ESTATE MANAGE RS RE P O RT

REVIEWING OUR VALLEY OF LIFE Warm greetings to our Val de Vie community. For this edition of the Grapevine, I wish to share with you a few interesting matters that arose at the 5th Annual ARC (Association of Residential Communities) Conference that took place at Val de Vie at the beginning of August. WORDS BY TERRY KE L L E R

The conference is hosted annually by a different estate and this year for the first time in the fairest Cape. Community managers from around the country representing a wide spectrum of estates spent two days discussing various topical matters. Two of the most pressing issues at the moment are the environment and legislative matters. Here in the Western Cape we are currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in living memory, so water security and availability is high on the agenda at all estates across the country. Linked to this is the power situation and pressure being placed on communities to save power and look at alternative solutions. Waste management and recycling services are also under strain and communities are finding new ways to deal with green waste, recycling and domestic waste to reduce volumes and pressure on landfill sites. In the legislative environment, communities are faced with new legislation that has been introduced such as the CSOS (the new Community Ombudsman). This has a cost implication to every single resident in a community scheme and the concern being raised by the industry is that there is a very real risk that poor decisions could be handed down due to the ombudsman’s inability to competently adjudicate on a matter.

04

GRAPEVI NE

Our management team and Trustees are constantly reviewing these issues to ensure that Val de Vie remains at the forefront of estates in South Africa. It’s not all doom and gloom though. The conference has highlighted that our greatest strength as an industry is the ability of our members to empower their HOA’s with the funds and resources to afford residents security and other services that are not always available to the person living in a suburb. There is also an increased level of unity among residential community management and the networking and sharing of ideas helps finding solutions to problems. It is also very evident that the residential community “product” is sound in relation to creating safe and harmonious lifestyles for residents and the demand for property in the residential community market remains high. Before closing, I must pass on to everyone the wonderful comments and compliments we received from the delegates. The overwhelming comment was that the staff across the estate from security, catering, events, hotel and golf were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Then, of course, our estate and valley just blew everyone away. Sometimes one just needs to see things with a fresh pair of eyes, to realise that we live in a little paradise here in the Valley of Life.

CONFERENCING & EXHIBITIONS AT VAL DE VIE At the start of August, Val de Vie Estate hosted the 5th annual ARC (Association of Residential Communities) Conference and Expo. We were joined by 150 delegates for a two-day conference and exhibition in the Ballroom at Val de Vie followed by a golf day at Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. For the non-golfers, Telkom presented a food and wine experience at the L’Huguenot Venue & Vinoteque. A gala dinner in the newly renovated conference center at Pearl Valley concluded the event. WORDS BY VA L D E VI E E VE NTS

Estate directors and CEO’s from various parts of South Africa, even as far as Namibia, attended the annual gathering. Our Val de Vie Marketing Director and shareholder, Ryk Neethling, opened the proceedings to welcome delegates and sponsors to the Valley of Life. Key note speakers included Lorne Sulcas, who shared lessons learnt from his extensive travels specifically the African bushveld and Chantell Ilbury, co-founder of the scenario strategy partnership, Mindofafox. Representatives from well-known estates such as Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, St. Francis Links and Thesen Islands were in

attendance and joined in discussions on a range of topics such as safety and security, staffing, access control and community management roles. Favourable weather conditions ensured an enjoyable day for 82 golfers on our pristine course. Servest was the sponsor for the golf day that ended with a prize giving dinner in the new conference center. Pearl Valley members Mick Callaghan and Riz Mijid took home the ARC Estate Golf Day trophy as overall winners. The conference delegates, Golfers and ARC organizers expressed words of gratitude to our Food and Beverage staff, both at The Polo Club and The Valley restaurants. Excellent service and a world class culinary offering

were applauded by attendees. Compliments to the green keeping staff at our signature golf course and the Val de Vie Events Team, who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the 2017 ARC Conference and Expo.

CELEBRATING TRUE MADIBA MAGIC July is Mandela Month, where we celebrate Madiba’s birthday on July 18th and seek to take action, inspire change and indeed make every day a Mandela Day. This July 2017 was very special for the Valley. WORD S BY LO R R A I N E HA D FI E L D : VA L D E V I E FO U N DAT IO N A DV I SO R

The Val de Vie Foundation was able to realise Mandela’s vision by bringing homeowners from across Val de Vie and Pearl Valley together to support the less privileged in our Valley. We are so grateful for the enthusiastic support shown by homeowners who know that their greatest gift is to reach out and provide a hand up to our community. MANDEL A MONTH HIGHLIGHTS: -Sixteen ladies from the estate, led by Pearl Valley homeowner Ali Brunt, knitted scarves to keep out the winter cold, which were donated to the Langrug Informal Settlement in Franschhoek as part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day -Paarl resident Elton Daniels, the first South African to be invited to umpire in the Indoor Cricket Federation World Cup, is now packing for travel to Dubai in September to represent South Africa due to our Foundation and our partner, Hope Through Action. The Val de Vie Foundation was approached by Elton who had no financial means to travel to Dubai. When Elton received the life changing news. He said, “I can’t express my gratitude towards all involved, I did not expect that my dream would become a reality, and I am truly grateful”. -The Foundation was proud to support Radio KC “KC Cares”, Mandela Day drive in aid of Butterfly House on July 18. We provided blankets, warm clothing and even a tennis racquet and bicycle which was auctioned off for funds for Butterfly House. This centre provides resources and skills to vulnerable adults and children. Why “Butterfly?” A butterfly cannot be helped out of a cocoon, to live, it has to struggle by itself but needs the environment and resources to develop and grow into a strong butterfly. 19

-With the closure of the crèche at Pearl Valley, we were able to make available perfect sized tables, chairs and cabinets for our littlest valley residents. Our partner Valcare distributed the furniture to deserving crèches in Paarl East. -As you may have read, the estate supports breast cancer every year with our Cintron Pink Polo event held every November. This year, we partially used funds generated to support a Women’s Day event in Klein Nederberg for 15 local breast cancer survivors. Our local survivors received a Chemo Friendly Gift Box and tickets to the Cintron Pink Polo, where they will be honoured with the survivors which were nominated in the KFM competition. -The Foundation also held its first HOA Advisory Council meeting on June 27th and formally constituted the Discipleship, Entrepreneur, Sports and Education sub committees. If you are a homeowner and interested in joining, please contact the writer. JULY MONTH FOUNDATION SHOWCASE: MANDEL A DAY CELEBRATION AT RUSTHOF OLD AGE HOME On Sunday, 16 July 2017, the Val de Vie Foundation, superbly assisted by the ever-generous Val de Vie Events, honoured Nelson Mandela’s teachings by gathering his rainbow nation to celebrate with the senior citizens of Rusthof Old Age Home in Paarl East. 20

Val de Vie residents contributed to a Blanket Drive, assisted by our local Linen Drawer store, and which culminated in the delivery of 105 blankets for the frail elderly of the home. It was with great pleasure that we brought the gifts from our home to theirs and spent an afternoon of warm companionship. The Foundation was joined by Zelda la Grange, who served Nelson Mandela for 19 years as his private secretary.

“We at the Val de Vie Foundation know that every person we are able to touch can be a life transformed.”

In her welcoming speech she said, “We are here in the spirit of Mandela Day and even though you may sometimes feel forgotten by society, know that we are always thinking of you.” The Rusthof residents were also thrilled to meet the National and local rugby heroes who accompanied Zelda. Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Scarra Ntubeni and even Frans Malherbe who had played a colossal match in Pretoria the previous night and still made time to travel to the Cape Winelands. Together with Siv Ngesi, one of South Africa’s dynamic actors and comedians, and our very own Ryk Neethling, they shared many laughs, personally served the residents with sweet and savoury treats, signed autographs, handed out blankets and created memorable moments. Having transformed the room with flowers (arranged by a Val De Vie resident) and bright balloons, the ambiance was energized when popular singer Karen Zoid shared her extraordinary singing talent by reaching out to the elderly as she strummed her guitar, walking through the delighted residents.

22

GRAPEVI NE

We were also honoured to have Mayor Conrad Poole grace the proceedings and join the residents in song to Elvis Presley’s Love Me Tender, followed by Amazing Grace. Not to be outdone by the all the celebrities, we were so delighted to have the delicious baked goods be made by Chloe, a 14-year-old Val de Vie resident. And then Karen Zoid’s 10-year-old son, Ben, entertained us all by singing a song with his famous mother. “We at the Val de Vie Foundation know that every person we are able to touch can be a life transformed. To borrow from Madiba himself: A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future. Let us strive to enhance their capacity to support themselves for as long as possible and, when they cannot do so anymore, to care for them.” – Ryk Neethling.

FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF It’s almost Spring in the Valley of Life, and looking back on the winter season, it is clear that we made the right decision to not accept ‘slow trade’ as an indication of colder, rainy days. Our team has brought out-of-the-box ideas to the table and has been very creative in their approach in attracting golfers to our incredible facility. WORD S BY DA M I A N WRI G LE Y

Our decision to open the course on Mondays has proven to be a great idea and has provided a platform for us to do something special for senior players. Senior Mondays - sponsored by Cape Winelands Properties - has been very well received by golfers from as far as Hermanus. The other event that proved to be a great deal of fun was our Truly British week. This was centred around the 146th Open Championship played at Royal Birkdale. We loved seeing the golfers participate and get into the spirit of the week. We even went as far as placing a British styled phone booth on the course and had traditional British-inspired meals on offer throughout the tournament. In my view, these last three months have presented some of the best golfing conditions. The course was kept in superb condition right through winter. Our efforts have proved very successful in that we are seeing a healthy number of golfers frequenting our course which resulted in over 2000 rounds played in July. The next event that I am really looking forward to is our Celebrity Golf Day on the 19th of October, be sure to book your 4-ball before they sell out – we have incredible celebrities who have already confirmed their spot! The Valley Restaurant has been buzzing with the introduction of new menus and plenty of fun food and wine and whiskey pairings on offer. The Pearl Valley hotel was fully occupied during both the CIPLA and Association of Residential Communities (ARC) conferences and guests were pleased with the service and amenities on offer. 32

CLUB AGM Our recent Club AGM was well supported considering the time of the year it was hosted. At the AGM, the Lady Captain’s report was read out by Mrs. Lizanne Heydenrich on behalf of Mrs. Shoona Burman, an exceptional lady who gave 100% through her term of captaincy. At the Club AGM members voiced that the club facilities were in a good condition and that they were proud to be associated with our club. Listening to their positive comments filled me with pride and fuelled me to continue making improvements and upholding our high standards. A big thank you must go out to my esteemed colleague, Aletia Oosthuizen, for all her efforts building up to the meeting and of course on the night. She guided me through my first AGM as did Ivor Morgan and Chris McCann.

G OLF COURSE: The redesign on the greenside bunkers at the 15th hole has been successfully completed. These bunkers are newly shaped and have all been capillary lined with less severe slopes and shallowed-out entry points. Around the fringes more space has been created for walking around the green. These bunkers are in line with the way we see the shaping of our bunkers moving forward. Mike and I are currently working with Sean Quinn, whom is part of the Nicklaus Design team, in creating a long-term plan for the course. Our key areas of focus will be on the following: - Water conservation - Environmental impact - Long term sustainability - Cost effective without compromising on standard - Reduce the cutting footprint - Reduce the overall per hectare size of the bunkers CLUBHOUSE: A great deal of time and energy has gone into breathing life back into the clubhouse. New flooring in the main dining room area and lounge and a fresh coat of paint with many striking accent pieces have brought tranquillity and balance to the space. Our recent addition of the Signature Lounge has also added a wonderful venue to enjoy a meal, read a newspaper or just to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our latest completed renovation is that of our Conference Venue and is a game changer in expanding our offering.

It also gives our clubhouse a permanently set restaurant which does not have to close for golf day functions. Further upgrades are scheduled to take place for the golf shop, halfway house, downstairs golf offices and a newly designed state of the art spa. I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding whilst renovations are taking place. IN CLOSING After six months of being here I am even more confident about the future of Pearl Valley. The golf course is consistently in great condition and we have arguably had one of the best winters in terms of conditioning. Our members are world class and very supportive of the club, our events are well attended and the member golf rounds looking healthy and balanced.

ELS FOR AUTISM GOLF DAY On a picture-perfect day, it was an absolute pleasure and honor for Pearl Valley Golf Course to once again host the Els for Autism Golf Day on the 19th of May 2017. With 128 golfers and a few familiar faces, the day proved to be a great success for a very worthy cause. WORD S BY G OL F E VE NT S

Els for Autism envisions itself as being a game-changing resource in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), delivering and facilitating programs that are leading examples of what should be available to people with ASD across the world. Through their commitment to learning and the sharing of best practice, Els for Autism is a driving force in helping people with ASD, around the world, realize their individual potential and become valued, productive members of their communities. The morning kicked off on the driving range with eighteen kids from the Vera School for learners with Autism in Rondebosch, who were treated to a #GameOn clinic. #GameOn is a new, innovative program, developed by Els for Autism in collaboration with PGA Reach and The First Tee, that gives children and young adults with ASD, between the ages of 6 and 23, access to the game of golf. The program is aimed at developing life skills, encouraging social interaction and promoting healthy living through the sport of golf. #GameOn Autism Golf is designed to build self-esteem and confidence in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment; encouraging participants to learn golf skills while practicing specific autism learning concepts. With the help of James Wade and Adrian Buchner from SwingFit performance academy and Chanel Baumgarten from Els for Autism, it was a memorable morning for these amazing children.

“Years from now people may remember me as a golfer and a major champion. But I’d like also to be remembered as somebody who took the issue of Autism and did something with it.” - Ernie Els 36

WESTERN PROVINCE EQUITATION SEMINAR As part of Continuous Professional Development for Equitation Judges, equestrian seminars are held each year in every province across South Africa. EQUESTRIAN

Rosemary Bartlett, Val de Vie General Equestrian Manager, presented this year’s seminar at our pristine on-site facility. The seminar began at the arena at 10h00, with a demonstration by novice riders and ponies. Thereafter, the judges and coaches presented their feedback with insights of scoring the various movements at different levels. In the early afternoon, some advanced riders demonstrated a more educated level of riding, flatwork movements and jumping, much to the delight of a few curious spectators. “The event allows judges, coaches and riders to maintain and improve the standards of judging, coaching and horsemanship, from novice to advanced level,” Rosemary explained.

WINES

TOPPING UP YOUR WINE KNOWLEDGE With a myriad of wine tasting courses and classes in the Winelands area, the style and presentation of the new interactive wine classes at L’Huguenot Venue & Vinoteque, is a unique approach to understanding wine varietals. Shiraz and Shiraz-blends were the wine of choice for the first interactive class in July. WO R D S BY L’ HU G U E N OT

A warm greeting by Barbara Hugo, Experience Manager at L’Huguenot Venue & Vinoteque and a welcoming glass of Val de Vie MCC sets the tone for a fun and interactive educational experience. The seating around an elegantly set wooden table next to a roaring fire, leaves the cold Cape winter outside, and allows 40 guests to form new friendships and enjoy fine food and wine. Elizma Myburg, international wine expert from R99 Wine Consulting provides a unique wine tasting experience. Her knowledge of wine is unsurpassed and her passion infectious. Her presentation includes an informative overview of the origins of the various varietals, the history, popularity and the type of foods it corresponds with. At the July Interactive Wine Tasting, six Shiraz and Shiraz-blend varietals from the L’Huguenot, La Motte, Leopard’s Leap and Val de Vie labels were introduced over a four-course dinner, while Elizma guided guests to pinpoint which varietal they were tasting – relying on their sense of taste and scent, as the wine labels were concealed. A guessing game ensued, exposing the knowledge - or lack thereof - of some of our “wine experts”. The proceedings were informal and light-hearted and the winner with the most correct answer awarded with a prize from L’Huguenot. 49

Carefully selected courses of hearty meat dishes complemented the full-bodied wines (vegetarian options were available on prior request) with a starter of Springbok carpaccio. Comforting, spicy lamb ribs, green-bean stew with lamb and a pepper-crusted ostrich steak was served small-plate style and left no room for second servings. Monthly interactive wine tastings are scheduled for the remainder of the year, each with a different style of wine and food offering.

BASTILLE DAY 2017 The DSTV Franschhoek Bastille Day Festival is a highlight on The Western Cape’s culinary calendar. The Food and Wine Marquee at the Huguenot Monument provided cover against the cold and rainy conditions on Saturday, which did not deter food and wine lovers descending on the festivities. Visitors were treated to tastings of vintages from some of the best wine farms and savouring treats from the valley’s finest restaurants. Wine makers, sommeliers and chefs from the Franschhoek Valley presented outstanding edible and drinkable creations. Live bands added to the celebratory atmosphere of this historic event dating back to 17th Century. Sunny skies welcomed visitors on Sunday and a pleasant afternoon ensued with family and friends.

It was good to see a few familiar faces, and we look forward to returning next year!

The celebration of Bastille Day is to symbolise peace one year after the storming of the Bastille, on the 14th July 1789. The French National Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with this day as well as the Fête de la Fédération, which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790 during the French Revolution.

‘W’ IS FOR WHISKY “A shared bottle of wine – usually red – is a standard feature of our household. Over the past few years, however, our nightly drinks have taken on a new direction” Dish Food and Social, co-owner Oscar Foulkes, shares a newly discovered passion for whisky pairing. WORDS BY DISH F OOD & SOCI A L

56

GRAPEVI NE

It all started a couple of years ago at a small gathering that followed a funeral. Single malt whisky was the drink of choice, leading me to wonder whether coffins float into the hereafter on a river of whisky. I ended up with a few bottles at home, and had a few evenings of replacing wine with whisky. I found that I quite enjoyed the quiet sipping of the golden spirit. Flavour, taste – call it what you want – has been a daily part of my professional life for over 25 years, and premium whisky has more than enough complexity to excite even the most jaded of palates.

“Premium whisky has more than enough complexity to excite even the most jaded of palates.” Open bottles don’t spoil the way that wine does, so one can have a few different flavour experiences (one tot at a time) over the course of an evening. I’ve learnt a few more things. Firstly, after a sip of single malt (assuming it’s drunk close to neat), the flavour hangs around the mouth for much longer than the aftertaste of wine. As a result, I find, a drink lasts much longer, which means that an evening can go by with less alcohol being consumed. It’s far too easy, when a delicious bottle of wine is being drunk, to broach the second bottle, which isn’t great for productivity the following day! Four years ago, we took over the Black Bar in the Polo Club restaurant with an impressive selection of whiskies. Some of the originals are still in stock, still selling at their 2013 prices. A prime example is the Bunnahabhain 25-year-old at less than half what it would be if we updated the price. It’s worth taking your taste buds on a tour of the upper shelves behind the bar the next time you’re at Polo Club. In the first months after taking over The Valley Restaurant at Pearl Valley, we added dozens of whiskies to the selection, where we also host whisky dinners that pair whisky with food. Our chefs have come up with some sensational combinations, perhaps the most surprising of which was a dessert of dark chocolate and blue cheese with Lagavulin. For the ISPS Handa dinner in April at Val de Vie, we paired two different Glenmorangies with dessert for 300 guests. 600 glasses to go out at once with the dessert was epic pouring! Of course, whisky isn’t just a Scottish or Irish thing. John Fourie, a resident on the estate, is an enthusiastic ambassador for Jack Daniels. Their single barrel releases are particularly interesting, because each barrel is slightly different – and encourages whiskey drinkers (yes, with an ‘e’ when it’s made outside Scotland) to buy bottles from multiple barrels to taste

and compare. John has presented several Jack Daniels tastings for us. We look forward to setting up another one soon. I remain, predominantly, a wine drinker, but I am enjoying making my way through the world of good whisky. I hope the selections of whisk(e)y we stock in our bars on the estate, as well as the events we offer in our restaurants, can do the same for you.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made in the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”. – Mr Nelson Mandela. Live a life of service. WORD S BY KIN D E R A R K

At Kinder Ark in the Valley of Life, we teach children about the importance of serving others. While we nurture little souls with excellent care and education, they learn that serving one another is a privilege and not a burden. Salt and Light provides an amazing service to our learners. Jaco Viljoen, Talita Spies, Lounel Strydom and Sue Bosch - we praise your work. Thank you for the weekly seeds that you plant in our children’s lives. We are grateful for your presence as we see the fruit of the Word in their lives. Because of you, children learn from a very young age that God adores them. Every year we host a “Bring your dad to school day” to thank our dads for their hard work and precious time that they spend with their children. To match our Hawaiian theme, and as a symbol of gratitude and affection, children and dads made leis as a gift for each other. To thank our housekeepers and au pairs for their input in the lives of our children, we hosted a spa day at school. Children spoiled their caregivers with manicures, massages and hand scrubs. “It is easy to respect a superior, but it takes gratitude and humility to respect those who serve you. Sincere gratitude and humbleness only comes from knowing God.” In the end, it would be the ultimate gift to see the Valley of Life give life to the entire Valley of Paarl where socio-economic issues often drown ambition to serve and simply to live.
