Daar's 'n land by die see wat my alles kan gee Dit is 'n land wat vreugde bring Bokant die berge tot in die vallei Dis die wêreld net vir my Dis my land, my land, die Boland net vir my Dis die land waar ek liefde kry Dis my land, my land, hier wil ek bly Want jy deel hierdie land met my As ek saans so alleen langs die Bergrivier ry Dan voel my hart so bly Dit is die Boland, die wêreld vir my Want jy deel hierdie land met my Dis my land, my land, die Boland net vir my Dis die land waar ek liefde kry Dis my land, my land, hier wil ek bly Want jy deel hierdie land met my – Lied van die Boland, Gert van Tonder

Subtitles were added to Season 3 for English-speaking and hearing-impaired viewers to also enjoy the show, and we've received positive feedback in showing a wider audience the wonderful lifestyle featured on Val de Vie Estate.

Q: You have won numerous competitions (including some internationally) on the bodybuilding circuit. Please can you give us some more detail?

A: In 2017, I competed in Musclemania South Africa. This competition was brutal for me as it was my first, and I had no prior coaching, no assistance with financing or support from my family. Still, I achieved third place in the Men’s Physique category, which was a fantastic achievement considering that it was my first show and the

setbacks I encountered. That same year I also entered the Pretoria Classic and placed second. In 2018, I entered the World Fitness Federation (WFF) qualifiers, and I won. First place allowed me to qualify for the 2018 WFF Universe show in Singapore under the Men’s Physique category. I placed fifth in this show, which was a massive personal achievement. You could say I became somewhat unstoppable after this show by achieving first place in multiple shows over the last four years, with the most memorable being: Mike flexes his muscles in front of his haul of bodybuilding trophies and medals.

- 2021 IBFF Cape Classic: Mr Physique – first place - 2021 IBFF Pro-Am: Mr Athletic – first place - 2022 PCA Xtreme Classic: Sports Model – first place - 2022 PCA Xtreme Classic: Men’s physique – first place Q: You achieved something very unusual most recently by clinching gold in two categories. Please can you elaborate?

A: I entered two categories for the Physical Culture Association (PCA) Xtreme Classic this year, Men’s Physique and Sports Model. I managed to win first place in both categories. The Men’s Physique category focuses on the waist up and so you typically see athletes in this class wearing boardshorts. It’s more of a beach look that focuses on the upper body. In contrast, for the Sports Model category competitors wear Speedos which focus on the entire body and legs. What makes this achievement so special is that after all the various category winners have been selected in the PCA Xtreme Classic, we compete for the competition’s overall winner. I was fortunate enough to be awarded first place, which meant I was crowned the overall winner too. Q: What do you do to keep your classes interesting an exciting?

A: I feel I bring an energy to my sessions that I transfer onto my clients, making

them fun, motivating and helping them to achieve their goals. I also have a good sense of recognising when my clients have low days, and I always ensure I create an atmosphere that overrides whatever is weighing on their shoulders. Another way I

Slow Living Sanctuary Our Val de Vie Estate property provided the perfect blank canvas, but working with an incredible interior design team has transformed it into a remarkable new home. WORDS BY MAGDALENA CAMPBELL

I might have relatively "good taste" as a local artist, still, I can say without hesitation that my vision was brought to life and entirely elevated by Jackie Fitzgerald and Dayler Wener from Story Design Collective. It's mind-blowing what a big difference it makes working with professionals. Things that took me weeks to mull over, they could decide definitively in minutes. We met a few times while I was still living in Cape Town, and honestly, it always felt like visiting friends. This house and its renovations were vitally important to me. I wanted to ensure that I did my best with our investment, and I wanted the best team. I did months of interior research and collected thousands of inspiration images on Pinterest for each room or idea. I spent a great deal of time just thinking through each aspect to be confident that each decision was made intentionally. My inspiration was neutral and contemporary, with lots of curves, black accents, greens, wood panelling, natural light oak floors, areas of brushed concrete and lots of marble. I wanted as many raw materials as we could source to elevate the bones of the house to have more character, something it really lacked. Most of our budget was spent on the floors, the permanent fixtures like the marble fireplace, panelling and the bathrooms. We wanted to ensure that the house as a whole was elevated so that we could easily and

cost-effectively change the colours and furniture in future. The kitchen wasn't bad but could have definitely used a little facelift. It's incredible what paint and tiles can do. First, we changed the backsplash to a more contemporary tile and painted the wooden vinyl accents

adding curves and semicircular details. The black handles we added to the cupboards pick up on this feature piece. Our master bathroom had a separate toilet that took up quite a bit of space and left the rest of the bathroom with a bath and small shower. My idea was to knock the wall down to add a third more space. I desperately wanted a double shower and enough room for a double vanity. Our team designed the most beautiful bathroom with custom vanities, stunning marble for the counters and a giant curved bath. The face-level storage sinks in the wall, and the double shower has the most beautiful black-framed doors that go straight up to our high ceiling, creating an almost accidental steam shower. We added black sanitaryware to all of our bathrooms. Another big difference was simply changing the light fixtures to more modern pieces. We also painted our front door black, which has made a beautiful difference to our home's exterior. We've had our gardening team add big round black pots with granadillas at the front of the house and white bougainvillea across the side. We are busy growing greenery along with the house for a bit more privacy. Our furniture is neutral, layered and textural. We have mixed contemporary high-end pieces with vintage finds to create an understated luxury feel to the home. I've designed two lamps with Palmy Living that serve as functional art pieces around the house. Our home is still bare in a few places since we prioritised quality over getting everything done at once, so this will be an ongoing love project for us for years to come as our needs and taste evolve.

The new interiors boast contemporary neutral tones and bold accents of colour, perfectly paired with natural materials such as marble and wooden panelling.

Rescuing Baby Birds While orphaned fledglings exist, it is uncommon for bird parents to abandon their young. When birds are born, some are covered in down and are immediately active. These members of precocial species include spurfowl, ducks and lapwings, and because they are highly mobile but in constant danger from cats, dogs and vehicles, they are kept under the watchful eye of their parents 24/7. Altricial species give birth to naked and blind nestlings that need to remain in the nest where parental care is critical to their survival. Once feathers emerge on altricial youngsters, they are called fledglings and find themselves at a stage where they start exercising their wings. Once the wings are strong enough, the youngster may leave the nest. Unfortunately, this exposes them to threats as they are not yet strong enough to defy gravity and also not savvy enough to identify a potentially dangerous situation. At this stage, well-intentioned people may also try to ‘rescue’ the fledgling. This, however, should not be attempted as not

The image of a ladybird has been adopted by filmmakers, fashion houses, wine labels, and book publishers and is one of the first insects that small children recognise. Ladybirds come in all shapes and sizes, and several species are found in South Africa. They are known to dine almost exclusively on insects we consider pests, such as aphids. Ladybirds lay hundreds of eggs in aphid colonies, and as soon as the larvae hatch, they immediately start feeding. The larvae can grow up to two centimetres long over six weeks. When the larvae are fully grown, they form pupae. It takes three to seven days for the pupae to develop into adult ladybirds. These incredibly beneficial insects also consume fruit flies and mites.

old tale of ‘if you touch a young bird, the parents will desert it’, is false). However, the best idea is to leave it alone and monitor the situation. On occasion, fledgling parents may desert the youngster if it is sick or physically impaired. In these cases, the youngster rarely survives, even if rescued. If the parents are killed, it is difficult for the youngster to survive alone, so this is the one case where a rescue is called for. Taking care of a rescued fledgling is a specialised business and is best left to a rehabilitation centre. It is illegal to keep wild birds in captivity without relative permits. All too often, such birds are fed an incorrect diet and die from

A Warmer Winter for Little Ones in Our Valley Our residents once again opened their hearts for the annual Val de Vie Foundation Blanket Drive. Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres were identified this year by the Inceba Trust, and over 500 Drakenstein children received a blanket. These children, between the ages of 1 - 5 years, attend creches and other childhood development facilities and need blankets to keep them warm during their afternoon naps. Commenting, Nielen Bekker, CEO of Inceba Trust, said "our approach is to ensure that children thrive during the first six years of their life, so that they are learning-ready when they hit the school benches in Grade R. We create ECD centres that operate effectively and provide a secure environment for children and their practitioners. Handing out blankets and seeing the little ones wrap them around them to endure the Cape winter chill has been heartwarming." We wish to thank our residents for their contribution to the success of the 2022 Val de Vie Foundation Blanket Drive.

Reading to our Children

As a result of last year’s success and the wonderful feedback we received, we are repeating the campaign this year. In addition, we would like to invite Val de Vie Estate residents to volunteer 67 minutes of their time to join us and read to children. This is part of our campaign to highlight the importance of reading, to rolemodel adults reading to children, and in the long run to increase reading in the homes of all our children.

Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. In 2021, the WCED @HomeLearning program, under the leadership of Hope Through Action, ran an extremely successful Mandela Day campaign in partnership with the Val de Vie Foundation and Nal’ibali. We challenged each hub team of @HomeLearning interns (YeBoneers) to conduct 67 home visits, reading and sharing Nal’ibali stories with children and caregivers of each household. The Val de Vie Foundation sponsored 12 500 special Mandela Day issues that were used and distributed – and the results surpassed all expectations, regardless of the Covid challenges at the time: instead of 536 home visits, the 8 hubs managed 617 home visits – an average of 77 per hub.

Fast Response Fire Truck for Val de Vie Estate Prior fire incidences outside our Estate have necessitated a fire truck. Val de Vie Estate cannot solely manage the potential damage to a house or the environment due to the legal obligations associated with fire, including the risk to human life and property. The

• EQUESTRIAN •

Goodbye to our Golden Girl Julia sadly passed away on the 26 May 2022. She was born in 2000, and her full name was Sportive Julia Circumstance. She was part of the Val de Vie Equestrian Centre for four years and dominated as the herd’s matriarch. Our Jules did not hesitate to keep the other ponies in check, chasing them around and claiming her territory, however, she also protected other horses, especially the ones that were ‘picked on’.

location of the Estate also means there could be a delay in the arrival of fire brigade and other response vehicles.

Her strong build and easy gait taught many of our residents to ride and touched hearts with her gentle nature. She is sorely missed by the instructors, grooms and riders alike.

The recently acquired Unimog 4x4 fire truck is adequately kitted out with essential equipment to act as a first response vehicle until the fire department arrives. We also have regular veld fires that pose a risk of entering the Estate; therefore, this vehicle can enter offroad areas. The fire truck is fitted with two high-powered petrol-driven pumps, one for full use and one for standby. These pumps can supply two high-performance smaller spray firefighting water lances or one far-reaching heavy-duty nozzle. The truck has a 3000-litre tank, and the pumps are fitted with a foaming module which effectively decreases water consumption by a third to extend the duration of available water from the tank. The tank also has a quick fill-up line that can be connected to a fire hydrant on the Estate for easy filling during use. In addition, with the compact design of the Unimog, the accessibility to hard-to-reach areas on the Estate is made even more accessible. Let’s all be fire safe, focus on prevention and the timely reporting of any possible incident to protect this magnificent Estate and its environment. In case of any sign of an uncontrolled fire, residents should contact the fire brigade as well as Val de Vie Security.

Good Value for Money and a Great Experience All Round At the Pearl Valley Clubhouse, a warm and welcoming atmosphere awaits during winter and our Valley restaurant serves up delicious meals at excellent prices. WORDS BY PEARL VALLEY GENERAL MANAGER, DAMIAN WRIGLEY

Every morning in winter by 07:00, fireplaces are lit, fresh croissants and scones are baked, and our baristas are ready to create artisan coffees. Our winter menu includes a la carte options and daily specials for breakfast, lunch and dinner. During the week, we offer incredible value for money on Tuesday Italian evenings and Wednesday curry evenings. In addition, our food and wine pairings every second Thursday are perfect for those special occasions when you don't feel like cooking at home. We will soon introduce live music sessions in the Clubhouse. Keep an eye out on the weekly newsletter and social media channels for more info. We love to see Val de Vie Estate residents in the Clubhouse after a round of golf, sitting down for a meal or enjoying a drink on the outside terrace. Our Estate has many hospitality options, and The Valley restaurant continuously strives to keep our residents entertained, well-fed, and warm during the cold winter months.
