One of the purposes of developing a garden is to eventually end up with a thriving ecosystem that is largely self-sustaining, literally a ‘field of dreams’ where the owner can spend quality time in a natural area. Most gardeners concentrate on plants, but, gardens rely on soil. Healthy soil will lead to healthy plants, so how does one improve the quality of soil? The answer is quite simple, compost. Inorganic chemical fertilisers, while they have their place, damage to the myriads of micro-organisms that are essential to plants, they are the bacteria and fungi that break down soil particles and humus (plant material) to release the elements the plant needs to grow. By adding compost, these organisms are initially brought into the ecosystem and multiply. Additional dressing not only increases the soil fertility, but balances the moisture in the soil, reducing the need and cost for irrigation. Healthy plants have built-in resistance to diseases and pests, again a reduction in cost and management. A strong ecosystem needs biodiversity. While monocultures of one species of plant are acceptable in formal situations, the management needed to keep them this way is extensive. Mixed gardens, where different plants flower or bear fruit at different times, and complement each other, calls for less intensive management. Mixing various colours in the garden pallet will increase the biodiversity. Once the animal life increases, so too will the numbers of predators, keeping the prey base number in check. Ladybirds, praying mantis, chameleons, lizards, frogs and birds all prey on insect pests, and they are an important addition to the complex food webs that develop. The fact that they prey 24 hours a day, seven days a week without pay is an added bonus, never mind the cost of expensive sprays that kill indiscriminately. Building a garden is easy, development of a sustainable field of dreams takes time, but when it is achieved, the hours spent in it pays back the time and effort a millionfold.
A New Family at The Yard Right outside the main entrance to The Yard, the potted Eugenia ‘lollipop’ trees appear structured and a tad uninteresting. But if you look closer, you will find a little secret developing in one of them. A pair of common fiscals have built a nest and laid their eggs. They possibly they chose the site as it is secure, and the foot traffic of visitors in and out of The Yard will keep birds of prey and cats away during the day. The Yard building and surrounding gardens will provide enough food for the young chicks, because of the limited competition. This goes to prove that any opportunity will be utilised by wildlife and 'if you build it, they will come!'

Synchronised Harmony
Horses have a natural ability to pick up on mood changes, often before we can recognise them in ourselves. As a result, regular riding can help with emotional regulation and teach people to be more in tune with their bodies and minds, a valuable skill to apply to everyday life. Horse riding requires control, sensitivity and physical communication to have two separate bodies working together. The most talented horsemen and women are the ones who make riding look effortless, and nowhere is this more apparent than in dressage, where a horse makes precision movements in response to barely perceptible signals from its rider.

Riding horses can be exciting and exhilarating – but there’s something even more profound about the relationship between horse and rider.
People have sought horses since they first laid eyes on each other. The domestication of wild horses goes back many thousands of years, perhaps even as early as 10 200 BC, and as they were tamed and ridden, they started to remain closed out to their own free will.
Winston Churchill said, “there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man”. When horses and humans are in each other’s presence, their nervous systems start to synchronise. It is what linguists call an ‘embodied language system’ – a way of communicating that relies on touch, physical signals and an emotional connection.

She can also be called upon to be an expert witness in medico-legal cases, such as curatorship applications for people who cannot handle their own financial matters.
Whether you’re grooming and tacking up, heading out on a trail ride, show jumping or playing polo – absolute harmony between horse and rider is the ultimate connection.

If you want a garden teeming with flowers in the summer, now is the time to start planting. Start with a plan, prepare the soil, get seeds or bulbs, and kick off the process, ultimately leading to a magnificent garden! Investing is surprisingly similar. Achieving your investment goals takes patience and time. There is a saying, ‘if you want to sit in the shade in your old age, you have to plant the tree today.’ However, there are several factors to consider when devising a personal financial plan: your circumstances, risk tolerance, investment goals, and time horizon, not to mention understanding economic factors, making sense of market fluctuations, and determining which asset classes would suit you best. You can even enjoy the best of both worlds… let your capital flourish offshore, whilst you enjoy life in sunny South GardeningAfrica.

with local and global markets experiencing massive volatility, thanks to rising inflation and interest rates across the world and the war in Eastern Europe. The uncertainty and lower portfolio values have made investors understandably nervous. However, history shows that markets always bounce back. Trying to time the market never works. Staying invested and waiting for the downturn uncertainties to pass is the best path to follow. To create a beautiful garden requires an array of decisions. With investing, decisions relate to the asset classes likely to deliver the best results for your particular goals and risk profile. Not all investors are willing to navigate the, at times, extreme fluctuations in investment values that higher-risk investments produce, and prefer to opt for investments that deliver lower, yet steady, growth with less risk. Name That Tune Families and friends came together for June and July's Music Trivia at L'Huguenot, hosted by musical duo Akimbo. Teams battled it out for four rounds, featuring live performances that tested their knowledge across rock, pop, heavy metal, rhythm and blues. After a final tense round and close scores, the eventual winners were rewarded with applause and bottles of fizz.
The players in their late teens comprised Zoë Coetzee on lead violin, Dané Hayes on violin, Dawid Botes on viola and Estelle Kemp on cello.
After a rousing ovation, the quartet treated the audience to an encore of the tango from the movie 'Scent of a Woman'. Thank you to the joyful Stellenbosch Quartet - and best wishes for your continued studies.
The next Music Trivia event will take place on Wednesday 24 August, at 18:00 for 18:30. R250 includes a glass of wine, dinner and an evening filled with music and laughter.

The piece is in four movements, un poco andante, romanze, intermezzo and finale. It is a highly challenging piece of music to play, with strident rhythm and passages of soft lyricism combined with energetic crescendos. Live performances are so much more enjoyable than listening to a recording. The interplay and coordination between each instrument, the subtle changes of tempo and volume, and the players' energy and pure joy bring the event to life in an incomparable way.
The audience was treated to a masterful rendition of Edvard Grieg's String Quartet No 1, in G Minor, opus 27. Grieg composed the quartet during 1877–78 while living on a farm in Hardanger in Norway. He wrote to a friend: "I have recently finished a string quartet which I still haven't heard. It is in G Minor and is not intended to bring trivialities to market. On the contrary, it strives towards breadth, soaring flight and resonance for the instruments for which it is written."

Even the best golfers in the world spend many hours perfecting their game through practice. However, what makes golf unique is that the number of hours you put in doesn’t necessarily correlate with how much improvement you make. The way you practice golf is what makes you better. It requires you to understand your weaknesses and how to improve on them—the perfect exercise in self-discipline.
The challenge Learning how to play golf takes time. A game of precision, it can be endlessly frustrating, but despite these challenges, it can also be extremely rewarding. Playing golf teaches you that you can accomplish anything, even if it’s challenging. The demand and interest in golf are rising, and no segment has seen as much growth in the last two years as that of female golfers. According to the National Golf Foundation, the percentage of women taking on the golf course rose to 25 percent in 2021, up from 19 percent a decade ago. An even more significant increase is among junior golfers, where more than 35 percent, or 1.1 million are girls, compared to 15 percent in 2000. If you’ve ever considered taking up golf, here is some motivation from Jaco Coetzee, Golf Manager at Pearl Valley, who plays an integral role in programme development at the Pearl Valley Golf Academy, developing and nurturing future golf stars.
