brunswick by 22 points. A loss in a middle-order clash has potentially put Collegians spot in finals at risk, as they now sit in fourth only one game clear of the Magpies.
In the match of the round, the Magpies’ stepped up, and their second quarter showed they were ready to go to battle for the day, kicking 3.2. Georgia Harris kicked Collegians only two goals for the game, whilst Kayla Slattery was their best. West Brunswick did not list their best players or goalkickers at the time of writing.
Collegians will travel to Piranha Park next weekend in what is a must-win game to ensure their hold on a spot in the finals, as West Brunswick host Melbourne Uni.
It was business as usual for St Kevin’s on Saturday, beating Fitzroy by 42 points at Righetti Oval. Fitzroy were held goalless for the first quarter and went on to kick 1.2 for the remainder of the game.
It was raining goals for SKOB, kicking 7.8 for the game, yet it was their last quarter which was the most impressive. Having kicked 3.6 to three quarter time, the girls found avenues to goal, kicking 4.2 in the fourth quarter.
Ashleigh Byers had two goals for the game to feature in the best, whilst Eliza Straford earned the best on ground. It was a game where less experienced players stepped up and had their moment which is great to see in the lead up to finals. Fitzroy did not upload their goalkickers or best players at the time of writing.
St Kevin’s will have the bye next weekend before they return to finish their run home into finals. Fitzroy travel to Camberwell to take on Old Scotch.
Kew was another one to continue their dominance on the weekend, beating Melbourne Uni by 36 points. It marks a second tough loss for Melbourne Uni after they lost to Fitzroy by 46 points last week.
Melbourne Uni kicked only 1.3 for the game, being held to just one point for the entirety of the first half. Credit must be given to Kew for such strong defence which will hold them in good stead heading towards finals.

Old Geelong and De La Salle create an intriguing finals race
As the battle to the finals continues to bubble away, St Bernards have come away from round 15 with their hearts full of confidence, extending four games clear on top of the ladder. With three rounds to come, third and fourth spot are still up for the taking with De La Salle, Old Geelong, St Bedes/Mentone, and Beaumaris all in the hunt.
The top two sides took to the field at the Brunswick Street Oval in a battle that was played in twilight conditions. St Bernards got the better of Fitzroy by 13 points, but it was certainly a tighter contest than their previous encounter played in round 8.
For the Snowdogs, it was rare to see the Roys post a score of 73 considering they’ve been able to keep teams to an average of 51.8 points a game, leading the competition in this category. However, it was a gallant performance from Fitzroy who kicked five final quarter goals as they pushed the Snowdogs to the bell. Ted Clayton kept them in the hunt with two majors as the Roys finished with 10 individual goal kickers. Mark Gregory provided some quality service for the Snowdogs, as he was named their best with Charlie Vague and also Daniel Mott each kicking three.
After some off field drama, Beaumaris were last week informed that they had been stripped of any premiership points gained in round 11 and 12 for exceeding their player points with an Independent Integrity Panel making a final judgement. With the ladder adjusted on Friday, a win for the Sharks was ever important to stay in touch with the finals race. De La Salle spoilt the party however, with a ten-point win at Waverley Oval.
The match was tight throughout the afternoon with Nathan Scollo kicking four for De La Salle and Steven Karvellas named their best. For the Sharks, they remain a game behind De La Salle, Old Geelong, and St Bedes/Mentone but a strong percentage could see them climb up the ladder if they are to win next week against Old Geelong.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers were victorious over the Monash Blues by 65 points with Michael Barnes kicking five for the afternoon and Brayden O’Toole booting four.
The Tigers found themselves in control for much of the afternoon including a powerful final quarter which saw them kick six goals. Will Snookes battled up forward for the Blues with three majors with Nixon Hall named their best player.
Old Geelong was able to win convincingly against Old Trinity at Como Park as they continue the push for a top four spot. Mickey Nicholls booted four majors for the afternoon to progress his yearly total to 31.
Harrison Kol also managed to find the goals with three majors. Despite a three-point difference at the main break, Old Geelong stormed clear in the second half with 12 goals.
The final match of the round in Premier B saw Williamstown CYMS string together a solid performance as they prevailed against AJAX by 59 points.

So, what can we look forward to in Round 16? The most intrigue will be with Beaumaris as they face Old Geelong in what can only be described as a ding dong battle. If the Sharks are to win it could see them jump back into the top four, while for Geelong, a win would help their finals aspirations and make it all the more difficult for Beaumaris. Fitzroy will be hoping to bounce back against St Bedes/Mentone with Old Trinity to face De La Salle. Meanwhile the Snowdogs will clash with Ajax with the final match to see Monash Blues and Williamstown do battle.

Cobras go top in Prem B women’s as favourites are defeated
Nerves are high as the journey to the 2023 Finals in Premier B Women’s draws nearer, while a new team tops the ladder in round 15.
Aquinas gave the ladies from Monash the blues, generating a 15-point-margin between the finals scores.
Melanie Hogg was once again best-on-field for Aquinas for the second week in a row, contributing one goal for her team, alongside Hannah Mclean, Laura McHugh and Yasna Cook who also scored one goal each.
Although the Blues struggled to withhold the power of Aquinas, Stacey Barbagallo scored two goals, with Jacqueline Greer scoring one and Abbie Hansen putting on a best-player performance.
Next week the Blues will come head-to-head against Richmond Central while Aquinas take on the Old Yarra Cobras.
The St Bedes/Mentone Tigers had an outstanding home match against the ladies from North Brunswick, scoring a total of 12 goals and 11 behinds in comparison to North Brunswick’s one goal and four behinds.
It was a week of many personal bests for the Tigers, with Laura Amelung kicking four goals, Caitlin Saultry kicking two, Elisa Catanzariti, Tia Pastore, and Grace Oliver one as well as, Madeline Pearson who kicked three goals in a best-on-field performance.
North Brunswick›s only goal was scored by Annie Little, while Madeline Bentley was their best-on-field.
Can the Tigers keep up their efforts against Mazenod in round 16 and will North Brunswick step up in next week›s match against the ladies from the other side of Brunswick?
It has been a week full of wins for the Old Yarra Cobras, scoring 13 goals and 10 behinds against Mazenod’s single behind, while also scoring a spot on the top of the ladder.
Emma Elliott, Tahlia Limburg, Alannah Murray, Belinda Harris and Lara Hausegger all scored two goals each for their team, while Zoe Scanlon, Clare Moody, Belinda Wriedt and Jacqui Morton contributed one goal each. Mikayla Plunkett was awarded best-player.
In round 16 the Cobras will head to the home grounds of Aquinas, while Mazenod play a home match against the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.
It was a triumphant outing for Brunswick, who headed to the home grounds of Richmond Central, scoring a total of eight goals and four behinds in comparison to Richmond’s one goal and three behinds.
In round 16 Brunswick will take an outing to the other side of Brunswick while Richmond play a home match against the Monash Blues.
Illiana Zafiriou still sits on top of the sharpshooters with 25 goals, with Laura Amelung one goal behind, followed by Molly Mcfarlane on 18, Tahlia Limburg on 17 and Emma Draffin on 13.

Vulture’s epic last quarter puts them in prime position for finals
Round 15 of the Premier C Men’s competition has been nothing short of intense, with teams either solidifying their spots in the finals or falling further away from their desired positions.
At Chelsworth Park, the highly anticipated clash between Old Ivanhoe and Parkdale Vultures unfolded, with significant ladder implications at stake. Old Ivanhoe was eager to secure a top two spot, while Parkdale fought to cement their position in the top four, a position they were barely holding on to.
The game remained tightly contested for the first three quarters, with Parkdale maintaining a slight edge on the scoreboard. Ivanhoe fought back however and narrowed the gap to just two points by the end of the third quarter.
In the final quarter, Parkdale unleashed an offensive onslaught, scoring five goals that led them to a 16-point victory. Ryan Macdermid played a crucial role for the Vultures, contributing five goals to their 14, while Harvey Johnston also made a significant impact with two goals of his own.
With this win, Parkdale now find themselves a game and a half clear in fourth position on the ladder, firmly in control of their destiny as they need to only secure a win against Mazenod next week to lock in a finals spot. The team’s remarkable form suggests they could pose a serious threat in the finals, especially after defeating a top two side like Old Ivanhoe.
Old Ivanhoe, on the other hand, missed a golden opportunity to solidify their top two position, finding themselves still tied with PEGS, only holding onto their top two position by percentage.
Meanwhile, Mazenod missed a big chance to stay in touch with the top four as they fell 15 points short to Old Carey in a scrappy encounter at Carey Sports Complex. Despite a relatively low-scoring affair, Lachlan Senior’s three goals proved instrumental in securing the victory for Old Carey.
The loss has made it more challenging for Mazenod to secure a finals appearance. Their upcoming match against Parkdale Vultures will be crucial, as a win would keep their season alive, but a loss would bring it to an end.
In a dominant performance, Old Camberwell emerged as 57-point victors against the Hampton Rovers, tightening their spot in the top two, holding a game and a half lead on top of the ladder.
Old Camberwell came out of the blocks with a strong start and carried that momentum throughout. Ben Hart and Riley Verbi made significant contributions, with 3 and 4 goals, respectively.
In a tough day at the office for the Rovers, the likes of Harrison Mcintyre and William Crawford stood tall, with 2 goals each and mentioned in their best players.
Marcellin showed their determination to avoid relegation by securing a resounding 91-point victory over Ormond
Lachlan Rush, Josh Posar, and Adam Tomaro each kicked three goals to celebrate the win, providing some relief in a trying season.
Although Ormond couldn’t get the job done, Blake Picone and James Tsakonas led from the front. With the bye next round, Ormond will be able to regroup before looking to finish the season strong in the final two rounds.

As the competition moves forward to Round 16, all eyes will be on Gerry Green Reserve, where the Parkdale Vultures face Mazenod in what will be a finals-like game with season-defining consequences. A victory for the Vultures would secure their spot in the finals and eliminate Mazenod from contention. On the other hand, a win for Mazenod would keep their season alive for another week.
Additionally, the clash between Old Camberwell and Old Ivanhoe promises to be a crucial game that could significantly impact the order of the top four.
With such high stakes encounters on the horizon, Round 16 is shaping up to be another thrilling chapter in Premier C Men’s.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Joel Chilcott (Glen Eira Gryphons)
The VAFA congratulates Joel Chilcott from the Glen Eira Gryphons, who has received the Men’s Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 15. Joel has been a consistent performer across his 14 games this season, scoring 13 goals, including 2 from the weekend.

Off-the field he’s already displaying all the hallmarks of a great clubman and personality to have around. He has a twin brother (Aidan) who is playing great footy in our U19s, and his father (Andrew) and mother (Elizabeth) are regulars down at Packer Park watching their sons play.”

UHS-VU sends a message as wayward kicking cause concerns
Inaccuracy in front of the big sticks proved costly for more than one team this round; a concern that would need to be ironed out for some ahead of finals, where every goal will count. Interestingly, the Division combined for 125.125 in goals and behinds.
UHS-VU vs Oakleigh
In the upset of the round, UHS-VU downed the inaccurate Krushers by eight points. Oakleigh unable to escape the lingering demons from their round 5 clash with the Krushers who boasted a 7-point victory.
With weather hardly playing a factor, scoring shots were not hard to come by, but goals were, with only 1-goal apiece going into the quarter time huddle. A half time grid locked at 16 points each way, but Oakleigh had 11 scoring shots to UHS 5. Whilst Oakleigh was getting plenty of the ball, they were unable to convert at crucial times. Finishing with 7 more scoring shots, to then lose by 8 points will be a wakeup call.
James McGee looked deadly as always kicking three majors: his accuracy helping his team over the line. Veteran forward for the Krushers Aaron Cloke was able to be an up-field presence for Oakleigh but sprayed some shots he normally would slot with ease.
The Vultures were able to kick away from Oakleigh and maintain an arms-length from the Krushers with a win being vital to keep them in finals contention come September, possibly becoming a real threat.
Old Peninsula vs West Brunswick
The pirates were able to get home in a thriller down at the Harry Mcdonald Oval and Peter Williamson couldn’t be prouder of his troops. A big day for loyal clubman, Tom Feldgen, who played his 150th game for Old Peninsula. A big congratulations to Tom and to West Brunswick for clapping him off the ground as he was chaired off.
The Pirates picked up after they beat Kew Bears last week and were able to peel off four opening quarter majors that set the tone of the game. Craig Sanders was instrumental
whilst Ben Willamson played a sublime game once again, consistently performing for the last six weeks.
Bailey Payze had his goal kicking boots on as he was able to convert four majors to ease off the Magpies serge. West Brunswick did lead the counterattack post the long break blasting 6 majors to 3. Thomas Zafiropoulos, Luke Buckler and Ben Ablett were all crucial in the magpies’ resurrection. But a late comeback from the experienced Pirates outfit were able to come home with a key win for 2023.
Kew FC vs Therry Penola
Kew Bears played host to a resurgent Lions outfit on the back of some pretty handy games. In yet another game that was determined by the behinds scored. The message at half time from the Bears coach stressed the need for accuracy in front of goals, with missed opportunities plaguing the first half.
The Lions continued to lift with each quarter and were ultimately more potent inside 50. Jarrod Egglestone showed his brute strength and was able to kick two very handy goals. The Bears were needing someone to stand up and Ned Waters did just that, kicking a handy four majors that put the Bears in touching distance. Therry held strong with stars Jackson Young and Joel Costello leading from the front.
A frantic final quarter saw the Bears able to kick 2 quick majors and swing the momentum, as the southern end was boasting a good wind. The game was alive. A 50/50 call with seven minutes remaining could have seen the game go anywhere, but the shot was deemed a behind. The Lions transitioned the ball from coast to coast to slot a major to win the game. The Lions won by 18 points.
Prahran vs Preston
The Two Blues played host to the Bullants at D.W Lucas Reserve. Both teams started well with Preston taking a 1-point lead into quarter time. Very much in the game against a top-4 side, the Bullants were up and about with Alex Cincotta having instrumental influence.

It wasn’t until the Two Blues flicked the switch and made Jonathon Simonetta a crucial target up forward when they looked deadly. Simonetta was able to convert six majors in a goal kicking display boasting deadly accuracy. Whilst the game was not a blowout at half time, the Bullants were able to stay in the contest only being down by a goal at the long break.
The Two Blues went to work after half time and really put the foot down and never looked back. With an impressive 15 goals in the second half, Prahran got the job done against Preston by 95 points.
Glen Eira vs Ivanhoe
Glen Eira travelled to Ivanhoe Park to face Ivanhoe and burst straight out the gates early to solidify their dominance. With 35 goals scored for the game, there was no downtime for either side.
The ever-reliable Tim Johnstone was a masterstroke with 8 majors and his number two-man Sean Bass chimed in with 6 goals. With a lead of 75, the game was really done and dusted at three quarter time.
A highlight for Ivanhoe was Ash Close who was able to convert five majors for the game, earning himself a spot in the best. Glen Eira goes one step further to establish themselves as minor premiers for 2023 as they set their sights on finals.

Beaumaris break the hearts of Old Haileybury
As the penultimate round comes to a close, the top four sides in Division 1 Women’s have been locked in.
Marcellin OC have sealed their place in finals with a 13-point victory over Old Xaverians at Marcellin College.
Both teams struggled to find avenues to score in the first term, with neither team able to find a major, however, in the second term Marcellin set themselves up for victory by kicking 3 unanswered goals. Old Xaverians fought back in the second half, finally scoring some goals of their own, but it was not enough for them to ever take the lead.
Zoe Glascott continued her strong goal kicking form for Marcellin with another 2 goals, which sees her season total increase to 18. Charlotte Van Der Vlies was best on for Marcellin, while Amy Benifer was the stand-out for Old Xaverians.
Old Camberwell Grammarians travelled to Rathmines Road Reserve, where they pulled out a dominant display against Hawthorn AFC
The Grammarians put in a four-quarter effort, extending their lead at every break, with the final scoreline reading 2.3-15 to 9.19-73.
Emogen Johnson fought valiantly for Hawthorn, supported by the dynamic Joelly Firmin who kicked both Hawks goals. Alexandra Herrington and Sara Fortunato lead the charge for Grammarians, kicking two goals apiece, while Olivia Honore was also impressive.
Old Brighton have been building nicely through the back end of the season and continued their winning ways defeating the Hampton Rovers by 51 points.
Old Brighton came out firing, kicking four goals to zero in the first term, to set themselves up for the rest of the day. Hampton Rovers was the better side in the second term, but only managed one goal and one behind for their efforts. Old Brighton put the pedal down in the third, kicking five goals to push the lead out to 51 points, which remained the margin for the rest of the game.
Galaminda Gellar was best for Hampton Rovers for the second consecutive week, while Amber Price slotted their only goal.
Daisy Flockart is causing headaches for defenders across the competition, as she kicked another three goals to find herself in equal third on the goal-kicking tally, an especially impressive feat considering she has only played in 7 matches so far this season. Flockart has also featured in the best players for each of those games.
Beaumaris managed another come from behind win, this time against Old Geelong
Old Geelong, who were fighting to keep their finals chase alive, were dominant in the first half but due to inaccuracy in front of goals, only held an 8-point lead going into the main break.
Beaumaris, determined not to break their undefeated streak, managed to get the game back on their terms in the third, and claimed a narrow 3-point lead going into the final break. In the end, the Sharks were too strong for Old Geelong and extended their lead to 8 points by the final siren.
Finishing with more scoring shots than the Sharks, Old Geelong will be devastated that they weren’t able to get the job done on this occasion, resulting in finals now being out of the question.
Brooke Mckay and Annabel Rafferty can hold their heads high, after doing everything they could to try to seal victory for the Ogettes. Sophie Joubert and Camilla Taylor also played pivotal roles on the day, as the goal scorers Old Geelong. Sienna Tedde provided the spark for the Sharks to get them going in the second half, with Lauren Haringsma and Caley Ryan also stepping up.
Old Melburnians have made a statement to the competition with a commanding performance against Old Haileybury, defeating the Hearts by 68 points.
Kicking the game off with a 3-goals to 0 first term, the Omelettes put on a masterclass as they consistently piled on the goals while only allowing Old Haileybury to kick 2 for the day. It was a contrasting performance by Old Haileybury, who almost beat the top side Beaumaris the previous week.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 24 DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S Access Team Lists on GameDay via VAFA.com.au
Charlotte Ferrier (4 goals), Ellen Williams (4 goals) and Sophie Fraser (5 goals) were relentless all day, and deservedly recognised as the best players for Old Melburnians. Bridget Hanrahan was best for Old Haileybury in their tough loss.
With only one round of the regular season remaining, who will end their season on a high?
Marcellin OC will get a chance to rest tired bodies before finals start, with a forfeit already being declared for their game against Hampton Rovers.
Old Geelong will host Old Xaverians at Como Park, with Old Xaverians requiring a win to escape relegation. While Old Geelong cannot make finals anymore, they would want to end their season on a positive note with another win.
Old Camberwell Grammarians will travel to Elsternwick Park to do battle with Old Melburnians. Old Melburnians will be seeking a big win with the aim of clawing their way into the top 2, but with nothing to lose, Old Camberwell will be hoping to spoil the Omelettes’ party.
Hawthorn AFC have one more chance to notch a Division 1 win when they play off against Old Haileybury next week. While Old Haileybury would be the favourites for this match, they showed signs of burn out in their match against the Omelettes this week.
The match of the round is sure to be the battle between top two sides, Old Brighton, and Beaumaris. Last time the two sides met, Beaumaris were the better side by four points, but Old Brighton are arguably in their season best form and will have a lot to play for. A loss holds the potential to see Brighton drop out of the top two.

The Unicorns soar to keep the Friars in fifth
As we hone in on the pointy end of the season, there is a lot to play for, and not a lot of time to play for it. A win for Brunswick sees them retain second spot at this stage, however, in the same breath, South Melbourne Districts being defeated has left them precariously holding on to that elusive fourth finals position.
Brunswick and South Melbourne Districts hit the ground running on Saturday afternoon, with both sides getting plenty of the football. However, inaccuracy in the first gave Brunswick a handy 17-point lead heading into the first huddle.
The tables turned in the second and the Bloods got their skates on, producing a 6 goal to 1 quarter. After both teams held time in front, the third term seemed to be the leveller with just a point in it. Anthony Alexandris led from the front for the Nobs with 4 goals to his name for the day, while Jamie Brooker (3) dominated in front of the big sticks for the Bloods.
Brunswick came home with the chocolates in a 12-point victory over South Melbourne Districts. With both teams very much in finals contention, they’ll be looking to iron out any niggles over the final three rounds of the home and away season.
Home ground advantage will be an edge for both sides, as SMD host St Mary’s Salesian and Brunswick match up against Old Paradians.
Still chasing their third win for the season, Aquinas put together a valiant 4-quarter display against the Old Yarra Cobras, but it was not to be. With a lead change at each break, it really was anyone’s game, but it was the Cobra’s composure in the final term, kicking 5 goals to 2 that saw them over the line at the final siren, 10 points ahead.
Nick Zappala was best on ground after a strong performance for his side, while Anthony Raso starred with 4 majors. For Aquinas, Flack, Robertson, and Baxter all kicked 2 for the day.
Aquinas were the most accurate in front of goals in Division 2 for the round, registering only 1 behind. However, they faced a deficit in scoring shots and will be looking to get more of their hands on the ball this Friday night as they take on Bulleen Templestowe under lights. While the Old Yarra Cobras will host MHSOB.
Moving right along and all the way to Garvey Oval where Old Paradians faced Bulleen Templestowe. With both sides unfortunately out of finals contention, it is a matter of finishing the season strong and refining skills.
Parade had 8 individual goal kickers, combining for a total of 13 majors, ably led by Straun Thompson and Blair Healy. They took a lead early and maintained throughout to come home with a 13-point margin.
At the other end of the ground, Jack Cowell put on a masterclass earning himself 4 majors and a spot in the best. Daniel Banister joined him, for his fifth time named in the best for the Bullants.
Round 16 presents a challenge in the form of Brunswick for the Old Paradians. While the Bulleen have a 6-day break before they run out on Friday night to face Aquinas.
The steam train is not showing signs of slowing down as Parkside registered their 10 th straight win on the trot, defeating St Mary’s Salesian by a comfortable margin. Whilst the match started relatively slowly, Parkside revved the engine in the second, to slot 9 straight to the Saints’ 1.1.
Ben Radford’s impressive 5-goal performance further extends his lead on the leading goal kicker tally, while Matthew Holden was yet again best on for Parkside. As for the Saints, Nick Alexopolous was the only multiple goal-scorer and Jack Elliston continues to shine for his side even on tough days.

St Mary’s Salesian will travel to Albert Park in Round 16, the home of the South Melbourne Districts, as Parkside also play away against the Whitefriars.
Rounding out the weekend was a high-scoring affair between the middle order in MHSOB and Whitefriars. A win for the Friars would have secured them a top 4 seat with three rounds remaining, although it was not meant to be, with the Unicorns too strong on this occasion.
Melbourne High looked to the likes of club stalwarts Lachlan Dowling and William Hellier to get their side over the line, delivering 6-goal and 2-goal best on ground performances respectively. Even with 5 multiple goal scorers, headlined by Samuel Kieseker, it wasn’t enough to get the Friars over the line.
Whitefriars remain in finals contention and are hot on the heels of South Melbourne Districts, only separated by percentage. This will no doubt be at the forefront of their minds as they head into a tough challenge against the Old Yarra Cobras. While the Whitefriars will be looking to use this momentum when they come up against ladder leaders Parkside in Round 16.

Elsternwick go a game clear in top spot
Mathematically… it’s not over yet.
Round 15 of VAFA footy saw the top of the table get a change up, whilst the gap back from fourth to fifth now hangs on a knifes edge.
The battle of the Finals spot went into overdrive this week between Wattle Park and Power House, with the Animals keen to shut the door and throw away the key on their final spot.
For Power House it was a great start with the likes of Joseph Halloran and Jeremey Hill doing their bit to steer the side strongly in the first half, trailing the Animals by just five points into the half.
Coming out of the break Wattle Park found their form with a slew of goal kickers managing to find the big sticks and sit three goals clear coming into the final change, where the Animals managed to take a stronghold on the game and run out 25-point winners and all but guarantee a finals birth in 2023.
Next up was a battle of the top, with Hawthorn looking to get one over Canterbury in 2023. Meehan and Raiti were at the helm of the Hawks push as two of the leading goal scorers in the league, taking on Tom Lowden and Jordan Dear headlining the Cobras attack. The first half left the sides hardly separated with the Hawks going in ahead, but when push came to shove late in the piece it was Hawthorn who managed to do what no other team has in 2023. They ran over the top of the Cobras in the last, piling on 41 points to dominate the contest and get one back on the former ladder leader.
Next up, in the battle of the Universities with La Trobe and Swinburne going head-to-head at La Trobe’s home ground for a Saturday afternoon.
It was a slow start for the home side not managing to slot one between the big sticks in the opening quarter, before finding their feet in the second with 7 majors to lead into the main break.
From there on out the Trobers’ didn’t look back, managing to keep a fast-moving Swinburne at bay and secure their third win of the season, just two behind Richmond Central with three rounds to go.
The final game of the round saw Elsternwick face off against Richmond Central with Elsternwick looking to continue their winning streak, with three rounds remaining in the season.
Inaccuracy cost the visitors early with eight behinds, but it didn’t take long for Elsternwick’s big hitter Spencer Hankin to send them flying all afternoon long, rounding it out with 7 majors to his name for his biggest bag of the season.
With Canterbury going down to Hawthorn, Elsternwick now sits outright at the top of the table with only two losses for the year. It is a top of the table clash this coming Round in what could be a finals preview. Other match ups see Hawthorn travel to Ross Gregory Oval to face Power House, whilst La Trobe play host to Wattle Park. Rounding out Round 16, Swinburne will meet with Richmond Central for the third time this season.

Eley Park win an epic as Falcons make their move
The first match of the round saw the division’s two top sides face off as North Brunswick hosted Box Hill North at Allard Park. Both sides got off to a slow and steady start, and although they had 3 more scoring shots than their opponents, the Bulls were unable to convert on the scoreboard, but they still held an 8-point lead at quarter time. The second quarter was one that was all North Brunswick as they added on 4 goals for the quarter, extending their lead out to a very handy 29 points.
In the third term, the Bulls were able to replicate their previous efforts, keeping the Demons to a single goal whilst also adding 4 of their own to extend their lead out to 52 points. The Bulls simply continued to do what they do best and that’s playing their ruthless brand of football. After an early few goals, the Bulls put not just their foot but a brick on the accelerator as they rampaged home with a massive 14 to 2 goal final quarter in what is a scary look for their upcoming opponents. In the end, after a steady first half and a dominant final quarter, it was the Bulls that ran out winners over the Demons by a whopping 128 points, their fourth largest win this season.
Andrew Ramzy dominated the Demons in front of goal with 7 majors. Jareth Ombiga was also a major contributor with 5 goals, and teammates Luke Russell (3), Christopher Sanders (2) and Jake Horwood (2) also contributing. For the Demons, Ethan Hocking had 2 majors whilst Jack Dullard, Timothy Inglis and Kyle Hocking all found their way onto the scoreboard with a goal. In the best for the Bulls were Simon Woodward, Samuel Watt and Adam Tsardakis. In the best for the Demons were Corey Bull, David Edwards and Marcus Lorkin. The Bulls will now face the next most in-form side as they take on Albert Park away. The Demons will look to rebound as they take on the Sharks who are coming off a massive win.
The second match of the round saw one of the most exciting matches take place this season as Masala faced off against Eley Park in what was a high-scoring epic. The first quarter saw both teams with strong starts as a
fast-paced quarter saw 11 goals kicked between the sides culminating in a 3-point Masala lead as the teams went into their huddles. The second quarter saw the Sharks fight tooth and nail to swing the game back into their favour as they added 7 goals for the quarter to take an 8-point lead into halftime.
Coming off the main break, the words of coach Matty Embling lifted the Sharks to another level as they were able to continue to build with a 5-goal to 3 quarter, extending their lead out to 20 points, and setting the scene for a major final quarter. The final quarter played out the only way an epic game should, with an epic goal for goal shootout. And just like that, the Tigers changed the rhythm to get the game on their terms, sneaking in 3 extra goals to take a four-point lead with 3 minutes left on the clock. However, for the Tigers, it wasn’t meant to be as a stunning goal on the run from the Sharks was enough to seal the game as Eley Park ran out winners, holding on to the final stages with a thrilling 2-point victory in a high scoring affair.
Tom Williamson led the way up forward for the Tigers with 6 goals. Luke Decarne and Amir Bou-Karroum were also major contributors with 4 and 3 goals respectively. Kane Scanlon was able to hit double digits with 10 majors (only the second player this season to achieve the feat). Tom Johnston had 3 goals for the game with teammates Aaron Williams, Harrison Ellis and Bailey Bowyer kicking 2 goals each. In the best for the Tigers were Tom Williamson, Brandon Kelly and Henry Kuner whilst in the best for the Sharks were Kane Scanlon, Blake Reardon and Jake Wakeling. The Tigers will now face the JOCs in what is essentially a winner takes all clash whilst the Sharks will look to capitalise on this winning energy as they host the Demons.
The final match of the round saw Albert Park take on St Johns in a match that would start to give shape to the top 4. The first quarter saw both teams have no troubles at all when it came to hitting the scoreboard with the Falcons kicking 5 goals and the JOCs kicking 4. Although two teams went into their huddles it was almost as if only

the Falcons came back onto the field, as they produced a dominant quarter, kicking 5 goals to 1 and extending the margin from 9 points to a comfortable 31-point lead heading into the major break.
After a dominant second quarter, the Falcons stepped on the accelerator even harder with a 9-goal quarter. The JOCs however, put up somewhat of a fight with 4 goals of their own. The 9 Falcons’ goals however were enough to extend their lead out to a mammoth 65 points. The final quarter saw both sides up their defense, as a tough back-and-forth 30 minutes of football saw the Falcons go scoreless for the quarter whilst the JOCs only managed to kick 1 goal of their own to slightly reduce the difference to 61 points. In the end, it was the Falcons that gained the victory in what is a significant win for the Falcons as they just about secure their spot in the Division 4 finals.
In his first game back from injury, Falcon Jack Lee dominated up forward with 6 goals. Joshua Beets (4), Drew Pearman (2), Alistair Lupo (2) and Ashley Evans (2) were also major contributors. Benjamin Ayache was the man in charge up forward for the JOCs with 4 goals. Liam Salisbury also helped run the forward 50 with 30 goals of his own. In the best for the Falcons were Alexander Evans, Paul Hutchins and Drew Pearman. In the best for the JOCs were Daniel Cattolico, Michael Horton and Corey Ely. The Falcons will now face their biggest challenge as they host the Bulls. The JOCs will look to rebound as they face cross-town rivals Masala in one of the most important games of this season so far.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Charlie Vague (St Bernards)
150
Pat O’Sullivan (St Bernards)
Congrats to Pat O’Sullivan on his 150th VAFA game week. A Strathmore Junior ‘‘PO’S’ moved to ‘the pit’ in 2012 to play Colts &19s before progressing into open age footy in 2016. A popular clubman ‘‘POS’’ has mixed Ressies and Thirds footy where his pace and ability to find plenty of the footy have contributed to the side’s success this season. Well done “POS”
Best wishes to Charlie on his 150th VAFA game this week. A St Bernards Junior Charlie made his senior debut in 2016 and during that season won VAFA State Under 19 Rep honours. A member of our 2018 Senior Premiership side, Charlie’s ‘hard at it’ approach inspires his teammates and has enabled him to become a key weapon in our Senior line up in recent seasons. We look forward to seeing Charlie add many more to his tally into 2023 and beyond. 150

Caulfield continue their late season surge
Where did the time go? There are now only 4 weeks left in the U19 Premier home and away season.
The momentum shift from the Caulfield Grammarians has taken the competition by storm. They defeated the top placed St Kevin’s in a superb contest at T H King Oval on Saturday. St Kevin’s remain one game clear but have endured a challenging few weeks. Old Xaverians, St Bedes/ Mentone, and Caulfield round out the top four heading into round 15.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers def. St Bernards by 107 points.
Another superb showing by the Tigers who have been one of the more consistent sides of U19 Premier in 2023. They simply demolished the struggling St Bernards under lights last Friday evening. SBMT showcased their forward talent with 19 goals registered on the scoresheet. St Bernards were only able to convert 3 majors for the duration of the contest.
St Bedes and Caulfield remain the ‘bolters’ of the U19 Premier section. Both have been able to capture remarkable form on the eve of finals. SBMT’s dynamic forward line continues to impress. as J. Harding and H. Gleeson combined for 8 majors. Whilst O. Moodie and M. Sullivan continue to serve as a headache for opposition defenders.
St Bernards will be relegated at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Though this may be viewed as a negative by some, it will give the team and opportunity to reload and reassess for next season. T. Lowrie was best afield for St Bernards, with a terrific individual season under his belt.
SBMT travel across the bridge to face Williamstown next week. St Bernards will face Old Xavierians at home.
Old Brighton def by. Williamtown CYMS by 5 points.
Williamstown prevailed in a windy and low scoring affair at Brighton Beach Oval last Saturday. Old Brighton was on the wrong side of the tug of war but showed plenty of positive signs.
The CYs now sit sixth on the ladder and are desperate for a finals berth in 2023. They have a reasonably tough run home but are a more than capable finals outfit. N. Sayers, A. Williams, A. Fernandes, S. Sarandopoulos, F. Lodge & K. Sullivan were all outstanding in a tough, back-and-forth contest.
Finals may now be just out of reach for Old Brighton. They started the year with high hopes but have fatigued over the course of 14 weeks. They’ll be disappointed how this season has progressed but were admirable against the CYs. J. Campigli had another stellar outing, a shining light for Old Brighton’s future.
Old Brighton faces an in-form Caulfield this weekend. The CYs host SBMT at home.
Old Xaverians def. Old Scotch by 39 points.
Xavier has secured a comprehensive win on the eve of finals. They have cemented themselves in the second position and are primed for a successful finals appearance. Old Scotch are unlikely to play finals at the conclusion of this season but are also victims of such a competitive section.
A solid team outing by the Xavs will instil their confidence in the pursuit of a premiership. They have depth across every line and utilised it well against Scotch. W. MacIsaac slotted 5 in a colossal display.
The eighth placed Scotch will be disappointed to find themselves in their current position. They are a talented outfit who has showed spurts of talent and skill throughout the season. They are a team to keep your eye on next season. W. Hucker, J. Harker, N. Glenn, O. Iser, C. Ferguson & M. Mayes played their best in a tough afternoon for Old Scotch.
Old Xavierians will look to notch up another win against St Bernards in Round 15, while Old Scotch will clash with Uni Blues.
University Blues def. De La Salle by 77 points.
A win over De La Salle makes the race to finals even more interesting, with 5th, 6 th and 7th on the ladder, all just 1 win outside a coveted top 4 position. A cohesive Uni kept their opponent to just 3 goals the entire afternoon. The Uni Blues now sit in fifth, clawing their way to finals. Uni’s spread and ball use across Melbourne University Oval was elite. De La simply struggled to keep up. This performance proved the Uni Blues is a finals standard team. A. Dowsley continued his monster season with 4 majors.
De La Salle is another team feeling the effects of a long and hard season. They only registered 7 scoring shots for the duration of the contest, 6 of which came in the second half. A. Liakakos, S. Cross, J. Pickles, E. Mcmahon, L. Liakakos, H. Mounas were all commendable in a losing side. De La Salle will face St Kevin’s this weekend. Uni will look to knock off Old Scotch.
St Kevin’s def by. Caulfield Grammarians by 36 points.
The Caulfield Grammarians are on a roll. They now sit in fourth after an impressive few weeks. On the other hand, SKOB have shown some worrying signs after dropping some important games. However, their dominant start to the season has them still sitting comfortably on top, one game clear of second.
A flat first half from SKOB was costly. They conceded 3 goals and couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities. They’ll look to reassess ahead of next week. The ever-consistent N. Tonge, M. Adams, J. Romanin, H. Kirkwood, O. Gill and B. Ball did all they could to try lift the standard for SKOB.
Caulfield have peaked at the right time. Their team is working in unison, creating numerous scoring shots up forward. There were 9 goal kickers in total, signs of an unselfish and discipline team. W. Brown slotted 3 majors.
Caulfield will look to continue their streak against Old Brighton in round 15. SKOB will play De La Salle away.
