Hello! ¡Olá! ¡Hola!
Welcome to the 8th edition of ¡VAMOS! Festival a celebration of Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures through all art forms. For 2013 we are pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Newcastle University which will allow ¡VAMOS! to grow and develop exciting projects for future years. As a highlight of ¡VAMOS! 2013 read on... Our public engagement programmes return with the Tyne Carnival bigger than ever and with partnerships with the High Bridge Festival and UK Centre for Carnival Arts. Our theme is Kings and Queens and we invite everyone to celebrate their vision of what it means to be one. Whether carnival style, regal or comedy inspired this is your chance to transform yourself and your surroundings! The winner of the best King and Queen will be announced on the day at a daytime programme of music and food on Highbridge.
The Peña Flamenca project is back at Dance City and features performances and workshops by Chilean / Spanish company La Típica. With support from Arts Council England we continue our partnership with curator Pablo León de la Barra with a commission onto the Theatre Royal with Chilean artist Felipe Mujica, as well as a secretly located artwork by Brazilian artist Derlon. We also show striking work by Colombian artist Juan Pablo Echeverri at mima. ¡VAMOS! takes up a mini residency at Cluny 2 featuring shows with festival openers Los Chinches plus Morgan Szymanski and Alx Alfaro as well as further performances by Los Independientes del Vallenato, Leo Blanco, Classico Latino and the award winning Hannabiell & Midnight Blue amongst others. This year we launch a special ¡VAMOS! Film Season working in partnership Tyneside Cinema, Side Cinema and Star and Shadow Cinema and supported by BFI.
Our talks series features world renowned scholars such as Paul Preston and Serge Gruzinski, together with research “fresh from the field”. Free film screenings at The Stand are back too! On the final week-end we welcome the Mexican Wrestlers from ¡VAMOS! 2010 with a huge event at the Boiler Shop featuring Latin American food stalls, decorations, children’s games, Djs and of course wrestling battles between the opposing forces of good and evil! We would like to give heartfelt thanks to all our funders and partners for continuing to support ¡VAMOS! - in particular Arts Council England, North East, Newcastle University and the British Film Institute. Finally muchas gracias for you the audience who have continued to celebrate, inspire and take part! Nikolas Barrera and Patricia Oliart ¡VAMOS! Co-Directors
