T HE E D I TOR

In his latest documentary – A life on our Planet – Sir David Attenborough pleads with humankind to change our ways. To bring back stability on our planet and give nature a fighting chance, we need to restore biodiversity. All life forms depend on it, humans the most. The balanced ecosystem that exists on Val de Vie Estate celebrates the rich and wonderful world that we get to call home. Hectares of protected fynbos, a grazing camp, lakes, vineyards, green corridors and one of the Cape’s biggest rivers provide a sanctuary for wildlife and biodiversity in abudance. Our dedicated environmental team

I THINK I SPOOK TOO SOON

Environmentalists are of the opinion that there is still a chance for us to make amends with our closest ally. That it’s not too late to save our planet. But to do so, we need to rediscover how to live sustainably and in harmony with nature. May 2020 forever linger in our minds as proof that continuous neglect of the natural world can lead to irreversible outcomes. We’ve made a few subtle changes to the Grapevine and in this edition highlight how perfectly and uniquely created every living being on our estate is, us humans included.

Setting the Standard In business, it’s always a challenge to stay on top, especially in difficult circumstances. Our committed team has throughout this year continuously found ways to improve, and it has certainly paid off. WORDS BY M ARTIN VENTER , VAL DE VIE ESTATE CEO AND FOUNDER

R

eceiving recognition at the 2020/2021 International Property Awards as both the Best Leisure Development (for Val de Vie Evergreen) and Best Residential Development in South Africa, is a great honour for our estate. It is also a fitting testament to the development and management companys’ continuous efforts of incrementally increasing the offering and capital growth of South Africa’s number one residential estate.

What started as a vision to build a polo estate, has evolved over the past 13 years to one of the most diverse residential estates in the world. I have extensively travelled the world and visited many esteemed residential estates but have yet to find one as varied in its offering as Val de Vie Estate. Dynamic and flexible to the demands of investors, the estate has successfully adapted to everchanging industry trends. A defining moment for the estate was in 2008 during the global financial credit crunch, which resulted in a renewed focus on offering luxury primary residences and family focused amenities. In late 2018 the estate rebranded to a wellness estate, encompassing six pillars of the Val de Vie Estate lifestyle, namely physical, social,

environmental, community and mental/emotional/ spiritual wellness. When the pandemic hit and the world was issued with ‘stay-at-home’ orders, we were in exactly the right place to capitalise on the rapidly changing landscape, and for what lies ahead in a post Covid-19 world. Our excellent location of only 40 minutes from Cape Town, world class security, wellness facilities, wide open spaces and fresh Boland air are some of the reasons why a record amount of families decided in the months of lockdown, that life on Val de Vie Estate looked like a safe place to be. Why do we think we keep on winning accolades, 13 years after launching Val de Vie Estate? Because our offering is authentic. And because all of our estate facilities allow for creating community. In the past six months we’ve added a bike park, two delis, a wellness farm, a nursery, the expansion of the Pearl Valley hotel by Mantis, phase two of Val de Vie Evergreen, a rugby field, a cricket academy, a soccer academy, new tennis courts and a basketball court. Our commitment to preserving and uplifting this beautiful part of the world that is our home, is unrivalled by any other residential estate in Africa and recognised by the judges of the International Property Awards.

T

he luxury property market is one of few industries showing an upward curve during uncertain economic times. Val de Vie Properties’ record-breaking figures indicate that South Africans gave serious consideration to their place of residence during months of lockdown, placing safety as top priority Our September and October sales reached 96 percent of full asking price. The majority of these was concluded by Capetonians – city dwellers and southern suburbians to be exact – showing a semigration trend we have not witnessed before. Homes with rooms that can be converted to private studies and office spaces are very popular and align with the current work-from-home trend.

‘The morning rush’ is no longer part of our vocabulary as congested roads, 8 am-sharp inperson meetings and after-hour teambuilding exercises have become a thing of the past. Leisurely strolls to grab a cuppa from one of the estate’s coffees shops before heading to either your home office or office space on the estate, are now the status quo. The Yard Offices sold out within three months of its launch date, testament to our residents embracing the corporate world’s ‘new normal’. A great demand for family homes in the R5 million – R6 million category confirms our reasoning for the introduction of a selection of a new category of Bespoke Homes in the Le Domaine and La Vue neighbourhoods, priced from R5.6 million.

Peace of mind is priceless

Residents reconnect with nature by stepping outside into their backyard - all 1000 hectares of it

We believe these Bespoke Homes, built by Val de Vie Construction, will pique the interest of investors and first-time home buyers with their attractive price point. Medium to long-term rentals are flourising, due to more and more families opting for Val de Vie Estate as their permanent residence. Short term rentals have increased, specifically for the upcoming festive season and we anticipate the Cape Winelands to be a popular destination for South Africans to visit during their annual December holiday. Val de Vie Evergreen’s offering of completed homes in Phase 2A of the development is proving to be a recipe for success. Retirees prefer to move in immediately and not have to find alternative accommodation while their retirement home is under construction. Selling our 100th Val de Vie Evergreen unit is confirmation of our belief that all generations want to feel safe in their choice of residence. Phase 2B is set to launch early in 2021. Consolidation of a number of stands on The Acres means three new Gentleman’s Estates are available for purchase, each about a hectare in size. Val de Vie Properties’ golf campaign in partnership with the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, is particularly popular amongst The Acres sales. GOLF

I

t has been a real pleasure to see just how busy the golf course has been over the past few months. Golf opened its doors to players in June and since then, each month, we have seen over 2000 rounds of golf recorded (our yearly average is about 34 000 rounds). Member rounds are up, as a result, member guests numbers spiked, and it was great to see various groups play throughout the week. The Tuesday and Thursday morning clubs have been great platforms for new players to integrate into the club and the support from our members and residents on the estate has been remarkable. Our operations team was kept strategically small over Level One lockdown, right up to time when we needed to get our entire course hollow tined in seven days. Our team of 31 aerated 45 hectares, raked up all cores and presented a playable golf course when we opened on the 8th of October. The condition of the current course is excellent and highlights the calibre of the Golf Data team headed by Mike Westman. We have increased the size of our restaurant and bar team to meet higher service demands for the season. The bar and signature lounge terrace areas, which have been spruced up for the season but flagged for renovation next year, are high priority areas. Together with the Golf Committee and HOA Trustees, we will be creating the ultimate bar and member lounge space. Our Pearl Valley Academy is doing a great job in growing the game of golf. James Wade and Adrian Buchner have made their mark as great coaches and team builders in the lady’s clinics, master classes, junior programmes, outreach programmes and one-on-one lessons. Our approach to golf is holistic on the estate and we are fortunate to have the space and the facilities to expand our offering. We promote the use of TPI, whether it be with Corne Steenkamp or Marlene Botha, and members see tangible improvements to their game. Adrian Buchner and Rob Hoekstra have 17

put their hearts and talents into junior golfers who are now starting to do well in the Boland Golf Events. Next year we want to see the addition of an indoor fitment studio. Traditionally held in winter, our bigger golfing events will now be hosted through the summer. The club will be busy through November and for the first time, host several events through January, February and March 2021. The events coincide with the opening of the second phase of our Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis in November.

We can now offer 64 single rooms and 7 double rooms, while the upgraded breakfast room and pool area offer guests a more leisurely experience. By the time of going to print, a brand new Deli will be open in the previous breakfast room in phase one of the hotel, operated by Back’s. With international travel plans on ice, South Africans will be taking full advantage of exploring the Winelands in December and January. It’s the perfect opportunity for us to welcome them to a first-class golfing destination.

This festive season, South Africans will be swapping ski holidays for sunny golf days

hile we tackled the pandemic in 2020, nature seemed to hold out an olive branch. The Western Cape’s exceptionally wet winter and spring ensured that most of the supply dams are either full or nearly full. By the end of September, the estate had received more rainfall than the previous four years and it is expected that we will be in for a bit more rain before summer arrives. With the warmer weather and the gradual relaxation of strict Covid-19 restrictions, estate life is slowly returning to normal. We saw a steady increase in activity at the sport and recreational facilities with the multipurpose court at The Yard used regularly

for soccer and netball matches. By the time that this edition is published, the new Bike Park will be open, with riding clinics for all ages and skill levels hosted regularly. This new outdoor facility provides a pump track, a flow trail and a skills trail, all in one area. Judging by the enthusiastic reaction to the facility, we have an all-round winner. During the building phase, the team from Trailblazers was constantly approached by enthusiastic nippers wanting to know when they could ride on the “bumps”. In addition, we were able to upgrade and extend the existing trails by 3.5km. Val de Vie Estate now has an unbelievable bike park

It’s a great place to experience our best season outdoors, with the multitude of activities, sports and leisure facilities. In the heat of the day, a grey squirrel is on high alert and emits a whistle-like call upon spotting a mass of slithering scales. The slow-moving puff adder much prefers deep bush and cover, avoiding the noise and rumble of bikes and runners. The Cape cobra is alert and focused on a faster and more formidable predator, the small grey mongoose*. The mongoose is unsuccessful in catching a snake and makes its way to its burrow near the Berg river to cool off, where it passes a duiker. This omnivore - one of two antelope that eats meat and the only one that actively hunts for its food - does a zigzag run on the riverbanks, maneuvering between foraging guineafowl and lolloping hares. The end of the day is in sight, the temperature drops, and the light starts to dwindle. A pair of spotted eagle owl appear from inside their boxes, the onsetting darkness no barrier to their laser-sharp night vision. Answering to each other’s hoot, the duo proclaims their territory.

WELLNESS

A Natural Connection 40 hectares of fynbos links the Groot Drakenstein mountain and the Berg River, facilitating movement of wildlife while rehabilitating critical biodiversity, and offers our residents a space to reconnect with nature. WOR DS BY THE GR AP EVINE TEAM

O

ne of the greatest threats to natural eco systems is fragmented habitats. Biodiversity corridors ensures that the natural flow of mammals, insects and birds is unhindered while native vegetation is conserved. Simon Allen, environmental officer of Val de Vie Estate, gives insight into one of the estate’s largest areas of natural beauty: Q: Which types of fynbos can be found in the biodiversity corridor? A: The biodiversity corridor consists of renosterveld which is one of the biggest vegetation types in the Cape Floral Kingdom. Remnants of the original cover of the valley floor, Swartland Alluvium Renosterveld, can be seen here and there. This type of vegetation has now largely been destroyed by agricultural farming and developments.

30

GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2020

Every now and then nature needs a helping hand to regain its original state. Myself and the environmental team have been re-establishing indigenous plants in areas that have become denuded of these plants. This is an important part of biodiversity conservation and ultimately preserving the Cape’s natural heritage. Did you know that the Western Cape is more botanically diverse than the richest tropical rainforest in South America, including the Amazon? Another part of the rehabilitation process is to eradicate alien species invading the area. You might have noticed a collection of pine trees (not indigenous to South Africa) in the corridor – these larger pines will be left to die of old age as they are not extremely invasive, but any new pines will be removed.

WELLNESS

Singletrack to sustainability

Q: As part of the fynbos family, what is the life cycle of Swartland Alluvium Fynbos in the presence of fire? A: Fire is critical to the survival of all fynbos vegetation types, as the principle driver of serotinus plants, that hold onto their seeds until triggered by a fire. Swartland Alluvium Fynbos has a long fire cycle of around 10-15 years. Q: How do you go about reintroducing small animals, insects and birds into the corridor? A: For the most part, we allow the natural seral stages of vegetation to rehabilitate the area and as the habitat develops and the genetic diversity of the area increases, so other forms of life will expand. This is the flow of nature; the pollinating insects migrate to where there are flowers, the birds will soon follow to feast on these insects and eventually some of the smaller animals and reptiles will

naturally move back into the area. This being said, occasionally we do release rehabilitated birds, such as owls, back onto the estate and there are plans in place for further releases. Q: Is the biodiversity corridor open to residents? A: Yes. Conservation and rehabilitation play a huge role in the biodiversity corridor, but enjoying time in the space, appreciating its beauty and learning from it is just as important. I encourage residents to explore the walking and cycling paths that traverse through the biodiversity corridor while making sure to respect the area by staying on the paths and keeping dogs on a leash at all times. Financial Wellness The importance of long-term investment or saving needs little explanation. A wealth of benefits are afforded to individuals through effective long-term investing, but can be a daunting process. An appropriate adviser can help you make sense of complex structures, tax decisions, excessive fees, paperwork and other frictions that detract from results. WORDS BY COBUS KRUG ER, INTER NATIONAL FIDUCIARY AND INVESTMENT ADVISOR

There are many international investment options and structures available in the market but one of the most significant factors to consider is tax treatment. This leads to a host of other related questions.

• The percentage of total investments to be invested internationally, and where investments should be placed • Investment horizon • Investor risk profile

Taxation of investments results in a realized reduction of capital that limits the potential for future On the one hand, if the local stock market (JSE) growth. The compounding of investment growth is shows strong growth and a trend of outperforming a central principle in effective long-term investment. international stocks, local investment may seem to For compound growth to operate optimally, it is make the most sense. On the other hand, negative critical to ensure that as much of the events in the news may encourage growth generated over time remains investors to place investments overseas. A different type reduce emotional decision making. of tax, estate duty or situs tax, is levied against intergenerational asset transfers. How much to invest internationally? Before asking this question, investors should: International trusts tend to be the default structure to • Consider the importance of diversification – house direct international investments, but there are “not putting all your eggs in one basket” other more cost effective and tax efficient structures • Adopt a structured approach especially when available, e.g. international insurance wrappers, there are many investment choices international pension wrappers or even US$ life • Balance investment decisions against the insurance. components of a well-structured investment plan. Short-term assets These are usually assets where funds may need to be made available quickly. An important risk to consider is volatility, the measure of uncertainty associated with the investment. The investment may be negatively affected if stock markets lose value because the money might be needed just as the decline is at its worst. Investments such as money market funds might be appropriate. These should be in the local currency as the funds may be needed in the short term. Medium-term assets These are usually assets where funds may be needed in the medium term, for example, for a new car. An important investment risk to consider is correlation, the extent to which the values of investments move in relation to each other. While some capital growth is required, the investment should not be negatively affected when stock markets lose value. Investments like longer-term bond funds might be appropriate. Again these should be in the local currency as the funds may be needed in the short to medium term. Long-term assets These are usually assets set aside for long-term needs, such as a child’s studies or retirement. An important investment risk to consider is inflation. The investment should allow sufficient growth in excess of inflation to deliver capital growth over time. Equities or shares are best suited to deliver this growth and there is certainly an opportunity to invest some or all of these assets directly overseas. Currency fluctuations One major concern for investors is currency fluctuation. Thinking in local currency may be problematic, as emerging market currencies tend to be volatile. Instead of the local currency, investors should use the currency of their international investments as a reference. By thinking in

USD/EUR/GBP, better decisions can be made because the reference tends to be more constant. International investment should not aim to make money from currency fluctuations, but from investment performance. Considerations before you invest internationally: • Direct international investment should be considered, regardless of the local economic climate. • Structure is of critical importance, especially with regards to tax treatment and administration. • Up to 100% of the long-term assets in an investment portfolio should be in a direct international investment. • The recommended investment horizon is longer term up to 10 years.

We were finally able to shed the unwanted weight some of us gained due to lockdown-induced snacking, stressing and sitting.

In partnership with Discovery and Laureus Sport for Good, esteemed sports personalities encouraged residents to try new types of sport at an event at The Yard Wellness Centre which kicked started the ‘30 Days of Movement’ campaign. Former Springboks Bryan Habana and Jean de Villiers participated in 5-a-side soccer, Padel tennis and cricket while Elana Meyer, Olympic medalist long-distance runner, got us back into the groove with a 5km trot. Over the course of September, there were additional organised events to spark residents’ enthusiasm

to get active again. A hike up Paarl mountain with FitLife gym co-owner and coach John McGrath and Simon Allen, environmental officer at Val de Vie Estate, highlighted how our physical wellness is of little value when we lack mental and spiritual health. Incorporating nature’s serene beauty in a motivational and informative hike was the fuel needed to get our ‘engines’ started again. On the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature driving range young and old postures were aligned, keeping arms straight and knees softened, in preparation for the perfect golf swing. At the Val de Vie Equestrian Centre, pony painting and grooming workshops introduced young equine enthusiasts to taking care of our gentle giants and the foundation of good horsemanship.

Mountain peaks and fynbos make the Boland a hiker’s heaven

A sprinting and hurdling clinic, hosted by former South African Junior Champion Monique Janse van Noordwyk, was tailored to improve speed and technique of 7 - 13 year old aspirant athletes. Sometimes all it takes to get back in the rhythm of an active lifestyle is a single step out the front door. On Heritage Day a group of residents did exactly that and joined Simon Allen for a walk through the biodiversity corridor in their ‘back yard’. It was the perfect day to learn about the rich history of fauna and flora that once inhabited the region and are today rehabilitated on the estate. In 2020 we were reminded of how fragile our health is and that it truly is worth more than gold. Let’s never take for granted the wonderful environment we live in, the 1000-hectare space to move around in and the fresh, clean air we get to fill our lungs with.

Reading Code Understanding what causes disease is important not only in the quest for treatments, but to prevent it in the first place. Epigenetic testing provides a glimpse into unanswered questions about our health, wellness and ageing. WORDS BY DR LE DIVIA STR AUSS FR OM R EVITAHEALTH

R

evitaHealth offers epigenetic testing that gives a detailed and personalised report about your body and how it reacts to certain stimuli. The report recommends lifestyle and nutritional changes that will alter how you feel, assist with weight loss, suggest supplements and how to prevent diseases you might be predisposed to. What you eat, where you live, how you handle stress, who you interact with, how you exercise, how much you sleep, the supplements you take - all of these can cause chemical modifications in genes that will switch them on or off over time. Diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s are the result of genes switching away from its normal state. Our uniqueness is determined by the combinations of genes that are turned on or off, and the possible arrangements are endless.

36

GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2020

From the moment of conception, our cells start taking orders from our DNA (our unique ‘code’). How these orders are interpreted is determined by epigenetics. The concept of epigenetics has been around for more than 70 years, offering a comprehensive explanation of how biological systems function. It has placed the influence of our environment under a magnifying glass, proving how external stimuli contribute to human disorders and fatal diseases. Epigenetic testing allows us to map these different combinations and strive to keep the good while eliminating the bad. By doing so, we can possibly slow down ageing, stop obesity, and so much more. To make an appointment for a test, contact: info@revitahealth.co.za

John* Age: 38 | Gender: Male Environmental stimuli: - Highly stressful job - Healthy and fit, trains regularly - Follows a ketogenic diet - Drinks six cups of coffee per day Result: - Belly fat - Elevated cholesterol profile - Energy dips - Insomnia

Sally* Age: 28 | Gender: Female Environmental stimuli: - Constantly on a new diet - Overtraining to keep in good shape Result: - Lifelong struggle with weight - Irregular menstrual cycle

Gerrit* Age: 61 | Gender: Male Environmental Stimuli: - Smoking for over 40 years - Takes anti-hypertensive medication Result: - Suffered small cerebrovascular incidents (strokes)

The outcome: John’s epigenetic profile showed us that he was making unsuitable lifestyle choices specific to his genetic profile. His report revealed an excellent exercise response, but due to his high risk of inflammation we had to adapt his exercise program. He is also a slow caffeine metaboliser. With changes in diet and exercise, John achieved his optimal weight with a normal waist-hip ratio within 6 months. He is now metabolically healthy, has enough energy to get through the day without caffeine and also reports back as “sleeping like a baby”.

The outcome: Sally’s report revealed that she had epigenetic gene variants that severely impacts her detoxification pathways and therefore influences her estrogen and other hormone balances. After following a structured detox plan for 4 weeks, her regular menstrual cycle returned and has not fluctuated. Her struggle with weight is also something of the past.

The outcome: Gerrit’s report showed multiple genetic variants that placed him at high risk of having abnormal blood clotting. If he knew this earlier, it might have been easier to stop smoking or never have started with in the first place. His report also showed that he did not respond well to oxidative stress and toxin exposure. We worked out a diet, lifestyle plan and supplement suggestion to support his health as much as possible.

’m of the age where witnessing both Elana Meyer and Ryk Neethling take their rightful place on an Olympic podium happened from the same couch. A twelve-year investment in a piece of furniture is nothing to frown upon - I am a Boomer raised by a Silent Generation. If you are a Millennial reading this, I suggest you consult Google for clarification.

So, imagine my surprise when both these athletes show up at the first time trial event. I wasn’t a runner until about a year ago. Had to take up some form of exercise to silence my children (typical Millennials, you bet) and put to rest their growing concerns of a parent who much rather spent time on said couch than in the outdoors. Exercise was never part of my retirement plans, but Susan and Dough who moved in three houses from me in the village, made it look like fun. I joined their early morning walks mostly for the company, the laughter and to appreciate this beautiful estate I get to call home. Then, they proposed that we

walk briskly, which in a couple of weeks lead to us jogging. And before you could say ‘merke, gereed’ I was standing at the starting line of the time trial, face to face with my Olympic opponents. I managed to keep up with Ryk for a while. He is after all a swimmer and not a runner. But at kilometre two he suddenly changed gears and sprinted the rest of the way. Or so I imagine, as he became a tanned speck on the Val de Vie horizon. Elana was a different story all together. She managed to keep up with me. My children still don’t believe that their parent beat a long-distance silver medalist in a 5km run. As I am sitting on my couch - not the one that stood the test of three Olympic games - tying the laces of my running shoes, it dawns on me that when I watched her on TV in 1992, Elana was just a few years my junior. Raised too by a generation that wished for their children to have their own voice. Elana found hers. I am working on my mine.

Swimming to Longevity A gruelling ‘double’ crossing in choppy, fin-laden waters a notch above 10 degrees Celsius, isn’t how most 70-year olds prepare for their birthday celebrations. W O R DS BY T HE G RA PEVINE T EA M

T

uning in to the songs topping the charts over the past seven decades, Ray Mc Callum’s mental playlist lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes, the time it took him to complete an unpredictable open water swim of just over 15km in September this year. ‘Swimming to Robben Island from Bloubergstrand, the conditions were poor, and it took every ounce of stamina. On the way back, it was like glass!’ comments Ray.

An accomplished swimmer, Ray attempted the 7.7km one-way swim a year ago when he turned 69. Through lockdown, and with swimming facilities closed on the estate, Ray came up with creative ways to maintain his fitness and set his goal to swim to the island and in time for his next birthday: ‘I tethered rope to a drainage pipe in my pool at home on Val de Vie Estate and envisioned myself swimming in the open sea. It was difficult to motivate myself during this time, but I believe these challenging times propelled me to complete the double crossing this year.’ With a support boat by his side every stroke of the way, Ray triumphed the endurance mission exactly one month before his 70th birthday. Ranked among the most difficult in the world, the crossing doesn’t allow for a moment of rest and touching the boat or the Robben Island shore is not allowed. ‘For me, completing the one-way Robben Island swim when I turned 69, was equivalent to completing the Comrades marathon. Doubling the distance was a challenge of a lifetime.’ Adventurous plans for a 71st birthday bash? Maybe minus the sharks this time. 42

Primal Motion Inspired by the natural way animals move, the inventor of Pilates developed a unique training method that allows the human body to gracefully, and with ease, do what is asked of it. WOR DS BY THE GR AP EVINE TEAM

A

nimals instinctively know the correct way to move and breathe to protect themselves from injury. Observing cats, in particular, for hours on end, Joseph Pilates analysed their stretching movements and how they kept their muscles limber. He regarded the feline species as a supreme animal and named many of his exercises after other creatures such as The Seal, The Crab, The Swan and The Elephant, incorporating their graceful agility and playful movements. Pilates exercises are done while lying down, sitting or kneeling, to avoid excess strain on the heart and lungs. Strengthening the ‘core’ which includes the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks is the biggest benefit, as this corrects poor posture. Lateral breathing patterns are encouraged to improve muscle activation and performance. Strapped into a Reformer - the equipment originally developed by Joseph Pilates to rehabilitate injured soldiers - or rolling out a mat to do Pilates, is a personal preference. Pilates Mat Mat classes are offered in group format and recommended as a safe bet for beginners. During these exercises, your body learns to control muscles by using its own resistance. Adding props such as bands, weights, balls or rings will substantially increase the diversity of movements. 44

GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2020

Pilates Reformer The Reformer uses springs, pulleys, bars and straps to perform over 500 exercises in a variety of positions, regulating the amount of resistance. Reformer exercises can provide more challenging strength and endurance workouts than mat classes. It may also produce visible results sooner. The Pros of Both While both mat and Reformer classes offer results, it is arguable whether one is considered better than the other for beginners. Any specific beginner class, whether mat or reformer, should offer a basic understanding that can be applied to both. The benefits of Pilates mat classes are that it’s accessible, affordable, and requires little equipment. Reformer is great for people that don’t yet have a strong enough core to perform the mat exercises. Reformer benefits furthermore include increased full-body strength training, more variations on the classic exercises, a more functional approach that benefits your daily life activities and more one-onone attention. s the host for the Absa Cape Epic grand finale, it’s no surprise that Val de Vie Estate is home to a large mountain biking community. The estate has 42 km of off-road trails to explore, and now has a facility for the more adventurous riders to test their limits. The new ramps, berms, obstacles and various surfaces on the 400 m circuit offer riders the opportunity to develop their balance, bike control and confidence in a fun and safe environment. Bad habits, crashes and frustration build up while out on trails due to inexperience and limited knowledge on how to handle technical sections. Mountain bike clinics that cater for riders of all ages and skill level, are hosted regularly by expert trainers and professional mountain bikers.

There is so much to discover on the estate and numerous world-class trails to take on in the Cape Winelands. Learning to ride a bike is an important milestone for a child. Mastering mountain biking takes their confidence to a whole new level. The same goes for adults, too.

HOW TO SPEAK BIKE Mountain biking has an entire dialect of its own. Even seasoned riders get confused with what their buddies are saying out on the trail. Many of the slang terms originate from cycling subcultures such as offroad motorcycling, but new words are invented on almost every ride. Here are a few explanations to the unique lingo: 1. Stomp Definition: To successfully land after a very, very difficult trick from a great height, without flaw. Not to be confused with: The action of heavily treading one’s foot on the floor. 2. Shred Definition: To ride a trail with passion, speed, skill and style. Not to be confused with: The shredding of paper.

Fearless, focused and ready to fight the spread of Covid-19 all at the same time

3. Bail Definition: To deliberately leap off your bike, often at great risk, to avoid ending up in an even worse collision. Also, a term commonly used to describe crashing in general. Not to be confused with: The money you post so that a suspect can be released from pre-trial detention. 4. Granny Gear Definition: The lowest gear available on a bike, which only a grandmother would need to use. Designed for steep uphill climbing, but extremely easy to pedal in on flat ground. Not to be confused with: An item from your grandmother’s closet 5. Lid Definition: Protective gear worn on your head aka a helmet. Not to be confused with: A removable cover for a jar. we were stabled, snug, warm, fed and groomed. Not a bad life. The good thing seems to be that our humans found a way to save it. Smart that. The dam idea. And then on a gloriously sunny Saturday in October, about 50 of us – mounted by polo players and equestrian enthusiasts - paraded through our home turf. Starting from the main gate, we were greeted by friendly humans as we passed trees laced with mintgreen leaves. Tempting but we know how to show good manners in public. We’re sensitive to mood, you know, and we could feel the excitement. Wearing our official polo attire, we just knew that it was time, that this could mean the start of a new polo season. Only once we turned left at the main boulevard towards the Pavilion field

did we realise that we were about to play our first match of the season. People parked their vehicles on the side of the field and in authentic polo fashion, watched us play from the comfort of the tail-end of their cars. Well, they call it the ‘tail end’. Both ends look the same to us. They sat on picnic blankets and camping chairs. Everyone was spread out and we heard it was something to do with ‘social distancing.’ Much trickier for us, mind you, when we’re nose to rump and after a ball. It was different this season, very different, from the big crowds, sipping champagne while wearing high heels and sundresses. But we liked it. We galloped at full speed, changed directions in split seconds, chased after that elusive little white ball and had the time of our lives. 51

icky Carter Johnson grew up close to the earth. As a child, his family harvested greens and seasonal fruit from their back garden. Free range hens supplied daily eggs, plus free fertiliser, and local farmers delivered fresh milk.

A longing for this type of connectedness to Mother Earth was fuelled by the national lockdown. While doing garden maintenance for his neighbours to pass the dreaded “hard” lockdown weeks, Ricky pondered the idea of opening a nursery on Val de Vie Estate and contacted his golf and cycling buddy, Pierre du Plessis, who holds a 32-year track record in the landscaping and nursery realms. ‘We conducted a visit to the L’Huguenot wine cellar and overlooked its magnificent vineyard views when

the name for the nursery struck: D’Vine Nursery.’ Ricky and Pierre believe that each garden has a purpose and the potential to tell a story. Whether the story is an anecdote or a novel, the gardener – like the author – must use a certain skillset and tools to ensure interest and excitement as the story unfolds. Interest in the nursery has been overwhelming since the opening in early October. Residents are making the most of the warm weather and eased water restrictions to cultivate gardens that entice you to read every chapter in the story. New seasonal plants arrive weekly at D’Vines Nursery. For more information and gardening advice, email alison.carter-johnson@webmail.co.za

WINE

CAPE BLEND 2018 PINOTAGE: 60% SHIRAZ: 40% VINEYARD: Majority of grapes were harvested from Paarl and Wellington area. WINE-MAKING: Grapes were hand-picked and hand sorted. The varieties were harvested separately at optimal ripeness between 24,5 – 25,5 degrees Balling. Each variety was fermented separately at between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius. During wine-making there was minimal intervention, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs, for extraction of colour and flavour. After fermentation extended skin contact of fourteen days was allowed. Malolactic fermentation took place in 225L French Oak Barrels and also aged for 12 months. Thereafter, blending took place and the wine was returned to the barrels for a further 6 to 8 months to ensure optimal integration of fruit and oak. COLOUR: Dark red with purple hues NOSE: Vibrant red fruits/cherry with subtle white pepper spice and violets PALETTE: A layered wine with well integrated fruit (cherry/plum/ blackberry) and oak flavours (nutmeg/pepper). Good structured wine with elegant tannins and a lingering aftertaste. Best to be enjoyed with hearty meat dishes. ANALYSIS: Alc: 13.5 / Ph: 3.56 Residual Sugar: 3.45 g/L Total Acid: 5.44 g/L +27(0)21 876 8037 / orders@lhuguenot.com / www.valdevie.co.za

SECURITY

Safe and Sound Thorburn has been involved with the estate as security partner since its early days. This has allowed for an in-depth understanding of the vision for the estate and an inconspicuous integration of security systems. W OR DS BY LOUIS DE JAGER , SECUR ITY AND R ISK MANAGER

T

he quality of life our residents are afforded can mostly be attributed to them not having to be concerned about crime or their safety while inside the parameters of the estate. Our country remains an ever-changing risk environment and security that is holistic and makes use of the latest technology, is of paramount importance. Equally important is for security systems to remain unobtrusive. The challenge is the sheer size and complexity of the estate. Aside from the barrier protection for the 15.5km perimeter and access control across six main points, Thorburn also provides 24/7 security for the residential areas, the Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis and Camelot Spa, conference rooms and function venues, Val de Vie Evergreen and commercial facilities.

An additional three wellness centres, two delis, three restaurants, equestrian facilities with over 100 stables, a polo club and polo fields also require observation. Throw in the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, 300 hectares of parks, fynbos and wildlife reserves, farms and lakes, and you start getting the picture of what needs safeguarding on a daily basis. Even with all the complexities and daily demands of such a huge dynamic and constantly

evolving estate, it remains a rewarding experience working with Thorburn. Staff training, risk assessments and continual upgrades on the existing security offering means that the latest and best in technology and tactical security is implemented. Thorburn has created a holistic ever-evolving integrated safety and security matrix that not only prevents unwanted elements from entering the estate, but also maintains control of unwanted behaviour within the estate. With the festive season upon us, we appeal to all parents planning on spending their holiday at home, to be aware of their child’s whereabouts. We are seeing far too many transgressions from the younger generation that resides on the estate. New strategically placed cameras now monitor ‘hotspots’ where juvenile delinquency is taking place, specifically around The Yard, where malicious damage to equipment is rearing its head. With the warmer evenings upon us, the nocturnal movement of not only animals, but children also, are increasing. Zero tolerance will be granted towards vandalism and unlicensed driving by our younger residents. Let’s show our gratitude and respect towards the Thorburn team. It is after all thanks to them that we sleep soundly at night.
