We are very pleased to present the third ¡VAMOS! Festival - the North East region’s celebration of all that’s wild and wonderful in the world of Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures. ¡VAMOS! takes place every two years in NewcastleGateshead and further afield and this year we return 2nd-11th July 2010. Working with many partners over the ten days we’ve got UK and regional premieres, exclusive performances and commissions all involving hundreds of artists and collaborators from the region and beyond. As in 2008, we’d like to dedicate the 2010 festival to the memory of Dr. Vanessa Knights who was integral to the establishment and success of ¡VAMOS! 2006. Transtango is a unique music, film and dance performance inspired by urban encounters. An enticing blend of contemporary tango and jazz cooked up by internationally renowned North East based composer Tim Garland along with Marcelo Nisinman who is one of Argentina’s most exciting musical talents. Transtango also includes City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s lead Cello Eduardo Vassallo as well as Sola Akingbola, Jamiroquai’s percussionist, reconnecting tango with its deep African roots. Tango is the inspiration, acting as a classic example of how diverse influences from Africa, Europe and South America were blended together in the maelstrom of late 19th century Buenos Aires to form a new hybrid musical form. Its raw music, full of energy and passion came in from the outer margins of society and went on to capture the imagination of the world. Centred on a series of interviews with ‘city dreamers’, Transtango transplants this idea into today’s UK cities streets. Through music, dance, film and occasional snippets of the spoken word we explore the realities and fantasies of people who have settled in urban spaces from all corners of the world to try and achieve their dreams. An electrifying dance and music performance of authentic Afro Peruvian rhythms. ChinchivĂ is the name of a drink that African slaves in the valley of El Carmen, Peru, created by mixing flavours and ingredients of the African, Spanish and the indigenous traditions. Grupo ChinchivĂ based in Paris, live up to the name by fusing melodies and instruments of Andean and European descent to turn into their own contemporary music. They bring the raw energy, dance and excitement of Afro Peruvian music, bound together by the ancient sounds that migrated and evolved via slavery worldwide. They combine the unique sounds of the Peruvian cajon with other traditional percussive instruments like the guiro, the jawbone, Caribbean maracas, bongos and conga and finally the chilling sound of the Andean violin (which was appropriated by Afro Peruvian peasants). The rythms of the Lando and Festejo merge with reggae and Latin jazz to produce a complex and contagious array of rhythms and sounds. A free family friendly day of live music, dance, stalls, food and fun! Instantly established as a highlight of the festival in 2006 and 2008 with huge crowds, the ¡VAMOS! outdoor picnic returns to bring a carnival atmosphere to Saltwell Park in Gateshead! Featuring sumptious music all the way from Argentina via evocative Tango Gypsy trio Zingaros (www.zingaros.com.ar) with their North East debut, a 2nd festival outing for Afro-Peruvian’s Chinchiví as well as enegetic dance and a special carnival from North East collective Rumba NE and Nanette de Jong and her salsa band. Finally a special rare performance by ¡VAMOS! co-conspirator Patricia Oliart and Paco Bethencourt and his Flamencos del Norte group playing Bossa and Flamenco. Quite possibly the last Tyne party ever. A worthy headlining act to what is an end of an era… Octa Push are made up of two Portuguese brothers Dizzycutter and Mushug who came together after being challenged to perform live together by a Lisbon promoter. Making their vinyl debut in summer 2009 they have since featured on the recent critically lauded Fabric compilation Elevator Music Vol. 1, provided mixes for Fact magazine, appeared at Sonar and Glade Festival and count Radiohead’s Thom Yorke as one of their fans. Octa Push perform an exclusive live set at ¡VAMOS! providing a bass heavy, ragga and UK Funky inspired sound seen through a Portuguese prism. Ably providing back-up, DJ Vamanos delivered an epic set at ¡VAMOS! 2008 and has since gone from strength to strength DJing all over the world as part of the Radio Clit / Secousse crew. Latin Fever, Hall One, 3pm Performed and choreographed by Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova from the BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, Latin Fever returns for a second UK tour. They will be joined by four leading Latin American dancing duos for a breathtaking voyage. The glamorous journey begins with an explosion of Brazilian rhythms at the Carnival in Rio, before the audience is transported to the clubs of Buenos Aires to be seduced by the passion of the tango. Cuba beckons with the cha-cha-cha and rumba, and then it’s time to boogie to the American dance halls of the 1920s for the swing and jitterbug. The voyage continues in Spain where the passion and drama of the bullring is brought to life in the glorious paso doblè. A sensational live Latin band performs much-loved songs including the sultry ‘Fever’, the sizzling ‘Bésame Mucho’, and the hip-wiggling ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca’. “This is Latin reconceived for the stage, not just happening on it.” The Independent Tickets: A/B/C/D: £39.50 E: £14 El Tren Fantasma, Tyneside Cinema, 4pm As Mexico emerged from the violence of the Revolution in the 1920s, Mexican film production remained sporadic and in disarray. During this period, Gabriel García Moreno was among a handful filmmakers struggling against the odds to establish regional film industries. El Tren Fantasma is the second of three silent features that he produced independently in Orizaba. As do his other films, this crime thriller displays the influence of popular Hollywood action genres, and the director’s masterful knowledge of silent film technique. It features leading man Carlos Villatoro as Adolfo Mariel, an engineer dedicated to foiling a gang of notorious train thieves. Screening includes live musical accompaniment. Supported by

A very special show ‘Amor y Luz’ curated by The Biscuit Factory of Latin and Lusophone talent and art forms from North East and international artists. An inspiring night at Newcastle University’s Culture Lab focused on dance. This night features an exclusive and intimate brand new performance by members of the Contemporánea De Cuba (Cuba). Deftly referencing their Afro Cuban roots, Cuban stylings and distinct European and New York influences, DCC are one of the most exciting dance companies in the world right now. There are limited numbers for this event so we recommend early booking. After the short performance their will be Q+A session with members of the company and artistic director Miguel Iglesias Ferrer chaired by Liv Lorent (Artistic Director of balletLORENT). Following the live dance performance there will be a special film screening of Only When I Dance (Beadie Finzi, 78 mins, 2009. Portuguese with English subtitles), itself an inspiring true tale of prodigious talent and the fine line between success and failure. Eighteen-year-old Irlan grew up in Rio de Janeiro’s most violent favela, the Complexo do Alemão. Millions of Colombians are displaced due to economics and the difficult circumstances at home as a result of war, drug-trafficking and international politics. Daniela, her Mother and Grandmother came to Britain as asylum seekers and we meet them at the point when they receive their passports stamped with their permits to stay. This documentary by shows them making London their home, and as members of a close-knit Colombian community, focusing on a generation of Latin children being raised in Britain.

For 20 years, a subculture emerged in Brazil under society’s radar. ‘Baile Funk’ or ‘Funk Carioca’ is an energetic, underground music from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. It’s fast, heavy and violent like the city itself and has its own language, style and heroes. Honest lyrics in Brazilian slang talk about aspects of life in Rio’s favelas; sex, love, poverty, violence, pride and aspirations, giving this once marginalized community a voice. Produced by Diplo, this documentary features interviews with some of the ‘Baile Funk’ movement’s leading DJs and MCs; DJ Marlboro (who Djed at ¡VAMOS! 2006) and Sany Pitbull give an insight into the subculture itself. Baile Funk has since exploded out of the favelas and onto the world’s music scene.
A special exhibition hosted by the North East Brazilian Community. showing paintings, photography, ceramics, films and installations that tackle environmental issues and ways of using recycled materials in fine art. Artists will give workshops on how to use these materials in art and crafts. The costumes made will be used at the Stockton International Riverside Festival. On the night there will also be music by Dance for the King Band, Capoeira by Filhos de Bimba and Brazilian food and drinks.

This solo is extracted from balletLORENT’s successful 2008/09 nationwide tour of Designer Body. A dancer gracefully balances on a revolving plinth, losing fragments of artifice as she turns. After 20 minutes, over 300 spins and a relinquishing of design and disguise, she is revealed in her natural state; unadorned and vulnerable. Dextro is the alias for Ewan Mackenzie, who under this guise creates dense and symphonic electronic/acoustic compositions that manage to feel both epic and tender. For this event Ewan will perform a live reinterpretation of his recently released ‘Ring Circle’ 12” which features remixes from Alias (Anticon) and The Village Orchestra amongst others. Barbatuque are a group who blend acapella, rythmical and physical performance creating a unique sound that has undeniable Brazilian roots. There will be an additional performance from Brazil, artists TBC. DJs will play at both locations with live mixing between the two. A scriptwriting project as part of the Theatre Royal Newcastle’s Seconds Out initiative, young people have worked with a Cuban poet to develop scripts about difficult issues facing them. The top three have been selected to be performed as radio plays and broadcast as part of ¡VAMOS! Following this the best of the three will be transformed into a stage play for Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011. Approaching the closing weekend of the festival, come along and enjoy Hot Foot - a lively dance workshop. Presented by Monica Gracia a professional dancer from Colombia you’ll learn amazing movements, see a special performance by her and enjoy Salsa - Colombian style! (Salsa Amor will follow on from 7pm till midnight). A family friendly Salsa Charity evening hosted by one of the first Salsa based promoters in the North East. Malu Velez was instrumental in establishing the salsa nights at both the Jazz Cafe and the Black Swan weekly events. For ¡VAMOS! she hosts one of her special food and music parties at The Cornerhouse. Expect sumptious home made Colombian cuisine as well as a relaxed dance class afterwards, DJs and dancing to end. There is limited capacity for this one so book early! All of the evening’s profits will go towards helping people in Colombia, specifically Linna Maria Alvarado (a sufferer of cerebral palsy), and displaced people living on the outskirts of Bogotá, Colombia’s captial.

Lucha Libre (Mexican Wrestling by masked wrestlers) is a cultural institution in working class Mexico. For one night only, Byker too will be home to some live Mexican Wrestling (although admittedly these guys are Bulgarian being as it’s very hard to find Mexican wrestlers in the UK!). As well as the live theatrical fisticuffs there is live music from Surf Rock heroes Senor Beatnik and The Coyotemen and finally not forgetting two Mexican Wrestling films Santo vs the Martians and Los Campeones. Santo vs the Martians Mexico, 1966, 85 mins. Director: Alfredo B. Crevenna. Spanish with English subtitles Earthlings refusing to stop nuclear testing, so Martians threaten to disintegrate everyone on Earth. To teach humanity a lesson, they have decided to first destroy a pacifist nation: Mexico. Three-eyed aliens kidnap several earthlings while they figure out how to eliminate the only man who can stop them: Santo, the Man with the Silver Mask. In an effort to stop the invaders, our hero manages to snatch a Martian belt - a teleporting device that will allow him to sneak aboard the alien ship where his final confrontation with the invaders takes place.

Los Campeones de La Lucha Libre Mexico, 2008, 76 mins. Director: Eddie Mort A mysterious stranger leaves his Mexican village to seek help from an impending attack by an equally mysterious horde. He finds a gifted young Mexican wrestler - or luchador Dragon Rojo JR, who sees a chance to live up to the legacy of his famous father. Inspired by the golden age of Lucha Libre, he gathers a team of his own but as they work together, a surprise lies in store - the village they have been asked to defend is not exactly what it seems…
In 2006 Nigel Craig Dempster Ritchie otherwise known by most as NC, luckily bought a standby return ticket to Havana for £89. What followed was five weeks of revelation for him as he instantly fell in love with the island, it’s people and their infectious outlook to life. Staying with a Cuban family for much of his time, NC photographed everything he saw and the people he met and in the process captured some of the hedonism that passed his way. The images are raw with some combining accidental double exposures adding to abstracted, distant feel. Exhibition dates: 11th July-1st August.

After the daytime fun at Tynemouth Priory head over to Crusoes for the official closing party! In 2008 this was one of the festival highlights! This time we are very proud to close ¡VAMOS! 2010 with an exclusive set from DJ Panko of Ojos de Brujo fame. From Barcelona and with a deep love of flamenco, Panko has explored and contributed to countless musical projects influenced by punk, rumba, funk, North African rhythms and psychedelia over many years. Eventually he became part of what grew into Ojos de Brujo and since then has blossomed further as the band’s DJ, remixer as well as bassist (on occasion). Well known and loved for his sprawling, vibrant and fun DJ sets he is the perfect guest for our closing night! Alongside Panko we’ve also got live music from Paco Bethencourt, and further DJ sets from Doble V and Alx Alfaro. There will also be a special tapas menu, cocktails and sangria to buy so come down to a wonderful location and a great way to end the ¡VAMOS! vibes...

Festival and to mark the centenary of the Mexican Revolution, the Tyneside Cinema will be screening three films that deal with the revolution in very different ways.
