Chairman’s Report Financial After the 2015 / 2016 Budget was circulated to all the members of the Homeowners’ Association for comment during the last week of February, the trustees approved it during the second week of March. The budget reflects the healthy financial position of the estate and the guiding financial principles including: an annual levy increase in line with the inflation rate; maintaining a capital fund, which must adequately cover planned infrastructure maintenance and capital replacements; building up a slush fund for any unforeseen capital expenses; and introducing expense reductions in line with the strategy to eliminate dependence on extra ordinary levy income. By the end of this budget year, our capital fund and slush fund combined would have accumulated to R19 million. These strategies promote a stable financial environment, and support the upward trend in property values. The declining availability of vacant erven in Val de Vie is contributing to a growing seller market, and we have seen a significant appreciation in m2 sales prices. The sales of the Polo Village units at a highest ever in the estate of R25 000 per m2 also attributes to a general repricing of houses.
Estate Rules The HOA recently communicated the changes made to the Estate Rules, via a Notice to all Homeowners and Residents. Please ensure that you are informed of these, by downloading a copy of the updated Estate Rules from the Community Portal or the Val de Vie website. The most important change to take note of was the
4
GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE
chairmans report_SUBBED.indd 4
- MARCH 2015
addition to Rule 11, which makes provision for the Manager to impose an Administration Fee, should a resident fail to make use of the PT Guest System. If you are unsure how, please contact the HOA Office for assistance on 021 863 6128 / 6103. We currently have about 50 people who are either not using the access code system, or haven’t registered yet. Please cooperate to avoid being hit with the administration fee, and don’t forget the other important rules like the speed limit of 40 km/h, the restraining of animals, and no parking on the verges. Thank you!
Communication Since last year the uptake of the Community Portal has more than doubled, residents are now making regular use of its functions and keep their contact information updated. We have therefore relaunched the Resident forum. The new forum provides homeowners and residents with an electronic noticeboard to interact with one another, by posting in one of the forum topics. You can choose which forums you would like to receive notifications for by subscribing to it. Log on to the Community Portal to see posts by residents that have already started making use of this function.
Water The Estate only has sufficient irrigation water to irrigate the public green areas and not the private gardens. We are therefore using potable municipal water for the irrigation of our gardens and, like any resident of Paarl, we have to take great care
in managing our private irrigation systems, as the cost can easily over-run with excessive use. Please note that we pay exactly the same as households in Paarl, and although the HOA is administering the metering and billing we do not charge any additional cost per litre above the cost charged by the council. The potable water usage is monitored electronically. We have set threshold levels in the radio unit attached to each meter, which enables the unit to detect certain flow-related events and to send the information through to the Facilities Manager. When a burst or slow leak alarm is triggered, the HOA usually sends a notification to the relevant resident. Please note that these notifications are sent as a courtesy, the HOA cannot be held responsible if a homeowner was not informed of an alarm. It should not be relied upon as foolproof insurance against any leaks or wastage. Regardless of the increase in the total public green areas being irrigated, the total irrigation water usage, for January and February 2015 combined, has decreased by 10% in comparison to the same time in the previous year. This was achieved by the efficiency of the newly installed wireless control system. We are grateful that Val de Vie has not been threatened by veld fires during these dry, windy summer months. Nonetheless, the security team has been vigilant during these times and will continue to be on standby to take care of any fire-related threats. Morne Bosch, Chairman of the HOA

A perfect wedding in a perfect setting
“We opted for a classic, elegant feel, and the end result was everything I dreamt of, and more.”
T
he 27th of December 2014 was the most beautiful and the best day of my life. I married my best friend. Imraan and I dated for 7 years, before he proposed on Christmas Day in 2013, in front of all our friends and family. I had no idea what I wanted for my wedding, all I knew was that I had a handsome, loving groom. Planning was fun! Imraan and I have similar taste so, naturally, it was easier. He joined me, and we made all decisions regarding the wedding together. Val de Vie was the first venue we visited, and we immediately knew that it was exactly what we wanted. The whole feel of the Estate was perfect, with the beautiful mountains, polo fields, and horses. On the first day I met the lovely Elsje Oosthuizen, our wedding coordinator, and every bride’s best friend! The one other thing I was very sure of, besides the fact that Imraan was the man I wanted to marry, was that Kobus Dippenaar would design my dress. His work is remarkable, and the fit is always perfect. On the day of our wedding, our home was buzzing with a chef cooking up the most divine lunch. My amazing make-up artist was Algria Ferreira. FJS Production sent Henroux and his marvellous crew to capture all the special moments, along with our incredible photographer, Ryan Graham. Kobus Dippenaar also came over, to help me get

dressed, and to make sure everything fitted perfectly. Walking down the aisle, and seeing my husband-to-be, my tears started flowing. I was so happy to finally be his wife. After years of friendship and courting, we were finally going to be one. The phenomenal Nico, of N Concepts and Styling, elegantly decorated our venue, the ballroom at Val de Vie, as well as our after party venue. We opted for a classic, elegant feel, and the end result was everything I dreamt of, and more. We had a sensational day, filled with good entertainment, an eventful polo game, incredible food, and the yummiest cocktails. We danced the night away, with friends and family to the sounds of our band, and our extraordinary DJ’s. Elsje Oosthuizen, and her amazing team, made sure everything ran smoothly. I honestly didn’t worry about a single thing. To every other bride-to-be, please opt for a wedding coordinator. Choose well though, be sure you get along, and that he/she knows exactly what you expect. Choose one with high expectations, and who pays attention to detail. Thank you to all our fantastic suppliers for making this day so special. We can’t wait for the rest of our lives together. Teneale Val de Vie

The 2015 Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo
O
n a magnificent Cape Town summer day, the 9th of March, guests of the 5th annual Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo donned their Polo best and stepped into a picture-perfect world, showcasing the best of Polo lifestyle. Val de Vie Estate, in the Paarl Franschhoek Valley, provided an impressive setting for a day filled with couture, beautiful guests, exhilarating polo and perfectly chilled Veuve Clicquot Champagne. This year’s event décor theme was designed to reflect Veuve Clicquot’s latest international ‘mail campaign,’ which was inspired by the days when Madame Clicquot used to communicate with her suppliers, agents and acquaintances via traditional mail. Even in today’s fast-moving electronic world, there’s still nothing quite like getting a letter or a package in the mail, and the event décor brought this theme beautifully to life - in a setting that felt more like a magical wonderland than an events space. For the first time in the history of the Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo, polo fans were treated to a high, 12-goal polo tournament. Shimmy’s Beach Club won the opening match against Team Nigus, while team Julius Bär won the riveting main game against team Veuve Clicquot. Both games featured talented South African and international players. Bentley was

there to not only throw in the ball at the start of the finale game, but to also entertain guests with their magnificent vehicles on the field during the traditional divit stomping at half-time. The Official Fashion Partners at the 2015 event, Jenni Button and Hilton Weiner, showcased their latest couture collection and quintessential looks on the catwalk, with some surprising and evocative pieces. Renowned creative director Warrick Gautier’s designs were inspired by iconic fashion photographers of the 70’s, where couture met the dark sultry streets of Paris. Hilton Weiner’s collection of custom-made suits was inspired by the typical reckless rebel who “danced the night away” during the jazz age, with monochromatic, graphic lines and strong, powerful silhouettes making a statement. There is perhaps no other sport that carries the prestige and class that the Game of Kings does. The opulent affair, co-owned by VIVIDLUXURY and Val de Vie Events, has grown beyond expectations over the years, attracting the cream of the crop of both local and international guests. This year’s VIP guest list included international actors Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Hannah New, Clara Paget, the Royal Warrant of Appointment for the Royal House of Belgium and renowned couture designer Fabienne Delvigne, and Val de Vie

some of South Africa’s finest celebrities such as Lee-Ann and Nicky van der Walt, Jeannie D, Tarina Patel, Jen Su, Maps Maponyane, Siv Ngesi, and many more. The Bentley car display has become a tradition at this glamourous daytime event. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the spectators who desire some serious torque. Associate Sponsor and Official Vehicle Partner, Bentley revealed their brand new Continental GT V8 for the first time in South Africa, making it to our shores only days before the big event. The luxury performance automobile manufacturer also chauffeur-drove guests who arrived via helicopter from the Val de Vie Estate landing strip to the chic clubhouse. Other vehicles on display included the Bentley Flying Spur V8, the Mulsanne and the Continental GT. The MC for the day, Maps Maponyane, entertained and captivated guests with his style, charm and wit, while the Polo Commentator for the day, the illustrious Matthew Pohl, kept guests glued to their seat, not a difficult task with the most riveting polo played on the Val de Vie fields to date. Veuve Clicquot believes in ‘letting life surprise you,’ and VIP guests, celebrities and media were treated to perfectly chilled Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label throughout the afternoon, before being surprised by an impromptu ‘Rosé toast,’ where
Val de Vie
VCM_SUBBED.indd 13
everyone toasted to Madame Clicquot, the pioneering force behind the house of Veuve Clicquot. Using a fun rose-tinted megaphone to announce the occasion, Veuve Clicquot rosé champagne was paired with pink macaroons – the perfect afternoon ‘high-tea’ while the sun was setting behind the exquisite Simonsberg mountains in the background. The Best Dressed competition for the day was judged by Elle magazine (the 2015 event’s Official Media Partner), event founder and CEO of VIVIDLUXURY Anina Malherbe-Lan, and Warrick Gautier, Creative Director of Jenni Button. Best Dressed Female went to acclaimed international actress and producer, Tarina Patel. Best Dressed Couple went to wine power couple Olive and Anthony Hamilton-Russell, while Best Dressed Male went to to the ever-stylish Siv Ngesi – a difficult choice given the high level of style and sophistication displayed at this year’s event. As the day drew to a close and the sun set behind the magical pink mountains, guests strolled over to the after party, hosted by Shimmy Beach Club, where they danced the night away. Rikki’s Taxis made sure that the guests of the Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo, in association with Bentley, arrived at their homes safe and sound – the perfect ending to an incredible day.

he 2015 AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction, which took place on Saturday 14th February, ascended to new heights when an astounding R10.565 million was raised for education in the Cape Winelands, achieving a significant 50% increase on the R7.045 million raised at the inaugural 2014 Auction. The entire proceeds of the 2015 Auction, without offset or deduction, will go to the Auction beneficiaries - charities actively involved with education, from infancy to adulthood, across the Western Cape. The glamorous two-day affair launched on the evening of Friday 13th February with the American Express Cape Wine Auction ‘Barrel Tasting & Preview,’ hosted at the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden in Stellenbosch. Guests embarked on a magical journey through wine, food, opera, and magnificent sculpture amidst a fynbos paradise while the sun set
abroad. This event is now firmly established on the South African social and fund-raising calendar, attracting worldwide interest and attention. This global showcase of South African wines was hosted by the accomplished Dan Nicholl, as Master of Ceremonies, together with the Auction Partners and Ambassadors, headed up by the Honorary Chairs for 2015, John and Erica Platter, the founders of the iconic Platter’s Wine Guide. An elated Mike Ratcliffe commented on behalf of his fellow Trustees and Ambassadors, “We are once again humbled and overwhelmed by the immense generosity shown at this event. Today we have witnessed another outstanding demonstration of the unity of the South African wine industry, and the philanthropic capacity of humankind.” James Benoit, CEO of AfrAsia Bank, the Auction’s headline sponsor for the second consecutive year, continued, “We are incredibly
over Table Mountain. Eight chefs flown in by sponsor, Relais & Châteaux, produced a
proud to be partnered with the Cape Wine Auction team, who share our commitment to making a real difference in
memorable evening of culinary excellence. The excitement culminated with the grand lunchtime Live Auction on Saturday 14th February at The Olive Press,
the lives of many South African children, by upholding Nelson Mandela’s belief that, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’.” Val de Vie

s soon as I spot the big Benjamin’s bus on the left to the Kliprug Minor Road, my heart rate slows down, my stress floats away, and I know that I am close to home. Driving through the gates into Val de Vie acts like a time machine. It transports me back to a time, which I have only seen in the movies, where families could go for a walk at 7pm without having to constantly look over their shoulder for danger, a time when children could run around playing without a care in the world, a time when you could have a chat with your neighbour over the hedge. It is this sense of ‘time-traveling’ that makes me grateful that I am a resident in Val de Vie. Sometime last year, I was on my way out when my car’s oil filter decided it was time to go. I was stuck next to the road about 300m from my house, waiting for the tow truck to fetch my
they give us peace of mind, but when I’ve had a really bad day – I’m sure most of you can relate – they always manage to brighten up my day. The smiles, with which they greet all the residents, can make even the darkest of days seem a little better. Let us not forget the Sports and Leisure Centre, fetching the post, having a chat with Shirley, going to the gym (a necessary evil), being intimidated by the mere presence of Mr Neethling – this building has so much to offer! Last, but most definitely not least, the Val de Vie Market. I count the weeks from one market to the next with childlike excitement, because I get to share my wonderful home with residents and non-residents alike. In fact, my first experience of Val de Vie was at one of these markets. I fell in love, and within a year I was
car. The sheer amount of people who stopped to ask if I was okay was astounding. One woman, whom I have never met before told me that I could go to her house and have something to drink while I waited. I politely declined, but the gesture would stay with me for a very long time. The camaraderie of residents in the valley of life is fantastic. But let me not stop at the residents. The friendly, and sometimes very funny, security personnel make living here a breeze. Not only, do
living here. Sitting on the stoep with a glass of bubbly in hand, staring out across the polo fields with the magnificent mountain as a backdrop, humbles me every single time. I will never get used to the sheer beauty that surrounds this Estate, and I don’t want to. I wake up every morning, grab my cup of coffee, go outside and greet the mountain, aware of how lucky I am to be alive and living in this wonderful place with its wonderful people.

on-profit organisation, Hope Through Action, officially opened its second indoor community sports centre, the Franschhoek Valley Community Sports Centre in Groendal, today on 15 January 2015. The opening was officiated by Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, together with the Mayor of Stellenbosch, Conrad Sidego, and Hope Through Action Patron, Philip Green. The centre ties in with Hope Through Action’s vision, “through the power of sport – to change lives, to bring hope and to release potential”, having provided the facilities where young people from the surrounding community, aged 6 to 18, now have the opportunity to enrol for various free sporting programmes. In this way, they are included in an uplifting environment that not only contributes to their physical development, but also plays a meaningful role in teaching them social, communication, health, and other life skills. This establishment aims to mirror the success that has been achieved at Hope Through Action’s first community sports centre in Mbekweni, approximately 60 km from Cape Town. The Mbekweni Community Sports VAL DE VIE

Centre was opened in 2010, in conjunction with the Soccer World Cup held in South Africa, and continually enriches the lives of hundreds of children. Hope Through Action places a particular emphasis on uplifting communities that are often overlooked, and are without much aid. The facilities in Groendal comprise a multi-purpose indoor pitch, training and meeting rooms, a resource centre, showers, and kitchen facilities. It is open seven days a week, and

operates according to a specific class schedule. Furthermore, like the Mbekweni facilities, it includes an early learning centre, which is operated by The Kusasa Project. The opening of the centre in Groendal was possible through donations raised by Philip Green. A man who wears many hats, Green is also the chairman for Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale. Bearing testimony to Green’s generosity, he was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in November 2014, for his philanthropic and business efforts. Amongst others involved with Hope Through Action, are three familiar South African faces with big names and even bigger hearts; namely, former swimming champion, Ryk Neethling, celebrity chef, Reuben Riffel, and former cricket star, Gary Kirsten. These three men not only contribute as ambassadors for the organisation, but also as excellent role models to the young people of South Africa. Ryk Neethling says, “It makes me incredibly proud to be a part of an initiative of this nature, and to have witnessed the opening of a
development that is going to shape children’s futures, nurture upcoming sports stars, and offer hope to a community.” Although Neethling is now involved on a full-time basis at Val de Vie Estate as Marketing Director, he keeps the world of sport close to his heart. Neethling continues, “I count myself fortunate to be able to see the benefits of sport being imparted to these children through these centres.” Val de Vie Estate is also closely connected with Hope Through Action as a sponsor of its work. In addition, the estate runs a hospitality internship that trains young people from the organisation. The internship programme has seen immense success in these members being hired in the industry. The sports centre is run on a volunteer basis, and the development thereof was facilitated by a number of companies, including Power Construction, who built the centre; Lyners, who managed the construction; and SCORE, a NGO who is responsible for the running of the centre and its sports programmes.

Education – dancing to the Tutu tune Schools in the Eastern Cape are set to receive thousands of lap desks to assist with classroom desk shortages in the province By Helene Brand Article courtesy of The Chamber Mag
I
n South Africa alone, an estimated 3 million children do not have a classroom desk to work at, and across the Sub-Saharan Africa region this number escalates to almost 100 million children attending school without the benefit of a classroom desk. With only a short period until the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) milestone arrives in 2015, education remains a major priority on the global development agenda. A key area of the MDGs for Education is the need to urgently improve learning outcomes, as well as access, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa where half of the world’s out-of-school children live. A primary challenge in South Africa and across Sub-Saharan Africa is the dire lack of classroom furniture in schools. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s Tutudesk Campaign, a beneficiary of the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme, is addressing classroom desk shortages by providing children with access to portable desks (known as Tutudesks). In doing so, this campaign is improving access, supporting literacy development and enhancing academic performance. The Tutudesk Campaign has recently joined forces with the UN’s Special Envoy for Education, Gordon Brown, in support of his Emergency Response Coalition for Education programme initiative. This Emergency Response Coalition aims to make rapid improvements in emerging market education development, in relation to the findings of the recently released Millennium Development Goals’ report. Within this partnership, the Tutudesk Campaign will also form part of the broader Special Envoy’s Global Education First Initiative. In answer to a recent call to action by the Archbishop Emeritus, the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet Fundraising Programme have joined hands with the campaign and will be providing 5 000 Tutudesks to beneficiary learners in the Eastern Cape - focusing specifically on schools that have less than 50% of the desks they need. “We believe that the Tutudesk Campaign has the ability to change and improve the lives of millions of African children and collaborating with international education programmes and prestigious South African organisations, such as MySchool, will assist us to stay on track for our 2020 goals,” says the campaign’s Director for Stakeholder Relations, Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe. The Tutudesk Campaign has already assisted 1.3 million learners in 24 African countries. Results from an independent research survey covering 16 000 Tutudesk recipients and 500 teachers indicated sharp improvements in multiple areas relating to literacy development

and academic performance: 80% of teachers said that learner’s handwriting was easier to read; 77% said that Tutudesk had made learning easier for their students and that they were able to teach more effectively; 76% of teachers advised that Tutudesks had significantly improved the overall learning experience for their pupils; and there was an overall 65% improvement in homework delivery. The Tutudesk Campaign, a beneficiary of the MySchool programme, relies on local and international funding to continue the work that they do and appeals to the public to support them by getting a MySchool card, and selecting them as the beneficiary.
What is MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet? The MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme is one of South Africa’s biggest community support initiatives. You can assist in raising funds for schools, charities and environmental organisations every time you swipe your free MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card at retail partners such as Woolworths, Waltons, Toys R Us, Engen Foodstops, Kalahari.com and many more (there is a full list of partners in your area on MySchool.co.za). They then donate a percentage of what you’ve spent to the beneficiary of your choice. The system allows cardholders to make a difference to worthy causes without it costing them a cent! Every time you swipe, you donate to schools, environmental organisations and various charities, and you can choose the cause close to your heart. More than 800 000 South Africans carry these cards and thanks to them R1 million is donated every week to help more than 10 000 schools and charities! You too can make a difference – support causes close to your heart with a MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card.
How it works 1. Get your free card online at www.myschool.co.za or call 0860 100 445 2. Choose your beneficiary. You can support “up to three schools, charitable organisations or animal welfare organisations. 3. Swipe your card to raise funds. Shop at any one of over 1 500 retailers, or partner stores and swipe your card when you pay. A small portion of your transaction will be given back to your selected beneficiaries, on your behalf.

ascade Country Manor, situated in the Cape Winelands, is proud to announce that it was recently awarded the first exclusive permit to provide abseiling excursions down Paarl Rock. It was granted by the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, which is managed by the Klein Drakenstein Municipality. The permit allows the hotel to operate the excursions legally within the reserve, and thus the impact on the natural environment is limited, whilst environmental and cultural education is made available to the public. Abseiling trips are led by qualified guide and experienced rock climber, Eckhardt Conradie, who belongs to the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) and the Wilderness Search and Rescue. An exhilarating experience for all who partake in the activity, abseiling off of Paarl Rock is suitable for both novices and expert climbers – the decline is steep but steady, and the drop nearly 100 metres. Thrill-seekers are also able to abseil down the 15 metre-high local Cascade Waterfall, which is the lodge’s namesake, and one of the special attractions in the

Along with abseiling, Cascade Country Manor offers a range of outdoor activities – such as mountain biking, rock climbing and hiking – for those looking for a taste of adventure while on holiday. Thus its guests, as well as visitors to the area, are provided with a unique opportunity to experience Paarl at its best. The hotel offers guided tours of the Winelands, the Cape Peninsula, as well as cultural and historical tours through the city of Cape Town itself. Hikers can also book a guided trek up the mighty Table Mountain through the hotel. Meandering through the property’s ancient olive groves is a popular pastime for visitors, and those with a penchant for something a little more high velocity can mountain bike on the 4km, 5km or 8km forest trails. The olive oil created on the property is drawn from the two cultivars on the estate – Frantoio and Leccino – and then gently combined, which creates an interesting blend of flavour. Chef Volker, who hosts the tastings and offers wholesome, wood-fired bread with the tasting, is passionate about olive oil pressing and educating people on the benefits of authentic, virgin olive oil. A year with Kinder Ark
W
e opened our doors to new and old faces, with the beginning of yet another year, here at Kinder Ark on Val de Vie. As teachers, we have great appreciation and adoration for our school and workplace. Being able to start each day through the eyes of a child is a priceless experience, and reminds us of the value that lies within the small things. We celebrated our Valentine’s Day at school with the perfect love, a love for each child’s individuality and uniqueness in creativity. With glitter and sparkles, red hearts and loads of chocolate, we had an unforgettable day at school. We treated moms and dads with an everlasting memory of youthful innocence. Pure joy and happiness are what our days are filled with here at Kinder Ark. When there is a soft little heart that needs some loving care, there is a teacher always ready to console with a big bear hug. Here we love playing, we love being barefoot, and we love getting dirty. We love our friends, and we love learning new things. This year, at Kinder Ark, is a year of walking in light alongside our children, a year of walking in wisdom towards each unique individual, and a year of walking in LOVE as a school. May your year also be filled with an everlasting love and light. Kinder Ark blessings Val de Vie

WP triathlon championships
T
he Western Province Triathlon Championships were held at Val de Vie on 8 December 2014, with roughly 300 athletes competing. The weather was great for a triathlon and it was declared a non-wetsuit swim. Taking gold in the men’s category was Matt Trautman, who completed the Olympic distance (consisting of a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run) in a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 57 seconds. In first place on the podium for the ladies was Celest Renaud, in a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes and 18 seconds. Well done to all the residents that took part in the event! Thank you to the photographer, Brett Natrass, for the action photos of the event.
Here is what Brett had to say about the event: “It was my first visit to Val de Vie, and it was met with the most fantastic morning. I arrived early to capture some of the athletes getting ready, and was welcomed by the stunning scene overlooking the lakes and the houses. The whole day ran smoothly from my side, I was assisted by the guards at the gate and the security officials in and around the estate. For a family event of this nature, Val de Vie is the best for a child-friendly, worry-free event; it was indeed a fantastic day out for me.

he Estate is in the process of installing irrigation systems in areas where construction work is completed, this includes the verges of Berg River Way as well as the park area, next to The Vines. The surface of these areas, as well as the green belts in Village 1, was smoothed out with soil and the grass has established itself satisfactorily. This process will continue as soon as more soil becomes available on site. The drainage channels created in Village 10 are working well, and the plants and grasses have started to

This area has improved significantly since our previous Newsletter in the December Issue, and will be a refreshing route for joggers when completed. The Landscape Committee has also decided to start replacing some of the Liriopes, which are not growing well in full sun. Servest’s Landscape Maintenance Report create contrast, while maintaining the grass texture. Fynbos and indigenous plants were planted in the open area next to SG304, and an irrigation system was installed to help these plants settle in. Around 60 tons of stones and boulders were removed, and substituted with 50 cubic metres of rich soil to cover the remaining stones, and thus creating a practical surface for maintenance. The Petunias at the main entrance, as well as the Sport & Leisure Centre, boasted a spectacular show of colour, but as their season has come to an end they have been replaced with Dianthus. The pots were planted Vinca’s and will be replaced with Pansies, when the first frost of the winter sets in. Village 1 was landscaped with numerous Waterberry trees, but unfortunately these trees lost their leaves and developed deformed growth. After extensive research and consultations with tree specialists, it was established that mites,
44
grapeVine magazine

Servest Newsletter_SUBBED.indd 44
transferred by insects, affected the trees. We have subsequently treated all the verge trees with Imidachloprid, and the new growth appears to be normal. The trees will now have the opportunity to reshoot, and any dead branches will be removed within about a month. We urge homeowners to also treat their trees in order to keep them healthy. Imidachloprid is applied at a rate of 20ml per big tree. It is vital that you read the information leaflet, because there is a period during which the fruit of treated trees cannot be harvested for consumption. The frequent power outages have caused disruptions in the irrigation cycle, the effect of which becomes quickly evident during the blazing summer months. This problem will, however, be resolved with the new systems, which will allow remote access to start and control the watering of Estate gardens. Derick Germishuys Servest

Babylonstoren Garden Tips
I
f you’re looking for a little inspiration to get your hands dirty in the garden, it only takes one visit to the beautiful Babylonstoren to get you dreaming, and planning, to grow an organic garden of your own. There are few places that compare when it comes to creative ideas for wholesome growing, and who better to ask for some gardening tips than their very own Horticulturist, Liesl de Waal.
Photographs courtesy of Babylonstoren • Life in an organic garden starts in the soil. The most important job when growing a healthy garden is to build up the soil with regular additions of organic material. • Mulch, mulch, mulch! Apply a thick layer of organic materials to the surface of an area of soil, and stick to materials that are easy to find locally. At Babylonstoren we make use of straw, woodchips and shredded vines. • You can dream big when planning a new garden, but rather start small in order to gain experience and confidence. • You will need to do your homework and plan carefully to ensure that you follow seasons and natural rhythms. • We would recommend that you start with healthy seeds, seedlings and fruits which thrive locally, and that you enjoy eating at home. • You can value diversity by including different plant combinations to your garden, for example, the numerous indigenous plants. • Remember to regularly rotate your crops, to avoid a build-up of pests and depletion of nutrients. • You should determine which pests you experience problems with, before spraying or adding any chemicals to your plants, while keeping in mind even organic products can be detrimental to your garden’s health. • You should keep an eye on weeds and pull it out while it is still small. Preventing new weed seeds from entering the garden is a major step towards control. • Grow with your garden; keep on learning by observing, keeping records, reading, sharing with fellow gardeners, and experimenting with new ideas. • Most importantly you need to love your garden by spending time in it – pottering, planting, harvesting, watering and observing daily growth. Find joy in the small things and beauty in the imperfections. Perfection is not the aim, and disasters are not the end of the world, but rather a part of learning, adaptation and survival.

Colours This year we’ll be seeing a diversity of colour, with a big trend of Marsala Pantone’s, deep hues and vibrant colours. Paint colours for the home still revolve around sophisticated basics, with preference for cleaner whites and smokier neutrals. Feature walls are out, area-painting schemes are in, and beige is a thing of the past. Black is — you guessed it — the new black. This is especially true when it comes to remodelling, with black hardware, black fixtures, and black trim popping up everywhere. A pared back palette of black, off-whites, and greys, make for a simple look this season. Another growing trend is dark Navy that works well with pink, cream, grey, coral, ochre and sage.

Bring nature into your home
Textures derived from nature, whether they are animal, mineral, or vegetable are in. Think botany, insect prints, floral, fossils, bone, wood, bark, stone and organic shapes; these are making their way in on sofas, curtains and walls. We want materials, and finished pieces, to look authentic; we are using them in a more simple way to appreciate their beauty – raw wood furniture. I have to mention the growing popularity of cacti as a décor accent. There is often a plant that epitomises the season – in the last few years we’ve seen succulents and then air plants – but now the one to have is the cactus. Whether they are big or small, fake or real, their hardiness and sculptural appeal means that you’ll be seeing them more and more in interiors.

Wallpaper
Wallpaper is still coming back strong, and I think the next year is going to provide even more options and expansions in this market. Look for more bold patterns on walls and ceilings.
Global influences
Prints are alive and well, with everything from paisley and plaid to kilm and ikat making an appearance on fabrics. Relaxed graphics, loose geometrics and blurred lines are useful for softening a monochrome palette, while the striking chevron prints continue to be popular. There has been a strong shift toward ethnic prints, with its diverse colours. Plenty of textures are being used. A lot of leather and animal hide combined with handicrafts like crocket, crewel and applique will be seen together.

The Industrial look
The industrial influence is very big this year. Furniture with skinny metal legs, old museum and library-style filing and display cabinets, and Edison-style filament light –bulbs in exposed wire shades will be seen in a lot of interiors.

Top Interior Design Trends for 2015 Metals
Brass is becoming one of the major players when choosing finishes. The “new” brass trends will be a more of a worn, un-polished brass. Mixing warm metals, such as copper, rose-gold and black, with cool ones, like silver, is very popular now.

Handrails and balustrades
4.3.5 Front doors shall be timber-framed and ledged (lock rail), with timber of a minimum dimension of 110mm when viewed from the front. Any solid panels shall be fielded timber to match the frame (rule). Door finish may be varnish, oil or paint in colours to HOA approval. Homeowners are encouraged to give consideration to choosing handles and ironmongery to suite the Val de Vie aesthetic.
4.5.1 All external balustrades are to be of a steel type with the elements (except support posts), having a maximum width of 10mm in any one direction, and to be composed of primarily curvilinear elements, typical of decorative wrought iron work. Balustrades to have masonry piers at corners and changes of direction. All balustrades to be black or a dark grey, unless prior approval is obtained from the Home Owners Association.
Plaster mouldings 4.7.1 The colour palette and the style of the estate encourage the use of plaster moulding to create relief on the facades. The use of corbelling and banding below eaves and along the line of window head and windowsill height is strongly encouraged. Window surrounds will also be permitted. 4.7.2 The use of quoining, while requiring a delicate touch, is also encouraged where appropriate.
Pergolas 4.8.1 A pergola element is mandatory in front of the garage or an equal length of pergola provided elsewhere on the street-facing faรงade. 4.8.2 All pergola members are to have decorative shaped ends where the end is not fixed to a wall.
External lighting 4.9.1 All external lights shall be traditional carriage or lantern type units in the colour black or charcoal. Given the rural nature of the environment, homeowners are encouraged to limit or omit external lighting as far as possible. Val de Vie

outh Africans must learn to live with recurrent electricity cuts for the next few years as Eskom grapples with the twin problems of building new capacity, while playing catch-up with the maintenance of its old, neglected power stations. As a result, the queries regarding Val de Vie’s policy on generators started rolling in. Although there was an Estate Rule regulating the procedure, the Homeowners’ Association decided to update this Rule to provide for stricter noise restrictions, in terms of which only generators that run below 1500 revolutions per minute (with a maximum sound pressure level of 51dB), will be allowed. This will be equivalent to the sound of a dishwashing machine. Existing homeowners will need to submit an application to the Homeowners’ Association

should they wish to install a portable or permanent generator on their property. This application must consist of full specifications of the particular generator, as well as a site plan of the house indicating the intended location of the generator. New erf owners, who are currently in the planning phase of their homes can instruct their architect to clearly indicate the location and specifications on the site plans that are submitted to the Controlling Architects for approval. The architect will need to make clear mention of this in their submission, as specific approval from the Homeowners’ Association will be required before an owner will be allowed to install a generator. You are welcome to contact the Homeowners’ Association should you have any further questions in this regard.
Existing homeowners will need to submit an application to the Homeowners’ Association should they wish to install a portable or permanent generator on their property.

e would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new homeowners to Val de Vie Estate, as well as our homeowners who were away over the festive break. Congratulations to the parents whose
little ones started school this year; we could see the enthusiasm and ‘anxiety’ in some of the little ones’ faces. There have been some exciting challenges for our security development and enhancements,

here at Val De Vie. One in particular is our PT Guest system. We are pleased to report that this has made it considerably more pleasant, and easier, for our Homeowners to receive guests without unnecessary delays. However, we still have some homeowners who do not make use of the PT Guest system, which has subsequently caused delays for their guests when entering the Estate. We therefore urge you to please make use of the system. With the continuous development of the Estate, we have more pets arriving on a daily basis. I would like to take this opportunity to remind our homeowners and residents of a few important Estate regulations, which all homeowners and residents agreed to. • Only three pets will be allowed per residence, limited to two of a kind, for example two dogs and one cat or visa versa. • All dogs must be on leash when they are walking on the common property, including the Polo Fields and the Berg River. • Any dog excrement must be picked up by the person walking or running their pets, and disposed of in a responsible manner. • Pets (dogs and cats) must not create or cause any noise disturbance to neighbours, i.e. excessive barking or meowing will not be tolerated.
• Respective pet owners (homeowners and residents) are responsible and liable for any disturbance, damages or loss, caused or created by their pets. • Homeowners and Residents need to ensure that their pets are properly enclosed, and are not able to exit the property without supervision. These are just some of the basic requirements we ask our homeowners and residents to please adhere to and enforce. Please inform the security office of any animal-related problems, in order for them to assess the problem and follow the necessary procedure. We would further like to take

this opportunity to appeal to homeowners who host guests, to kindly consider their neighbours with regards to noise levels. It’s the little ‘niggles’ we need to address, to ensure they do not develop into problems which seem unmanageable. On the positive side, Val De Vie was awarded the prestigious ‘Safest Home Award in Africa’ at the recent International Property Awards held in Dubai. We can all be extremely proud of this award.
