COMMUNITY THROUGH PURPOSE Message from the Editor

Throughout our lives we are called on to renew and reinvent ourselves. In nature, it may be a dramatic metamorphosis. For us, it may be a physical, mental or perhaps a spiritual transformation. But there can be no better season than spring to mark change, an opportunity to begin anew and celebrate being alive.

SADDLE STORIES

From September, our already spectacular Boland scenery is brushed with vigorous new colour and the air hints at warmer days to come. Longer days allow us to spend more time outdoors, opt for healthier, fresh food and return to fitness routines that may have been neglected in the heart of winter. Mentally we declutter and feel energised enough to reconnect and socialise. As a family-focused estate, we offer many ways for families to spend quality time in nature. It is here in the fresh air where we teach our children some of the most valuable life lessons – like embracing change, showing progress, and letting go. Sometimes all we need is a cue for a fresh start. Spring is the perfect signal.

W

e have had to dig deep for good news stories in

recent weeks. While the world grapples with finding

some normality amid a pandemic, our country faced

some of the worst civil unrest in decades. However, it

has been heartening to witness communities from across the spectrum come together to protect their homes and businesses. Law-abiding citizens united to ensure that

chaos and destruction do not reign victorious, proving yet again just how resilient our nation is.

These events confirm that our country’s future depends on solid communities that can protect their homes and families and their places of work, communal facilities, schools, and food supply.

As residents of South Africa’s safest estate, these events provide a platform to realise how fortunate we are to live in a safe and beautiful environment. While we recognise

that many millions of South Africans face a very different reality in a vastly unequal society, the emotional and financial investment that Val de Vie Estate offers is unsurpassed.

While the popularity and necessity to live in a secured community has steadily increased in the last two

decades, this growth will accelerate following recent happenings in our country. More and more multi-

generational families are choosing to live at Val de Vie

Estate. With the steady progress at Val de Vie Evergreen retirement village, we now have many examples of three generations of families enjoying what the estate has to

offer. The decision to live at Val de Vie Estate provides residents with a vast array of benefits. It has been the

focus of estates over the years to focus on security only, and while this serves as a peace of mind, it does little to

provide all the other communal facilities which are required for humans to thrive.

In the pressure cooker environment of Covid-19 induced lockdowns, residents can utilise facilities and the natural environment for exercise and stress relief, dependent on the restriction levels. We see most residents take advantage of these facilities but concurrently have

witnessed vandalism and a waste of security’s time

and resources. Over the past year and a half, the levels of frustration and aggression of the youngsters in our community have increased.

It is essential to remember that we are part of a community, an extended family of sorts. To ensure that our community remains a tranquil oasis in a volatile world, we all have a

role to play. To do so, we have to regularly ask ourselves what we are doing to improve our community.

As we enter the spring of 2021, let us all have a little more

kindness and understanding for our Val de Vie Estate family and those communities around us who are struggling to

get by. Only through empathy and compassion can we limit friction and ensure that our families are happy and safe in our oasis in the Valley of Life. Until next time.

home offers shelter and aligns with the rest of our most basic psychological needs of food, water and sleep according to Maslow’s Hierarchy. Safety and the sense of belonging follow. Lockdown regulations and the flexibility to work from home created a huge increase in demand in homes in security estates since March 2020. But it pales in comparison to the interest shown in Val de Vie Estate, following the looting events in Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal in July this year. Positioning our estate as a leading wellness estate, combined with multiple local and international awards and strategic marketing campaigns, has placed us at the top of mind of South African families. Foreigners continue to invest in our estate, anticipating an increase in property prices due to demand. The interest in the last few La Vue stands has resulted in very little rental opportunities on the estate. While families design their dream homes and wait for construction to be completed in La Vue, renting a home in The Vines or a Pearl Valley Golf Lodges is popular.

Road infrastructure and landscaping at The Acres is well underway and creates a sense of the relaxed country lifestyle that awaits in this quiet part of the estate, surrounded by majestic mountain views. More than half of the available Pearl Valley Golf Villas at The Acres have been sold, some as individual shares and some as full titles, indicating that our SuperSport TV advertising campaign is bearing fruits. Golfers stand to benefit greatly from the Pearl Valley Golf Villas, as a single share of only R1 050 000 includes 365 days of pre-paid golf while residing in the Golf Villa. When not in use, the property can be placed into a rental pool to yield maximum investment return. A new healthcare centre opened its doors at Val de Vie Evergreen, offering 24-hour care in three separate wards. Until now, Val de Vie Evergreen residents had access to a healthcare room at the Clubhouse. The new centre is bigger and better equipped with electronic beds, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, DStv and a lounge/dining area. A comprehensive range of in-patient care services is offered on both a long and short-term basis and includes frail care, palliative care and memory care. The facility also caters for overnight stays, in the instances where a patient might require a couple of nights’ care outside of their home. The centre furthermore has a support clinic 12

River Farm is set to be one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods on Val de Vie Estate

Val de Vie Evergreen residents have a new healthcare facility area for regular health checks, nursing procedures and vaccination programmes. Planned for end of September this year, is the launch of the brand new Val de Vie Evergreen Apartments. With occupation due in 2023, Val de Vie Evergreen Apartments will start from R1,7 million and range from 46 square metres in size. Visit the showroom next to Reuben’s & Co Cafe at The Yard Wellness Centre. Construction of Val de Vie Evergreen Phase 3 will soon commence, offering revised designs of two, three and four bedroom retirement homes. No other development on Val de Vie Estate has created as much hype as River Farm. Located in the most northern part of the estate, bordering the Berg River, a number of river-front stands were

launched in 2020 and sold out within a few days. The remaining stands, some overlooking a vineyard, will be launched in the next couple of weeks, and we anticipate further record-breaking sales. In the December edition of the Grapevine we’ll share more about an exciting development called North Pointe Residences that consits of only a handful of stands ideal for investment purposes. I

n the past there used to be a noticeable drop-off in weekday rounds through the colder, wetter months, but like last year, this year has remained busy throughout winter. It is not only wonderful to see people playing golf and enjoying the facilities we have on offer, but it’s a reminder that in these stressful times, it is the perfect place to get out into the open air, free our minds and recharge. Our ladies’ weekly clinics and member competitions are fully subscribed most weeks and we’ve seen a surge in new memberships – a trend reflected throughout the Western Cape. And while golfers relax, finish their rounds, and refuel at our restaurant, the support for our excellent facilities extends to residents who are taking full advantage of the well-designed healthy dishes on The Valley restaurant menus, and keeping fit at the gym. The restrictions around the Covid-19 pandemic have affected our business, but one thing we have all had to become is flexible and adaptable at a minute’s notice. That’s why I am especially proud of our restaurant team headed by Chef Edmore Ruzoza. The team has adapted to challenging times and are consistent in service and food delivery. There is always room to do better, but I am pleased at the progress and development in this sector. The work with Rob Arnold from RCA Consulting is also showing great results and we look forward to picking up momentum with our food and wine pairings, curry nights and Italian evenings. Thank you to everyone who has supported us and at the time of writing this article, putting us ahead of our budget. The bigger picture is also looking good. Behind the scenes we work tirelessly to make sure that golfers enjoy a world-class experience - and that takes a bit of ‘sweat equity’ and forward planning. We have embarked on several course upgrades, special projects, cart path curbing, cart path levelling, irrigation upgrades and tee box levelling. I am pleased to report that we have also managed to remove over 10 000 square metres of invasive grasses. Our on-site nursery has been a boon as we have been able to remove these grasses and seamlessly replace the gaps with sod. This ensures that the kikuyu does not germinate again. We had tried to scarify and seed the areas using a method that was only 30 percent successful but now that we have gone the route of sodding out, we are 90 percent successful. This is a big win, and we are so grateful that the grass nursery project was approved and is now an invaluable resource. With the rain and consistent care, the course is now presenting itself beautifully, and our greens and fairways are good, as are the bunkers. 15

GRAPEVINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

GOLF

Over the next three months we will complete work on all the bigger bunkers by rolling down the faces, enhancing the flashes and reducing the size of some areas. There are long term benefits: a lot less time to prepare them in the mornings and more access points available to players entering and exiting the bunkers to play their shots. Before the bunker edges were rolled down, a course staff member would have to manually rake up the sides, which took over 30 minutes per big bunker. Now preparation involves a machine-operated ride on bunker rake, with manually raking only required on the bunker faces. This gives us a great advantage and is another example of perhaps ‘thinking out the bunker’ making it possible to do all the required work with a smaller team. This system helps keep our annual maintenance fees in check without compromising on standards. Another area where we never compromise is in supporting the next generation of young golfers. In many ways we are still in the early stages of running our inhouse Pearl Valley Junior Academy, which was created at the beginning of 2020 but is growing steadily with many of its students showing great form. The programme we offer is starting to pay off and will continue to evolve. The juniors in our clinic are working hard at their games and are reaping the rewards. It has been wonderful to see them lift trophies in the Boland amateur events as

well as scoring victories for our Kruger league team, which is currently positioned second on the log. I would like to thank the parents who have chosen to enrol their kids into our junior and junior elite programmes. As the programmes grow, it brings us closer to our goal of one day running one of the best academies in the country. The potential is all there and so is our capacity to welcome back our international visitors. In the past, one of the things I enjoyed the most through our seasons was seeing so many cultures from across the globe on our course, the sound of foreign languages being spoken and the happiness and excitement these visitors bring with them. South Africa, as we all know, has so much to offer and experience. In closing, as our country and world are in uncertain times, do whatever you can to remain positive. Take the time to spend outdoors and in nature, spend time with your loved ones and family. Do those things you have always wanted to do but have put them off until later in your life. Enjoy spring and enjoy watching nature come alive.

Longer, warmer days mean more time on South Africa’s number two golf course

ducation as a ray of light

A Mandela Day unlike any other. That’s how we’ll remember 18 July 2021. Amidst a time of civil unrest, looting and violence, our beautiful nation again had to prove our resilience. Various sectors of society united to support law and order, standing firm as beacons of hope. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) @Home Learning Yeboneers, undeterred by the chaos in other parts of the country, continued paying visits to learners in their homes, helping them grasp basic principles of language and maths. The Val de Vie Foundation celebrated Mandela Day on July 30th by assisting the WCED and Hope Through Action and their seven partners to lead the @Home Learning program. The Val de Vie Foundation sponsored 12 500 copies of the bilingual Nal’ibali newspaper, produced specifically for Mandela Day, to be distributed through 67 home visits in each of the eight hubs supported by the Val de Vie Foundation. The colourful 16-page supplements, a combination of English/Afrikaans and English/isiXhosa, were narrated by 125 trained interns to bring across carefully curated stories and

games to improve literacy and encourage a love for reading. The interns engaged with young children from under-resourced communities in Paarl, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Mbekweni, Bonnievale, Rawsonville and Malmesbury. To have a look at the complete supplement, visit the Val de Vie Foundation webpage www.valdeviefoundation.co.za The Foundation was overjoyed to also hand over 5000 donated books worth R150 000 from Nal’ibali for the @Home Learning programme. Saleem Mukuddem, Chief Financial Officer for Nal’ibali remarked: “Our vulnerable children received books to be used, read and treasured. The books are age-appropriate and written in the mother tongue of our children, providing the most vulnerable with content that will be used, read and treasured.”

Honouring our healthcare workers

While the Val de Vie Foundation’s primary focus is on funding and facilitating educational programmes, we can’t ignore the incredible work done by our healthcare workers, specifically over the past 18 months. They have been at the forefront fighting the Covid-19 battle; from testing for the virus to taking care of those who contracted it and now vaccinating us to ward off future infections. Our healthcare workers are indeed the unsung heroes of our community. The Val de Vie Foundation is delighted to have been able to organise 100 scrumptious lunches consisting of lasagne, salads and cupcakes for the incredible team at TC Newman Community Health Care Centre in Paarl East. This celebration will take place on September 5th, catered by Café Frenchie at Rembrandt Square. As many Val de Vie Estate residents can attest, the TC Newman centre provides our community members with a caring and professional attitude as we line up to get our ‘jabs’. To the TC Newman team: We will never forget your kindness and dedication during these trying times. 22

Children who can read are one of our country’s greatest assets

The true impact of the WCED @Home Learning Yeboneers

One morning in July, a young boy wandered into a home in Kyamandi where the WCED Yeboneers were conducting an @Home Learning session. After having quite a lot of fun with the other children, one of the WCED Yeboneers took the boy inside for a Wordworks training session where it became apparent that something was wrong. The boy didn’t respond when spoken to and couldn’t read or write. The WCED Yeboneer requested that the boy was assessed, as she thought he was very shy for his age. It was then discovered that the young boy couldn’t hear. She then paid a home visit, and it was here that she learnt the boy’s name was Isaac and that he contracted meningitis as a baby and lost his ability to hear. Tests confirmed that Isaac was entirely deaf, even at the highest amplified frequencies. He was tested at the Cochlear Implant Unit at Tygerberg Hospital who continue to look for surgical options. In the meanwhile he was enrolled at the School for the Deaf and his mother has been given a government grant to support him. It is thanks to the @Home Learning programme that Isaac now has hope for a better life. His mother now also receives a monthly food parcel and is currently being upskilled to become financially self-sufficient.

1000 Blankets

A few weeks before our Valley’s mountaintops were dusted with the first snowfall of 2021, Val de Vie Estate residents donated over 1000 blankets to Brickfields, a neighbouring community on the R45 road. The blankets were distributed by social workers from the Afrikaanse Christelike Vrouevereniging (ACVV) Paarl as part of their annual ‘Winter Hope’ project that supplies nutritional meals and warm clothes to the vulnerable. The warm blankets were a valuable addition, and we thank our residents and business owners for their kind contributions. ACVV Paarl offers various social work services to the Drakenstein community, including child protection, elderly care, special needs support and leadership training. “The outreach, in collaboration with so many different partners, underlines our organisation’s ethos to ‘be at service to the community, together.’ We are thankful for the donations, especially considering that the Brickfields community mostly consists of seasonal workers who have no income during the colder months,” says Agnetha Goetham, Auxiliary Social Worker at ACVV Paarl.

Creating a library of endless opportunities

Books are incredible tools for young minds to grow and develop, but not everyone has access to reading material. In celebration of Mandela Day, the Val de Vie Foundation collected and packed previously loved children’s books to donate to the community of Paarl-East. Val de Vie Estate residents donated over 600 books in a variety of fiction, non-fiction, educational and Encyclopaedias, which were handed over to Salt and Light, a non-profit organisation supporting children in early development centres and primary schools for the purpose of spiritual growth and discipleship. The books were donated to LK Zeeman Primary School in Paarl-East, opening a new world to young and curious minds.

“One of the sad realities today is that very few people, especially young people, read books. Unless we can find imaginative ways of addressing this reality, future generations are in danger of losing their history.” – Nelson Mandela

Hope for the youth

On 16 June 2021, the Val de Vie Foundation celebrated a cold and rainy Youth Day with thirty Val de Vie Estate residents. A tour to the Hope Through Action Foundation’s Franschhoek Valley Community Sport Centre enlightened residents to the range of programmes offered at the centre, including sport, leadership development, life skills, team development and skills training. One of the highlights of the day was a visit to the Indlovu design studio (featured on page 32). kye Fox is an unusual name. So it’s no surprise that the name bearer is an unusual girl. These days, most 13-year old girls spend their time on apps like Tik-Tok and Instagram, creating content that alludes to an inflated sense of self. Not Skye and her friend Kathryn la Grange. These girls set out to attend the Youth Day tour on 16 June, to Hope Through Action Foundation in Franschhoek and arrived with seven crates filled with sports equipment.

How did you collect the sports equipment?

We started ‘Do It Now Donations’ because we thought it was the perfect opportunity to involve our school and our community in helping collect sports equipment for Hope Through Action. We put posters on the Bridge House school walls and handed out flyers to every single pupil in the Senior Primary Grade. We also put bins in each class so that they had a place to put their donations. All pupils in the Senior Primary Grade supported our initiative, as did our relatives, friends and others who helped fund and collect equipment that could be useful to the centre.

Sports equipment donated by Bridge House pupils

Ryk Neethling, Imke Marais, Skye Fox, Kathryn la Grange and Jeff Spinks

Why did you choose this specific initiative?

Both of us thoroughly enjoy playing and participating in many sports. Sport can help you grow socially, and it extends teamwork abilities.

What are your hopes for the future?

This was our first time doing a charity event, and we will definitely be partaking in future ones. We hope that this drive will inspire others to donate to the Hope Through Action Foundation to give the community a chance to experience what it’s like to participate in sport. We want to thank the Val de Vie Estate residents who donated. We enjoyed our visit to the Hope Through Action Sports Centre in Franschhoek and would like to encourage more people to visit them. “Skye and Kathryn are impressive young people, and we are extremely grateful for the contribution they made. The equipment will be put to good use.” - Jeff Spinks, Hope Through Action. 24

inge-watching renovation shows during lockdown, inspired an existing homeowner to find a reasonably priced home in the estate in need of a new look. In The Village in Val de Vie Estate Phase One, he found one. Designed in a typical early 2000s-style with dark wood finishings and under-utilised space, but in an excellent location, the property was lovingly restored over the course of a year. It’s value increased nearly two-fold since. Here are some of his tips for investors looking to do the same: “First, decide on your reasons for investing in a Val de Vie Estate home in need of refurbishment. If you are going to live in the home, your lifestyle and requirements will determine the look and feel. If you are looking to capitalise on the rental demand and yield at an all-time high, you need to allow for heavy-duty usage. If your goal is to re-sell the property, do your research on who your target market is. In our case, it was families looking for completed homes on the estate, so one of our primary considerations was adding an additional bedroom. You need to create something unique that stands out from the other 1500 homes on the estate. We decided on screed floors and walls throughout instead of tiles which are found in most homes. Manage your budget carefully. If you decide to add a new room or feature, make sure it will unlock value. For example, the main bedroom and kitchen extension were our most significant expenses. Still, it has added tremendous value to the property, as these two living areas usually go hand-in-hand when re-selling. Use a reliable project manager. Val de Vie Construction assisted us with the entire process and saved us time and money. They are already familiar with vetted contractors and suppliers on the estate and understand how to manage a refurbishment project seamlessly.” 26

Kitchen

The entire kitchen was replaced with new cupboards, stove, basins and an island. A wall and window were knocked out to create a flow between the kitchen and the sunroom. The pantry was left untouched, except for the installation of a wooden sliding door.

The existing stainless-steel braai was replaced with a slow-burning combustion stove that warms up the entire ground floor. The ‘wasted space’ to the left of the stove is now cleverly used as storage for wood. In addition, the braai was moved into the sun room as a fire hearth that doubles up as a heat source during the winter months.

This section was the old patio which was enlarged, and a skylight was installed to let in additional light. The sliding doors disappear into cavities in the walls, entirely opening up the patio to the garden.

Main Bedroom and Bathroom

The current dressing room and bathroom used to be the main bedroom and its ensuite. The home’s top-level became the main bedroom, and one bedroom was moved downstairs, resulting in a 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom family home.

A final step to polishing up your garden and preparing for a scorching summer is to add a fresh layer of mulch to your beds. With both an aesthetic and functional purpose wood chips, finishing compost or straw will help the soil retain moisture and keep any unwanted weeds down. Working with nature rather than against it will make your gardening experience that much more fulfilling.

WELLNESS

Getting Fit for Life A NEW STUDY SHOWS THAT CURRENT LIFE EXPECTANCY COULD EXTEND TO 150 YEARS. WHILE WE CONTEMPLATE WHAT LIFE AT SUCH AN ADVANCED AGE COULD ENTAIL, WE SHOULD GET MOVING IF WE WANT TO LIVE LONGER. W ORDS BY DR LEDIVIA STRAUSS, REVITAHEALTH

I

f exercise could be packaged in a pill, we would be queuing up for prescriptions. The benefits of exercise for our physical, mental and emotional health are enormous. It helps us get fit, lose weight, and lower our risk for many diseases, including cancer. Our entire system gets a boost every time we increase our heart rate, releasing a gush of mood-regulating endorphins that simultaneously improve our brain health and neuroplasticity. The best part – we need only 11 minutes of exercise a day to increase longevity. In his book ‘The Longevity Diet’, Dr Valter Longo emphasises the role that regular exercise plays in the quest for a longer, healthier life. His research includes the choices made by centenarians living in ‘Blue Zones’ – the five places* on earth where people live their most extended, healthiest lives – and a common denominator that stands out is that they partake in daily physical activities. Fishing, dancing, walking in the olive groves or taking their sheep out to the fields are activities that keep these residents young. The ideal form of exercise or physical activity is the one you enjoy most and that is sustainable. Unfortunately, our daily routines can quickly be upended by the weather, commitments, lockdown regulations and the likes, preventing us from visiting the gym or getting outside to complete a run. ‘Exercise snacks’ is a new movement in the world of physical fitness and is a short, easy form of exercise that provides similar benefits as a longer workout.

36

GRAPEVINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

Perfect to integrate into our daily life, all it takes is a burst of action to get the blood flowing and the heart rate up. These can include anything from an outside walk, watering the garden, taking the stairs, making sourdough bread, and dancing to your favourite song. A balance needs to exist between rigorous sessions and more relaxing sessions because overtraining can be just as bad for your health as not training at all, worsening chronic inflammation or cause joint or muscle injuries. Humans are created to use various muscles simultaneously, but in today’s life, running, walking and climbing have been replaced with a sedentary lifestyle. However, we have so many options on Val de Vie Estate to keep fit and healthy, and if we don’t ‘feel like’ getting outside our going to the gym, we have our gardens to work in, our homes to tidy, and a collection of music on our devices to get us dancing. Our health often takes a back seat to our busy careers and plethora of responsibilities. Therefore, we need to prioritise health through highly nutritious food choices, getting enough good quality sleep, and doing regular exercise while considering that these lifestyle choices take time, planning, and dedication. But with the abundance of research confirming the benefits, you will reap health and wellness long into your golden years. *The geographic areas home to the world’s longest-living individuals are in Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California.

WELLNESS

The estate has over 21 kms of trails for you to run to your heart’s content

Guidelines to optimise exercise for longevity Walking at a fast pace for at least an hour a day. It can be split into two sessions of half an hour each. On the estate, we are blessed with beautiful paths that are safe to explore.

30

Move your body for thirty to forty minutes every other day and one to two hours over the weekend by running, bike riding or swimming. It would be best to move at a pace that causes you to sweat after ten minutes of starting. 150-300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week is optimal. Work on increasing your lean muscle mass. Muscle mass correlates with a decrease in chronic disease. It shows that as little as 60 minutes of resistance training each week leads to a reduction in mortality risk. Every muscle of the body needs to be used to grow and gain strength only in response to being challenged. Two sessions weekly are recommended.

Gentle exercise like yoga, Pilates and Barre are easy on the joints

How to get started Regardless of age or fitness level, there is a place to start for everyone. If you have a history of heart disease or any medical condition, always check with your medical provider before starting or changing anything to your exercise routine. Start slow and gradually increase your tempo and effort. If you are new to exercising, start with a 10–20-minute walk three times a week. Gradually add 5 minutes at a time and add another day every other week until you reach at least 150 minutes per week. Do not be afraid of exercise or going to the gym. Remember that everyone was a beginner at a point, and refrain from comparing your journey with someone else. Add exercise to your daily routine and mark it in your calendar as an appointment and not something you might get to if you have time left. Remember to diversify by doing cardio as well as resistance training. Experiment with different forms of exercise until you find a routine that suits you and your health goals best. 37

The King of Crime Fiction OUR RESIDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND AN EVENING INSIDE THE MIND OF INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED, PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR DEON MEYER. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

In partnership with Stellenbosch University, Deon Meyer and Jonathan Amid presented an insightful evening to our residents

A

few weeks after Deon Meyer was Knighted in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Government, he is seated in the Val de Vie Estate ballroom, interviewed about what this honour means to him. “I grew up in a community on the poorer side of the spectrum. So for something like this to happen to me is almost unbelievable. But I’ve always resonated with the French culture, their lifestyle and their language. From the early days, my books fared much better in France than in other countries.” Jonathan Amid, renowned South African book critic and editor, facilitated the evening and conversed with Deon, touching on his writing methodology, rubbing shoulders with the world’s most esteemed crime writers and sources of inspiration for successfully trying his hand at not only crime novels but also screenplays. Generally very private, Deon opened up about details of his early life, his wife Marianne and his deep love for his first grandson Matteo. Regarded as the most popular writer in Afrikaans, Deon has published fifteen novels and three short stories in more than 20 languages. Some of the characters from his books have crept into the hearts of South African readers, in particular, largerthan-life Bennie Griesel. When asked why he thinks Bennie is so popular, Deon replies: “I have no idea. I try to create relatable characters, each with their own struggles. Characters in conflict with themselves create immense suspense.”

Donkerdrif is Deon’s latest pulse-pounding thriller in which his much-loved characters Bennie Griesel and Vaughn Cupido are led into the dark side of Stellenbosch. Here they are faced with missing persons, corruption within their special investigation unit, murder, and personal challenges. Later in the evening, during a Q & A session, residents probed Deon about what the future holds for Bennie and Vaughn.“I mentally consult with these characters when I read the news and find myself thinking ‘what would they do in these situations?’ I have some more adventures for them in-store, but you never know when a fatal stray bullet might hit either.” The suspense continues, thank you Deon.

Egyptian geese are regarded as some of nature’s best parents

T

he bright plumage of the Cape weaver is an unmissable streak of golden yellow against the blue spring skies. Using its construction skills to court up to seven females at a time, this polygynous bird darts from one nest to the next, spending up to a week to complete one. Intricate, waterproof structures, meticulously threaded using up to a thousand strands of grass per nest, are ripped to shreds by the masterbuilder himself if it does not meet the lofty standards of the females. It sometimes requires rebuilding the

conspicuous eye markings and were considered sacred by the Egyptians. They stick to family groups during the year, and when breeding season arrives, potential mates are attracted by the male’s honking and feather display. Both the male and female take turns to brood and raise their young. Although non-migratory, they breed year-round, but you will see more of them during the warmer months when the mothers show their goslings around the estate’s natural water resources.

nest up to a dozen times before the female gives her nod of approval and shows her willingness to mate, lining the nest with soft grass and feathers. Between two and five eggs hatch after a two-week incubation period, and the nest is empty again less than three weeks later. The male has no input in raising the young. On the contrary, Egyptian geese form more permanent bonds with their young and have monogamous partners. More closely related to a duck than a goose, they have 43

The Cape clawless otter’s breeding season is in December, following a gestation period of two months

Charismatic Cape clawless otters raise their pups until they are about one year old or until the mother is ready to give birth to another litter. Otters belong to closely knit, complex family structures in which females are accompanied by their young. These groups, or clans, have between five to six members that regularly split up and then merge again to hunt crabs, scent-mark, bark, squeak and play in the water. Crepuscular creatures, otters are usually active during dawn and dusk. They are very shy animals and spotting them outside of their aquatic environment is rare, as it happens typically only at night. Other families that operate in the dark are subterranean rodents like golden moles, who raise their young in little suburban underground ‘towns’. Here, socialising takes place, and afterwards, each adult returns to its tunnel system. Mating occurs between the only alpha male and female, and as a unit, they raise their young. Their litter usually consists of two tiny hairless pups that the mother suckles until they are mature. Golden moles are blind and deaf and rely on their sense of smell to find earthworms and insects, of which there is an overload in springtime.

44

GRAPEVINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

Insects mostly have no parenting instinct, except for bees and wasps that belong to structured family units and receive uniparental care. One of the most unlikely insect parents is cockroaches, who set their cannibalistic tendencies aside and produce a milk-like substance to feed the young nymphs they carry around until they are ready to be born. Snails opt for single parenting, and mothers keep a close eye on their larvae up until they are about three months of age. Moving at only 1.3 centimetres per second, they often do not make it to adulthood and fall prey to lizards, frogs, birds, and small antelope like the Cape grysbok.

Active at night and endemic to the fynbos biome, the Cape grysbok carries a lamb for seven months and can reproduce up to two lambs per year under ideal conditions. Although they are a common species, they are rarely seen and are extremely shy of humans. The male and female grysbok are partners for life, although the father plays no role in raising the young. The mother is left to her own devices to protect her lamb against predators such as caracal. Notoriously cunning and secretive, caracals are born survivors. Unmistakable when spotted with their light reddish-brown coat and characteristically tuft ears, they are solitary and territorial. Like smaller cats, caracal can purr, something larger cats besides cheetah cannot do. During the warmer months, they conserve energy and water by moving in the cool of night, making unexpected appearances on the boundary cameras of the estate from time to time. Our thermal cameras have captured a mother caracal and her teenager as they peer through the fence into the estate, visible for only a few seconds before disappearing into the black of night.

UPDATE ON OUR B ARN OW L FAMILY A pair of barn owl found the perfect spot to raise their chicks under the roof of a home in Val de Vie Estate. The kind homeowners did not want the owls to be removed, a decision that has been in the very best interest of the owls. Barn owls breed any time of the year, but peak in spring. The owl hen lays an egg per day, resulting in owlets of varying ages to ensure that the strongest survive. Both parents care for the youngsters and tend to choose the same nesting space year on year.

A Twist in Tradition GROWING UP ON A FARM IN ZIMBABWE IGNITED IN EDMORE RUZOZA A PASSION FOR COOKING WITH HOMEGROWN INGREDIENTS. THE WELLNESS FARM ON VAL DE VIE ESTATE HAS REKINDLED THIS FLAME. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

D

onning a fedora instead of a traditional chef’s hat is Edmore Ruzoza’s way of showing that he is no traditional chef. From a young age, his mother encouraged his interest in cooking and the flair and innovation of his dishes speak of his encouragement. Life on a farm 300 kilometres south of Harare did not include watching cooking shows on TV or having access to the internet for inspiration. “Everything I learnt about cooking was from watching my mother lovingly prepare our food. My understanding of flavour was because she taught me to respect the ingredients”, he recounts.

Meals in the Ruzoza household encapsulated wholesomeness and quality time around an open fire. The unifying power of food and family was instilled in a young Edmore, and he has always included this sense of ‘belonging’ in the dishes he creates. His innovative approach has taken him from fast-paced airline lounges to creating culinary experiences in Abu Dhabi. Locally he has worked in Johannesburg, Jeffrey’s Bay and the Cape Winelands. 48

“No matter where in the world I am cooking, I see my kitchen team as my second family. I involve them in the entire process of creating a menu, from understanding the raw essence of ingredients to the final plating and presentation”, he says. Since taking over the kitchen at The Valley Restaurant, Edmore has focused on including this sense of ‘family’ in his culinary offerings, while using only the freshest ingredients. Having access to the luscious crops of the Val de Vie Wellness Farm in partnership with Cape.Earth takes Edmore back to his childhood. “It’s like being a little boy again, walking around in nature and choosing fresh ingredients to take home to my mother to cook with.” Only now he does it proudly wearing his well-earned chef’s jacket and a quirky fedora.

The game of Padel tennis is evolving daily and continues to attract players of all ages

A Calculated Shot SINCE VAL DE VIE ESTATE OPENED THE FIRST PADEL TENNIS COURT IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 2019,THIS ENERGISING SPORT HAS BECOME INCREDIBLY POPULAR. COMBINING THE PRINCIPLES OF TENNIS AND SQUASH, IT’S EASY TO PLAY, FUN AND SOCIABLE. WORDS B Y THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

P

adel tennis was invented in 1969 in Acapulco when Enrique Corcuera decided to adapt his squash routine. He felt the existing court in his backyard needed more walls, a tennis net and a new set of rules.

The game soon became a social phenomenon in South America, more specifically in Argentina and today is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Played by over 30 million players in 60 countries across five continents, there are more than 40 000 courts in the world, and the numbers keep increasing. Padel tennis on Val de Vie Estate has inspired a community to step outside of their comfort zone and master the skill and action this racquet sport requires. The Val de Vie Estate Padel Committee was established soon after the court opened on the estate

in 2019 and is recognised by the South African Padel Association (SAPA). On Mondays, club members play a round of four games from 15h00 to18h00, where all ages and sport levels are welcome. League Thursdays are from 15h00 to18h00, where players have been ranked and fall into two different leagues that play every alternate Thursday. Beginner Saturdays are from 08h00 to18h00, and here the more experienced players take time to run through the basic rules and techniques of Padel with those trying it out for the first time. In South Africa, there are currently six Padel courts based at Val de Vie Estate, Century City, Camps Bay and

An additional twelve courts are planned for the Western Cape in the next year and 28 others for the rest of the country. This growth represents nearly a 1000 percent increase in the number of courts and new players in a single year. Padel tennis is played by all ages and requires only a modest level of fitness. Strength is not a fundamental skill necessary to win the game; it is a strategic game based on well-placed shots, making it an ideal sport for all ages and abilities. Games are played in singles or doubles on a court, which is roughly 25 percent smaller than the size of a tennis court and is fenced and walled. Scoring is done in the same way as in a game of standard tennis. The main differences are that the court has walls, and the balls can be played off them similarly as in the game of squash. Balls are slightly less pressurised than tennis balls, and bats are solid and stringless. The height of the ball served must be at or below the waist level. Residents interested in playing Padel can contact Ashley on 076 051 7242 or Errard on 082 450 9161.

A FE W FU N GLOB A L FA C TS :

• Every year, around 900 000 Padel rackets are sold compared to 400 000 tennis rackets; • In 2014, Padel became the second most played sport in Spain, behind football, and this trend has continued in other counties; • 9 percent of the global population plays Padel.

A Future Guaranteed A NATION’S MOST PRIZED POSSESSION IS ITS CHILDREN. THAT HAS BEEN THE RALLYING CRY FOR OVER 160 YEARS AT PAARL GIMNASIUM. TEACHERS ARE SELECTED BECAUSE OF THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE PROFESSION BUT EDUCATION AT THIS PROUDLY AFRIKAANS SCHOOL IS ALSO ABOUT THE BALANCE BETWEEN ACADEMICS, SPORT AND GOOD CITIZENSHIP. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

O

n a beautiful Boland day, headmaster Eddie Bateman stands outside the entrance of Paarl Gim, explaining that the school is the only one in Paarl that houses its sporting grounds on the same premises as its classrooms. Not to be mistaken as a ‘sport only’ school, but a well-rounded bastion of history, excellence and inclusion, it’s hard imagining Paarl without Paarl Gim.

Paarl schools are some of the most popular in our country. What would you reckon are some of the reasons?

We all have a need to belong. Our parents and grandparents found this belonging in political parties and church congregations, but these community lines have become blurred as we encounter many societal changes and challenges. The children of today feel at home at school. It has become the new version of a community. When this ‘community’ is based in the platteland, feeding off a healthy macro environment of parents, teachers and peers, a school excels on all levels. There are no bad schools in Paarl, in my opinion. Just look at the matric results; our schools perform year-on-year. Throughout my career I was based at schools in Gauteng and can attest that platteland-based schools hold an ‘x-factor’ that you don’t find everywhere.

What sets Paarl Gim apart from other Paarl schools?

In terms of the previous model-C schools, we are the only school in Paarl with girls and boys combined. For us, family is very important, so incorporating the family unit at school is part of how we help parents; by giving an education to siblings in a shared environment. I believe a good school is one where children are happy, and we are very fortunate that most of the children here are very happy to be here.

What is the relation between Paarl Gim and Klein Gim? 52

GRAPEVINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

We share the same ethos, uniform and school anthem. We use each other’s facilities, and we have a good understanding. But we are two separate schools. Because there is such a high demand for placements in Paarl schools, entry into the high school based on primary school merits, is not guaranteed.

The sport achievements of Paarl Gim is outstanding. If my child is not sporty, is Paarl Gim still a good choice?

Absolutely. We have children in arts and music that have achieved the highest accolades on international levels. One of our Gr.9’s is currently in the top 5 for debate in our country. There is an annual competition that allows high school learners to go to NASA in the USA. Each year, only two pupils from South Africa are selected. Since inception of this competition, we have had one candidate every year visiting NASA, and for the past three years, both entries were filled by Paarl Gim pupils. We have also developed leaders who today lead in our communities; Paarl’s current junior major is a former Paarl Gim student, and so are the leaders in some of our national sports teams. Sport gets a lot of media traction, and very often this creates the perception of a ‘sport school’. Paarl Gim is not a sport school. We are an academic school that excels in sport and culture, because we are blessed to have incredibly talented pupils attend our school.

What does the future of school look like in a Covid-19 world?

There are many challenges. But what we’ve learnt over the past 18 months is that our children must be kept busy. At our school there is a fast tempo where things happen all the time and our children are used to this pace, as it prepares them for real life. Covid-19 lockdowns and regulations have placed many restrictions on us, but we carry on as far as we are allowed.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E

What is the application process to get into Paarl Gim? On our website are applications forms that can be downloaded. We don’t work on a first-come-firstserved principle but rather on a process where points are awarded for each potential candidate based on their history, achievements etc.

Mr Eddie Bateman has been Paarl Gim’s headmaster for the past nine years

Would Paarl Gim in future invest in a transport solution to and from Val de Vie Estate?

A solution for Val de Vie Estate parents is currently under discussion as we understand that it is a challenge to drive from the estate to school multiple times a day. The demand from Val de Vie Estate for placement in Paarl Gim just keeps increasing, and we want to offer these parents convenience.

What are the future initiatives planned for Paarl Gim?

We regularly assess our offering of subjects and weigh up the inclusion of a new subject over an existing one. To bring in a new subject, you need to drop one other subject, so it’s not as easy to do. We somehow managed to incorporate Economics without dropping any of our other subjects, and we were grateful for this to fall into our lap. Our children are incredibly busy with existing extracurricular activities. Especially during Covid-19, we want to stick to what is familiar and established.

Your message to parents looking to invest in their child’s future? A school should be representative of the world and we believe that Paarl Gim has been successful in this endeavour. All levels of society should be portrayed at school so that fortunate children appreciate what they have and the ones who don’t have, aspire to more. We are a leading school in our country because of the top talent we attract, and by the abundant grace of our Heavenly Father.

PAARL IS KNOWN FOR ITS CLUSTER OF EXCELLENT SCHOOLS. THIS EDUCATION HUB IS A MAGNET FOR PARENTS WANTING THE VERY BEST FOR THEIR CHILDREN. AND BY MAKING VAL DE VIE ESTATE THEIR HOME, PARENTS HAVE ACCESS TO TOP-QUALITY EDUCATION.

Tickled Pink THE PRETTIEST SALON IN ALL OF SOUTH AFRICA IS CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY - ONE TREATMENT AT A TIME. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM 56

GRAPEVINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

S

tepping into HeyDay feels like you’ve put on a pair of rose-tinted glasses. Literally everything is candyfloss pink. From floor to ceiling, the furniture, washing basins and tea trays are all in pantones of pink. This all-in-one beauty spot, opened in April 2021, has a nail bar, hair salon and clinic that offers just about every treatment required to look your best. But it’s not limited to traditional, pick-me-up salon treatments, this ‘Instagrammable’ salon brings cosmetic enhancements to the Winelands, on a whole new level.

Dr Willem Erasmus is one of Cape Town’s most esteemed plastic surgeons

Administered by a plastic surgeon, cosmetic microtreatments do not noticeably change your face, but subtly turns back the clock. A topic burdened with stigma and often mistaken for full-blown plastic surgery procedures, Heyday aims to broaden our aesthetic beauty boundaries with the help of Dr Willem Erasmus. “With a delicate touch, micro-treatments simply mimic the effects of a good night’s sleep,” says Dr Willem. “Injectable formulas are far gentler these days and offer a no-downtime component to your skin care regime. The aim is not a fake look, but a subtle change that leaves you feeling confident in your own skin.” Botox and fillers often get a bad rap because of ‘over done’ examples on the internet. Type in ‘before and after plastic surgery’ on a search engine and you are bombarded with images of the rich and famous that have entirely reconstructed their appearance and in most cases, not for the better. Non-surgical in nature, microtreatments are less invasive, safer, often temporary and pose less risks for complications.

Dr Willem first consults and decide with his patients on the most appropriate procedures for natural-looking results. Conveniently based at HeyDay every second week, he is able to administer most treatments at the HeyDay clinic, and more advanced procedures are done from his rooms in Cape Town. Tone up for the warmer months ahead and enhance your natural beauty. You’ll feel confident enough to snap that selfie and share the ‘heyday’ version of yourself. n the world of horse racing, Winx is a magnificent bay mare known for her unique beauty and breath-taking demeanour. These are two of the characteristics women can expect from the Wynx & Co boutique located at The Yard Offices. Drawing from horsemanship values of trust and attention to detail, Wynx & Co garments are made from quality materials and inspired by a neutral aesthetic. With over a decade of experience in the fashion industry, Danielle Vermaak’s understanding of fabric, fit and design led to the launch of Wynx & Co. “My love for horses was ignited at a young age with show jumping and dressage. My everyday outfits range from jodhpurs and riding boots to fashion shoot sets with hair and make-up. Wynx & Co is where these two spheres of my life overlap,” shares Danielle, fashion model and founder of the equestrianinspired clothing brand. If shopping for a special occasion leaves you with a single outfit that gathers dust after being

worn once, fret no more. The days of ‘one outfit wonder’ are old news with Wynx & Co’s functional everyday garments that transform into elegant evening gems. Mother to 10-month old Jean-Luc, Danielle swapped her city heels for countryside charm on Val de Vie Estate without compromising on style. “With only a few moments to throw an outfit together in the mornings, I wanted the items available at Wynx & Co to have a naturally sophisticated and effortless style. Every piece can be dressed up or down to match your taste.” Clear a few shelves in your wardrobe for investment items from Wynx & Co’s Spring Collection. Coats, blouses, boots, jackets and dresses take you from crisp spring mornings to warm summer sunsets. While the colour palette stays true to Wynx & Co’s earthy tones, fresh pastels, colourful satin scarves and soft suede pantones are combined to make your outfits stand out.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Q&A WITH REZA FERREIRA OPTOMETRIST Tell us a little about yourself.

I studied at RAU and graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry degree in 1990. I’m married to Marnus, who has been working side by side with me, and I’m blessed with two beautiful children, Igna and Marizelle. My family keeps me grounded and real. I did postgraduate courses in ocular disease and pharmaceutical application (CAS) and a course at the Stark Griffin Dyslexia Academy, enabling me to do dyslexia determining tests for children with learning disabilities. What do you like most about being an optometrist?

I absolutely love my job! I enjoy the interaction with patients and I relish the challenge of coming up with the best possible script with the best possible outcome. I’m like Hannibal from The A-Team – I love it when a plan comes together! What makes a good optometrist?

I believe that you have to build a personal relationship with your patients. I take pride in carrying out personalised exams. Doing a thorough history check, which involves looking at the person’s age and day-to-day realities, enables me to determine their needs and match them with the correct design, whether they need multifocals, digital office lenses, reading glasses, accommodative anti-fatigue lenses, prescription sunglasses or glasses for golf, cycling or other outdoor activities.

IMAGES: ISTOCKPHOTO

Why are you an independent practitioner?

Tel: 021 863 1204 021 863 1056 www.reza.co.za

Independent optometry guarantees personal attention. Close and trusted relationships built over 20 years with international suppliers ensure reputable, superior products with after-sales service and support.

What do I need to consider if my child needs glasses?

Looking cool and feeling confident is vital for your child. The other important factor is comfort. Younger children require durable glasses. Most children spend a significant amount of time looking at digital screens such as TVs, computers, tablets and smartphones. This puts a lot of strain on their visual systems and exposes them to an excessive amount of blue light. Breakthrough technology brings innovative products to our doorstep to combat these problems. Can anybody wear contact lenses?

Most people can wear them. However, people struggling with dry eye syndrome or severe seasonal allergies have more difficulty adapting to contact lenses. It may not be ideal for people using their computers for 8 to 12 hours a day to wear contact lenses full-time. I do a free trial fitting to establish whether or not the patient is compatible with contact lenses. What other services do you provide?

We have an on-site laboratory that enables us to cut and fit lenses. With this service we can reuse a patient’s existing frames, which means they don’t have the inconvenience of going without their spectacles. We also do adjustments and repairs. Rapid-fire questions:

Bush or coastline? Bush – sitting

around a fire in Klaserie.

Tea or coffee? Hmm, wine please! Favourite holiday destination?

Travelling the Italian countryside. And a close second is Still Bay! Favourite pastimes? Gardening, cooking for my family and watching Netflix. Favourite food? Braaivleis.

nspired by polo and themed with plantation-style décor, The Polo Pavillion by Back’s will offer guests an authentic yet refined dining experience. In partnership with Val de Vie Estate, Back’s has carefully curated a restaurant concept that combines heritage and cuisine with the adventure of polo. The interior restoration of The Polo Pavilion by Back’s is a fresh approach of neutral palettes, indoor palms and accents of rich brown leather. Soft chalky white walls and dark-stained wood create tonal variation, softened with botanical print textiles. Rattan ceiling fans allow cool air to circulate the dining area and accentuate the natural fibres of sisal and upholstered teak furniture. The space is uncluttered, light and airy with touches of equestrian elements. In the summertime, enjoy a high tea or stylish lunch while keeping an eye on the polo ponies galloping past. A conservatory-style addition to the terrace is a glass enclosure that allows for year-round lazy Sunday brunches and candle-lit dinners. Inside, the lounge area around the fireplace is the perfect cosy spot to enjoy a glass of fine South African wine on a cold winter’s evening. The dining area is a nod to heritage and old-world opulence that transports guests to a bygone era.

To jump or not to jump? How is that even a question. I am the newest member at the Riding School and jumping is my life. I am balanced and able to keep the pace. If you are a brave rider and not scared of heights, I am your girl. I am adventurous and very curious.

I absolutely adore people, especially when they give me a pat and a treat. Sometimes on outrides the humans say I am ‘scared of my own shadow’. I have no idea what that means, only that I am attentive to my environment because I want to protect my riders.

My family has a bit of Arab blood in them so I can often look like a dancing pony, this is just natural for me. I promise to take care of you every step of the way you don’t and have to worry one bit. I used to be a polo pony and have a very comfortable trot and canter. 71

oving our offices to Val de Vie Estate early in 2021 has made a considerable impact on our business,” remarks Group Franchise Director Justin Horne. “When buying a new or used car, people want convenience and excellent customer service, which is exactly what we offer.”

The MyRide Group specialises in finding the right vehicle for their clients across their established pre-owned dealerships as well as franchise businesses located in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

maintenance plans are all available. Driving around The Yard, residents have likely seen some of the MyRide Bespoke Vehicles on display. “Our Bespoke Range consists of a range of hand-selected vehicles that you won’t find anywhere else,” explains Sales Executive and Buyer Brandon Wilson. “Whether you want to buy a new car, a pre-owned vehicle or sell your existing car, give us a call.”

New vehicle brands represented by the group include Nissan, Renault, Isuzu, Ford, Hyundai and JAC. “While we can assist on procuring most vehicle brands, we place our focus on the brands that we know best,” says Justin. With decades of experience in the motor industry, the MyRide Group can assist and offer advice on anything motor vehicle-related.

Expansion plans include the opening of MyRide PreOwned in Paarl in September 2021, located in 32 Jan van Riebeeck Road that will also house MyRide Commercial. TATA and Daewoo commercial vehicles will be sold while any brand of medium, heavy and extra-heavy commercial vehicles will be serviced additionally. On the cards for April 2022 is a new MyRide branch opening in Paarl Junction. “Our long-term strategy is to expand our product range and brand presence, a strategy that we believe will greatly benefit Val de Vie Estate residents.

Whether you want to buy a new car or sell your existing one, the team will expertly guide you towards the best solution. Comprehensive service offerings such as finance and value-added products that include warranties and

We invite residents to make contact with us via email on hello@myride.co.za or on Whatsapp (083 227 0355) - or pop in for a coffee to our office - to tell us more about their vehicle needs. We might just have the perfect solution.”

EXCLUSIVE MANDATE

SECURITY

Your Peace of Mind is our Priority VAL DE VIE ESTATE’S SECURE FAMILY LIFESTYLE HAS LONG BEEN AN ATTRACTION FOR RESIDENTS. OUR PROFESSIONAL SECURITY TEAM IS CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR – AND IMPLEMENTING – VARIOUS STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE RESIDENTS’ SAFETY AND SECURITY EXPERIENCE. WORDS BY LOUIS DE

JAGER, SECURITY AND RISK MANAGER

E

specially in these fraught times, the reassurance that our loved ones are safe wherever they may live, work or play in our beautiful environment cannot be understated. Our security team has recently implemented updates to ensure residents’ safety while maintaining the utmost respect for privacy and personal liberties. These are just some of the ways that we’re working hard to keep Val de Vie Estate secure and serene.

Eyes on the ground in CCTV camera upgrade

The estate has recently invested in additional expert CCTV security cameras in strategic locations throughout the estate. The new CCTV technology has been carefully installed to maintain respect for our residents’ privacy and fully comply with the protection of personal information laws. Following the upgrade, the estate now relies on both static as well as Pan, Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) cameras. The PTZ cameras also use infrared sensing and detection technology. It was this CCTV footage which proved crucial for the successful conclusion of some isolated break-ins at Pearl Valley. The CCTV footage allowed our team to identify and track the movements of the suspects through the estate - the perpetrators were identified as minor children residing on the estate with their families. We are relieved to bring this unsettling period to a welcome end. 86

GRAPEVINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

The ‘ride’ choice for better boundary and backend road patrols

Our security team’s patrols has also been bolstered by a new e-cycle. This will be used to patrol the boundaries and back-end roads of the estate where standard vehicles can’t drive. With this additional capacity, our team can now monitor routes which could previously have served as getaway paths for culprits of mischief and crime. We can also monitor running paths, horse bridle paths and cycling paths at all times, giving residents an extra layer of protection as they embrace the freedoms that Val de Vie Estate provides.

Uniform safety and peace of mind

Another ‘softer’ security intervention has been the introduction of a new uniform for our tactical security team. We have always had a uniform to ensure the visibility and easy identification of the team, and we hope this new version will continue to facilitate identification while also being easier on the eyes. Going forward, we will continue to maintain our worldclass security systems to provide the best protection to our residents. Residents are welcome to contact us at any time with feedback or for assistance on 021 867 1201.
