NO PLACE LIKE HOME
I don’t know if it is just me, but the first quarter of 2019 has been insanely busy with hardly a minute to catch one’s breath. With the first rainfall in April we are looking forward to further good winter rains that will assist our landscaping team to repair and upgrade areas of the Estate that suffered tremendously during the drought. It is thanks to the hard work on the ground by the team who were tasked with hand watering the verge trees that we made it through summer and the drought with minimal tree losses. ith good winter rains the province should emerge with healthy dam levels and recharged aquifers that will carry us through the summer months without the doom and gloom of “day zero” and drought. The Yard is fast becoming the central hub of the Estate. With a multitude of activities and services on offer it is drawing in residents both young and old. During the next couple of months, the first Val de Vie Evergreen residents will move into their retirement homes. The second phase of building has begun and is proceeding rapidly. In anticipation, our security department has been proactive, and biometric hand scanners have been installed
Once again Val de Vie Estate is a leader in utilising new technology as part of its perimeter security systems and its gratifying to know that other estates nationally are calling us to enquire about the access control system upgrade we undertook last year.
So, as we head into winter, we do not expect the pace to go into hibernation. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course has been hollow tined and a few renovations are being done in the Pearl Valley halfway house and kitchen to improve the functioning of the areas and speed of service. Until next time, sit back and enjoy this issue. GRAPEVINE 13

The Val de Vie Foundation provided hot meals to the young players and Caylix Sport assisted in the extremely professional set up of the tournament. have just returned home from a wonderful sunny Mauritius with eleven Pearl Valley Club Members. We were hosted at the beautiful Sugar Beach Hotel on the West Coast of the island at the first ever Steenberg vs Pearl Valley international interclub with both Directors of Golf making up the twelve playing members. Mauritius has become a world class golf destination and we will certainly continue to take groups over from Pearl Valley in future. The courses played over 6 days were Heritage, Anahita, lle Aux Cerfs and Tamarina, the format a Betterball Stableford with 5 out of the 6 pairs scores counting on each day. After being 17 points up on Steenberg after day one, we ended up winning the Interclub by 16 points in the end. A big thank you to the members who pioneered the first of many international interclub events. Recently our CEO and Founder, Martin Venter and Marketing Director and Shareholder, Ryk Neethling went over to the USA to meet with Jack Nicklaus. As many of you may be aware, our golf course is 18 years old this year and has reached the point where work on the course

is needed. We will not be changing the design but will be looking at doing bunker construction, resurfacing of greens, creating uniform grass varieties and a theme for the outof-play-areas. The infrastructure, irrigation system and main lines are still in great condition and will last us for many more years. The only upgrade to the irrigation system will be to replace the 38 control boxes which control the irrigation heads on the course. One further commitment is to stay true to our Jack Nicklaus Signature guidelines and have everything we do signed off by the Nicklaus Design team. I am very excited about the future and cannot wait to share more. Our past financial year was certainly a challenging one with the round numbers reducing by as many as 4000. A decision was made to revamp the golf shop in September of 2017. Knowing our market, we realised that we had to create many activations and experiences through the course for the year. A number of creative online sales initiatives were also launched which all played a huge part in the success of the shop.

IN THE INTEREST OF INTEGRITY “Being ethical means doing the right thing in the right way, even if it doesn’t seem like the best thing.” Wise words from Prof. Thuli Madonsela, former Public Protector of South Africa and referred to as ‘the keeper of the nation’s ethics’. hen Prof. Thuli Madonsela gets up on stage to speak, the audience pays attention. A leader by example and a servant of social justice, Prof. Thuli is humble and softspoken, combined with an air of utmost professionalism and courage. A question continuously posed to Prof. Thuli, is “what does the future look like for South Africa?” Her answer is simply: The future depends on what we make of it. “We have built our country on hope and the belief that things can be better. Collectively we have gone through many low points as a nation, but because of leadership our country has never reached proverbial ‘rock bottom”, remarks Prof. Thuli. “But don’t be fooled, we often think that leaders are only good people that take other people to a good place, which we have seen is not the case. Also keep in mind that no leader, good or bad, ever executes alone.” According to Prof. Thuli the answer for our country lies in supporting the type of leadership that works in difficult and uncertain times.
32 GRAPEVINE
Is there anything that we can do to change things? “Yes”, she answers, “a lot is being done and can still be done. Firstly, through economic inclusion and growth – the one is dependant on the other – we can institute change. If you are in any way able to bring change, then do it. Growth is always driven by inclusiveness. Secondly, through acting with integrity.” She shared some thoughts on arguments for a new law that rewards whistle blowers: “In the US, whistleblower compensation is the cornerstone of a blossoming industry. What is done from a sense of duty should always be rewarded” Prof. Thuli believes that going forward, our greatest challenge as a nation will be social justice: “Remember that every part of this world has its own problems. Our focus on purpose and righteousness will take us forward.” The poem ‘The Cold Within’ by James Patrick Kinney formed the basis of her talk and was used as an analogyfor the future we hope for for our country.

THE COLD WITHIN Six humans trapped by happenstance In bleak and bitter cold Each one possessed a stick of wood Or so the story’s told.
Pictured below: Anja Taschner from Ludwig’s Roses presented Prof. Thuli with a rose named after her that will be available from leading garden centers soon. On Anja’s right is Pieter Swart from Stellenbosch University.
Their dying fire in need of logs The first one held hers back For of the faces around the fire She noticed one was black. The next man looking ‘cross the way Saw one not of his church And could not bring himself to give The fire his stick of birch. The third one sat in tattered clothes, He gave his coat a hitch Why should his log be put to use To warm the idle rich? The rich man just sat back and thought Of the wealth he had in store And how to keep what he had earned From the lazy, shiftless poor. The black man’s face bespoke revenge As the fire passed from his sight, For all he saw in his stick of wood Was a chance to spite the white. The last man of this forlorn group Did nought except for gain, Giving only to those who gave Was how he played the game. Their logs held tight in death’s still hands Was proof of human sin, They did not die from the cold without They died from the cold within. ~ James Patrick Kinney

INVESTING OFFSHORE Benefits of global diversification
The core objectives of offshore exposure in an investment portfolio is diversification (of asset allocation), to broaden investment opportunities, hedge against political and economic risk in South Africa and rand depreciation. Offshore exposure is fundamental to attain the level of capital growth required according to the investors’ risk profile. Autus strives to take the apprehension away from our clients with regards to investing offshore. Trying to navigate the turbulent waters of offshore investing requires knowledge and resources of which Autus can assist with various solutions. The Autus Global Equity Fund was established under the Sanlam Universal Funds plc, Ireland and is managed locally by Autus Fund Managers (Pty) Ltd, an authorised financial services provider. The fund offers investment options in rand and international currencies. The underlying portfolio invest primarily in equity securities. The top holdings include Microsoft, Visa, Mastercard, Amazon, Alibaba, Ping-An Insurance, Apple and Tencent Holdings. INVESTING IN SOUTH AFRICA The most simple and cost-effective route to acquire offshore exposure is to invest in a local currency offshore unit trust (e.g. Autus Prime Global Equity Feeder Fund) on a local platform operated by a recognized and reputable provider. This means that your investment and currency exposure is foreign while you invest in a rand-denominated instrument. The advantages of this option include lower initial investment requirements and fewer administrative processes. Following this route, an investor’s annual offshore allowance will not be utilized, which means that a tax clearance from SARS is not required. INVESTING ABROAD It is possible to invest directly from a foreign bank account or by utilizing your foreign currency allowance of up to R11 million per year by investing in an offshore unit trust (e.g. the Autus Global Equity Fund which is denominated in US dollars and domiciled in Ireland). Your

investment will remain in an offshore account. However, should you wish to invest less than R1 million per annum, South Africans can make use of their annual discretionary allowance (which includes: travel allowance, offshore credit card swipes, gifts, alimony and foreign investment allowance). In doing so, you will not be required to have a valid TCC but will still need to register the investment with the South African Reserve Bank. Offshore investments form part of your estate and will be liable for estate duty in South Africa and the jurisdiction in which you invest. A separate will must be set up for offshore investments – the winding up of your estate is subject to the applicable country’s legislation. RSA residents are taxed on worldwide income (offshore profits must be declared in your annual tax return and provisional tax must be paid), subject to double taxation and unilateral exemptions. Companies pay tax in the country where they are managed, or the ownership lies. For trusts, this depends on where they are registered or where the trustees reside. A consultation with your wealth advisor, pertaining your decision in to which of the two funds would be appropriate to invest in, would consequently depend primarily on the financial and tax planning considerations. WELLNESS
GET OUT OF YOUR SLUMP Val de Vie Estate resident Jan-Hendrik Swiegers earlier this year decided to invest in himself and change his life by making use of the wellness resources available on his doorstep. Words by The Grapevine Team
“I
used to suffer from the worst headaches. To the point where I became frustrated because I was not functioning optimally. I was constantly drinking pain killers, spending thousands of rands on scans and doctors’ opinions, but nothing helped.” Jan-Hendrik is well-known on the Estate as owner of VanderBilt Construction, property developer, capturer of incredible Estate photographs, musician and the man behind the music video of his beloved hometown Murraysburg. With his jovial personality, Jan-Hendrik was a friendly, regular face at events, in Fleet coffee roastery and at social gatherings. The one place where you would not have seen JH (as he is sometimes called) was in the gym.
52 GRAPEVINE
“My good friend Hal Luscombe invited me to a talk at The Yard gym with James Lawrence, also known as the ‘Iron Cowboy.’ I was so impressed by James’ superhuman physical accomplishments and completing 50 IronMan events, in 50 States in America, over 50 consecutive days. But what really grabbed my full attention was when James looked straight into my eyes and said to me that anyone could do what he had done, and that achieving greatness was all in the mind.” Jan-Hendrik recounts there were numerous times before where he would take up cycling for a while, or go for a few runs, only to give up every time and revert to his old habits. But on this day, something changed. “Hal said to me after the talk that he could not comprehend why a driven and motivated man such as myself wasn’t taking better care of himself.
WELLNESS
He challenged me right there and then to not walk away once again from a healthy lifestyle, but to make a commitment. Coincidentally, I met John McGrath (co-owner and high performance coach at The Yard FitLife gym) for the first time that day. I have not looked back since.” Regular attendance of Fit45 classes, a bit of running and cycling over weekends, an ice-cold swim every morning, intermittent fasting, breathing exercises and cutting out sugar and refined carbs, have resulted in Jan-Hendrik’s weight loss of 12kg in 8 weeks, and a renewed and enlightened mindset. “My life has completely changed, I am no longer on autopilot and my headaches are something of the past. I feel like a new person, am able to think clearly, to focus and to be present in the moment. I have taken control of my life by growing out of my comfort zones. I no longer allow my brain to give instructions to my body, because my brain knows my weak spots – telling me it’s too cold to swim, I’m too tired, I deserve to lie-in….I now start my day consciously with a victory by doing things that
normally would have made me uncomfortable.” Jan-Hendrik’s journey will be shared on our community social media pages, as motivation to our residents to invest in their own well-being.
Jan-Hendrik on training with John McGrath: “There are so many benefits I am experiencing working with John. He is not just a trainer, he has made a real difference in my life. He sees in detail what everyone that walks into his gym is going through – he understands their situations, wants to help them, he inspires everyone. He is aware and present in the moment. I could not have asked for a better inspirational coach and athlete to get me into this space in my life.”

TURN OVER A NEW LEAF Winter comes in many disguises. In the Highveld and Karoo, crisp, clear days crackling with frost are in stark contrast with the blustery storms and heavy rains sweeping over the southernmost part of Africa. Here in the Cape region we are grateful for the cold fronts making their way inland and filling our dams. Winter is a time when outdoor living is confined to enclosed patios or warm, sheltered corners of the garden. Words by Ruan du Plessis

inter is the season when shapes and textures become as important as colour. Bare branches and bark against a grey
sky backdrop, rocky stone slopes and the contours of lawns and paths command attention, while garden features such as birdbaths, an urn or a bench, stand out in sharper focus. Dark green foliage adds a touch of softness and bright berries and winter flowers contribute their colours to a season which is far from sombre and uninteresting. And this brings us to a wonderful group of
each stem. Trim your plants just after the flowers have faded and before they start putting out new growth. Never cut back into old wood or where there are no healthy green leaves. Fynbos have very sensitive root systems, and is one of the reason they can’t be bought in large containers from nurseries. If there are weeds around your plants, it is advisable to remove the weeds with as little disturbance to the soil as possible.
plants we are all very familiar with namely ‘Fynbos’. Fynbos is the name given to the hard leaved shrublands and heathlands found in the coastal plains and mountains of the South Western and Southern Cape of South Africa. The name is derived from the Dutch word ‘fijnbosch’ meaning fine leaved bush. This group of plants include but is not limited to, Protea, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Erica and Elegia. What makes these plants even more special is that Fynbos is one of the world’s six Floral Kingdoms. It is the smallest, but boasts the richest per unit of area. Winter is the best time to plant any new Fynbos. This will allow the plants to settle during the cooler months of the year as well as get sufficient water in the form of our winter rains. Be very wary of adding any phosphates or bonemeal and avoid rich composts. Less is more in this case. When it comes to pruning your aim is for well-formed and bushy plants. To achieve this, I would suggest pruning stems of between 30-40cm leaving four or five leave nodes on

Yellowing leaves are symptomatic of a lack of iron especially in sandy soils with a high pH. Apply iron chelate as a spray or drench every two weeks until the symptoms disappear. For fungal problems, use Dithane WP or Bravo 720. Just remember that you get a few Leucadendron that actually turns yellow in Winter. They will obviously not need any treatment. Enjoy the rest of our glorious winter and take a chance on some Fynbos plants. They make wonderful additions to any garden. Marcus Tullius Cicero once said that, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” His words still ring true 2000 years later. Happy gardening!

The en-suite guest bedroom is located on the ground floor offering visitors, or possibly a teenager, ample space to relax. The two-tone kitchen is beautifully appointed with soft closing doors, a central island and Miele appliances. Full length glass doors from the dining area recess in their entirety into the walls creating the most seamless frame to
the outside space. On the deck you will find the swimming pool and braai from which sundowners must be incredible. A beautiful staircase invites you to the first floor where you will find an attractive landing with sliding doors onto a balcony which also frames ‘Simon’ on his mountain. The spacious master bedroom suite offers quadruple aspect windows with a splendid en-suite bathroom whilst two further en-suite bedrooms complete the first floor. As one would expect further benefits include a scullery, cloakroom, drying yard, driveway and a double garage. The impressive furniture and paintings in this home are included in the price. HIPPITY HOPPITY The Easter bunny and KINDER JOY® surprised our young residents just before Easter! Words by The Grapevine Team
1
50 Children from as young as two years old embarked on a journey through the Estate in search of Easter eggs on Thursday 18 April 2019.
Starting from the L’Huguenot Wine Cellar, each child received an Easter Egg Hunting box with a treat from KINDER JOY® Eggs in the box. The younger kids aged between 2 and 5 years old received a 5 minute head start while the older children awaited with great excitement.
The Easter Bunny handed out KINDER JOY® Eggs and a photo corner was set up to capture the special moment. In addition to the surprise treats the children received, KINDER JOY® toys engaged kids through assembly, imagination, and interaction in order to extend the fun of playing beyond the initial excitement of discovering the toy. The afternoon ended with smiles and joy as each child left with their hunting box, ready to share special Easter memories and treats.
The route ended on the grass at Fleet Coffee Roastery where a jumping castle and white balloons created a joyful atmosphere.

SECURITY REPORT
SECURITY REPORT Winter has arrived, and all eyes are on the weatherman for predictions of rain and more rain regardless of the difficulties experienced by our security guards with specific tasks exposing them to the full force of the Cape Winter. Words by Louis de Jager, Val de Vie Estate Risk Manager
S
pare a thought for our security personnel, especially during cold and wet winter’s days and nights. From early June we experience the onset of snake hibernation and our security personnel can take a break from catching and relocating these necessary rodent-managing albeit bothersome residents. It’s my privilege to serve you and maintain that this Estate is the benchmark for security operations and technical and electronic innovation and advancement. We are the leaders in our field and proud of it. This is without comparison the most diverse and taxing security environment on a multitude of fronts that I have ever worked on in my 25 years in the private sector. Episodes of load shedding darkened a few days for us over the past couple of months. Regardless of surge protectors, UPS devices and other checks and balances, even
sophisticated electronics such as ours take a beating when load shedding kicks in, often exacerbated by shortages of critical spares in the Western Cape. Critical spares are an extremely high priority and a vast inventory to have available at all time. An extensive operational security contingency plan for the foreseeable future, dovetailed with just as an extensive electronic security plan, has been developed to ensure we remain on top of our game and do not drop the ball when possible challenges come our way. The access control boom project between Pearl Valley and Val de Vie is well under way and operational and I trust this will enable us to manage the thousands of daily onsite contractors even more effectively. The Security Department wishes you a wonderful rain filled winter while we look after your best interests.
