Bridge over Troubled Water In this space a year ago, we rejoiced that the worst of the Western Cape water crisis was over. Covid-19 was a speck on the global radar, and we had no idea of the profound effects that the pandemic was about to have on our lives. As autumn approaches, we cautiously venture into the unknown waters of 2021. WOR DS BY TER RY K ELLER , ESTATE MANAGE R

G

lobal lockdowns and restrictions have become

part of our lives. We have made drastic personal

behaviour changes and are now more or less accustomed to wearing masks, regularly sanitising, socially distancing and postponing plans. The coronavirus is here for the

long haul, and the world is slowly accepting that the future depends on many unknowns. Turning our minds towards acceptance is helpful when life plays out differently than our expectations. Living on our safe and beautiful estate

provides many opportunities to limit the adverse effects of isolation, restrictions and health concerns:

Fresh air and open spaces: We have seen an

increase in the number of residents who use the

trails on the estate. If you have not yet experienced an

early morning or sunset walk, put on your running shoes and go explore. Dust off that bicycle in your garage

and head off to grab a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

Or, see the estate from a different angle and sign up for an equestrian outride. Whether you choose the paved

sidewalks or the nature trails, you will not be disappointed. Fishing is one of life’s simple pleasures and an activity that promotes family time. There are several lakes on the estate where fishing

is allowed, indicated by fish icons on the Estate Map

(follow the QR code), or head to the banks of the Berg River for a flyfishing adventure.

Our environmental officer, Simon Allen, has

produced a number of informative YouTube

video clips of exciting and sustainable projects

to educate our residents (follow the QR code).

Exercise: We have kept the gyms and the outside facilities at The Yard Wellness Centre open under

strict Covid-19 protocols and will continue to do so as we navigate through various levels of lockdown in the upcoming months.

The implementation of the estate’s wellness strategy, combined with a renewed focus on our health, has

increased our residents’ outdoor exercise regimes.

Spending much more time at home and in our families’ company has sparked innovative socially distanced interactions between neighbours at street

braais and catch-up sessions in the parks and at Fleet. With limited school sport taking place, it is encouraging to see scholars practising their chosen sports at The

Yard. These facilities provide a much-needed sporting

activity and social interaction platform for youngsters who currently rely on remote learning and online socialising.

Even our four-legged residents have the facilities to get

some fresh air, play chase and work on their social skills. The dog park now has an area for small dogs to interact safely from the bigger canines’ rough and tumble.

There has never been a better time to take up a new sport, get involved in an outdoor activity, learn a new skill and invest in your wellbeing. On our estate, the options are endless. All you need to do is step outside.

Be kind to yourself and others: Kindness and understanding go a long way during

unprecedented times. Let us choose to interact with

everyone we encounter during this challenging time as if

they are struggling with the same difficulties as ourselves. Let us help, support and encourage one another.

The deliberate choice of turning a negative situation

into a positive one allows us to control our thoughts and emotions. This will be a skill set needed to navigate the next couple of months.

Until our winter edition, please stay safe and healthy, and

embrace all the incredible opportunities available to those fortunate enough to call Val de Vie Estate their home.

ong before ‘wellness real estate’ became a buzzword, Val de Vie Estate built parks, edible greenways and

polo fields to create a sense that modern living and a countryside lifestyle could be perfectly combined.

By the time the coronavirus hit the globe, our residents

were already immersed in a rhythm that included wellness as part of daily living. The disruption of routines and

patterns, brought on by lockdowns and regulations, forced the world to reconsider how they would rather spend their time and invest their lives. A clear indication of this re-

evaluation mindset is the semigration statistics from 2020, where we saw a 60 percent increase in property inquiries from Cape Town suburbs. This shows a real need to be

outside, alone or with family, and to feel safe. We predict that this trend will continue well into 2022.

First-time home buyers benefit from a favourable repo-rate currently at a 50-year low, and we see significant interest in homes priced just below the R6 million mark. The

pendulum has shifted back to a healthy balance between buyers and sellers, resulting in a year-on-year increase in sales during the last quarter. Meeting these buyers’ changing needs, Val de Vie Construction launched a

plot-and-plan solution starting from R5,9 million (including transfer fees and VAT).

Kitchen and bathroom aesthetics used to be at the top of the list of prospective buyers, but market changes have

resulted in a new list of necessities. Home offices, ‘Zoom’ rooms, stable internet connectivity and boardrooms-forrent, have become deciding factors because of remote

working practices. While all Val de Vie Construction homes are designed with work-from-home facilities and access

to fast and reliable fibre, commercial office space remains in high demand. The Polo Village Offices and newly

constructed The Yard Offices are conveniently located near coffee spots, restaurants and the wine cellar and create an idyllic place to conduct business from. Families who have made the estate their primary

residence, have access to more than 15 schools located

in the Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch areas. Home

to some of the top schools in the country, the Paarl region remains in very high demand, specifically for parents

with young children. The Green School, situated a couple of metres outside the Bergriver gate, will be welcomed

by parents looking to cut out commute into town and an alternative schooling system.

A Driving Force for Good Young people’s perceptions about golf is that it is difficult, boring, slow, aimed at older people and has a format that seems less adaptable than other sports. Cultivating a passion for the game to help children become active social golfers or compete at the highest level, is what the Pearl Valley Golf Academy is all about. WORDS BY JACO COETZEE, P EAR L VALLEY GOLF MANAGER

F

ounded in January 2020 when PGA professionals

James Wade and Adrian Buchner joined the Pearl

Valley golf team, the main objective of the Pearl Valley

Golf Academy was to create a future for young golfers.

With a broad appeal on several levels, the academy offers coaching that covers professional golf aspirations, joining the amateur circuit, enjoying the sport recreationally or to venture into club management. Our junior golfers are as

young as four years and are categorised according to pre-

school, primary school, high school and school-leavers. Growing junior participation in the modern age is not as

easy as it seems, with children consumed by technology. The Junior Golf division of the academy is focused on

the development of youngsters’ golf capabilities, and the physical and mental wellness of future stars.

There can be no greater accolade for a junior golf

academy than to see its young stars reach new heights.

GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2021

GOLF

Three of our junior golfers participated in several events

throughout 2020 and produced remarkable results. Ajay Klaver finished first in the Pearl Valley Junior Open,

Romeo le Roux won the Langebaan Junior Open and

Pieter Rossouw won the Hex Valley Junior Open. These

multi-victories are testament to the practices we have put in place through the Pearl Valley Golf Academy.

The great improvement that we have witnessed in our youngsters can mostly be attributed to tournament

participation. Tournament golf allows young ones to find their golfing ability and how to deal with other

pressures when participating at an elite level. Big match

temperament is difficult to simulate during training, so we

encourage as much as possible tournament participation.

It does wonders for their game, confidence and handicap. Golf is a great way for children to get off the couch and spend time outdoors in a safe environment. The sport is healthy for the mind, body and soul and is not ‘just’ a fitness activity. Being outdoors and socialising with

friends is destressing and the technicalities of golf are confidence-boosting. With

certain school sports suspended due to Covid-19, golf is

an excellent pastime for children with time on their hands and energy to burn.

Golf isn’t just a game, it’s a lifestyle that should appeal to all generations.

verflowing dams in the Western Cape have

obliterated the possibility of day zero from our

minds. However, the risk of future water shortages

remains, and requires the continuous monitoring of our water-usage habits.

Water supply is limited across our country, and a large

contributing factor of its scarcity is pollution and this is, unsurprisingly, usually as a result of human activities.

Litter is a particular problem in and around water bodies

on the estate. Debris incorrectly disposed of is swept up

by the wind and lands in the river and lakes. In addition to potentially killing or disabling aquatic life, decaying litter depletes oxygen levels in water.

Leaky taps and faulty irrigation systems could account to

litres of water going straight down the drain. Overwatering of plants not only wastes water, but also pushes soil salts to the surface where it pollutes the ground and damages

plants. Opt for watering twice a week and plant indigenous flora that are maintenance free and robust.

Rainwater is a good source of water for using in your garden and installing a tank to harvest it is relatively simple and inexpensive.

Cutting down on meat and dairy could reduce water use

since animal production utilises more water than crops do. Quality and seasonal eating is available right on our doorstep at the Val de Vie Wellness Farm.

Limit household water usage through tap management

and save up your dirty clothes for full machine loads. Dualflush systems on toilets can save many litres of water and so can cutting down on your shower time.

We turn on the faucet and the essence of life, water, is

always there. At least for now. Thomas Fuller so aptly put it: ‘We never know the worth of water until the well runs dry.’

Conservation of our most precious commodity has become an essential practice 30

rowing up on a farm in the Northern Cape, I recall how my dad’s face would light up when even the smallest

amount of raindrops fell on parched soil. Relying on water

from the sky creates a deeper understanding that water is essential for all life on Earth.

Water is vital for humans. The saying “I am dying of thirst” can be taken quite literal when depriving a human being

of water for longer than three days. As little as a 2 percent decline in total body water can trigger dehydration signs including brain fog, difficulty concentrating, mild blurred vision and daytime fatigue.

I hate to break it to you, but most of us don’t drink enough water. Although our daily quota doesn’t come from

drinking liquids alone, we need at least eight glasses of

water per day. This equates to 2.9 litres for an adult female and 3.3 litres for an adult male.

32

GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2021

Water transports life-giving nutrients and oxygen to cells, keeping them alive and healthy. Water contains several electrolytes that include calcium, chloride, fluoride,

Sweat keeps your body cool, but if you don’t replenish the water you lose, your body temperature will rise. Drinking cool liquids, such as water or iced tea, can help reduce body temperature by cooling the body internally.

I’ve admired polo for years, feeling the ground shake

And then there was lockdown. Re-evaluating the things I

wanted to do, but didn’t. Thinking I had time, but realising how short life actually is. I was still sure that playing polo

would forever be an unticked bucket list item, but I slowly started riding a horse and mustered up some courage to

let it trot a bit faster, canter and eventually gallop, and not fall off. Over a couple of weeks, I got more confident and decided to take a shot at polo.

My first few lessons mostly involved focusing on staying on the horse while getting used to holding and manoeuvring a mallet. I’ll never forget the sensation of a horse running at

full speed while I positioned myself to accurately strike the ball. For a few moments, I forgot that I was on a horse, I

hit the ball and it went forward in the right direction. In that moment, I was into polo. Here is what it taught me:

retirement communities. Add to that a sense of

safety and the assurance of continuous medical care,

and it becomes apparent why Val de Vie Evergreen was

awarded the Best Leisure Development in the Word at the 2021 International Property Awards.

Val de Vie Evergreen residents not only become members of a retired community but also integrate within the larger estate’s established community, while making use of exceptional sporting and wellness facilities. With the

village at the heart of our estate, it is possible for three generations to share valuable time together, enjoy the

beautiful surroundings, and live with true peace of mind

in South Africa’s safest estate. Most of our residents are

still active and enjoy the outdoors, golf, hiking, gardening and engaging with other retired residents over shared interests.

Low maintenance living without the burdens of traditional homeownership is provided with Life Right ownership, which in essence is an investment in a worry-free retirement lifestyle. 56

GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2021

Everyone has different needs later in life, be it assisted living, memory care or maintaining independent living. Amongst the challenges that many seniors and their families face, is the need for specific care.

Evergreen Health provides a comprehensive range of

medical services which include, but are not limited to, discreet and personalised home-based healthcare,

24-hour medical emergency assistance in all homes, and an active aging philosophy that is supported by an extensive village-based health and fitness programme.

In December 2020 Energy Master Builders were appointed to

construct the new Healthcare Centre at Val de Vie Evergreen. This state-of-the-art facility, which will be positioned adjacent to the existing Lifestyle Centre, is scheduled for completion in the next 12 months. We take our commitments to our

Future-Proof your Wealth Towns like Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, and other regions along the Cape coast have experienced a significant influx of families seeking a new lifestyle. here’s great interest in investing offshore, where the best returns have been realised for almost a

decade now,’ remarks award-winning investment expert and Investment Strategist of Brenthurst Wealth, Magnus

Heystek. ‘The local market has experienced very low to no growth, and investors are moving to international markets to build and protect wealth.’

Another noticeable trend of the local market is the number of people who migrated from the northern parts of the

country to coastal areas, especially the Western Cape. In addition to this, a further migration that is gaining

momentum is Cape Town residents relocating to areas out of the city.

building global wealth. We established the latest office on

the estate to serve them efficiently in the personalised style such investors prefer, without having to travel anywhere,’ says Magnus.

Beyond adding more offices, Brenthurst has also

expanded its service offering to clients with international assets. Estate planning for offshore assets requires

knowledge and experience in legal requirements and tax

regimes in different territories. There are two legal experts in-house who guide clients about offshore wills and the

winding up of international estates and the setting up of trusts via Brenthurst’s Mauritius office.

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in significant changes

in business operations and technology made it possible to conduct business without physically being present at

an office. During 2020, Val de Vie Estate experienced an increase in property purchase inquiries from Cape Town

suburbs, mostly from families looking for a ‘deconstructed’ way of living.

Financial Advisor André Basson, runner up in the 2020

South Africa’s history with France dates back to the 1600s when the Huguenot’s indelible contribution and collaboration with Dutch citizens brought finesse and flair to this valley. It’s no surprise then that a Niçois would join forces with a ‘stoere boertjie’ and cater to all visitors.

Water Safety Cooling off in one of the many water resources we have at our disposal, is a real treat on a hot day. Our security team appeals to parents and caretakers to ensure children have responsible safety supervision in and around water. WORDS BY LOUIS DE JAGER , VAL DE VIE ESTATE R ISK MANAGER

hildren must be watched at all times when they are

around water. This is true whether the water is a pool,

a pond, a river or a lake. Young children are especially

at risk and they can drown in less than 6 centimetres of water. On a hot afternoon earlier this year, one of our

security guards spotted a young boy left unattended in

the Pearl Valley pool, submerged under water after riding down the slide. Preventing a near-drowning, the security guard plunged into the pool and lifted the boy to safety. Even children who know how to swim are at risk for

drowning, especially in unfamiliar environments. During the lockdown period when recreational swimming was

not allowed, residents frequented the Berg river, and one family got a fright when their children and their friends, all under the age of 8, did not arrive at the picnic spot as planned. The children got distracted while going

downstream on their inflatables from an area higher up the river bank and passed the wrong side of the small river 72

GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2021

island. Luckily, the parents kept a cool head and waited for them further downstream. The part of the Berg River that runs next to our estate is shallow during summer

and there aren’t any visible rapids, but many parts of the river are high which changes the current and creates

dangerous rapids. No one, including adults, should ever swim alone - especially in a river.

Swimming in our lakes is only allowed when an organised event such as Torpedo SwimRun takes place under the

watchful eye of lifesavers. Our security team was alerted

a few weeks ago of children swimming in a lake on Pearl Valley after sunset. As a parent, I can’t imagine a worse

nightmare than trying to find a child who has disappeared in murky waters.

The dangers of drowning are a reality, and we urge

parents to supervise children at the pools and not allow them to venture near the river or the lakes unattended.
