Oh, and there’s the music, too… Gillian Warren-Brown highlights six festivals to add to your bucket list There’s a particular thrill in being a part of the throbbing rhythm of thousands of people who’ve converged in the same place, at the same time, for the same reason – to party at a music festival. Their magic has spread across the globe and there are now hundreds to choose from.

Here’s a small selection, picked for their geographical spread and their individual, sometimes quirky, character

Coachella Music and Arts Festival Indio, California, US The Empire Polo Club in Indio, with its palm trees and lush green turf, looks like an oasis in the California desert. For two consecutive weekends in April, it hosts one of the US’s most popular music festivals, with an attendance of 95 000 – and growing. Big-name artists, emerging musicians and reunited bands take to the massive stages to provide an eclectic mix of music, including rock, indie, hip-hop and electronica. Coachella’s other attraction is its visual art, including installations and sculptures.

Coachella was launched in 1999, six years after Pearl Jam performed to a crowd of 25 000 at the Polo Club, which had, until then, never hosted a music festival. Despite temperatures ranging from 5ºC to 42ºC, many festival-goers camp in an area next to the grounds. Organisers try to keep festival’s carbon footprint down, and a portion of the takings benefits the city of Indio and local charities.

These wines are not only sold here on the estate but also to a select number of wine merchants and fine-dining restaurants. With fingers being pointed at the financial sector for precipitating the crisis, it couldn’t have been easy.

“We were fortunate,” says Michael. “We have a robust regulatory regime in place, and very competent regulators – we were far better off than many other countries around the world.” But the fallout did hit South Africa, and as the CEO of one of the biggest banks in the country, Michael had his time cut out steering the bank through the storm.

A decision was taken to put a manager onto the farm but it didn’t really work out. “We decided that the only way to make this work would be for us to take control of the farm and progress our plans,” says Rose.

“That’s when we decided that I’d relocate here with the children.” And so, about five-and-a-half years ago, Rose and the children took up residence on the farm, and Michael commenced a gruelling schedule of commuting weekly between Johannesburg and the Cape. “It was hard but it was the only way to make it work,” he says. But above all else, Michael wants to create jobs. “What we need most in South Africa is jobs, and the focus of my activities in Montegray is to do just that: help with the initial funding for promising start-ups that will eventually lead to job creation,” he says. “The government’s role is to provide the infrastructure but it’s up to the private sector to create the jobs we need.”

I ask them whether the farm is profitable. Michael hesitates, and Rose answers. “If you discount the capital investment we’ve made in the farm, then we’re almost there,” she says. The sum, again, is undisclosed – and again I do not ask.

Beyond the farm itself, the regard for the staff who make the place tick emerges in discussion. Rose has implemented a program where each farm worker can farm a vegetable patch during the course of the day, and she has put in place laundry facilities on the farm for the staff to use while at work. “Our people are up early to get to work, and they usually get home late. This is just a small way to make their lives easier.”

Both Rose and Michael are very aware of the privileges they enjoy, and they are determined to put as much back into the community as they can.

The cellar is small by wine-making standards, with a 118-ton capacity, producing 4 000 cases of premium quality wine annually. The Bartinney range – which consists of a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux-style red blend (Elevage), a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc – includes only estate wines, made exclusively from grapes grown on the farm, and the current releases all sport four or four-and-a-half Platter stars. Sold locally by selected premium retailers, and available in selected restaurants, the wines are also exported.

The rare game business has quite literally exploded. It’s no wonder names such as Norman Adami and Johann Rupert are cashing in Words by David A Steynberg

“C

ape buffalo sold for R40-million.” Headlines such as this one, which broke last September, seem to be popping up with

increased frequency. In September 2012, R26-million was paid for a young buffalo bull. The numbers are staggering, even for the well-heeled.

But it’s not game farmers, per se, forking out the dough. It’s businesspeople such as SAB Miller chairman Norman Adami and richlist stalwart Johann Rupert. Shrewd and successful as they are, one has to wonder why anyone would invest the equivalent of a luxury home in livestock.

Perhaps it’s because a luxury home can’t necessarily offer you a return of between 28% and 42% on your original capital – and that’s a conservative estimate.

The size and growth of the game industry shows why: Vleissentraal, South Africa’s leading livestock auctioneering outfit, says the industry’s annual turnover has grown from R62-million to R864-million in the past decade.

But it’s the rare-game sector that’s attracting all the attention – specifically roan antelope, sable and buffalo.

Why do these animals fetch the prices they do? It’s simple, according to chartered accountant Morrison Smit who, together with a number of partners, has set up GameVest to open the door to private investors who do not necessarily want to trade their suits for John Deere khaki, but who do want a piece of the action.

“A disease-free buffalo cow would generally sell for about R1-million,” he says. “What does she give you? A calf every 16 months.”

So what’s the value of the calf? If it’s a heifer, she will within three years be worth R1-million. And if it’s a bull calf? Well, what do people pay for an ordinary buffalo bull not intended for breeding? Anywhere between R80 000 and R100 000, which you would allow to be hunted at a cost of between US$12 000 and US$15 000.

“If you have something that costs you R1-million and she only gives you bull calves, that’s a 10% return every 12 to 16 months,” says Smit.

“This is the base price.”

But if the cow calves 50/50 (one year a bull calf, one year a heifer calf), her return would be R100 000 the one year and R1-million the next, according to Smit.

“This works out to R500 000 a year on just the initial cow,” he says.

“But cows cannot calf without a bull. So you need to split the yield between the cow and the bull. This works out to R250 000 on a R1million cow, which is still 25% per year.” val de vie

It’s a single moment – but it might take many days to get that perfect shot. What has been my greatest challenge?

“Weather plays a big part in what we do. We’ve been known to wait for two years to get a shoot done just because the weather was not playing along. It’s out of our control, and it’s something we need to respect.

“My biggest challenge was shooting Ryan Sandes break the Fish River record. The year before the river flooded, so there was no way to attempt the record. The next year, we had to hike 85km with camera gear to find good places to shoot when Ryan was running. Because of time constraints, we ended hiking the route in under 15 hours, which was a huge hit on my ankles. They were so badly blistered that I couldn’t wear shoes for almost two months. Ryan went on to break the record, running the 90km route in 6h57m – and we got some insane footage and images.”

My passion for photography “Photography to me is a lifestyle, not really a job. Don’t get me wrong: it’s hard work with very long hours. Travelling around the world for Red Bull is great but it can get hectic, especially with all the gear.

“After all the hard work, opening a magazine or walking into a store and seeing the work in print is such a great feeling.

And knowing how that image was achieved makes it worthwhile.”

With the job we do, we need to be able to rely on our gear 100%. Working with Nikon is like being a part of a family they’re always there to help.

“My go-to camera is a Nikon D4 – a 24mm-70mm lens with Lexar memory cards. Each sport is shot with a specific lens used to get specific look. My gear ranges from a 16mm fish-eye lens to a 600mm lens with multiple bodies.”

Val de Vie Events had the privilege of working with Tanya van Graan and Kasper Kristoffersen on their wedding celebration. After Val de Vie Estate hosted their engagement shoot and pre-wedding celebration at the annual Pink Polo, we celebrated the start of their life as a married couple at La Residence in Franschhoek

How does it feel to be a Mrs? People ask me this question often but to be honest, not a lot has changed. Married life doesn’t happen overnight. I believe that it’s over time, living everyday life, that one experiences the difference. You are not alone any more – you have someone beside you to embrace all that life has to give.

Tell us about your dress.

It all began with the amazing Kobus Dippenaar. Growing up, I never dreamed about my wedding dress. Even if I had, I could have never envisioned what he created for me. I’ve known Kobus for many years, and I have always admired his craftsmanship and vision for creating spectacular dresses. I gave him creative freedom to design the dress, knowing he would understand exactly what would suit me as well as the wedding’s style. He made me two dresses for the day, which were both spectacular and unique. He said, “It’s your special day – why not have two?”

What was the planning process like?

Being an actress and a model, I never know where I will be working or what I will be working on a few months down the line. The idea of planning a wedding on my own was impossible. Even if I had the time, I would say having a wedding planner was the best investment.

We were so blessed to have Simone de Wet and the Val de Vie Events team as our wedding planners.

I didn’t have any pre-set ideas for our special day; all I knew was that if I saw it, I would know… And so our journey began. The decisions were so easy to make because Simone only gave us the best options and she really knew what we were looking for. I also didn’t want to be too involved with all the details. Seeing little things for the first time on the day was very special to me. I was only able to do that because I knew I had a great team in charge.

What made you decide on an intimate wedding?

Kasper and I both have very small families, which made an intimate wedding easy to have. But even more so, keeping it small was important to us. We wanted to share the day with our close friends and family – and, most importantly, with each other.

The decor, details and location of the wedding were stunning.

Who was involved in making everything happen?

With a dream team in place, it all came together perfectly, from decor and flowers by N Concepts and Designs and stationery by Secret Diary Designs to an amazing chef. We only went to look at one venue, La Residence in Franschhoek. We knew immediately that it was the perfect place for our special day, and from there the inspiration and ideas grew. We didn’t want to create a space; we wanted to embrace the amazing location as it already was. At La Residence, it was very easy to do because the interior and design are truly one of a kind.

Was this your dream wedding?

I never really had a dream for a wedding. It was more a great hope for the right groom. And today I can truly say I was blessed with both the perfect groom and a dream wedding!

Children are also treated to a variety of fun activities, with new surprises (including pony rides) at every market.

As a result of this partnership, men from our community have been appointed to assist with the event setup and operations management. New jobs were created, and individuals who were previously disadvantaged have now been empowered with a sense of duty and purpose.
