In the Here and Now
WORDS BY RYK NEETHLING, VAL DE VIE ESTATE MARKETING DIRECTOR AND VAL DE VIE POLO CLUB MEMBER
At a time when we are all living in a digital age, many of us struggle to be present. With mobile phones, social media and work – technology demands our constant attention. It shifts our focus, impacting on our ability to concentrate and in our busy, modern lives our minds are frequently somewhere other than where our bodies are. Horses on the other hand are always present in the here and now. They can graze and play in one moment and in the next, their survival instincts kick in and enable them to move quickly, should they detect a threat. Once the perceived threat is over;
they can go back to grazing and just being. We can learn a great lesson from horses. When we lack presence, we are in danger of missing out, of misunderstanding and making mistakes – all of which, over time, can negatively impact our physical health and mental well-being. I have been playing polo for just over two years, and it has been a life changing experience. My anchor to the here and now. It requires my complete concentration, and hours pass by in what feels like minutes as I work to stay focused on the speed of the ball in play, the twitch of my pony’s ears indicating her mood, the
changing positions of my teammates and our opposition – all while trying to stay in the saddle. I hope that you will support the Val de Vie Polo Club with your presence this season. Our matches and tournaments are for everyone to enjoy either on the field or from the sidelines. A place to gather with family and friends for picnics or playdates, where children can run and play and just be in the moment. Polo is part of the fabric of life on Val de Vie Estate. Our polo fields create wide open spaces that provide us all with space to breathe and to reflect – and to be more present.

Security Update
The peace of mind that Val de Vie Estate offers its residents is a founding pillar of the Estate. Regarded as the safest Estate in South Africa, our world-class Security Team ensures that our Estate offers an unrivalled place to reside and live your best life. The perimeter fence that encloses the Estate is two metres high and spans 17km long. It not only acts as a formidable physical barrier but also deters criminal activity with anti-dig razor wire and 138 thermal cameras which sense movement and body heat. A breach attempt triggers alarms in the Estate control room and at an off-site monitoring centre. A CCTV network and on-site patrols ensure an active, eyes-on-the-ground approach to security surveillance. The 189 internal Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) cameras focus primarily on the open spaces and roads with complete privacy masks shielding the view into homes whilst protecting residents’ property.
The Security Team is exceptionally well connected with intelligence teams in the wider area and with constant monitoring and evaluation the focus is on the prevention of incidents. With constant change taking place in the environment outside the Estate, residents can rest assured that we are indeed, in the safest hands.
We wish to remind residents of the 40 km/h Estate-wide speed limit and 25 km/h around The Yard Wellness Centre. Please drive slowly and give pedestrians, cyclists, children, and animals right of way.
Estate Update
I admire people who make themselves available to serve as homeowner-elected trustees. The role is one of immense responsibility that, at times, may seem unappreciated. This in turn highlights how much passion an elected trustee has for their community and the Estate.
A decision was taken that this year’s homeowner-elected trustee group will be portfolio driven. What this means is that they will not only serve on, but also chair a sub-committee. Sub-committees are where the majority of these trustees' work takes place. Sub-committees enable a 'divide and conquer’ approach by distributing the detailed planning and insights of each of the board's many responsibilities across smaller groups of appropriately skilled members.
Each homeowner-elected trustee was paired with a sub-committee that best suits their experience and skill set. This ensures continuous involvement and a closer, more transparent working relationship with the Val de Vie Estate HOA Management Team.
The Val de Vie Estate HOA sub-committees and their respective chairpersons are:
• Security – Jan Botha
• Finance and Risk – Dr Jonathan Bloom
• Aesthetics – Stephen Whitehead
• Governance and Legal – Dr Chris Vorster
• Asset Management and Maintenance –Rudi Eggers
I would like to remind everyone that trustees, of their own volition, work for the homeowner collective and the betterment of our evolving Estate.
I want to congratulate and thank these gentlemen in advance for their selfless service.

Time to Play
Known as the ‘Sport of Kings’ polo is one of the oldest team sports in history. Its exact origins are unknown, but it is believed that around 2 000 years ago, polo was used across Persia and Central Asia as a way of preparing warriors for battle.
Today, polo is a sport for everyone, particularly on Val de Vie Estate. The season runs from October until April and during this time, tournaments and weekly chukkas take place on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and on Sunday mornings at either the Pavilion Polo field, Champion’s Polo field or the Multi-Purpose Sports field by the Berg River bridge (see map below).
Come along and support the Val de Vie Polo Club players and ponies! There’s no need to buy tickets, just turn up and enjoy the fun, speed and thrill of the game. Invite family and friends, pack a picnic and choose a spot on the grass or bring your car and ‘tailgate’.
Details of all fixtures will be included within the weekly e-newsletters, as well as being displayed on the blackboard at the Polo Pavilion and the electronic screens at both the Berg River and Main gates. For more updates follow @valdeviepolo on Instagram.
The Ponies
Polo ponies are fast, agile champions with a heart for winning. The ideal pony is small, around 14 – 16 ‘hands’, and must be able to turn and stop quickly, but gallop even faster.
Polo ponies are usually thoroughbreds taken from the racing world and then trained in the art of polo.
Their manes are trimmed or ‘roached’ and their tails are tied up to prevent them from getting tangled in the mallets during the game.
Polo is a fast game, and the horses need to be rested in-between chukkas. This also explains why one player needs a string of ponies for each game (ranging from four to eight ponies).
The Rules
There are four players per team.
All players must hold the mallet in their right hand (for safety reasons), a rule instated in 1974 by the US Polo Association.
Known as the ‘Sport of Kings’ polo is one of the oldest team sports in history.
The ball is hit with the head of the mallet and not the narrow ends.
The periods in a game are called chukkas, each match consists of four to six chukkas.
A goal is scored when the ball crosses the line, regardless of its height, or if it was hit by a mallet, a pony’s hoof or off another player.

The Players
Each team consists of four mounted players, which can be mixed teams of both men and women. Players are assigned a numbered position with a specific set of responsibilities during the game:
NUMBER 1: ON THE OFFENCE This is the most offence-focused position on the field. Generally, Number 1 covers the opposing team’s Number 4.
NUMBER 2: THE GO GETTER Given the difficulty of this position, it is not uncommon for the best player on the team to play Number 2, just as long as another strong player is available to play Number 3. Another important offensive position, this person is responsible for either running through or scoring themselves. Defensively, they will cover the opposing team's Number 3.
NUMBER 3: THE LEADER OF THE PACK As a tactical leader this player must be a long powerful hitter to feed balls to Number 2 and Number 1 as well as maintaining a solid defence. The best player on the team is usually the Number 3.
NUMBER 4: ON THE DEFENCE They can move anywhere on the field, but they usually try to prevent scoring. The emphasis on defence by Number 4 allows Number 3 to attempt more offensive plays, since they know that they will be covered if they lose the ball.
MEET THE VAL DE VIE POLO CLUB PLAYERS
Ignaz Marx
An accomplished player with over 13 years of experience, Ignaz successfully participated in polocrosse before being introduced to polo. Today, he enjoys the challenge of riding multiple ponies as well as sharing his passion for the game with his family (which includes wife Marlie) and friends. Ignaz shares a very special bond with ShotGun –who he trained. ShotGun has been nominated on multiple occasions as the ‘Best Playing Pony’ at many of the polo tournaments he has attended, something which Ignaz is especially proud of.
Marlie Marx
Marlie was first introduced to polo by her husband Ignaz. She started playing around two years ago, and now describes herself as being ‘in love’ with the game. This season, Marlie is committed to working hard on her polo prowess, and hopes that one day she will be able to play alongside her husband on the same team. Her perfect polo pony is Set Me Alight, a gentle but feisty thoroughbred mare – with whom she shares a special bond. For Marlie, polo isn’t just a sport, but a way of life.

When did you first start playing polo?
I first started playing at the age of nine. My father, uncles and siblings were all involved in polo, and so it was something that played an important role in my life from a young age – and still does, 50 years on.
Where has your career as a professional player and coach taken you?
I feel very privileged to have played in many of the provinces across South Africa and all over the world, including the United Kingdom – where I achieved a handicap of four – as well as in tournaments across Ireland, Zimbabwe and Zambia, where I was born.
What do you enjoy most about the game?
The exhilaration and the incredible relationship between horse and rider. The thrill of playing is indescribable and once you’ve tried it, I guarantee that you’ll be hooked! I love the competitiveness and also the camaraderie between the players both on and off the field.
Do you need any special skills to start playing polo?
You need to be able to ride to a reasonable level, although learning to play polo will actually improve your horse riding. You also need to be able to hold the stick and play right-handed.
Can you tell us about the lessons that you offer on the Estate?
A private polo lesson is typically charged at R1 000 per hour, which consists of technical instruction on one of the steel horses – this then progresses to stick and balling on a polo pony. For a first lesson, I typically focus on the technical control of the polo mallet, as well as the position of the rider on the horse. All lessons take place to the side of the main Pavilion Polo field. I also offer group lessons.
What do you love about teaching polo?
Teaching polo to others has always been a passion of mine, and I am so delighted that we have around 20 new players, both men and women coming into the game. We also have a group of children who play, we call them ‘nippers’ starting from just six years of age.
Do you have a favourite polo pony?
Of course all of the polo ponies are very special and loved, but for me, Libby has a special place in my heart. She is capable of looking after someone as young as six, but was also able to carry Prince Harry for two chukkas when he played on Val de Vie Estate in the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup back in 2015.
Kicking up a Storm
Meet Storm, the latest addition to the team at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club. A beautiful bay, thoroughbred gelding he will be celebrating his 10th birthday on 15 October. With a gentle, friendly nature, he is settling in well to his new surroundings and making lots of friends. In his spare time, Storm enjoys eating and being groomed. The team at the Equestrian Club are looking forward to using Storm during their riding lessons and outrides in the coming weeks.

Free Range Kids
In the Valley of Life, we embrace nature and the authentic country lifestyle we lead. We cherish the sense of community shared with our neighbours and friends across the Estate. Children grow up carefree, establishing friendships from their early years, with the freedom to walk or cycle and explore, including 20 play parks around the Estate and the bicycle park at The Yard Wellness Centre. The play parks provide a variety of equipment for children to play and learn. In this beautiful and safe environment, our younger residents can spend time outside, relaxing, socialising and having fun in the sun.
Recently a new playground opened in the green space to the rear of the ViLLAGE deli and Fleet Coffee at the L’Huguenot Cellar. Designed and built by Cape Jungle Kids, the new playground is set amongst the towering trees and is the perfect place to run, jump, slide, zipline and climb. Little ones will also enjoy exploring a new sandpit space and being pushed on the swings.
Our busy, modern lifestyles and electronic devices can tempt and distract children from the simple act of play. It is considered so essential that the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights recognises play as the fundamental right of every child.
Playing is critical in helping kids to develop confidence and emotional, social and creative thinking skills. It also allows children to engage with their environment and others in a fun and relaxed setting while exploring new ideas and embracing their creativity, finding different ways to test their boundaries and learning to care for others and the environment.

Mother Nature’s Masterpieces
The orchid family is possibly, after the daisies, one of the most prolific plant families on Earth with around 30,000 species known. With their unmistakable mirror-image symmetry, orchids are easy to identify as a flower family, called Orchidaceae.
While most people think of orchids as the magnificent plants often kept at home, these are actually members of an exotic species that typically originate in tropical areas. Here in the Cape Floral Kingdom, we do have a number of very beautiful examples, such as the Disas, Satyrs and Ceratandra groups.
On Val de Vie Estate, we have so far identified five species found tucked away in the renosterveld areas, the most distinct being the golden satyr or rewwa-trewwa (Satyrium coriifolium) while the smelly satyr or rooikappie (Satyrium odorum) and granny's bonnet or moederkappie (Pterygodium orobranchoides) being a smaller and greener bloom are often overlooked. The cowled friar or mammakappie (Pterygodium catholcium) and the baby bonnet or babakappie (Dispersis villosa) are very small and relatively short flowering and so are also easy to miss.
The fact that our orchids are terrestrial and for most of our hotter months are not visible, and as many orchids only flower after a fire, there will certainly be others present that will only show once areas of the bio corridor are burned. In many species, pollination is highly specialised, with often only a single insect species adapted to perform this function.
Do try to find a little time to get out and about on the Estate for a walk or cycle and enjoy these miracles of Mother Nature first-hand.

Goosing Around
The Cape grey mongoose (Herpestes pulverulentus) is a small mammal indigenous to Southern Africa and is the most commonly spotted mongoose on Val de Vie Estate.
Did You Know?
They are predominantly carnivorous mainly eating insects and serving as important agents for biocontrol by consuming so-called ‘pests’. On their menu is ground birds, small reptiles, amphibians, eggs and fruit. There have been records of Cape grey mongoose stalking and killing puff adders.
They belong to the same scientific family as the meerkat (Herpertidae). Although these two distant cousins look alike and have the same taste in food, they are actually very different. For instance, meerkats are highly sociable and live in groups of up to 30 members, while mongoose are solitary creatures.
While they have five sharp claws on each of their toes, their tracks only show four.
These little mammals might seem timid and fragile, but they are highly skilled and opportunistic hunters. Their hunting style is similar to a cat’s as they will crouch, stalk, pounce on their prey and eventually go in for the kill with a deadly bite to the head.
They weigh between 0.5 and 1kg and their slender bodies are roughly 35cm long. Their bushy tails are about the same length as their bodies.

Sevens Rugby Tournament Roars Back for 2022
After a two-year Covid-19 induced hiatus, we were delighted to again support the premier Boland Region non-fee-paying primary schools' sevens rugby tournament organised by Klapmuts Primary.
The Klapmuts u/13 Sevens Tournament 2022 attracted sixteen teams from all over the Boland with 192 players and 32 coaches. It was professionally organised with the support of teachers, security guards, medical personnel and referees. The players and spectators were delighted to meet Branco du Preez current South African sevens rugby player and enjoyed the surprise visit of Ryk Neethling and CJ Stander representing the Val de Vie Foundation.
We look forward to tracking the career of Player of the Tournament Christian August, who plays for the winning team Paarlzicht Primary.
It gives the Val de Vie Foundation great joy to have supported this tournament from inception, truly ensuring that the Valley represents all the best that Boland has to offer.

Creating Entrepreneurs in our Valley
The Val de Vie Foundation sponsors the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy (FHA) Entrepreneurship Training Course.
"I wish I had known all this when I started my business. My mistakes are so clear to me now”, says Garlin Alberts, business owner of Elect and Tool Specialist who has seen his business come to life after attending the newly launched Val de Vie Foundation Entrepreneurship training course at FHA.
The Val de Vie Foundation's investment was initially intended for aspiring entrepreneurs but was repurposed to support existing small business owners who needed formal training to take their businesses to the next level.
FHA launched the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Entrepreneurship Training course in 2021 with its existing hospitality curriculum. It was so well received that the Val de Vie Foundation agreed to extend it to the wider community.
Small business owners, from clothing manufacturers to handymen, have been involved in the eight-week course learning about business structure and planning. They are also being trained on the principles of ensuring a sustainable, successful business. None of the students had formally registered their businesses before and the training has guided them on how to implement these much needed steps in establishing a business.
Letisha Erasmus, one of the students, recounted: "I am learning so much from the course and my classmates. I am getting so many new ideas, like venturing into the e-commerce space, which wasn't something I had thought about before."
Founded in 2015, the Val de Vie Foundation is passionate about investing for sustainable numerous viable community projects. A faith-based initiative, its aim is to provide a better this beautiful Valley we call home.
