ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT What a joy it has been to have a proper Cape winter again, the Berg River is flowing, we have had snow on the mountains and the rains have increased dam levels. WORD S BY TE RRY KE L L E R
Who said winters in the Cape are quiet? The past few months have seen frenetic activities on the Estate with the completion of the Berg River Bridge linking the Estate to the R45. The bridge was opened on June the 21st on a crisp clear winter's morning heralding a new frontier for the Estate. Along with the Bridge has come the impressive new Gate House complex housing the registration centre. The security technical team had been planning for many months to use the incorporation of the new Berg River Gate as the trigger to migrate the entire Estate to a single access control system merging two very large data bases onto one. Well, after many hours of around the clock work, our Technical Manager, Danie Bosman and his team, along with the supplier were able to finalise the migration. Val de Vie Estate was the first operation of this size in South Africa to migrate to the new platform and we are extremely grateful to our residents who were inconvenienced by this transition. We thank you for your patience and understanding. We expect that the new platform with its new server will ensure that the Estate’s access control system will perform optimally for many years to come. Once again, a huge thank you to Louis de Jager (Head of Security) and Danie Bosman (Technical Manager) for their many hours of tireless work during this time.

Let’s not forget the rest of our security team, from the ladies and gentlemen manning the gates, the responders, our tactical officers patrolling and testing our fence line 24 hours a day and the offsite team who monitor our thermal cameras protecting the entire Estate perimeter 24/7 365. It’s an immense operation, and our team take the task of keeping the Estate perimeter safe and secure very seriously. While all of this activity has been going on, our two chefs, Gerard van Staden and Scott Hendrie have been hard at work in The Valley and Polo Club restaurants. It is heart-warming to see the change in attitude of the waiters and kitchen staff, we have an air of positivity about the place and residents are showing their support. Chef Gerard’s curry evenings are a sell-out hit and Scott will be introducing his special evenings shortly. If you have not yet tried out one of our restaurants you are missing out, book a table and come and see what these two dynamic chefs are doing. It is our goal to offer our residents menus that cater not only for a family night out, but a dining experience that one can confidently invite guests to. We look forward to your support. From my management team and myself, enjoy this issue, and we hope you have a wonderful Spring in this very special place we call Val de Vie.
The new Berg River Bridge is a financial investment of more than R100 million in the infrastructure of our Estate.

“When we read, we are able to travel to many places, meet many people and understand the world.” - Nelson Mandela.
WE ARE THE LEGACY On a brilliant Winter sunshine-filled day, you could almost touch the Madiba Magic all around at Langabuya Primary School in Mbekweni. On July 18th, we were able to honour Madiba through our words and deeds. WORDS BY LORRA I NE H A D F I E L D : VA L DE V I E FO U N DAT IO N A DV I S O R AND VAL DE VIE E STATE RE SI D E NT

18 July 2018 was truly a day that the Val de Vie Foundation will never forget. A brand-new library, enabled in part by the Foundation, provides a platform for education and a love for reading to the children of Langabuya Primary in Mbekweni, Paarl. Guests and learners alike remarked on the superbly decorated and organized event .
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Drakenstein Child Health Study (DCHS)*, together with The Val de Vie Foundation, Solomon Schechter Day School USA and Breadline Africa, took up the challenge to be the legacy by providing a library to the Langabuya Primary School. In Madiba’s own words: “Children are our greatest treasure, they are our future!” Langabuya Primary School learners in the Mbekweni township in Paarl, face many challenges both at home and at school. Parents of learners are often only employed seasonally in the wine industry and households remain largely dependent on social grants.
In addition, the community is seriously affected by the HIV epidemic and at least 50 children are maintained in the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Programme. By providing this library we hope, together with the school teachers and parents, to inspire the Langabuya pupils to learn the love of reading. Past USA President Barack Obama said in his 2018 Nelson Mandela lecture that with the internet, a child in the remotest village can now have all the wisdom of the world at his fingertips. We hope that our library is but a start of that incredible journey that will turn these Learners into Leaders.
VAL DE VIE FOUN DAT IO N
The Val de Vie Foundation would like to thank Unlimited Group for their donation of fruit, Dimensions Tents for their Bedouin tent, Visual Creations for their colourful balloons, Servest for their donation of a sustainable rock garden outside the library, Magnetic Sound for the sound system and Fleet Coffee. It was the combined effort of Val de Vie Events and Val de Vie Marketing that created a virtual Val de Vie Foundation team, coming together to honour those less fortunate in our Valley.
On Madiba day, volunteers from Val de Vie Estate and DCHS read live to each of the learners and then all 1500 learners and 40 teachers were treated to fresh fruit and a commemorative bookmark designed in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
We at the Foundation are reminded every day how privileged we are to live in this beautiful Valley we call home. We hope that by sharing our time and funds with the school, we are creating a better life for all, from Mbekweni to Val de Vie Estate.
The official dedication commenced with a prayer from Pastor Hans, a Langabuya past learner, and an address from Drakenstein Executive Mayor Conrad Poole. Professor Heather Zar, Chair UCT Department Paediatrics ably doubled as master of ceremonies and key note speaker on why UCT is focusing on Langabuya and Paarl East with their study. When the principal, Mr Fiki, stood up to address the gathering, the audience broke out into a song of praise. But it was the school choir singing Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika and Happy Birthday Madiba that ensured there was not a dry eye in the house.
* DCHS is conducting a large longitudinal research study to investigate risk and protective factors for child health outcomes from birth through to 5 years of age. The study is carried out in two vulnerable communities in Paarl; Mbekweni and Paarl East.

DOCTOR'S ORDERS Val de Vie Estate resident, dr. WOR D S BY T HE G R A P E V I N E T E A M
Dr. Dries van den Heever, the youngest surgeon in South Africa to perform robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies.
Dr. Dries van den Heever, based in Mediclinic Paarl and practicing as Winelands Urology, has been specialising in prostatectomies (removal of the entire prostate as cancer treatment) since 2014. "The da Vinci ÂŽ Surgical System is truly a game changer for prostatic surgery", comments Dries and adds that "patients not only have better outcomes as far as their cancer is concerned, but the recovery period compared to traditional open surgical techniques is much faster." The robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies are performed out of Mediclinic Durbanville. There are five da Vinci surgical systems in South Africa and 24 accredited surgeons. The system is powered by robotic technology that allows the surgeon's hand movements to be translated into smaller, precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient's body.
Dries lives on Val de Vie Estate with his wife Sarette, 10-month-old Sophia and bulldog Lucy. He spent many holidays as a child on the farm adjacent to Val de Vie Estate and has a great love for the Paarl region. "Not only do we live in the most beautiful part of our country, we also have world class medical facilities and some of the best medical professionals and latest technologies on our doorstep," remarked Dries.

SAVING LIVES AND EMPOWERING LEARNERS The Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, an annual highlight on the Western Cape golfing calendar, is set to take place on 18 October 2018. Sportsmen and women, celebrities and other golf enthusiasts will take part in this event, in aid of the Val de Vie Foundation, at the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course on the Val de Vie Estate. WO R D S BY LO R R A IN E HA D FIE L D Just a few kilometers from Val de Vie Estate lies a beautifully tended cross marking the loss of a young learners’ life from a road accident. This tragic accident may have been averted if the motorist had been able to see the child from a distance. For the 2018 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, the Val de Vie Foundation is proud to partner with Visibility is Life - an organization dedicated to building a future for all our children by providing reflective gear for pedestrians. The Val de Vie Foundation will be distributing bright yellow backpack school bags with a reflective logo for night visibility. These, combined with road safety training, will be delivered to young learners at under resourced schools in the Valley. Carla Koch, Founder of Visibility is Life, is delighted that the Val de Vie Foundation supports her initiative to “highlight the social problem of non-visible pedestrians and to equip our children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe on the roads.” There are many reasons why learners drop out of primary school, but the one we can address is the lack of a simple pair of school shoes. The Val de Vie Foundation will partner with Khula Development Group and the most deserving schools in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley to provide disadvantaged learners with durable Buccaneer school shoes. Paul Issa, Director of Buccaneer School Shoes, is a Val de Vie Estate resident who did not hesitate to contribute to the 2018 Celebrity Golf Day, "the opportunity to make a difference in the community I live in, is a great privilege". 16

This winter has been great fun and full of action. Our clubhouse has become a hub of activity as we introduce food nights and daily specials, Wednesday’s curry night a crowd favourite! Junior Golf on the rise The junior golf program at Pearl Valley has recently received a whole lot more structure. A joint initiative between the golf department and Swingfit has created great excitement after a presentation at the club last month. The new look program will target all ages and level of skill that is on offer at Pearl Valley, in a twelve-week program designed to create a fun yet educational environment. Player profiles will be created for each golfer to track their progress and isolate their strengths and weaknesses. Along with the technical and physical components of golf, the importance of the mental side of the golfing game will be highlighted, often over-looked yet of utmost importance. The cap grading system is a new incentive scheme approach we have taken, and once the golfers reach their set goals or criteria they receive a cap of a certain colour. This grading system is similar to the Karate belt grading system, but it also gives the golfers a sense of pride as the rest of the club and their peers witness their progress. I am proud of Golf Coordinator Jaco Coetzee for this great initiative, together with James Wade and Adrian Buchner of Swingfit Golf Academy. On the course From the 1st of May we have been hard at work repairing the course and getting it back to its championship standard. Our project planner will keep us busy and take us up to the end of September with some bunker work taking us a little further into October. So, what are we doing in terms of projects on the course? Concrete kerbs and cart path repairs: It has always been our goal to minimise the stakes and ropes around the golf course. A few years ago, we started kerbing some tee and green complexes. The long-term plan is to have all Par 3‘s (total length) tee complexes and green complexes kerbed. This will eliminate a lot of stakes which will help with reducing maintenance costs and make the course more aesthetically pleasing. Levelling greens aprons: Over time the greens aprons have raised due to regular top dressing and tining. This affects the greens performance especially relating to surface run-off. We will try and complete as many as we can before the end of September. Levelling tees: This is our third and final year of levelling tees for now. By the end of the project season all the tees on the course would have been be leveled. 20
GRAPEVI NE
Capillary bunkers: We have a total of nine green side bunkers identified for 2018. Right now, the team is about to finish the 1st hole. From there we will start with the 14th green side bunker. By the end of next year all our green side bunkers will be complete. Golf Shop News We say good bye to Carlo Williams from the Golf Shop as he has been offered a wonderful position with another golfing institution. He will be missed but not forgotten and we wish him well in his new venture. This has opened up a position and through our development and training programmes, line staff attendants will be job shadowing for a possible future role in the Golf Shop. They are currently undergoing training with Raquel and will soon be seen behind the counter serving the needs of both members and guests. We are proud of their ambition and willingness to learn. The Golf Shop recently had the pleasure of Kymi Swanepoel, Retail Project Consultant at Retail Savvy training our team. The training was done to assist the team to better understand retail and the psychology around sales. Over two days a great deal of information was shared, and the team really benefited from the time spent with her. Keep in touch with what is in store by staying up to date with the golf newsletter and estate newsletters. There are some great sales initiatives and new products arriving in the coming months! News from our Club Captain, Dean Meyer Something good is certainly happening in the club – a year ago, our winter Wednesday and Saturday fields were rather empty. These days, it’s difficult to get a time slot! The buzzing clubhouse after a round of golf is further testimony to the fact that everything is moving in the right direction. What has been particularly pleasing to me, is that our competition winners continue to change each week and that winning scores are well within the acceptable range. The issue of “handicap fixing” is certainly not one we have in our club. We have a bit of work to do in the Winelands Estate Challenge as Steenberg has made a very strong start. However, with three rounds remaining, I remain confident we will make up the deficit and retain the trophy.

“What do I wear to the polo?” is a question raised by many prior to a polo event at Val de Vie Estate. Dressing for polo should be understated. The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine, was recently featured in international media, relaxing on the grass while watching her husband William play in a polo match. She wore a light blue dress from Zara and a pair of neutral coloured wedges - far removed from her usual attire of headpieces, high heeled shoes and structured dresses. “Polo outfits should be elegant, but not over the top. Fascinators, skin tight dresses, revealing clothing and stilettos are out. Think espadrilles, flowing jumpsuits and long summer dresses for women and relaxed, unstructured shirts and chinos for men,” advises Elrico Bellingan, official fashion partner for the 2018 Cintron Pink Polo, presented by Vodacom. Elrico established his fashion label ElricoZarr, in 2016, and is renowned for using high-end fabrics combined with meticulous design. No stranger to our polo events, ElricoZarr creations have in the past graced the “best dressed” line-up multiple times at both Cintron Pink Polo and Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo events. Bold floral prints, polka dots, soft gelato colours and all shades of pink are in fashion for the upcoming summer season. The colour and décor theme for the 2018 Cintron Pink Polo is emerald green, pink and touches of gold. Elrico’s approach to creating timeless pieces starts with a personalised consultation with his clients in the comfort of their home. Advice on body type, complimenting colours and wardrobe essentials culminate in a versatile, investment designer piece that can be worn to multiple occasions. The dreaded situation ‘she is wearing what I am!’ won’t materialise when wearing the ElricoZarr label, as all fabrics are customised and printed, ensuring unique pieces not available anywhere else. 24

Our aim is to embrace new members and estate residents to be involved in the Val de Vie Polo Club, and to be part of a fun and eventful club, with a great family atmosphere.
Wednesday: club matches
The generalisation that polo is sport for the elite is not accurate. Becoming a member of the Val de Vie polo club does not require that you play the game of polo. Social membership costs R2000 and covers the annual Cape polo season which runs from October until April.
Sunday: club matches
For those who want to try their hand at the sport of kings, there are tuition packages and lessons available on your doorstep. The polo club is the only official active club on the Estate, so join up and enjoy the ride! The Val de Vie Polo Club Goals 2018 The club aims to improve the quality of our polo games by getting better performance out of members through the ranks, from -2 goals members to 4 goal members. Fund raising for the club has been implemented by introducing the Val de Vie polo ball on the eve of the 6-goal tournament that takes place in the summery month of February. With the auctioning of the teams and other valuable artefacts, this event is a wonderful opportunity to suit up in your best black tie or cocktail dress and have a good old fashioned ‘opSkop’. Weekly happenings at the Val de Vie Polo Club Tuesday educational chukkas: Everyone is welcome to try the magical art of polo with the help of our polo expert and professional coach Kevin Rixon.

On 19 July, the L’Huguenot Cellar was transformed into an ultra-chic timepiece boutique, complete with a watchmaker’s station and a photobooth with artificial snow, to commemorate the launch of the iconic Swiss Grande Maison’s latest timepiece. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been delighting and surprising devotees of beautiful objects since 1833. The rich legacy of the brand has been built over centuries, serving as a constant source of inspiration in its ongoing pursuit of excellence. The combination of a historic, luxury brand and the new Ryk Neethling wine was a perfect match and on the evening a selection of handpicked guests enjoyed canapes and drinks while admiring the selection of fine timepieces on display. Guests were ushered either to a watchmaker room (the L’Huguenot Vinoteque) or to a sit-down wine and food pairing in the L’Huguenot Tasting Room.

In the watchmaker room, guests observed the dismantling of a time piece, showcasing the hundreds of minute parts that make up the iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre watches. The wine and food pairing consisted of either a main course or dessert item, paired with the new Ryk Neethling blend.

80 handpicked guests attended this one-of-a-kind event that showcased the integration of artisan winemaking and watchmaking skills.
The Val de Vie Events team coordinated the event on behalf of Jaeger-LeCoultre and Val de Vie Estate, and their attention to detail and flawless execution were again highly praised on the night. The Ryk Neethling Premium Red Blend is a layered wine with well-integrated fruit (cherry/plum/blackberry) and oak flavours (nutmeg and pepper). The elegant tannins in the wine give structure and a lingering aftertaste and is best enjoyed with red meat or chocolate dishes. The wine ages well over a period of 10 years. Grapes were handpicked from various areas to create a unique and complex wine. Shiraz grapes were sourced from Paarl and Elim and Grenache Noir from Botrivier, and hand sorted at the L’Huguenot Cellar.

Each variety was fermented separately between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius. During wine-making there was minimal intervention, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs, for extraction of an intense purple colouration with bright red hues, and flavour. Skin contact of fourteen days was allowed, and fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. The Shiraz component was matured in first, second and third fill French oak barrels, while the Grenache aged in older barrels. Components were kept separate for 12 months, where after blending took place and the wine was returned to the barrels for a further 6 to 8 months. The historic town of Franschhoek was clothed in red, blue and white over the weekend of 14 and 15 July. Local businesses created a welcoming atmosphere to bring out the Parisian and French flair of guests visiting the beautiful town for the annual festival, the name ‘Bastille Day’ derived from the ‘Fête Nationale’ – the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison during the French Revolution.
Altogether 22 wineries from the Franschhoek Valley displayed their finest wine selection on the day. Val de Vie Estate took pride in displaying our estate wines, offering 6 wines in our estate wine portfolio: Polo Club Sauvignon Blanc, Polo Club Merlot, Polo Club Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Val de Vie Cuvee MCC, Valley of Life Premium Red and the Ryk Neethling Signature Red Blend.
The 25th annual Franschhoek Bastille Festival took place at the Franschhoek Huguenot Monument. ESTATE
'In a dog’s life, there are few things more exciting than running off-leash with its four-legged friends.'
Dog parks were first established in California in 1979 as community settings where dogs living in urban environments could run and play, while their owners socialised and observed the interaction of their dogs with others. Situated behind the stables in Val de Vie Phase 2, is our Estate’s dog park where all Val de Vie residents and their dogs are welcome. The Val de Vie development company constructed the dog park to create a pleasurable environment for all dogs living on the estate. The Val de Vie Constitution does not allow dogs off-leash anywhere on the estate, and we urge dog owners to respect this rule for the safety of residents, specifically children, and other animals. Studies on pet behaviour contend that dogs require an outlet for their energy in order to alleviate boredom and reduce destructive behaviour. Play and exercise are important for the physical needs of a dog, and to cement the bond with its owner. Well-exercised dogs are less likely to bark, and all dog owners are encouraged to regularly either take their dogs for walks on-leash around the meandering paths of the Estate, or for a visit to the dog park a couple of times per week.
Dog park etiquette: • Pick up after your pet: Dispose of your dog’s waste • Let your dog be a dog: remove his/her leash – a leashed dog may be territorial and protective • Safety: Ensure that the gate stays closed at all times • Training: A properly trained dog will come when it is called

Stellenbosch is now only 16 minutes from Val de Vie Estate, and a mere 30 minutes before you arrive at the Cape Town International Airport and the Mother City. On 21 June the Berg River Bridge was officially opened by the Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Councillor Conrad Poole. Martin Venter, Founder and CEO of Val de Vie Estate said at the opening event: “Building a bridge is symbolic of human progress. We are proud today to open the Berg River Bridge and believe that this addition to our Estate is not only to the benefit of our residents, but in favour of our entire community.” The opening of the Berg River Bridge is a remarkable event for Val de Vie Estate and is the first private bridge of this scale in South Africa. As a significant contributor to the economic development of Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch areas, Val de Vie foresees that the Berg River Bridge will further positively influence this rapidly growing sector of our country. Councillor Conrad Poole expressed his gratitude towards Val de Vie Estate for investing in the infrastructure of the municipality and said that: “Drakenstein Municipality is one of the fastest growing and financially sound municipalities in South Africa, and our Valley is well on its way to becoming world class.” Val de Vie Events coordinated the opening of the Berg River Bridge.

DOWN TO EARTH A couple of rainy days over the last few months have given us hope, but water in the Western Cape Province continues to be a scarcity. Strategic plant selection that requires limited irrigating, is the water-wise way to go. WO R D S BY T HE G R A P E V IN E T E A M

ESTATE
Hardy and drought-resistant plants, interspersed with semi-hardy varieties, are the best solution for gardens in the Western Cape.
Soil preparation is a critical step in the water-retention process of plants and can be improved by adding organic matter to improve texture. Stones and rocks provide further insulation and can also be used in a decorative manner to bring architectural interest. Pebbles, fine gravel and bark add texture and colour and create unique design compositions. Grouping varieties of plants together create a lush and impactful look that can be partitioned according to irrigating requirements. A Fynbos garden-style made up of plants with small or needle-like leaves is a sensible choice for water wise gardening. Indigenous plants are less thirsty than exotics and are adapted to the Cape climate. The Agathosma species, colloquially referred to as “buchu” are assets in the garden with their bright green coloured leaves and fresh aromatic smell. Succulents such as cotyledon, echeveria, aloe and vygie varieties store water in their fleshy leaves and stems and are drought-resistant. Grey foliage varieties reflect the sun’s rays and keeps the plant cooler – artemisia and lavender are hardy and herbaceous plants that complement one another in hues of silver-grey and purple. Hairs on plants such as lamb’s ear and members of the Helichrysum family slow down air movement which reduces water loss.

Kinder Ark visits Reggio Emilia in Italy...
“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” - Coretta Scott King This quote defines the city of Reggio Emilia in beautiful Italy. Social cohesion, relationships, connections, and education lie at the roots of this Italian city. Annalizé Blake (Principal of Kinder Ark Val de Vie) and I had the privilege to study the Reggio Emilia educational approach at the Loris Malaguzzi International center in Reggio Emilia. The study group was attended by 400 educators, architects, school owners and coordinators. Forty five different countries were represented. It was inspiring to engage with so many educators who are passionate about the future of children. Educators who want to renew, adjust and develop educational systems so that individualism can be celebrated rather than be judged. “Reggio Emilia is an ethical city that has its roots in its Infant Toddler centers and Preschools” - Howard Gardner. The seed of the Reggio Emilia schooling system was planted in 1945. After the Second World War, it was the initiative of the women of Reggio Emilia to build schools for their children. Many buildings were in ruins, and the citizens had to decide what to rebuild.
The men, tired of fighting in the war, wanted a cinema; instead, the women voted for the rebuilding of schools. Fortunately for mankind, the women won the election. Because there was a shortage of teachers, these schools were manned by the mothers themselves. Only later, educated teachers were employed. The Reggio Emilia educational approach is a system that respects and connects with the environment as well as the individuals that cares for it. A child is seen and treated as an immaculate creature with no limitations. Children have infinite potential and abilities and if it is not activated in childhood through experience and imitation, the plasticity of the brain will be lost and reactivation in adulthood is almost impossible. Children learn through a process of choices, and their choices are not judged by a checklist of outcomes. Instead, their choices are analyzed to determine their thought process. In this way, the educator knows what questions to ask to prompt creative thinking. Most work are done by trial and error, and every day is a journey of evolution. The system interprets a school as a living organism, therefor sections or subjects must work in close relation with each other. Projects begin with an idea or hypothesis. Children are not asked to reproduce a product, rather to focus on the process to create a product of their own. A representation of their own individualism. Very often a project does not have a perfect ending, and it often takes a roundabout, but the process is what prompts thinking and learning.
“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” - Marian Wright Edelman
I was astonished to experience such consideration in a community. Where the right of proper education is shared throughout the city. Where parents deeply care about quality education for all children regardless of socio-economic status. Where special needs are referred to as special rights. Thirteen percent of the city’s budget is applied towards education. Class fees are paid according to income and may vary from 60 Euro per month to 540 Euro per month (for the same education). Children supported by welfare do not pay for schooling at all. This shows absolute commitment to all participants of the community. Trust in children and expectation of what they can become, was inspiring to me. We live in a society of perfection, where children are expected to perform according to the tick in the box. As if all children are created the same. We are not interested in the process of development, we are only interested in results. By having this approach, we are missing potential, we are constantly judging, and we are suppressing creative thinking. Also, because we focus on ticking the box, we often skip building blocks that are crucial for developing a skill properly. In addition, by being focused on results, we rather tell children what we want, instead of them solving the problem to reach their goal. To my fellow teachers, I have a few thoughts for you to digest. In many schools we visited, children were encouraged to play with recycled materials together with the elements of nature. Very little toys were seen in the centers. Children interacted with a variety of materials which they used to invent, re-create and construct. We paid a visit to the Remida recycling center. Through close relationships with manufacturers in the city, the recycling center was established as a resource for the schools of Reggio Emilia. Educators of the city can take educational resources free of charge. Recycling materials are materials that lost monetary value because of a manufacturing defect but are used so that children can give a purpose to it. In many of the centers, these worthless materials are re-born to have value again.
In the words of E. Morin, I have found significant truth: “Complex thoughts are important. Instead of a thought that isolates and separates, we should think in a way that distinguishes and unites.” “Teaching is a profession in which you cannot allow yourself to think small. Teachers are interpreters of educational phenomena. What were the children thinking and feeling while doing the activity? Do not be a melancholy executor, be an educational phenomenon!”

SECURITY REPORT By the time you read this, the biometric control and guest management system major upgrade will be completed and all of us on this side quite relieved that his complex task is completed. WORDS BY LOU IS D E JAG E R
The upgrade and amalgamation of the electronics on the Estate, whilst at the same time commissioning the new Berg River Gate house opening, was daunting to say the least and I have to once more thank both residents for their patience and the technical team for their diligence. A first of its kind and quantum in South Africa that at some stage had even the suppliers and manufacturers baffled, is now fully operational. Number plate recognition cameras linked to essential authorities and monitored offsite have been installed and enhance efforts to ensure safety and security. As mentioned before, facial recognition camera technology as well as possible smartphone-based access management is being investigated in order to not only improve security 78 GRAPEVI NE
but also expedite the process with less frustration for our residents. The security tender process managed by an outside consultancy under the eye of our auditors is virtually complete and the outcome will in due course be shared with residents. The behaviour of our Estate youngsters this past holiday has been exemplary, bar one or two incidents, and we thank parents for taking ownership and working with us to prevent problems and delinquency.
