ESTATE M A NAGE R’ S RE P O RT

ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT Welcome to this edition of the Grapevine. With the summer holidays in full force, rest and relaxation will be the order of the day, and families will have the opportunity to spend some quality time together. WORDS BY TE RRY KE L L E R

It’s at this time of the year that we are able to look back over the past twelve months and review how far we have come on the estate, what our highlights were and how we have adapted to the ever-changing environment we live in. Val de Vie has hosted many prestigious events this year ranging from polo tournaments to the final stage of the ABSA Cape Epic. The Pearl Valley Golf Course remains a firm favourite with both local and international golfers and in spite of the drought conditions being experienced, the team has been able to utilise the vastly reduced irrigation quotas to turn out a spectacular playing surface month in and month out. Our golf team are expecting the course to be very busy, welcoming members and guests to our magnificent estate. Some wonderful new facilities have been opened to further improve the offering on the estate including the Mantis Hotel and the Conference Venue at the golf club, both greatly improving the experience of visitors and corporate companies. The opening of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Lounge has provided a much improved venue for Club Prize giving and a more formal adult dining area for residents seeking a break from the little ones. The L’ Huguenot Venue &Vinoteque offered monthly Unwind Friday and wine pairing evenings that have been very successful in drawing the community together in a relaxed fun environment. 04

GRAPEV IN E

Let’s not forget the Fleet coffee shop for those who require their morning caffeine fix, now offering wifi to clients. By this time next year there will be even more facilities to report on, always in the endeavour of providing our residents with a world class experience, a lifestyle offering second to none and a safe and secure estate in which families will have a wide array of choices to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Estates around the country are finding that there is an expectation from residents to cater for a wider list of leisure activities, fortunately here on Val de Vie we cater for just about everyone. Our focus is on our residents and their families and providing a place where children can still ride bicycles in the street and meet their friends and play in the park until supper time. It is such a pleasure to see little boys playing touch rugby and bicycles on front lawns; it reminds one of a time long ago when things were simpler. High on our priority list over the summer period will be the critical water situation the Western Cape finds itself in. Our estate has very carefully allocated the muchreduced irrigation quotas to keep the most critical areas of the estate sustained and we are expecting some die back.

Our emergency water sustainability program is well advanced and we continue to appeal to all our residents to make every effort to save water. It has been gratifying to see the number of very resourceful residents making plans to utilise grey water and rain harvesting tanks, thank you for your efforts. After a long and tiring year, I would be amiss by not thanking our staff who make it all happen. From the security team to the restaurant staff, the landscapers, golf maintenance and operational team, facilities and maintenance and of course the office staff dealing with finance to marketing and events and everything in between. Thank you to the entire team for your hard work this past year. Thank you to our residents who support our efforts and engage with us on a wide range of topics. To our Trustees who give of their time to serve the community and the members of the various sporting clubs who hold office, thank you for your time, it is much appreciated. Finally, a request to all our residents who are travelling over the holiday season, please drive with care, take it easy out there and come back refreshed and energised, 2018 is going to be a cracker year.

LOOKING FORWARD “If you have more than you need, bless someone else who has less.” What an incredible year it has been for Val de Vie homeowners and the Foundation. As we look forward to 2018, we can proudly say that we truly came of age in 2017. Here are some recent highlights. WORD S BY LORRA I NE HA D FI E L D : VA L D E V I E FO U N DAT IO N A DV I S O R

The Foundation supports Mosaic and hosted two homeowner tours to the Mosaic charity facilities in Northern Paarl. We were delighted to have 18 homeowners give up a Friday afternoon in October and November to experience first-hand the wonderful work done by Mosaic. With over a third of all children in South Africa having lost one or both parents, Mosaic has developed a self sustainable alternative care model by empowering foster families. This is done through the Mosaic housing program where new homes are constructed for orphaned children to live in. The community is also uplifted through activities at their community centre such as after school programs, nutritious meals and a Recycle Swop shop where children pick up recycling waste to exchange for points to be redeemed for much needed groceries.

barely able to make ends meet to keep the school running. We were so impressed with the beautifully well-kept school, the passion of the teachers and their model learners.

We also joined hands with Nedbank, Rotary and Paarl Build It to complete a new staff room and sick bay at Ronwe Primary school which is a stones’ throw away from Val de Vie near the Nederberg Estate. The head mistress and staff were overwhelmed by the support shown as, having only Farm School status, they are

The Val de Vie Foundation provides funding to Hope Through Action sports facilities in Groendal, Franschhoek and Mbekeweni, Northern Paarl. Our signage is proudly located at both these centres where local children are encouraged to grow, develop and become community role models through the power of sport.

The estate is also proud to support Lizl Naude of Lillyloompa. This local lass takes useable waste and turns it into beautiful eco products. Her dream is create a sustainable business to employ and train like-minded entrepreneurs thereby providing much needed employment in the Paarl- Franschhoek valley. The Foundation has offered support in the form of raw material from homeowner recycling and our local home builders drop off used wood for creative and artistic furniture. We also sponsored a table on Market Day for Lizl to showcase her products to the estate.

On a lovely spring day in October, Thursday 19th to be precise, we witnessed camaraderie and generosity on a scale never seen before in the Valley. This month’s Foundation showcase: Our 2017 celebrity golf day, exceeding our wildest expectations! On a lovely spring day in October, Thursday 19th to be precise, we witnessed camaraderie and generosity on a scale never seen before in the Valley. Our very own Ryk Neethling and his team organized and hosted a world class Golf Day and Auction in aid of the Foundation on our prestigious Pearl Valley Golf Course. The crème de la crème of South Africa’s sports personalities travelled from far and wide to enjoy driving, chipping and putting on our famed Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. These wonderful, generous sportsmen came for a very special cause. They came to support our recipient, 2nd Harvest, and to feed the vulnerable, hungry children of our valley who paradoxically live in the culinary capital of South Africa. Our sponsors, generous givers and community hearted golfers were moved to raise over R400,000 to provide 80,000 meals for pre-school children knowing that without investing in our local communities, we will not have a sustainable system in the Valley.

12

GRAPEV IN E

Val de Vie Foundation Founder, Martin Venter, described it best when he said: “The old charity funding model needs transformation. In order to be sustainable in the long term, charities need sustainable long term annuity income streams to reinvest in local communities. The Val de Vie model is to offer market related property investments to the wealthy and thereby bring the wealthy and poor together in one community where the one thrives with the other. By providing 1% of the value of all land sales and 5% of HOA levies to the Val de Vie Foundation, this model will continue to support the needy in the community and offer real employment for those equipped with the skills to support the estate.” We are honoured to live in the Valley of Life and to help realize this vision of creating a better life for all in the valley. JUST JACKIE Good taste never goes out of style. And when good taste surged to Jackie Burger-level, women of the Winelands embraced the opportunity to be in the presence of this ever-stylish icon. WO R D S BY T HE G R A P E V I N E T E A M

As the sun was setting over the L’Huguenot vineyards on 28 September 2017, guests dressed up in “something fabulous,” enjoyed chilled La Motte wines and delectable canapes. The warm, unassuming nature of the silver haired fashionista was evident as she introduced herself as “just Jackie.” Guests enjoyed her insights on the importance of sisterhood, women empowerment, inspiring confidence and being kind. Biutiful Aesthetics Centre, located in Paarl, presented a glamorous evening aimed at inspiring women of all ages to become better versions of themselves. Jackie spoke about mindful luxury and how women should weave this concept into their daily lives by applying gratitude and intuition to their careers, families and overall wellbeing. In an interactive session, Jackie touched on fashion and the fleetingness thereof and the true meaning of owning your style. Her take on materialistic possessions was refreshing: “I don’t have an elaborate closet, contrary to popular belief. I keep only the items that have an emotional connection to a memory.” Her personal account of attachment and dependency on a career that no longer inspired or served her, offered a glimpse of her life behind the scenes as previous editor of one of South Africa’s leading female glossy magazines. 19

Decor and dress code were reminiscent of an era of African opulence with touches of leather, linen, canvas and copper.

A gin and tonic station and delectable canapés kept guests refreshed as they watched the first match of the 2017/18 polo season. Team Serengeti/Suunto won the match against team Safari Outdoor/Val de Vie in the first game and team Swarovski won against Leica in the second game, setting the tone for many more exciting chukkas to come this season. On the 4th of November, the Cintron Pink Polo event in aid of breast cancer treatment took place. Once again, the polo didn’t disappoint with a nail-biting draw between team Cintron and team Vodacom. A big thank you to the Val de Vie Events team and our polo manager, Rob, for ensuring that these tournaments were a great success. Our highly-skilled polo players gave their horses a rest and attempted Bicycle Polo for the first time at Val de Vie at the Festive Market on the 12th of November. There was a substantial amount of laughter and a few falls but overall an enjoyable experience with loads of support from the sidelines. Thank you to everyone who joined us at the final market of 2017. A blessed Christmas and happy holidays to all. We look forward to seeing you on next to the polo field in the new year!

EQUESTRIAN LIFESTYLE AT VAL DE VIE The Equestrian Centre has been getting busier over the last couple of months, seeing the return of our ‘swallows’. They have been enjoying early morning, recreational outrides on our well-schooled horses whilst they take in the beautiful scenery. We are delighted to welcome back their children who have been coming for lessons with us in the afternoons. WO R D S BY R O S E M A R Y B A R T L ET T

We want to encourage all residents to partake in recreational riding, even if you haven’t ridden before. If riding a horse is on your bucket list, or if you have ridden in your youth and would like to have a low key lesson just to get back into riding a horse, we encourage you to contact us. The most charming surroundings of our estate is seen estate on horseback. Competition Riding Our riders have been doing us proud at their respective shows during the month of November. Val de Vie resident, Laela Masson and her pony Desert Honey, took part in the South African Show Jumping Pony Champs which was recently held in Noordhoek. They finished on the podium with two well deserved first places and the title of Champion and Victor Ludorum. Well done to Laela, who is coached by Nicky Bartlett. The Interschool’s Show took place at the end of November. Morgan Grieve from Pearl Valley represented her school, Bridge House, with her pony Dhanji Magique. This is a new partnership and only their second time together. They finished with a commendable 3rd and 4th in their classes. Well done to Morgan and Magique! The new Val de Vie Pony Clubhouse and Riding School We are very excited to announce that the building of our new pony stables and riding school clubhouse on Val de Vie is well under way and is still on track to open in March 2018. We look forward to welcoming all pony enthusiasts on the big day. We will make sure to advertise the launch of the new stables ahead of time so everyone can join. Market Day Outrides Once again, the riding school brought out two of our seasoned ponies to give our young market goers a taste of what riding is all about. Riders as young as 3 and 4 years old enjoyed the gentle rhythm of sitting on the broad back of a

pony whilst the handlers walked along the outer track of the polo field; this allowed the riders to imagine what it would be like to ride in the wide open spaces of green fields. Make sure not to miss us at the next market day in February. The Excitement of having our very own Horse Trail on the Estate We have mapped out the first part of the horse trail and during the course of the next couple of weeks, we hope to have the whole trail under review. Once we have marked out the full section between the Pearl Valley and Val de Vie equestrian facilities the maintenance team will ensure that the footing is suitable for our horses. Before our equestrian clients know they will be able to enjoy picturesque rides along the Berg River framed by mountains views. GOLF DIRECTOR’S REPORT It’s official, our summer season is here. Many of our international members have returned and it has been great catching up and hearing their tales of travel. Our tee sheets are filling up as we start welcoming golfers who have traveled far and wide to come and experience Pearl Valley. We have implemented a new tee sheet management system this season and look forward to a smoother, more structured flow of golfers. Early morning tee times have also been blocked for members in preparation for the influx of guests we are expecting during our peak season. WO R D S BY DA M I A N WR IG L E Y

To all those that participated in the day, I thank you and look forward to seeing this event grow bigger and better every year.

Golf course news A great deal of work has taken place on the course this winter. The biggest projects were the reconstruction of the green side bunkers on holes 3 and 15. These changes really showcase what is planned for the rest of the greenside bunkers in time as we wish to shallow out the entry points. A number of servitude paths were completed making it easier for residents and course workers to access the course. Mike and has team also decided to bring in additional labour force to assist with all the projects. Last year we tried to do all work internally and as a result the course condition suffered. This year our team focused just on course conditioning and improving the playing surface. This decision certainly paid off as our golf course is looking superb for the summer season. One of our areas of focus is to see our course improve in the Golf Digest, Top 100 Golf Courses in South Africa, rankings. We hosted the Golf Digest panel at Pearl Valley twice this year and believe we are on the right track to improve our ranking. In the meantime, we wait with bated breath to hear the results, scheduled to be released in February 2018. The Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day presented by Safari Outdoor This year our course attracted some top celebrities and sports personalities to play in this prestigious golfing event. Each year the Val de Vie Foundation chooses a local charity or organisation in the V Valley as recipients of the proceeds raised on the day. This year 2nd Harvest Food Bank at the Paarl of Skills was selected. This organisation has made it their mission to eradicate hunger in the Valley. A fundraising target of R400 000 was set by our Marketing Director and Shareholder, Ryk Neethling.

This target (twice the amount that was raised in 2016) was reached and allows over 100 000 meals to be distributed to hungry Valley children. A massive thank you to those who so generously donated auction prizes and experiences. A special mention goes to Mr. Adrian Gardiner, the Chairman of the Mantis Collection, who assisted in raising R120 000 through generous contributions to St Helena and on the Zambezi Queen. Matthew Pearce, MC and auctioneer, did an exceptional job in convincing guests at the gala dinner to open their wallets and give back to those in need. To all those that participated in the day, I thank you and look forward to seeing this event grow bigger and better every year.

Pearl Valley victorious in Winelands Challenge The Winelands Challenge final took place on Sunday t12 November at Arabella. Going into the final round team Pearl Valley was four shots ahead of Steenberg, braving tough conditions and strong winds from the North. After the first 9 holes Pearl Valley was still narrowly ahead but had to pull something out of the bag on the back 9 holes. The team did just this, playing some exceptional golf resulting in Pearl Valley being awarded the trophy as this year’s Winelands Challenge Winners! This is the fourth time Pearl Valley has won the event over the seven years it has been played. Well done to all who played and gave it their all. I am excited to go into my second peak season and we are ready for all the golfers who will be visiting our majestic establishment. I look forward to taking Pearl Valley’s golfing experience to a new level in 2018!

CELEBRITY GOLF DAY The Jack Nicklaus signature golf course at Pearl Valley enticed A-listers and sports personalities to play their best game of golf in the Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, presented by Safari Outdoor on the 19th of October. Upon arrival golfers received a customised box with essential golf items and branded Swagg Lifestyle shirts. A shotgun start at 12:30 for the four-ball teams was followed by on course activations and some good (and some not so good) golf over 18 rounds. The Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, presented by Safari Outdoor, in aid of The Val de Vie Foundation provides support for a better life for all in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. It was decided that proceeds from the 2017 Celebrity Golf Day would go to 2nd Harvest Foodbank at the Paarl School of Skills who have made it their mission to eradicate hunger in the Valley. In light of the current drought, the worst in the recorded history of the Western Cape, extreme water restrictions could result in job losses in the near future, due to a potential drop in agricultural produce. This could lead to even more children in the Valley in need of food. The juxtaposition that exists in the Franschhoek-Paarl Valley as the culinary capital of South Africa and the poverty and hunger within this same area, is an issue The Val de Vie Foundation is deeply engaged in to transform.

POKE A TASTE OF JAPAN IN PAARL Every member of my family is an addict: wife, son, daughter, and myself. Our addiction, as things go, is relatively benign. From a cost perspective, it can approximate narcotics, but it’s much healthier. In fact, it’s arguably the healthiest diet around. We can’t go more than a couple of weeks without a ‘fix’ of sushi (side story – we first met Jeanine, one of the restaurant supervisors at Pearl Valley, when she was a manager at Takumi). WO R D S BY O S C A R FO U L KE S 48

GRAPEV IN E

R E STAU R A NT

The eating experience is very similar to sushi, so it’s no surprise that Poke has become hugely popular worldwide.

We often get our fix in the form of what we call “home sushi”, although it’s more accurately described as Temaki. We cook the rice, slice up avocado and cucumber, as well as tuna and salmon, all of which gets put down the middle of the table. Some of us make rolls (i.e. maki), but it’s far easier to just load up a small square of nori with rice, fish and avo, fold it to keep the contents inside, and then eat it by hand. This is similar to eating crispy duck Chinese pancakes, or mini taco filled at the table. None of us is pretending to be a sushi master. This is more about assembling the popular components, without getting too hung up about the aesthetics.

It may be a while before Paarl gets its own Poke restaurant. Until then, watch out for Poke and Temaki on our restaurant specials’ boards.

THE BLACK BAR AT THE POLO CLUB RESTAURANT Direct Phone Number: 021 863 6174 Mari Smit – Restaurant Manager poloclub@dishfood.co.za

The two most important components are the fresh fish (yellowtail is also great when it’s super fresh) and the rice. Once one has these components it’s not a big jump to Poke (pronounced POH-key).

Operation Hours Monday – Closed Tuesday – 11:00 - 16:00 Wednesday – 11:00 - 22:00 Thursday – 11:00 - 22:00 Friday – 11:00 - 22:00 Sunday – 09:00- 16:00

These days, we seem to be inundated with ‘deconstructed’ dishes. I’ll save the debate for another day, but it happens to be useful to make use of the word when explaining Poke.

THE VALLEY RESTAURANT AND BAR Direct Phone Number: 021 867 8046 Wilmien Smuts – Restaurant Manager pearlvalley@dishfood.co.za

Poke is most easily described as “deconstructed sushi” – a bowl of rice topped with marinated raw tuna or salmon, as well as avo and an assortment of fresh greens typically found in Asian-inspired salads. There may also be Goomae (sautéed spinach) or shiitake mushrooms for some extra umami, and the whole thing is liberally sprinkled with sesame seeds. Poke is a Hawaiian word that means ‘to cut’ or ‘to slice’ – or chopped, as a general term. This is what gets done to the toppings, so it all makes sense. The eating experience is very similar to sushi, so it’s no surprise that Poke has become hugely popular worldwide. There are even restaurants completely devoted to Poke.

How did you initially become interested in the wine industry? I fell in love with the wine industry working as a student at Beyerskloof. From there the exposure to the dynamic industry triggered something me and I signed up for a wine course through the University of Stellenbosch. After I completed my course I worked as a harvest intern for 4 months at the well renowned Durbanville Hills Estate. The feeling that I got on my first day, seeing the first grapes arriving at the cellar, made me realise that the wine industry is where I wanted to develop a career.

MEET BARBARA HUGO Over the past year Val de Vie residents have become well acquainted with our Experience Manager at L’Huguenot Venue & Vinoteque, Barbara Hugo. Noticing her natural flair at the popular Unwind Fridays and monthly Interactive Wine Classes, we quickly grew curious of her love for wine and people. Your job title at L’Huguenot may seem self-explanatory but what does your role entail? My main role at L`Huguenot is to manage wine sales to all residents – at special prices of course. In our portfolio at L`Huguenot, we sell the exclusive estate wines of both Val de Vie and Polo Club ranges as well as wines from La Motte Estate, Leopard`s Leap Family Vineyards and Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons. What do you enjoy about working at Val de Vie? To be part of a wonderful vision and the privilege to work on a world class estate. I love the people. They fascinate me and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to form personal relationships with all the residents that attend our events and purchase our wines. What is the concept behind Unwind Fridays? To create an informal, sociable event where people on the estate get to meet and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed setting.

WINE

What do you think interactive wine class participants gained from their experience? Participants were presented with an opportunity to stretch and test their own wine knowledge. From the most educated wine connoisseur to the social sipper – everyone could learn something new, while meeting new friends around a dinner table. What is your favourite wine and why? Every occasion calls for a special wine to be enjoyed, but I am very excited about the estate’s new release, a Bordeaux red blend, aptly named “The Valley of Life”.

Wine tastings, by appointment and at a moderate fee, are presented weekly from Mondays to Fridays, from 10:00 until 16:00, with the exception of Christian religious holidays. To reserve a tasting or to find out more about the Function Venues and the Vinoteque Wine-list, Barbara Hugo can be contacted at barbara@lhuguenot.com

UNWIND FRIDAYS AND INTERACTIVE WINE CLASSES Thank you to all of our Val de Vie Estate residents and neighbours who supported the popular Unwind Fridays and Interactive Wine Classes at L’Huguenot Venue & Vinoteque. We hope to see many new and familiar faces at our next events and be sure to smile for our ever-roaming Grapevine photographer, Daniel Saaiman.

Pilates (pronounced puh-lah-teez and not pie-lates) is a form of exercise that is focused on strengthening the body’s core — the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh. For this reason, Pilates develops much of what exercisers need — strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture — with a lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise. The attendees were gracious enough to pose as models for our Grapevine photographer Daniel, and from the images

it is clear to see that with so many exercise variations and progressions, one may have a hard time getting bored with this form of exercise.

ESTATE LIF E S T YLE

SECURITY REPORT In this edition of the Grapevine we would like to report on the considerable progress of our efforts and research to adopt technological and mechanical advances to enhance the performance of our estate security services. WORDS BY LOUI S D E JAG E R, RI SK M A NAGE R

It is certainly not a simple process and it will still be some time before the entire scope of the legal and practical implications of adopting new technologies such as drones, is fully understood. The company that we are consulting with for our research, supplies technology to the Kruger National Park Anti Rhino Poaching unit and we will keep our residents updated with the latest developments. At this stage, the application of a drone as an additional security measure, is to function as a multipurpose night vision camera that supports our tactical team on the ground. This will increase the range of the team’s nocturnal vision, enabling them to react to fence or reservoir triggered alarms, and eliminate the possibility of an ambush at night time. Our ongoing research to better equip our estate security team also includes considering the advances in smartphone and coded voice control devices as possible future security measures. The fencing that surrounds the Pearl Valley Boma area has been constructed and we hope to include that area in our Thermal Blanket surveillance to bring even more peace of mind for our visitors to that area with the summer season in full swing.

The festive season lies ahead and my wish for you and yours is that is an enjoyable one. A word of caution - rising crime rates outside of our estate is a reality and I want to encourage all our residents to be vigilant at all times. In conclusion, I re-iterate that your safety and security is paramount to our team and you can depend on our commitment to your peace of mind.

Louis de Jager Risk Manager for Val de Vie e: Louis.dejager@pearlvalley.co.za t: 021 867 8000

The re-validation and re-registration of the 336 grey access tag holders has gone exceptionally well and a heartfelt thank you goes out to those who sacrificed their time and co-operated in this regard. The dated Pearl Valley clubhouse CCTV system has recently been replaced and has proven to be extremely advantageous in assisting our team in monitoring the premises. We are confident with the busy season approaching that our team is fully equipped with the best technology to keep our residents and visitors safe. 76
