ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT As the Cape slips gently into winter we welcome you to this edition of the Grapevine. WOR D S BY TE RRY KE L L E R

I recently had the privilege of taking part in the ABSA Cape Epic as part of the Val de Vie Estate team. During the entire event we had comments from fellow riders, most of whom were familiar with the Estate and others who said that they hadn’t been to the Estate for some time and were eager to see how it had grown. The one overwhelming comment was, “I’m sure you can’t wait to get home”, and how right they were. On that final day, the sense of relief and immense joy of seeing the Estate from the top of the final climb is hard to describe knowing that all that remained was a short tricky downhill section and then the final run in via the Jack Nicklaus Boulevard. Finally crossing the finishing line after eight days of hard riding knowing you had made it and were home is something special. It made me think of what it means for residents to call Val de Vie Estate home.  At the end of a long day, being able to drive through one of the access gates, one is immediately struck by the calmness and welcoming environment. Things are orderly and neat, instilling a sense of peace and rest, a far cry from the madness and traffic of the city. Children play in the streets and parks, riding bicycles to visit friends, something unheard of in the suburbs of our country. It reminds one of a time when we were able to do that as kids.

Families taking an evening walk in the beautiful open areas and many pathways reinforces how fortunate we are to be able to have this quality time with little ones who grow up so quickly. Then there are all the activities that one is able to enjoy and partake in, these include the multitude of sport and fitness activities as well as social activities right here in our midst. Golfers meeting on the practice range in the evening to sharpen their game and take the days’ frustrations out on a little yellow ball right in their “back yard” is a very special privilege. The restaurants are going through a transformation and will strive to offer residents an array of food options and resident-focused offerings that will further enhance the experience of living at Val de Vie Estate and we have no doubt that these venues will become very popular and assist in community building. There cannot be many Estates internationally that offer the vast array of sport and recreational activities for residents to enjoy as is the case here at Val de Vie Estate. So as the first decent rain in a long time falls, I would encourage each and every one who calls Val de Vie Estate home, to explore a little, get out and about, sample the food, wine and coffee. It really is a very special place.

Despite challenging macro-economic factors, more than 95% of Val de Vie Estate developer stands have been sold out.

PROPERTY REPORT When our country moves through periods of positive change, the effect thereof is evident in the property market. The second quarter of 2018 has kicked off in full force with remarkable Val de Vie Evergreen sales as well as the solidification of Cape Winelands Properties’ relationship with our Mayfair International Realty team. WORD S BY CA P E WI NE L A N D S P R O P E R T I E S

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting two of our London office team members during the month of April. Nick Churton and Annette Reeve, our Mayfair International Realty partners, visited properties, met with clients and experienced the Valley of Life fully during their trip.

Later in this report is an article written by Nick which eloquently summarises his first visit to Val de Vie Estate and South Africa.

Since our last report, construction of the first homes within the Val de Vie Evergreen retirement village has commenced and the official site handover to the builders, Van Der Bilt Construction, took place on 20 April 2018. At the time of writing, 60% of the first phase of 81 homes were sold and Cape Winelands Properties are receiving unprecedented interest in what is destined to become South Africa’s premier retirement village. We have six stunning Reserve stands still available and starting from R2,995,000 for 2110m². All reserve stands are sold with water rights and offer true country living. One of the six stands left also offers owners the opportunity to keep four horses on a stand of 10,891m². Our rental team is currently presenting the largest stock variety since we started in business. We have homes, lodges and apartments to suit all budgets and needs. We have a dedicated team of resident rental experts and enjoy a 70% plus market share on the Estate with daily enquiries. We would love for you to read this article from our London partners following their return to the UK from Val de Vie Estate. Nick Churton and Annette Reeve of Cape Winelands Properties’ new London office visited Val de Vie Estate for the first time recently. Here Nick Churton gives some of their impressions: "This was the first time either of us had been to South Africa, and although very excited about our trip, we weren’t sure what to expect from the country or the residential estate we had been invited to visit. Despite the excellent marketing material, both printed and online, and the vivid and enthusiastic descriptions we had from the knowledgeable management and sales teams, we were still not prepared for what we found.

area began to reveal itself. Val de Vie Estate is a beautifully thought out and brilliantly executed project. As rugby plays such a large part in South African culture, and as an ex-player, I found myself comparing Val de Vie Estate with a large rugby club where there is a position for everyone. For the big players at Val de Vie Estate there are the outstanding Gentleman’s Estates. For the more compact players there are smaller homes in The Vines. And there’s everything in between at The Oaks, Polo Village, River Club and The Reserve. For those playing in the veteran’s side there is Val de Vie Evergreen. And for those setting out in mini rugby there is the opportunity to roam free, secure and out of danger in a safe environment. It doesn’t get better. With top class golf, polo and wine creating fabulous cultural diversions this is a truly first class ‘club’ with members who share the same interests. But first class is not world class. What makes Val de Vie Estate a world-class destination is its place in the unforgettable Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. In real estate there is an oft-used cliché about location, location, location. Hackneyed it may be but that doesn’t make it less valid or true. Ideally, location and property should go together like Van der Westhuizen and fly-half. At Val de Vie Estate they do. I thought of this as I watched the evening sun create long shadows and change the colour of the rocks on the sensational mountain backdrop. I thought of this as a family of baboons lolloped alongside the car as we drove past the vineyard. And I thought of it when we left – no longer strangers but fully paid up members of the Val de Vie Estate fan club. Leaving Val de Vie Estate, we found, was not easy. Leaving home is not easy. For a growing number of very fortunate people Val de Vie Estate and home are, or will soon become, one and the same."

“Our investment priorities mirrored our mission to fund youth development, mentor and fund entrepreneurs and help communities create jobs.”

We at the Foundation are passionate about investing for sustainable impact in the beautiful Valley we call home. This issue showcases how our “hand-up” has enabled the triumph of hope over hopelessness, reminding us all that life always offers you a second chance - it’s called tomorrow! As we move into our new financial year, we look back to our investment allocation in 2017/18, we also profile stories of hope from our partner Valcare and showcase a dream come true for the children of Groendal, Franschhoek enabled by our partner Hope Through Action. And last but not least we celebrate with five Mosaic families who now thrive in their very own brick homes. Our “hand-up” wisely invested This last financial year saw the Val de Vie Foundation invest R5.4 million into our community. Our investment priorities mirrored our mission to fund youth development, mentor and fund entrepreneurs and help communities create jobs. Together with our partners Valcare, Hope Through Action, Khula and Salt and Light, the allocation was as follows:

Valcare: Stories of Hope The Val de Vie Foundation partners with Valcare, an impact funding platform set up to activate and enable social change in a sustainable way. Through Valcare we help fund organisations like Christian NGO Monte Christo Miglat, that recently transformed the lives of a group of rebellious gang-related boys into “Paint Warriors.” Please go to www.valcare.org.za to read the entire story of a miraculous change of heart where these boys no longer wanted to be seen as “baddies”, but rather as part of a painting initiative to transform the neighbourhood and make a difference. Sweden welcomes our local football players! In July 2018 a group of local young lads will be jetting off to play football in Gothenberg, Sweden. The Gothia Cup hosts around 1700 teams from 80 nations in an international youth tournament. This meeting place for the world’s youth, irrespective of religion, skin colour or nationality, has football as the common denominator. We are honoured to be associated with a miracle that has been made possible by our partner Hope Through Action, as well as Score, Kususa and a local volunteer George Frett. The Hope Through Action Foundation and Score will provide preparation camps to inform the children about Sweden and its culture. This will indeed be an adventure of a lifetime for these underprivileged, but proudly South African, children. We wish them "Bon Voyage!"

“The day has finally come!” Saturday April 7th, 2018 was a landmark day for five Mosaic “families” when they each cut a ribbon outside the door of a spanking brand-new brick home in Newton, Paarl East. These orphaned and vulnerable children now have their very own “mother”, their very own home and no longer have to merely survive in a shack with an outside pit latrine. There was not a dry eye to be seen as these families were overwhelmed with emotion after waiting all their lives for a home to call their own. The Val de Vie Foundation provides financial support to Mosaic through our partner Valcare. We also recently reached out to our residents to help furnish these new

CATTITUDE Serendipity in the Valley of Life. WORD S BY T HE G R A P E V I N E T E A M Val de Vie Estate residents, Marieke Venter and Marli van Schalkwyk, discovered earlier this year - via social media and a mutual friend - that their cats share a birthday on 23 January. Upon making contact, Marieke and Marli learnt that the cat sisters live walking distance from each other in The Vines, wear identical yellow collars, and that their own birthdays in May are only two days apart. British Shorthairs Birdy and Katrien were purchased two years ago in Gauteng and relocated with their owners to The Valley of Life in 2018. They were recently reunited but in true feline fashion there was no love lost between the siblings.

“Canapés, champagne and enthralling polo were the order of the day.”

As one of only a few Veuve Clicquot polo events around the world, the 2018 event delivered a variety of unparalleled luxurious experiences and memorable moments. The day was perfectly suited to this year’s theme #ClicquotintheSun as glasses of chilled Veuve Clicquot champagne were enjoyed in the hot summer sun, with the exquisite Cape Winelands mountain ranges as the backdrop. The MC for the day, actress Nomzamo Mbatha, opened the event by welcoming the polo players in person. Polo commentator Mathew Pohl kept the spectators glued to the thrilling polo action. The talented line-up of international and local players enthralled spectators with the curtain raiser game where team Jaeger-LeCoultre won with a 6.5 to 1 victory against team Eva-Last Decking. Half a goal was given to Jaeger-LeCoultre on handicap. The main match featured South African national players Tom de Bruin, Leroux Hendriks and Jabulani Khanyile. Team Vodacom took the main match against team Veuve Clicquot with a final nerve-racking score of 10 to 9.

VIP guests enjoyed superb views of the fast-paced polo action.

Well known Dutch player, Aki van Andel was named the Most Valuable Player and Milo, owned and played by Shaun Brokensha, recognised as the day’s Best Playing Pony. Canapés and a variety of culinary delights, inspired by the theme of Cape Town Summer, were served throughout the afternoon while guests enjoyed the high-goal polo and show stopping fashion. Menswear designer Carducci Men and couture womenswear designer Jacques Lagrange Couture, wowed guests with a catwalk show on the polo field, while Guerlain, the Official Beauty Partner of the event, showcased the latest make-up trends. Associate Partner to the event, SA Tourism’s support along with Wesgro, ensured that the event attracted an international audience, positioning Cape Town alongside famous VCMP host cities like New York, LA, Miami and Dubai. E! Entertainment Africa host, Kat Sinivasan, chatted to VIP guests as they arrived on the ‘green’ carpet.

After an action-packed day of polo, the day ended with a surprise moment where guests got to celebrate Veuve Clicquot’s 200 Year Anniversary of Rosé champagne with a 6-tier pink and silver custom-designed cake. DJ Lloyd ensured the exquisite sunset behind the Simonsberg Mountains was accompanied by the perfect tunes, while guests joined for a last toast to #ClicquotintheSun.

Among the guests that attended the prestigious event was former Miss World, Rolene Strauss.

The VIP guest list included some of the world and continent’s most well-known personalities, such as Tony award-winning actress, Anika Noni Rose, Sincerely Ward, of WAGS of Atlanta-fame, Angolan singer Pérola Pearl and local entertainment stars Jessica Nkosi, Boity Thulo and Katlego Maboe as well as Rolene Strauss, among others. Tarryn Oppel and Emilie Gambade from Marie Claire SA, Michael Ellingworth, Market Manager for Moët Hennessy South Africa, and event co-owner and CEO of VIVID LUXURY, Anina Malherbe-Lan were all tasked with choosing the coveted Best Dressed candidates. The Best Dressed Female of the day was awarded to model Adeola Ariyo in striking black and white, the Best Dressed Couple were Pumi and Neil Körber in brights, while the Best Dressed Male award went to Zola Msizi in a pale pink three-piece suit. A difficult decision considering the incredible efforts made by all in their finest polo chic outfits.

Team Vodacom were victorious in a nail-biting 14 goal polo match.

This year also saw the launch of the first Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo golf day, hosted at Pearl Valley Golf Course as part of the Yellow Week build up. POLO MANAGER'S REPORT As with all good things, the 2017/18 polo season here has come to an end. We look back on an action-packed 7 months of competitive polo, the introduction of cycle polo, strong growth within the club and exciting prospects for the 2018/19 season. WORDS BY ROB HA M P SON

The main highlights for our last third of the season were the “Harcourts Winelands | Luxury Properties” Ladies Polo Tournament, the Cape Classic and Summer Cup 6 goal tournaments, and of course, the mighty Veuve Clicquot Polo Masters. We also saw a national change in rules and format to speed up the game and make it more exciting for spectators, but also safer for the horses by reducing high injury-risk periods of play. Our Ladies Tournament boasted the highest-level ladies polo in Southern Africa and was an absolute blast for both players and spectators. With players travelling from Kenya, Zambia, Argentina, Johannesburg and Plettenburg Bay, we were treated to some exceptional polo and a classy event. Team Moulin Rouge came out victorious, with Tiva Gross and Sally Jellis sharing the Most Valuable Player award. With the introduction of the new playing format at the beginning of the Cape Classic, our two 6 goal handicap tournaments and the Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo produced some incredibly fast and entertaining polo. The Cape Classic was won by Jason Drew’s Ignarus sed Ignatus team, and Most Valued Player awarded to young Josephine Susman who had a phenomenal weekend of polo. Val de Vie then came out victors of the Summer Cup 2 weekends later with our Polo Academy coach and professional Kevin Rixon winning the Most Valuable Player trophy, and George Morgan yet again taking the coveted “best string” of horses prize. But the highlight of the three weekends was another exceptional Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo match that entertained the 2000 plus crowd in attendance. In a nail biting game that went down to the wire, the Vodacom team put together by Martin Hartman, came out victorious by 1 goal in the final minute.

Our other highlight has been the successful introduction of Cycle Polo which is now being driven by an enthusiastic Val de Vie homeowner, with plans to setup a formal league starting next season. For anyone interested in playing cycle polo, they can contact the polo office: polo@valdevie.co.za With the good rain we’ve had the end of the season, it looks set to be a wet winter, which will help ensure another successful upcoming season in October. I wish you all a good (and wet) winter. Polo Greetings, Rob Hampson – Polo Manager

We were honoured to host the South African Laser Run and Modern Pentathlon Championships on 28th and 30th of April 2018 at Val de Vie Estate, a qualifying event for the 2020 Modern Olympics. A short background from the President of the South Africa Modern Pentathlon Association (SAMPA): "Just as the ancient pentathlon was based on the skills required to be a soldier, the modern pentathlon was devised to test the abilities required by a cavalry soldier. The pentathlon was first held in the ancient Olympic Games and consisted of running, long jump, spear throwing, discus and wrestling. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, created the modern pentathlon event, comprising of five events that continue till today. Athletes competed in fencing, swimming and horse riding, followed by a combined running and shooting event. With its mixture of physical and mental demands that test courage, stamina, coordination, concentration, skill and flexibility - this event has a very strong claim to producing all-round athletes. We are proud to be associated with Val de Vie Estate and its pristine equestrian facilities. For the past three years Rose Bartlett has facilitated our horse riding

event. With the variety of disciplines that took place at Val de Vie Estate this year, we are confident that this was our best event ever. We had Olympic athletes competing together with 10-year olds up to Masters at the age of 60 and over. Well done to Mandy Vroon, Western Province Pentathlete, for winning gold and earning her SAMPA Federation Colours. Alex Klopper, hailing from the Free State, won the award for Most Promising Athlete.

FROM THE DESK OF THE GOLF DIRECTOR Despite the severity of the drought we were able to present a product which was consistent throughout the summer season. A big contributing factor to our course holding up as well as it did was the incredible infrastructure that exists on the Estate. WO R D S BY DA M I A N WR IG L E Y, G O L F D IR EC TO R

Enduring a period of extreme drought was arguably one of the toughest challenges in my career. Having a predominantly cool season grass golf course and a holding dam that only carries seven days of water if not being replenished, will keep you up at night! As I sit here now and listen to the sound of rain failing in the background I feel a sense of relief and comfort. We lost a great deal of turf over the summer period but despite all our challenges we had a very successful financial year, with total rounds just over 36 000. When Pearl Valley was built it was with a purpose and vision. Many of you will not know this, but every single holding dam and body of water on the Estate feeds down to the 13th holding dam. A decision was made to drill for additional bore holes as well as hire a portable pump. Mike Westman and his team were able to fill certain dams at various low points on the Estate allowing the water to rise to the overflow points. Essentially we moved water to where we needed it to be. With this and the support of the developers who spared no cost in assisting us with whatever was required to keep the course alive, we made it through. Now it’s straight into recovery mode and rolling out projects. Our spring time aeration programme has just successfully kicked off and the rain that has accompanied the recent work has been well received. Just prior to hollow tining we seeded almost 2 hectares of rough area that had died off as a result of the lack of water, intense heat and high summer round numbers. 29

The newly revamped Golf Shop in the Pearl Valley Clubhouse.

The rough seed that we have chosen to use is a mixture of fescue and rye. After many trial growths and research it has proven to be the hardiest of the allowed varieties under the Nicklaus Signature brand and best suited to our environment. I would like to acknowledge and thank our Course Superintendent, Mike Westman, for going above and beyond to do whatever possible to ensure our course made it through the drought. The behind the scenes work, dedication and commitment is to be commended. As our clubhouse has slowly been upgraded it became evident that our Golf Shop also needed a revamp. With this being said the real motivation behind the change was all-round aesthetics which needed upgrading but more so the need for consolidated stock control. In the past deliveries were taken through the shop and stored all over. The new shop layout brings enhanced form and function in an environment that is geared towards the customer. The lighting is better, there are more display areas and counter tops, there is a better office environment for the staff, a large storage room and two change rooms which have been discreetly positioned. The shopfitters appointed for the project have done work for multi-national retailers, and their quality of work speaks for itself. Our recent Club AGM was well supported and very positive. I feel that the club is heading in the right direction and our home owners and golf members are enjoying the atmosphere at the club. This is evident in the participation reports and I am pleased to see more residents frequenting the restaurant and bar. 3 0 GRAPEVI NE

A part of the club’s success is the behind-the-scenes work that the Club Committee put into ensuring that the member’s voices are heard and are well informed of what is taking place on the Estate. This is a job that can be thankless at times. I would like to thank outgoing committee members Riz Majid and Chris McCann for their time served. The club now welcomes Dean Meyer as our new Club Captain. Joining him are Peter Smith and Jaco Van Rensburg. Dean grew up in Paarl and attended Paarl Boys’ Primary and Paarl Boys’ high for most of his schooling. He thereafter qualified as a Chartered Accountant at the University of Cape Town. In addition to golfing, Dean is an avid cyclist and will often be seen on his bike. ‘’It is a privilege to be announced as the Club Captain of Pearl Valley, particularly given its status as one of the best courses in the country. It is important to me that we continue to build on the good work of all the previous Captains and ensure that as a club, the experiences of our members match the status of the course and the Estate. Each one of our members, from the juniors through to the adults, from regular players to occasional players, need to feel part of the club. Initiatives and steps will be taken to help achieve this. Additionally, more prestigious events are in the planning process as well to raise our profile and excitement in the amateur circles. Finally, I would like to continue the club’s role in caring for and making a difference in our larger community within the Valley through the Captains Charity.’’ - Dean Meyer, Club Captain

The 40 golfers who participated in Pearl Valley's debut Night Golf event comprised of home owners and their guests.

The weather played along on the first Friday evening for the first Par 3 Night Golf event. Pearl Valley golf carts lit up the course, along with the colourful glow sticks that outlined the bunkers and greens. Glow in the dark golf balls were used which created a remarkable effect once they were hit into the night sky. After 9-holes of the first ever Night Golf, golfers enjoyed pizza and craft beer which was provided by Diesel and Dust.

The evening was not short of surprises as a team of ladies claimed victory on 51 points and to top it off we witnessed two Hole in Ones! Thank you to the Val de Vie Social Committee for organising the fun event and to Vanderbilt Construction for the sponsorship. Even in the dark, The Pearl showed off its incredible beauty! 33

Touches of 60’s style and fashion at the Pearl Valley Ladies Open Tournament.

“Val de Vie Estate welcomed 128 female golfers from across the country to great weather and a day of fun out on the course.”

Upon arrival, each lady was gifted with a Val de Vie Estate box, filled with treats, and a glass of MUMM Champagne. A photo wall was the next stop to capture the moment with their girlfriends. Whilst the ladies congregated and caught up, breakfast canapés along with Fleet coffee were served. The energy and excitement in the clubhouse was palpable. Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director and shareholder at Val de Vie Estate, welcomed all the ladies to the event prior to the shotgun start. On-course there was another photo opportunity where Volkswagen displayed a vintage caravan photo booth, filled with great props to capture the most memorable team photos. Following the round of golf, Camelot Spa at Val de Vie Estate welcomed the ladies back to the locker room to a much-needed complementary express manicure.

Once the 60’s inspired outfits were put on, Beefeater Gin cocktails were served upon entering the Conference Venue for the prize giving dinner. 'Gifting’ was at the order of the day from Camelot Spa goodie bags, Wedgewood nougat and rainbow cupcakes. The ladies danced the evening away to their favourite music which they selected from a juke box. Congratulations to the winning betterball pair Dee McGurk and Renee Goosen, you made the Pearl Valley Golf Team proud! Thank you to the generous sponsors, green keeping staff and all who contributed countless hours towards the preparation and success of this special day!

IN GOOD SHAPE Val de Vie Estate strives to provide residents with a vast range of lifestyle offerings and outdoor activities, catering to a diverse group of people, with different interests and pastimes. Running is arguably one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors, get fit or just explore one's surroundings to get a proper lay of the land. WORDS BY TH E G RA P E VI NE TE A M

Enjoy the natural surroundings our 917 hectare estate has to offer by running or walking some of our newly developed routes.

Val de Vie Estate boasts three different running routes that meander through the Estate, passing some of our world class facilities and future developments. Our residents and guests are welcome to explore the unrivalled surroundings in a secure setting when opting for the 7 kilometre or the 20 kilometre route. The Val de Vie Running Club, headed by our gym manager Corné Steenkamp, was started earlier this year. The club's intent is to firstly encourage residents of all activity levels and ages to get fit by running, and secondly to encourage participants to explore the Estate's trails while becoming part of a community. At a monthly fee of R120 the club welcomes all members to attend up to two sessions during the week, on a Monday evening at 6pm and / or a Thursday morning at 6am (remember to bring a headlight). The distances that are covered during the sessions range between 4 and 7 kilometres or 30 to 40 minutes. The different runs include: a 5km time trial, a 30-minute distance test, a 40-minute distance test and sprint intervals. It is a great way to run, have fun and meet new people. Whether you join the pack or prefer hitting the road solo, the running routes on the Estate cater for every fitness level from beginners to the more experienced. Here are a few tips from Corné to get you started, avoid injury:

Tips for beginners

•Find a running partner, to help motivate and keep you accountable; •Start by running for 1 minute and walking for 1 minute for thirty minutes 3 times a week; •Make an appointment with a podiatrist before investing in a pair running shoes for the correct orthotics recommendations; •Keep a log of all your runs so you can monitor your progress. There are a number of apps available on the Apple and Android app stores to keep track of your runs, try Strava; •Enter a race! Having a goal ensures dedication;

Tips to avoid injuries

•Do dynamic stretches before and after a session, holding every position for 20-30 seconds; •Drink enough water during a session (especially with the soaring day time summer temperatures in Paarl) to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion; •If you experience any unusual pain in your joints or muscles, rather stop running and walk for a bit before trying to run again; •Include strength-based exercises in your regular fitness program, not only to avoid injury or degeneration of muscles fibres but also to improve your running pace. “Riders found refuge in the Valley of Life, following 658 kilometres of traversing untamed routes and the natural splendor of the Western Cape.”

From the majestic slopes of Table Mountain to the magnificence of the Grand Finale at Val de Vie Estate with the addition of a manic time trial in between – the 2018 Absa Cape Epic route was balanced, bold and untamed. Starting with the Prologue on the iconic Table Mountain (where the Prologue was last held in 2015), the 2018 Absa Cape Epic visited Robertson, Worcester and Wellington, and finished at Val de Vie Estate. Riders spent three nights in Robertson for the first three stages, with a transition stage to Worcester, where they stayed for one night before settling down in Wellington until heading to the Grand Finale. The total distance of 653km with 13 530m of climbing included four consecutive days of over 100km, again featuring the Land Rover Technical Terrain sections on each of the eight days. The final stage was far from an easy roll to the finsh-line and a race of truth with the re-introduction of a time trial on Stage 5. In a break with tradition, the final stage of the Epic was not the easy day it has been in the past, taking riders from Wellington to Val de Vie over a testing 70km with 2000m of climbing, resulting in arguably the toughest Grand Finale in the 15-year history of the event. Riders found refuge in the Valley of Life, following 658km of traversing untamed routes and the natural splendour of the Western Cape. Both the men’s and women’s Investec Songo Specialized teams were victorious with Jaroslav Kulhavy (Czech Republic) and Howard Grotts (USA) showing impressive shape. In the corresponding women’s team Annika Lanvad (Denmark) and Kate Courtney (USA) made for a formidable combination.

As part of the final stage, riders passed over our iconic chukka clock when coming in to the finish line.

WELCOMING WINTER The inaugural potjiekos competition, an initiative by our home owners and the Val de Vie Estate social committee, took place on Saturday 19 May at the Pearl Valley Boma. WORDS BY T HE G R A P E V I N E T E A M

Potjiekos, literally meaning ‘small pot of food’ is deeply rooted in South African culture. Softly bubbling potjies on open fires set the scene at this year’s potjiekos competition where twelve teams - Energy Master Builders, Potluck, Potluck Too, Easigrass 1, Easigrass2,

Cycle Polo, Midas Earthcoat, Misfits, Welsh Wizards, Hot Pot, Brick Art 1 and Brick Art 2 – battled it out for the coveted first place.

‘‘The potjiekos competition was a great success with a unique variety of tasty dishes and wholesome family fun.’’

Teams prepared mouth-watering potjiekos dishes with many creative takes on a traditional potjie consisting of meat, potatoes and vegetables. Specialist potjie dishes included a seafood mussel potjie, spicy Mexican potjie, lamb neck potjie and deconstructed potjie. Val de Vie Estate residents – Ryk Neethling (Val de Vie Estate Marketing Director and Shareholder), Eugene Eloff and Gerard van Staden (The Valley Restaurant Chef) – judged the contestants on taste, inventiveness and presentation. Team Midas Earthcoat walked away as the winning team with their spicy Mexican potjie, the Misfits took second place and Brick Art third place. Team Easigrass were awarded for their ‘gees.’ Live entertainment, Diesel and Dust craft beer and a display by Easigrass of wildlife animal figurines covered in artificial grass, added to the convivial atmosphere of the event. Winners walked away with a selection of food and wine inspired prizes.

Taste the winning dish! The winning spicy Mexican potjie will feature on the Polo Club restaurant’s new menu during the month of June – a hearty meal for cold winter nights.

R ESTAURANTS

‘‘Returning home from our adventure in the UK, I realised again how fortunate we are with the constant supply of fresh and quality foods.’’

“The best fish and chips I ever had, really worth while trying!” writes a resident on the Val de Vie Estate Facebook group following a meal at one of our restaurants. Gerard has indeed made an impact on the quality of food and the level of service in both The Valley and The Polo Club restaurants.

The Valley Restaurant Monday to Saturday 07:00 – 21:00 (kitchen closes at 20:30) Sunday 07:00 – 20:00 (The kitchen closes at 19:00, pizza is served until 19:30) Contact: 021 867 8046 For enquries, please email: restaurant@pearlvalley.co.za

Over the past 35 years, Gerard has worked with some of the greatest chefs in the world who had a great influence on developing his cooking skills, knowledge and confidence. “Restaurant guests have sound knowledge of food and the preparation thereof, mostly thanks to cooking shows such as Masterchef and Chef’s Table. They arrive with heightened expectations and it is the responsibility of the chef to ensure that these expectations are exceeded, and to guarantee returning customers.” Gerard has worked in renowned establishments such as Le Franschhoek Hotel and the Beverly Hills Hotel, Umhlanga. He furthermore gained sound knowledge in the operational requirements of a restaurant that serves both golf clientele and residents while at Simbithi Country Club. A couple of years after heading up the kitchen in the Dunstan Hall Hotel in Norwich, United Kingdom, Gerard returned in 2018 to South Africa with his family. “Returning home from our adventure in the UK, I realised again how fortunate we are with the constant supply of fresh and quality foods, especially in the Cape region. I look forward to incorporating this produce into new and exciting dishes but staying true to the nostalgia that hearty meals epitomise.” A new chef will be joining The Polo Club restaurant early June, which means that Chef Gerard’s focus will be solely on The Valley restaurant.

A GROWING TREND

Farm-to-table (sometimes called farm-to-fork) is a term that broadly refers to food made from locally-sourced, natural or organic ingredients. The concept of consuming fresh, organic produce with the absence of harmful hormones, steroids and pesticides is destined to change the way we eat. WO R D S BY T HE G R A P E V IN E T E A M

63 G R A P E V I NE

ESTATE LIFEST YLE

Over two centuries ago, the practice of farm-to-table cuisine in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley was an everyday occurrence. The Dutch and French descendants were adept in what is known today as the philosophy of sustainable farming - cultivating their own food by rearing livestock and growing fresh produce. In recent years, this trend has become extremely popular as customers are more curious about the origin of the food they consume and the sustainability thereof. Crossing the new bridge from the Berg river gatehouse upon entering Val de Vie Estate, a 60-hectare piece of land will soon be transformed into an operating farm. Fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs will be grown in greenhouses with a centre pivot irrigation system providing water for crops. Cultivated pastures of Lucerne and Teff grass variety, amongst other types of forage, will provide grazing for livestock. A stud of Droughtmaster cattle, hailing from the Otjiwarongo district in Namibia, as well as a selection of Wagyu and Black Angus bloodlines will be incorporated into producing export-quality, free range and grass-fed beef.

6 4 GRAPEVI NE

Slaughtering and meat-packing will take place off-site at a licensed plant in the Paarl area where a variety of cuts will be aged in numerous ways. Wet-aged beef is vacuum-packed and matured at 4 degrees Celsius over 7 – 14 days as opposed to dry-aged beef that is hung to dry and aged between 15 – 62 days. The Deli at The Yard, opening towards the end of 2018, will offer this selection of wet-aged or dry-aged beef, cured meats, free range eggs, fruit, vegetables and herbs sourced from the Val de Vie Estate farm. The new restaurant at The Yard, as well as The Valley and The Polo Club restaurants will offer the concept of farm-to-table and seasonal menus dictated by the surroundings.

A new initiative by the Val de Vie Foundation is the opening of an agriculture skills development centre, situated outside the estate on the border of the Berg River. Students at the centre will enrol in agricultural programmes providing training and practical experience working on farms such as the one on Val de Vie Estate.

S A FETY & SEC U RITY

SECURITY REPORT A busy summer season has come and gone, and we are happy to report that our security team, with the assistance of our residents, dealt with fewer juvenile delinquency complaints. Incidents of swimming pool misbehaviour declined and visiting youngsters were noticeably better behaved this season. WORDS BY LOU IS D E JAG E R

In an effort to constantly improve our security access control systems, we are testing a facial recognition system which would be ideally suited for the contractor gates as biometric systems have difficulty in reading finger prints of people who work with their hands. Brick layers are especially difficult to process after a hard day's labour. Should this new technology prove successful, we will look to gradually migrate all contractors to facial recognition systems. For obvious reasons, this will ensure a much faster process, eliminating queues as well as undue delays at the gates as the process will avoid having to manually process a contractor’s entry and exit.  78 GRAPEVI NE

We are still a very long way from implementing this technology for general every day vehicle entry facial recognition and residents need not be concerned that we will change from the biometric system any time soon as it is still the access control system of choice. We would like to thank our residents for their continued support and look forward to being of service. We wish you a very wet and wonderful winter.
