We are once again exhilarated to present the 2nd ¡VAMOS! Festival - a celebration of all that’s wild and wonderful in the world of Latin and Lusophone cultures (that is, Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures). Taking place every 2 years in NewcastleGateshead and further afield, this year we are back from 11th-20th July 2008. Over 10 action-packed days we’ve got UK premieres, exclusives and ¡VAMOS! commissions involving hundred’s of artists and partners from the region and beyond. Delve inside this programme to find out more about the vibrant visual arts, film, world-class dance and music performance, and mouthwatering food events we’ve got going on. An extra shout goes out for the special BIG DANCE event... Taking place on Baltic Square, Saturday 12th July 2008 all ages will be united under one groove of the... World’s Biggest Salsa! To read more go to page 6, or to learn this special routine sign up online at www.vamosfestival.com, or come along at 10.30am on the day! It’s free ‘n’ fun for all! We’d also like to dedicate ¡VAMOS! Festival 2008 to the memory of Dr. Vanessa Knights who was integral to the success of ¡VAMOS! 2006. Her influence and passion is sorely missed and we hope we are able to honour her memory from this year’s festival and beyond. We are extremely grateful for the faith and support of culture10 and Newcastle Gateshead Initiative and the financial support of Newcastle City Council, Gateshead Council and CETL. Cadencia hail from the dusty and unforgettably beautiful climes of Seville, Spain. Part of an ever-changing ‘Nuevo Flamenco’ movement, they combine the flamenco tradition with intoxicating elements of Middle Eastern, Latin and Celtic music. With guitar, flutes, djembe and searing vocals they meld together a sound that is both modern and personal. They have toured far and wide and we are thrilled to present their UK debut. With kind support from Instituto Cervantes Manchester
UK PREMIERE
Each of these four young New York-based musicians is pursuing an impressive solo and chamber music career in her own right. Between them they have a stunning array of recordings, awards, concerto and chamber music appearances under their belts. Together they are among the hottest exponents of the new classical quartet, champions of Latin American music and famed for their creative collaborations, most recently with our own Tyneside-based Bolivian Agustín Fernández. ¡VAMOS! is proud to be associated with CETL at Newcastle and Durham Universities for the workshop and the première of new works by young North East composers. NONAME returns to The Tyne for what’s rumoured to be the last of those infamous outdoor street parties, but this time with a one-off ¡VAMOS! twist. Featuring Tetine, DJ Vamanos, Electro Flamenko (DJ set), Notorious D.A.V.E and Name (¡VAMOS! Ableton set)
With the explosion and mainstream acceptance and influence of ‘Baille Funk’ music, Tetine may at first appear to be the latest addition to a growing Brasilian scene inclusing CSS and Bonde do Role but have infact been part of its beginnings. They have trodden an unusual path taking in art, music, and installations and performed at the likes of the Barbican in London, Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and Sonar (Barcelona). This is their debut North East performance. DJ Vamanos writes one of the best english language music blogs your’ll find if you want to discover the latest sounds coming out of South America. (www.ghettobassquake.com). So on the night he’s sure to surprise! As part of the Electro Flamenko crew Chesco has harboured many beats and as part of Electro Flamenko tonight he plays a rare DJ set. A festival highlight featuring a special performance of Sergio Camacho’s opera ‘Beyond the Milestone’, by theatre company Teatro de Nieve. A magic story about love, loss, jealousy and betrayal, ‘Beyond the Milestone’ is a reinvention of the traditional Spanish Zarzuela, a musical genre that combines spoken dialogue with songs. Teatro de Nieve has taken this tradition further by creating a unique combination of poetry, music, drama, live orchestra, contemporary dance and visual art. ‘Beyond the Milestone’ is a powerful and visionary production and unlike anything you have seen so far.

An NORTHERN influential visual artist, Peter Kennard, with his photo-montage STAGE: 6.00PM | £8.00 ADVANCE. based practice, has delivered some of the definitive images of the time from the CND movement and (with relevance to ¡VAMOS!) General Pinochets coup in Chile in 1973. Presented in the North East for the first time in 30 years, this collection will be on show for one night within the Star and Shadow with Peter introducing the work. ’In its form and power, Peter Kennard’s art ranks among the most important of the late twentieth century. It is important because it breaks the consensual silence surrounding the most urgent issues of the day. His pictures brilliantly evoke the faces that cry out from the silent war.’ John Pilger, The Guardian
Self taught photographer Jason P. Howe has worked in Lebanon, Iraq and is currently based in Afghanistan. A regular visitor to Latin America, he has worked in 18 countries in the region: documenting the ongoing conflict in Colombia has been a long term project. Jason’s exploration of FARC, the AUC (right wing militia), the displaced and coca trade is unnerving in its closeness to the subjects. The first manifestation of this ongoing work ‘Colombia - Between the Lines’ will be presented at ¡VAMOS! as a unique installation with the just published book available to buy during the festival. Colombian film maker Marc de Beaufort’s ‘The Private Archives of Pablo Escobar’ straddles both the pop and political with this revealing documentary portrait of a complex man who grew freakishly rich and powerful from the drug trade. The afternoon includes a welcome return visit by Brasilian singer Monica Vasconcelos - a great hit at the 2008 Gateshead International Jazz Festival - an up tempo set from Alex Wilson and his Salsa Orchestra, the North East premiere of the newly formed Baghdaddies Big Band (whom we are sure for this occasion will develop some Latin touches!) and will conclude with a 90 minute reggae sequence in association with Boss Sounds featuring Earl 16, one of the greats of Jamaican music, the superb roots singer and voice of Dreadzone, plus Prince Malachi, making his debut in Gateshead, whom many regard as the future of UK reggae. 2pm - 6pm, free
Winner of the 2008 BBC World Music Award in the Newcomer category, singer Mayra Andrade is the new Cape Verde diva, following in the footsteps of Cesariá Evora. Born of Cape Verdean parents in Cuba, Mayra spent part of her childhood in Angola, Senegal and Germany and is now resident in Paris. Her songs, mainly sung in Cape Verdean Creole, paint a beguiling picture of island life served with generous portions of mouth-watering melodies and delicious grooves. Performing with her Brasilian band, Mayra is bound to charm the audience out of their seats.
Hailed as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar’, award-winning Italian guitarist Antonio Forcione is considered one of the most charismatic and inventive performers to come out of Europe in recent years. He breaks the mould of most conventional, popular guitar sounds be it in the field of jazz, Spanish, African, Brasilian or improvised music. International tours have brought high critical acclaim from as far as Australia and Hong Kong to Russia, the Caribbean, USA and all over Europe.
