hello! ¡Olá! ¡Hola!
Welcome to the 7th edition of ¡VAMOS! - the North East’s celebration of Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures. For summer 2012 it lasts 6 weeks, taking place from 1st June - 15th July 2012. This year ¡VAMOS! Festival fully embraces the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad with a series of exclusive artist commissions by world-class Latin American artists. Alongside these works we have a special Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibition at The Bowes Museum, brand new partnerships, the return of the Tyne Carnival and Peña Flamenca projects, a dedicated talks programme, free cinema screenings and a new Summerhill Picnic. The festival will officially launch at Newcastle University with special music performances, food and the official unveiling of a ¡VAMOS! Photography Exhibition re-visiting the many, many amazing performances, contributions and memories captured since the festival launched in 2006. We would like to sincerely thank all our funders and close partners for their faith and support of the ¡VAMOS! initiative - in particular Arts Council England, North East and Newcastle University. Finally, muchas gracias to you the audience who make the festival what it is every year! Nikolas Barrera and Patricia Oliart - ¡VAMOS! Co-Directors

LaTetaAsustada(milkofSorrow)
Director Claudia Llosa, 2009, 95 mins, Spain/Peru Introduced by Dr. Yarí Pérez Marín from Durham university, this film is about Fausta, a young woman affected by an illness passed from mother to child by Peruvian women who were raped or abused during those two terrible decades of crude violence. While those days are long gone, Fausta stands as a living reminder of the horror that once plagued her country, her malady a deep-rooted fear that stripped the young innocent of her soul.

UK PREMIERE
in partnership with
A special commission with music artist Arto Lindsay as part of a first time partnership with BRASS: Durham International Festival. Arto Lindsay is an American artist, musician and composer who has worked with the likes of Jean Michel Basquiat and Matthew Barney. As a child of US missionary parents Arto grew up in Brazil absorbing the music and culture. Back in the US as a young man, he became immersed in the punk/post punk/no wave scene forming and contributing with the likes of DNA, Ambitious Lovers and The Lounge Lizards... For ¡VAMOS! and BRASS he will be staging one of his carnival procession projects that have been presented at the Venice Biennale, in New York, Frankfurt and Berlin. Working with the Ferryhill Town Band in partnership with Hannabiell Sanders and TIN Arts, as part of Big Dance, Arto’s carnival vision takes to the water with a riverside boat procession! ! Starting at The Boathouse, Elvet Bridge travelling along the River Wear with a final performance once it returns. Further details on viewing points available on website. Arto’s parade is titled KEEP YOUR HAT ON and is an homage to the maverick Brazilian artist Flávio de Carvalho who studied at Durham University in the 1920s. Carvalho is known for, among other provocations, refusing to uncover his head during a religious procession and almost getting himself killed as result. De Carvalho also sauntered down the street in São Paulo wearing a skirt which perhaps wouldn’t cause much of a stir here near the Highlands but almost caused a riot in Brazil in the 1950s. Arto’s carnival will build his opposition into his own parade, working with and manipulating the sound of the Ferryhill Brass Band and organising his own hecklers along the river bank. Maybe this way he can win over the hometown crowd!

ellibertador
COMMISSION
Simón Bolívar was the seminal, influential and contradictory figure behind the independence of Latin America from Spanish colonial rule. He liberated Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru and fought to establish a unified republic in the form of Gran Colombia. Ultimately his vision and dream was rejected and it withered away and he died a bitter and lonely man. This monologue performance with actor Alex Elliot is presented as a work in progress in both Spanish and English, written and directed by Nikolas Barrera. With elements of the script based on Bolívar’s speeches, the work mediates on universal themes of ambition, dreams and failure.
