A Step Closer to Realising the ‘One Estate’ Vision First Townhall of the Year a Huge Success The energy that a particularly sunny February has brought to the Estate spread to the Polo Pavilion Ballroom as the year’s first Val de Vie Homeowners Association (HOA) Townhall took place on 2 February. The Townhall was the first of many regular in-person engagements that the HOA plans to hold on a quarterly basis. We’ve all been missing essential human connections with our neighbours, friends and the new families that have moved to Val de Vie Estate during lockdown. These events are a way for us all to reconnect as a community to create an even more beautiful and resilient Estate for the future. One of the central updates provided to owners and residents concerned the process to merge the various HOAs and bodies corporate across Val de Vie Estate into ‘One Estate’. These entities were organically established as the Estate developed, and will be consolidated into one master HOA to be governed by a single combined constitution. The amalgamation process is at an advanced stage of due diligence, and homeowners can expect a further update at the next event. Working with the HOA, the Val de Vie
developer shared plans for the on-the-ground growth of the ‘One Estate’ vision at Val de Vie Estate. These include the launch of a new recreational Val de Vie Club with amenities such as a resort-style pool, skateboard area, putt-putt course and additional Padel tennis courts. A Val de Vie Boutique Hotel, Polo Family Offices, The Polo Village Apartments Phase 2 and Val de Vie Evergreen’s expansion was also discussed. Less dazzling but equally critical, work is continuously under way to reassess and improve Estate security. This includes the installation of over 100 additional security cameras while maintaining residents’ privacy and upgrading security checks for all drivers at all entrances. The next Towhnall is expected to be held at the end of May. Further details will be communicated closer to the time.

Future Polo Stars “After seeing kids play polo against big guys, it only shows that horses are the greatest equaliser in the world. No matter what you weigh, the little fellow is your equal on a horse.” - Will Rogers Children given the opportunity to play polo develop strong communication and leadership skills, in addition to the many physical benefits. “Kids can start playing polo as soon as they have enough strength to wield a mallet and stay on a small pony”, says Kevin Rixon, Val de Vie Polo Club Manager. There is no age restriction to playing polo as long as a person is in good health, reasonably fit and can ride a horse sufficiently. Polo is a team sport that dates back hundreds of years and is loved by many because of the game’s complexities. It is a challenging sport because you are required to have total control of the horse you are on while using both hands for the game’s duration. While it looks effortless to play polo, it requires moving as a unit
with your teammates and coordinating with your horse. You don’t need to be an expert horse rider to get started, but you do need to know the basics of horse riding. Newbies are encouraged to book riding lessons at the Val de Vie Riding School prior to booking a polo lesson (contact details at the bottom of the page). Lessons at the Val de Vie Polo Club involve the rules of polo, essentials of hitting the ball, and fundamentals of the game.

Message from our Winemaker Despite the intense heatwaves we have experienced for the past couple of weeks, the 2022 harvest will most likely be at least two weeks later than usual. This is because a moderately cool and rather wet December preceded the heat waves, resulting in the ripening of the grapes at different stages. Many green berries in-between ripened grapes are not a concern because our vineyards staff are hard at work cutting away most of these to give the mature bunches an even better chance of ripening. All we need now is patience and for these intense heatwaves to pass. Luckily in the meantime, we have ice cold wines ready at L’Huguenot for you to enjoy to get us through this heat! Place your order: orders@lhuguenot.com
The French Sport of Drinking Boules is the French cousin to lawn bowling. It is also called Pétanque and is enjoyed with a glass of wine in hand. The game is played with multiple steel balls and a single smaller ball. The large balls are called boules and the small one is a cochonette (meaning “piglet”). The purpose of the game is to win by throwing your boules to land closest to the cochonette. Anyone can easily and quickly learn to play this ancient game. The Wijn boules court is sponsored by PSG Winelands and is available to enjoy during Unwind Fridays. Make sure to book your 30 minute slot: Connect@wijnbar.co.za | 082 616 7415

In Tune with the Lunar Calendar The first Full Moon Ride, presented by SPECIALIZED Paarl, took cyclists all over the trails of our Estate. Residents explored paved roads, dirt tracks and the bike park on a combination of traditional bikes as well as e-bikes. On Thursday, 17 February, as the full moon started to rise, residents of all ages took off from Wijn at L’Huguenot Vineyards and participated in either the 20km (those over 15 years old) or the family-friendly 10km ride. In partnership with SPECIALIZED Paarl, bike rides will take place on the third Thursday of every month for the remainder of the year. Residents have the opportunity to book a Vado E-Bike and put it through its paces. Email marketing@valdevie.co.za to secure your bike. Lights and helmets are strongly encouraged for all riders. Follow the Val de Vie Neighbours page on Facebook for bike ride updates.

Hope for Special Needs Children
More than 20 children with special needs now have the opportunity to reach their full potential in a new and improved environment at The Good Hope Day Care Centre (GHDCC) in Mbekweni. This project is a dream come true for Xoliswa Mjezu, who opened GHDCC seven years ago at her home when she realised that there were no special needs centres in the entire Mbekweni, with a population of 60 000 people, that could look after her autistic daughter.
The Val de Vie Foundation collaborated with social investment managers Valcare, and at the 2019 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day held at Pearl Valley, raised the initial R650 000 to fund the project. After that, local businesses opened their hearts to make the centre a reality, despite facing challenging Covid-19 lockdown regulations. The centre is built on the Hope Through Action Foundation grounds, next to the Mbekweni Community Sports Centre.
This creates a safe community hub where GHDCC shares resources like security, electricity and meals and saves costs. The centre is equipped with features that make the space conducive for special needs childrens’ learning and playing development. Learners with different levels of special needs, including cerebral palsy, children with severe intellectual challenges, highly functional learners with learning challenges and autistic learners are accommodated at GHDCC.
Cultivating Entrepreneurial Mindsets In January 2022 the Val de Vie Foundation and the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy (FHA) announced their partnership in training the next generation of entrepreneurs in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. Learners at the Val de Vie Foundation Entrepreneurship Academy partake in a new course that is part of the full-time curriculum at the FHA and aims to provide students with the knowledge and skill to start their own small businesses. The course will also be offered to the broader public in 2022.
Cheslin Grobbler, CEO at Fleet Coffee Company, welcomed the Val de Vie Foundation Entrepreneurship Academy class of 2022 on their first day. Sharing his own entrepreneurship journey with the students, Cheslin motivated the class to take their education and training seriously. Fleet Coffee Company is based on our Estate and in other locations in the Winelands. The Val de Vie Foundation is proud to support young entrepreneurs like Cheslin in realising their dreams. www.valdeviefoundation.co.za
