IT DOESN’T COST A PENNY By Lisa Manfield
I
recently interviewed a local CEO of a large restaurant chain and was pleasantly surprised to find him not only friendly and approachable, but also humble, generous and acutely aware of the needs of his staff. He attributed his success to his team members, and made giving back a priority for everyone in his company. He also recognized that many of his employees were lower income people and single moms, and rather than taking advantage of them, as can often be the case, he explained his efforts to provide them with opportunities and benefits beyond what any other company in his industry offers. It was a refreshing experience to speak with someone so powerful who was also so socially aware. These days, being socially conscious is often associated with consumerism: corporate social responsibility is a term used mainly to describe companies and products that limit their negative impact on people and the environment. And it’s great to see so many companies doing this -- especially those that are doing it not for the marketing benefit but because they truly believe in doing good. But I also wish we would start applying the term social consciousness to non-consumer contexts. To the idea that being human means being conscious of other people’s feelings and needs. Because it seems that this “skill” is disappearing, and that we’ve become numb to the importance of empathy and respect of others, and not just in a corporate context.
the dodo bird. The frequent occurrence of attacks on Facebook led me to start wondering if we’ve lost the ability to be socially conscious people who can empathize with others -- whether online or offline. Have we forgotten how to reserve judgment, assume the best and treat people the way we would want to be treated? Has social consciousness been relegated solely to our spending power? We need to recognize that every social interaction we have can change someone’s day -- or life -- and that we have the power to determine if that impact will be positive or negative. It’s a powerful a way to change the world through social consciousness, and the best part is, it doesn’t cost a penny. n
I’m likely feeling this way because I’ve been spending so much time online in Facebook forums, where social consciousness seems to be going the way of Lisa Manfield Content Strategist Digital Storyteller SFU Instructor/Public Speaker

major indicator that decides the type of makeup you should opt for is the time of day. Depending on what time a particular event or occasion is scheduled; you should choose your makeup wisely. Lighting plays a primary role in choosing the type of makeup as different environments create different effects. During the day it is best to stick to natural looks with matte shades. Late evening or nighttime is the perfect time to try out colors with sheen and sparkle. The smoky look with dark shades and the contrasting bright look can both be carried off very well at nighttime.
Eye Makeup Ideas Shades that softly contrast with your eye colour are great for showing off your eye perfectly. Avoid colours that exactly match your eyes, as this will make them unremarkable. Stick to simple natural colours for your daily makeup and you can never go wrong. Colours that go well with all eye colours are navy, charcoal and powdered blue. The navy or charcoal will be used to define your eyes. Complementary colors make your eyes pop! If you want to make a statement, you should try complementary colours out. For example, green eyes with pink tones are an excellent way to grab attention.
• Loose eye shadows are often where you find the most colour pigment, but can be messy and tricky to work with. • Pressed eye shadows are the most common type of shadow, because they blend easily without being too messy. Figure out which shades of your basic eye shadow palette are meant for each part of your eye. It all depends on how you want to shade and shape your eye, but there are a few general guidelines: • The lightest colour usually works well as a brow bone highlighter. • The second lightest colour usually looks good on your lid. • The second darkest colour usually works best in your crease. • The darkest colour usually works best in your outer corner. www.anavbeauty.com n
Choose the eye shadow formula that works best for what you want. • Cream eye shadows work best as a base colour for powder eye shadow, or for solid, single-colour coverage.

efore we talk speakers, let’s talk watches. A Timex© and a Rolex© are both timepieces. If properly maintained and cared for, both will perform virtually the same function, to tell the time, for many, many years. So why spend $20,000.00 on a Rolex© when, for $50.00 you can have a Timex that would perform virtually the same function? One doesn’t buy a Rolex© merely to tell time. There are other reasons. It has a Titanium crystal so it will never scratch and always look great. Rolex© watches are famous among divers because they are robust and rugged. Chances are that a Rolex© will be handed down for several generations. But those still aren’t the main reasons that someone buys a Rolex©. One buys a Rolex© to make a statement.
Why Spend $20K on Speakers?
I’ve not told you anything new yet, nor anything that has to do with the title of this article. Except they are one and the same. Why would someone invest in a pair of $20,000+ Bowers and Wilkins© 800 Series speaker when they could buy a Bose© for $199.00? Don’t they both give off sound when the proper source is applied to them? Well, yes. Sort of. But comparing the $200.00 speaker one buys on Amazon© to the $20,000.00 Bowers and Wilkins© or Wilson© or Meridian© or Sonus-Faber© is akin to comparing a Timex© to a Rolex©. But whereas in the latter case they might be functionally similar but cosmetically different, in the case of speakers there is a fundamental difference in performance.
While one might conceivably find a Timex watch on the arm of a shallow diver in the South Pacific, when one walks into Abbey Road Studios or the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, one will ONLY find Bowers & Wilkins©. You see, there is a definite difference in sound quality between Bose and B&W. It is not just that they both “make noise.” The latter is highly tuned, hand crafted precision instrument capable of reproducing in the minutest detail, sonic perfection. It’s more than just a “noise maker.” That’s why it’s worth the money. n by Daryl Wall Insight Automation Internationals · dwall@insightai.com 403.680.4825

nspired by a model dating from the 1940s, Mido’s largest three-hand model, the Multifort Escape expresses its masculinity and sporty style through its large black dial decorated with vertical Geneva stripes and orange touches. The timepiece is fitted with the Caliber 80, an automatic movement at the cutting edge of watchmaking technology, which, in addition to its formidable accuracy, endows the watch with 80 hours of power reserve.
In 1947, American pilot Milton Reynolds broke the record for an around-the-world flight with a Multifort on his wrist. Seventy years later, its contemporary reinterpretation is sure to win over thrill-seekers and anyone wanting to explore new horizons. Launched in 1934, two years after the Sydney Harbour Bridge was completed, the Multifort collection shares the structure’s remarkable qualities – a perfect blend of functionality and beauty. atic collection one of the longest-produced series in the history of Swiss watchmaking. It is a sporty, masculine timepiece designed for surpassing limits and exploring new horizons. In 1947, American pilot Milton Reynolds broke the record for an around-the-world flight in 78 hours and 55 minutes with a Multifort on his wrist. Seventy years after this feat, this contemporary reinterpretation will be a fitting timepiece for anyone wanting to explore new horizons and surpass their limits. Such as parkour enthusiasts: the urban athletes who turn cities and buildings into an immense obstacle course at top speed and in style.
80 hours of power reserve Mido’s largest three-hand model, the Multifort Escape features a robust 44 mm stainless steel case with an aged and sandblasted black PVD treatment, a finish which makes each model unique. Protected by a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective treatment on both sides, the black dial is decorated with vertical Geneva stripes that create a subtle and entrancing play on shadow and light, and adorned with several orange touches, a nod to Mido’s identity and to the model of the 1940s. www.midowatches.com n

HIGH ART. HIGH STYLE. A TRIBUTE TO THE MASTERS. Inspired by paintings in the National Gallery’s European art collection, Oakridge is proud to present these stunning masterworks in a new way. In this fi rst edition of the series, we present a work by Gustave Doré (1832–1883), one of the most successful and prolific artists of the 19th century.
Doré’s imaginative illustrations of the great literary classics have forever changed the way we see the world. Despite his success as an illustrator, his driving ambition was to succeed as a painter, and his landscapes are among his most innovative paintings. In 1873–74 he travelled to the Highlands of Scotland and later captured in paint the vast scale and wild beauty of the region.

here’s no denying that Vancouver has become a status city, largely recognized as being the luxury car capital of the world, against a backdrop of one of the most expensive real estate landscapes anywhere. Canada in general is experiencing unprecedented growth of the ultra wealthy at a rate easily outpacing the United States. If there was a Billionaires’ Club, it would be headquartered in Vancouver and the club house would be furnished by Formitalia Luxury Group. The Formitalia Group was founded by Graziano Overi in 1968 and today is managed by brothers David and Gianni Overi. Under its in-house label Boutique Collection, Formitalia produced its first design collection in 1991, which heavily featured equestrian-inspired elements such as Arabian horses, flowing silks, tanned leathers and hammered metals. Their first commercial foray into luxury goods was - and is - an instant success and remains in production today. Building on that victory, Formitalia Luxury Group teamed up with Tonino Lamborghini in 2005 to broaden their lifestyle collection with home and office furniture. Anyone familiar with Lamborghini supercars, even if only from afar, will immediately understand the seductive nature of their furniture: ultra-soft leathers, vibrant colours and a masculine gravitas. More recently, this collaboration produced innovative designer kitchens, with limited edition collections featuring carbon and Kevlar. In 2011, Formitalia unveiled a new interiors capsule collection in collaboration with another luxury car manufacturer, Aston Martin. An immediate success, Formitalia followed up in the fall with a showcase of the complete interior concept at Milan’s famous Salone Internazionale del Mobile furniture fair, including accessories and lighting. Embodying the exceptional qualities associated with the prestigious British car, the Aston Martin Interiors collection is sleek and contemporary, prioritizing

the same advanced industrial technologies used making the cars, such as carbon fibre, magnesium and aluminum, alongside luxurious textiles including leather, wool and cashmere - the perfect blend of exquisitely ergonomic design and uncompromising comfort. It was at the 2015 Milan show when Steen Skaaning, co-owner of Vancouver’s Inspiration Furniture, first saw the Formitalia Aston Martin showcase. So overwhelmingly impressed by what was displayed, he worked furiously when he returned home to create a proper Formitalia showroom within his 40,000 square-foot
store. By September that same year, Skaaning had pieces from the collection in his store. “Inspiration Furniture is the only store in the Americas to display all three brands under one roof,” Skaaning states proudly. “Canadian consumers are quite in tune with European fashion trends, more so than the US,” states Skaaning. “Vancouver especially is a very fashion-forward city. We feel we have to constantly bring in the latest trends in contemporary furnishings. Vancouver simply expects us to continuously evolve [our inventory] and we love the challenge.”

Faithful to tradition, all Formitalia furniture is hand-crafted in the Tuscan region of Italy and effortlessly combines Old World techniques with modern ease. While every Formitalia brand shares similar origins, each absolutely remains true to its guiding aesthetic. Daniele Frosini, President of Luxury Brands Lifestyle (distributor for the Formitalia brands) firmly believes that each brand owns a very distinct personality. “Aston Martin Interiors is an expression of futuristic design with very clean, fluid, modern lines. Drawing from the Aston Martin car experience itself... the furniture borrows elements from the brand, from the shapes and the stitching to the leather quilting and embossed logo. Tonino Lamborghini Casa is the ‘power’ brand, with aggressive designs, using special leathers in iconic Lamborghini colours such as racing red, yellow, orange, flashing blue and black. Formitalia itself is the complete luxury home concept with complementing accessories to create a full room atmosphere. In addition to the furniture, there are accents such as pillows, blankets and [picture] frames.”

The success of Formitalia is a matter of lifestyle, proffers Skaaning. it’s designed for a specific demographic with specific furnishing needs - it’s specific for the very wealthy. “Most customers are amazed that such products and brands even exist. The customers who can afford this are excited... but anyone can just enjoy having a chance to come and experience this level of luxury [in the showroom].” This increasing demand for classic Italian luxury furniture is a clear reflection of Vancouver’s thirst for extravagant goods. Like many of Formitalia’s other top-performing markets - Russia, China and the Middle East - the growing number of Vancouver’s ultra wealthy are searching for retail engagements that cater to affluent predilections. This includes exclusivity, often in the form of bespoke customizations. “Think of Formitalia as the ‘YES!’ company,” explains Skaaning. “Each piece is not only completely hand-made - so each one unique - but that within reason it can be cus-

tomized. Ever dream of having your refrigerator covered in croc-patterned racing red leather? Formitalia will do that for you! You can get anything you want... as long as you’re ready to pay for it.” Prices rarely come up for discussion in such elite circles, but for the curious, Frosini provides a general hierarchy with Aston Martin Interiors positioned at the top price point; Formitalia follows as “high end’ in price; and Tonino Lamborghini Casa offers the larger price extension starting from middle- to high-end prices. Keep context in mind when self-defining “mid-end prices” where, in the world of Formitalia, asking for a croc-patterned leathercovered refrigerator is considered completely “within reason”. As Skaaning sums, “Even though the products are clearly luxury and expensive - and good value for money paid - if you have to ask about price, this is not for you.” n

ach year our members enter their homes into the Ovation Awards for the opportunity to be chosen as one of Metro Vancouver’s leading residential builders, renovators or designers. Entries are peer reviewed by award winning industry professionals who build outside of Metro Vancouver, making an Ovation Award a highly coveted honor in our industry and a symbol consumers have grown to trust. From whole-home transformations to modest kitchen renovations, and from amenity-rich townhome communities to luxurious custom-built estates, the Ovation Awards recognize some of the best builder, renovator, and design member companies in Metro Vancouver.

At the 2017 Ovation Awards, Tavan Developments Ltd. was nominated 11 times and took home 4 wins, including the coveted Custom Home Builder of the Year award. What does a home built by the Custom Home Builder of the Year look like? Let’s take a closer look. One of Tavan Development’s homes that swept many awards is a magnificent English-Tudor-style home, situated across from a well-known Vancouver Park. The old world charm is achieved using wood and stucco detailing, and locally sourced ornamental timber is used to add mass and grandeur. Mechanically tumbled red brick cladding is applied to achieve an aged appearance, and paired with curving pathways and perfectly manicured landscaping, this home is a marvel.
The solid maple front door is inviting, accentuated by a gorgeous glass façade that offers a glimpse of the luxury awaiting inside. Upon entering, you are greeted with a curved staircase, engineered hardwood floors blended with rich marble tile, and intricate millwork details. Although the vintage luxury theme encompasses the house, functionality is not lost as a modern open concept greatroom is the heart of the home, showcasing a kitchen with a 16-foot island, the biggest the builder has ever installed! A spice kitchen off the side of the kitchen keeps messes out of site when entertaining. Large glass doors skirting the great room connect to a trendy outdoor living space out back, completing the flow from formal in the front of the house to more modern and relaxed in the back. Moving upstairs, each of the six trussed vaulted-ceiling bedrooms have their own personality with two being full master ensuites finished with marble décor. On the lowest level, an entertainment mecca with space for 10 to 100 people is bound to impress guests with a restaurant-style bar, media room, 10-foot ceilings, and the most spectacular wine cellar. The spacious basement was achieved through advanced foundation and framing work, allowing the basement to extend under the outdoor patio. Equally as important, this home performs efficiently, achieving the best energy-efficiency rating for Tavan Developments Ltd. to date. All energy ratings done on their homes surpass all minimal energy standards by 40%. Throughout the design and planning process, clients are educated on sustainable materials and finishes so that their home is built with the best products to perform for themselves and the environment. The Ovation Awards are dedicated to acknowledging quality and excellence in our industry. The rest of the 2017 Ovation Award winners were recently announced. The CaT’s Meow! VancouVer’s Most PoPul ar societ y Gal By Samantha Sito

ou may know her as Vancouver’s most popular society girl and Cat’s Meow event columnist - but behind the scenes, and beyond the red carpet, there’s a surprisingly secret side to Catherine (Cat) Barr that manages to balance a little bit of “chic” with a whole lot of “geek”. Since 1996, Catherine’s society and celebrity column has been a vibrant part of the Vancouver media scene. Working as an accredited reporter and journalist, she has written for many local newspapers and magazines and also has a background in TV and talk radio. Initially working as a government and politics reporter for the local newspaper, a strange twist of fate soon landed her the role of celebrity columnist. With over 20,000 photos and published articles in print, her columns have featured thousands of local and international celebrities along with coverage of all the star-studded galas, fund raisers and invite-only parties around town. A graduate of the University of British Columbia and BCIT, Catherine is also an accomplished musician and dancer. She has also judged the Juno awards (twice), has directed and taught musical theatre, and was even once the choreographer for the Calgary Stampeders Cheerleaders. What most people do not know however is that Catherine has a background in advanced digital design, programming and web development. An original internet entrepreneur, she purchased the domain names WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com back in 1998, and today she runs Turner Media Canada Ltd. which she owns and operates alongside her husband, Craig Turner. One of the city’s first digital pioneers, Catherine has helped build and code more than 250 websites personally. As publisher of WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com - she helped usher in the new media era. Long before Google was a household name, she published a full community directory, plus news and video stories online - and also established her own web camera network, installing live cameras pointing at the Lions Gate Bridge, Horseshoe Bay ferries, West Vancouver Seawalk and Canada Place cruise ships back in 1999.

“I remember standing in the Ministry of Transportation and Highways back in 2000 with this camera in my hand and a bunch of wires hanging out,” she says. “They basically laughed at me and threw me out when I said I was going to point it at the bridge to try to show people which way the lanes were going during rush hour.” Determined, Catherine continued trying to convince people that the internet was the future. She describes it as being “the only crazy person in the room”.

Building a Business is hard, espeCially when you’re one of The liTTle guys Trying To Bring aBouT Change, says CaTherine.
“The flower shop guy told me I was nuts and that no one would ever order flowers online. The newsstand guy said no one would ever read magazines online. And the Port of Vancouver said no one would be interested in seeing the cruise ships sail in and out of our city.” Today, after a record-setting 18 years of broadcast, Catherine’s websites, and web cameras, continue to log over 1.5 million views every month from all around the world. Daughter of an engineer, Catherine played more with computers than crayons growing up and wrote her first computer program at age 12 (a video quiz game on world capitals). “One day my dad brought home this box. It was a Radio Shack TRS-80 CoCo 16K Extended computer that plugged into the TV. No one else on the street had a computer back then. We loaded cartridges into the side

to run games or loaded programs from a cassette tape player. I loved it. I was officially now a computer nerd. I was hooked,” she says. Hacking into the games and looking at the scripts, Catherine soon learned “machine language” and “BASIC” and wrote more programs for fun. There was no looking back. Around age nine, Catherine skipped a year in school jumping from Grade Four to Grade Six. Problems arose later however when her family moved, and she found herself a new student at a new school - and the only 11-year old in a class of 14-year old teenagers. “Things weren’t fun back then. Plus here you are, this skinny geeky kid who knows no one and plays with computers,” she says. “They’d threaten you every day just because you were smart and different. I’ll never forget it.” For the next two years, Catherine tried to avoid the bullies at school as much as possible - which led to her spending even more time with her dance, music and computer hobbies. The whole thing came to a head one day when, near the end of the year, the “bullies” caught her and threw her off a stage breaking her arm. She transferred to a new school the next year - something she says helped save her life. Today she is a strong advocate for the cause and helps organize events and raise money to help stop bullying in schools. B O U L E VA R D

BalanCing her geek side wiTh her ChiC side is easy for CaTherine. a quirk she says CoMes naTurally due To The faCT she’s a “pisCean”.
“There is no place for bullying in our society, especially when it comes to kids,” she says. “Back then, I could run and hide at home. It was safe, and I had other activities. But today, the internet is everywhere, following kids, victimizing them. They don’t get any relief or enough adult help and it scares me.” And as someone who has built more than her fair share of websites, not to mention internet technologies, she should know. “Building a business is hard, especially when you’re one of the little guys trying to bring about change,” says Catherine. She also has a concern about just how much the news and media industry has changed over the years due to things like social media and more. “When I started in news, we would go out and get the facts, present them to our readers and let them decide what to think for themselves. Nowadays, media outlets seem to tell you their opinions, not the facts, and then they also try tell you what to think. It’s not good,” she says.

But when it comes to social media, Catherine is an enthusiastic participant and has become one of the city’s top influencers. So whether she’s interviewing Alice Cooper, attending a new restaurant opening or watching the returns on election night, there’s always something to talk about. “Social media is fabulous, provided it is used properly and respectfully,” she says. “It is still a developing technology, and no one is an expert yet. We’re making up the rules as we go along.” Balancing her geek side with her chic side is easy for Catherine. A quirk she says comes naturally due to the fact she’s a “Piscean”. “I’m a dual astrological sign they tell me, so I guess I have two sides that might be very different.” When asked which alter ego is the real Catherine Barr, she says: “It’s all part of me - because thankfully, today women don’t have to pick between being smart or being stylish. We can be both.” n

q&a Sam Sito How would you describe yourself in three words? Determined. Passionate. Caring. How did you get started in the media and news business? After graduating from UBC, I got a job writing for the local newspaper as a government and council reporter, sitting through long meetings at city hall, waiting for the next headline to hit. They’d give us these massive packages of paper to sift through, and I’d often ask why they didn’t put it all online. They said they didn’t have a website yet. At which point I said ‘I’m building my own website right now, and I can build one for you too’. My friends and I then put together a team and submitted an RFP for consideration and found ourselves building the first ever website for the District of West Vancouver. But since I was now working on the inside, this meant that I could no longer be the “government” reporter for the newspaper. I remember asking for something else to write about for the newspaper when my editor kind of threw a camera at me and suggested I go to cocktail parties. I’d barely taken a photo before in my life, but there you go - a society columnist was born! Can you share what a day in the life of Catherine Barr looks like? My life is constant, non-stop work, but because I love it, I don’t mind it. I’ve never had a true day off or taken a holiday anywhere without taking my computer with me. I am usually up coding or writing until the very small hours of the morning. I am a definite night owl. What do you love most about what you do? I love the people the most. But I also became a reporter to help tell the facts and tell the stories that people need to know. I love that every day in the news world is different. It never gets boring.
What three qualities do you think people should have to be successful? You need to pick something you love, learn everything you can about it, and never give up trying to make it happen. You’re a busy woman, what do you do during your time off and how important do you think it is to recharge? Time off? Almost never. I wish I had more. Almost always spend it on my music, playing the piano or learning a new instrument. I also love watching movies. What advice do you have for others (regardless of age) who want to start a business, or try a new venture? Learn everything you can about the business. Become an incredible organizer. Hire only the best people possible. Never settle for second best. Can you share one secret to success? There isn’t just one, except to say that you absolutely must get used to challenges and maybe even failures. They’re supposed to happen to you. That’s how you grow and learn. Top three travel destinations? Anywhere I can get to on a cruise ship or boat. I’m also a Las Vegas junkie but not for the gambling, just for the food, shopping and excitement.

et’s face it: Vancouver’s real estate market is hot right now. We often hear people say: “Don’t worry—act quick. If you miss this opportunity, you will regret it. Just close your eyes and make the purchase!”
However, Brooks Findlay, head strategist and negotiator at Endgame Real Estate Strategies, sees it differently. He claims you need a game plan to win in today’s real estate market, regardless of whether you are buying or selling a property. At Endgame, he and his team help clients strategize in the real estate market with negotiation strategies that anticipate every potential outcome and provide for all possible contingencies— with proven results. Endgame’s business card features a pair of queen chess pieces against a black background. Findlay loves to play chess, and is fond of transferring strategies from the chessboard to his work in the real estate market: remain calm, strategize and wait patiently for the best possible timing. “ [When designing the business cards] we put in a lot of thought, just like we would in the way we serve our clients.” Findlay went on to explain that strategies from the chess game can be applied to all aspects of the Endgame real estate team. Chess players need to see the big picture and understand the potential outcome for each possible move. Similarly, his team treats real estate transactions with the same meticulously considered and strategic maneuvers to suit each client. Findlay explained that the hardest part of real estate sales is bringing together the seller and the buyer. In this regard, Endgame lists listings, provides marketing, categorizes properties, and finds potential buyers and sellers for different real estate projects. Having developed a unique “9 Step” system, their housing sales have become more efficient and clients’ benefits have been maximized. “Therefore, each strategy the Endgame team develops has its purpose. We simplify and focus on maximizing client’s benefits and efficiency. Our team is called ‘Endgame,’ which means finishing the game with our clients on the winning end.”

Sometimes a chess game lasts for several hours. Though it is important to have the right tactics to achieve a victory, patience is integral — and a large component of Endgame’s philosophy is owed to this metaphor.
“During a game, patience is a strong weapon. However, in the fast-paced Western culture, patience seems to be lost under the impact of long-term competition. I think the Oriental culture has a lot of things worth learning from — with patience being one of them. Patience is measured over time. In addition, patience gives us a peaceful heart, helps control our emotions and allows us to better communicate with our clients.” EndGame’s patience philosophy was applied in its team-building process — Findlay spent a full seven months selecting his team members. Today, EndGame’s team includes different real estate experts, including those who specialize in pre-sale properties, development sites, mansions and regional sales.

Members of the Endgame team — many of whom are fluent in foreign languages — come from various professions and cultural backgrounds. Carol Chui, who is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, has eight years of media experience and excellent communication skills. Marce Miller has 14 years of sales experience, and specializes in maximizing returns and benefits. Elizabeth Charbonneau, who has helped her family manage its real estate business, understands the needs of families.
Monika Beker, who joined the team last month, says members of the Endgame team help each other, learn from each other and serve the interests of their clients. Endgame is a young but experienced team. (When added together, the members’ professional experience adds up to 45 years.) The ambitions of the team are high, setting a goal of $200 million revenue in the next two years. “We want every buyer and seller in Vancouver to know us. The team’s past experiences allows us to communicate more effectively and efficiently with our clients. It makes the process of buying and selling more efficient and maximizes their returns,” Findlay said. n
endgame mansion specialist The Endgame real estate team is branded under Keller Williams Luxury International. Its listings include a wide variety of properties, ranging from 10-million-dollar detached homes, to million-dollar luxury apartments. The team finds properties based on their clients’ needs and sells for their clients at full-market value. As the main force of Keller Williams’ luxury home sales, Endgame has worldwide connections and a unique way of promoting their listings internationally.

s a young child, my family and I would drive through Blaine and rent a cottage on the tranquil and quiet shores of Birch Bay. My cousin and I would race out when the tide was stretched out beyond the horizon, allowing us to dig and race these large phallic looking clams. We would try and sell them to the various fish and chip shacks along the shore wondering if they would buy and use these meaty bi-valves for their clam chowder recipes. Not interested in using them, we would carry them back in heavy pails, sloshing briny salt water all over, back to their comfort zone of the sandy beach and incoming tidal waters. It would be years later that I learned that these large clams called geoduck, would become a culinary delicacy reaching top dollars in today’s supreme Asian restaurants! As an adult, it’s been years since I’ve driven crossing the border, not wanting to line up along the typically lengthy border crossings, and usually for a quick shop for those amazing American sales

(stores really know how to do a sale like their Thanksgiving Black Friday), or more importantly a culinary jaunt to the stellar restaurant scene in Portland, their superb Farmer’s Market to the upmarket and trendy restaurant scene in Seattle. Driving through Blaine I had always seen across the harbour a cluster of warehouses perched at the end of a narrow sandy spit. Originally built as a salmon cannery in the early 20th century, the buildings at Semiahmoo were redeveloped and built as a Golf and Country Club in 1994. Closed in 2012, the resort was purchased by the Wright Hotels Group the next year (they also run the iconic Space Needle in Seattle!), and after a refreshment of the hotel, it reopened the following year. Last year, the former talented executive pastry chef from the Four Season’s Vancouver, Bruno Feldeisen, became the new executive chef of the resort so we had to head across the border to see the new culinary changes that were brought to the resort as well as experiencing this “hidden” resort, just a stones throw away from our border.
Set minutes away from the Blaine border crossing, Semiahmoo Resort transports you away from Vancouver’s hectic city pace to the lapping sounds of their beautiful waterfront and tranquility. Well worth the visit for a weekend or mid-week getaway!

Hailing from France, the multi-award winning pastry chef and chocolatier Chef Feldeisen has been wowing guests with his well crafted unique desserts, pastries and chocolates for years.
Arriving in the cold, misty morning, we arrive to a warm vaulted entry hall with a comforting fireplace, and inviting lounge seating. Our ground floor waterfront room was well appointed, in contemporary muted warm colours but it was the easy access of the patio doors that lead us to the expansive beachfront. Having brought our dog, it made for great convenience to have her run along the waterfront right from our suite! Although the resort exudes a wonderful quiet and intimate atmosphere in a stunning location, it’s the resort’s Pierside Kitchen and Packer’s Oyster Bar I’m attracted to with its fresh seasonally, inspired cuisine. At the casual Packer’s Oyster Bar, the televisions were blaring basketball finals we focused on well executed pub fare, from superb golden-crisp beer-battered Cod fish and fresh cut herb-parmesan enhanced chips to a succulent creamy Crab Mac and Cheese, macaroni smothered in a white cheddar béchamel sauce kissed with sweet crabmeat. The menu showcases fresh local seafood from local steamed Penn Cove mussels, blackened rockcod to plump oysters from the harbour, a mere floating distance away. The beverage list includes a superb collection of local beers (draft to bottled) and regional wines from Washington and beyond. Hailing from France, the multi-award winning pastry chef and chocolatier Chef Feldeisen has been wowing guests with his well crafted unique desserts, pastries and chocolates for years. He was offered a bright new opportunity which opened the doors showcasing his true culinary talents, not just with sweets but stellar savoury dishes bringing new creativity to the once stoic menus. The Pierside Kitchen, although somewhat a bit cold in atmosphere with its long expansive room and vaulted ceilings, showcases a slightly more upmarket menu with their main entrees. A hearty tomato based Cioppino is brimmed with local mussels, manila clams, and jumbo prawns, heady with spicy chorizo, saffron and garlicky aioli. One brilliant idea we noticed is the thankful chalkboard at the welcome desk listing the highly valued regional farm-to-table artisan producers and suppliers that provide their bounty from the nearby fields, streams, pastures and ocean. Oh so important! Although eating is always at the top of any of my travel excursions, there’s always the wonderful experiences that come along with the various resorts. If you’re a golfer, Semiahmoo has a superb 7,005 yard tree-lined masterpiece course designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer. curvaceous country road on Vancouver Island winds to the southwest tip of Canada. Here volcanic lava flowed 50 million years ago, deep into the Salish Sea. And on the sunset side of 3,600 acres of permanently protected wilderness is SookePoint, a cloverleaf shape peninsula surrounded by water on 7 of 8 sides - almost an island unto itself. In 1996, Roxanne and Michael Thornton acquired the property, which marine charts show as ‘Possession Point’. Before breaking ground in 2014, they travelled to many of the finest resorts, spas and exotic locales, to ensure their plans were as thoughtful as possible.
“We believe this piece of paradise on Canada’s South Pacific is an exceptional property, deserving of world-class recognition”, Roxanne explains. “The tides and surf that ebb and flow along our washboard foreshore hyper-oxygenate the marine environment, creating a rich undersea garden. The little fish attract the big fish, and so spins the circle of life. The orcas and marine mammals come too, for the same reason we find the kitchen. At SookePoint you have centre front row seats to watch exciting marine action; often a fully immersive IMAX experience!” shares Michael. To more fully inhabit the natural environment, SookePoint ‘Ocean Cottages & Yacht Suites’ are designed somewhat like maritime ships,
but with all the security, stability and comforts of home. With special approval to build a mere 15 feet from the ocean (but by choice 22 feet or more above), cottages and suites feature nautical decks, large swivel captain chairs, and a set of turning great room and deck stools so residents and guests can scan for action anywhere across the sky and seascape. “We use prow-shape decks for some of the same reasons you have a bow on a boat — to improve the view forward and down both sides, plus to cut the sea breeze. And because you’re so close to the water it feels you’re yachting, experienced boaters sometimes soften their knees in anticipation of swaying with the
waves,” explains Michael. “But here, when everyone slides over to watch the whales below, no one rocks the boat,” he chuckles. On board, you can hear the surging surf churning around the gnarly old lava rock, smell the fresh sea air, and enjoy wrap-around views of the adjoining wilderness park, snow-capped Olympic Mountains and romantic sunsets that linger over the open ocean. Ocean Cottages have over-size sliding glass walls overlooking 200,000 acres of sprawling ocean, forest and mountain park vistas. The glass walls also act as an interface zone to adjust surround-sound acoustics, which can vary dramatically depending on weather and sea. “SookePoint Ocean Cottages are really just the picture frames,” explains Michael, “the true masterpiece is all of Nature’s Living Art that surrounds us.” Interiors have a distinct juxtaposition of traditional Victorian elements combined with indigenous wild west coast touches and seaside cottage ambiance. Floor plans range in size from 700 square feet to an impressive 3,000 square feet. Old-world crown moldings and indirect lighting are paired with rugged stone, quarried from the peninsula. Neutral pallets and natural elements ensure that the brilliant outdoor colours are not diminished. Platforms with storage elevate mattresses so you can even watch whales while lying in bed. And Ocean Cottages and Yacht Suites are fully finished prior to purchase, complete with all appliances, kitchenware, bedding, designer furnishings, art and accessories.

Exteriors feature trellis arbor entries with wrought iron gates, natural stone planter walls filled with overgrown native greenery and privacy walls. Cottages shine in a beachy, oceanteal colour, contrasted by clean and bright white trim with front window shutters. From the street, cottages look like charming little bungalows, nestled within a coastal garden. Yet they each stretch down several levels for a more intimate relationship with the sea. While all Ocean Cottages are anchored to the volcanic rock with steel rods, new phases will use a custom combination of energy efficient insulated concrete forms, Helix micro rebar and reinforced steel. “There’s no better foundation than our volcanic iron-rich basalt rock,” Michael explains, “so we are honoring where hot lava married the cool sea by making new Ocean Cottage floors and walls of exceptionally strong insulated concrete and steel, all the way to the roof.

After 64 public meetings long ago, the land was approved for comprehensive zoning that is hybrid by design. Owners can make this seaside community their home, get a traditional mortgage and live here full or part time. But they also have the flexibility to earn premium overnight resort income if they choose to rent when not in residence. There is full title strata ownership, a small selection of private homes and adjacent building lots, and even land set aside for a small village centre. Adjoining SookePoint is a protected wilderness park, featuring 50 km of nature trails and 10 km of pristine waterfront, ideal for kayaks, bird watching and fishing for halibut and salmon. As the next wave of pre-sold ocean cottages are delivered, plans include a dock, fitness centre and restaurant serving up fine west coast cuisine.
Surrounded by virgin shorelines, with marine birds and mammals as neighbors, SookePoint is a hidden gem in super-natural British Columbia. With the least rain on the wild west coast and the warmest winters in country, the south-west tip of Canada can become an iconic destination for the discerning traveler seeking memorable experiences on the dramatic leading edge of nature.
Whether arriving by plane or by ferry, SookePoint is less than 2 hours from Nanaimo, and under an hour from anywhere in Greater Victoria. Although only half hour from theatres, restaurants and superstores, SookePoint feels far more remote – as though you have already set sail! a timeless system oF tHe Future World’s First smart intelligent Central system Featuring modern smart Home leader Bang & oluFsen By Stacey X.
I
n today’s world, where technology advances so rapidly, “smart intelligence” has brought on a kind of technological revolution. It is a phenomenon which has quickly incorporated itself into quotidian life. What is “smart intelligence”? It’s technology that has the ability to perceive and respond to external information (where systems generate behaviour and language through information technology). In essence, the technology has the ability to think and make memories. Many manufactures of home devices are embracing
“smart intelligence,” incorporating the technology into automatic coffee machines, rice cookers, robot vacuums, air purifiers, TVs and audio systems. Smart homes have not only made life more convenient, but have also added a fascinating, new dimension to everyday living. Companies around the world are constantly developing increasingly intelligent devices. The instigation of smart systems has made it possible to transform one’s home into a comfortable living space where lights, thermostats and air conditioning can be controlled remotely.
B O U L E VA R D
73
From smart appliances to smart home systems, “smart intelligence” is in the process of assimilating into homes, with the aim to increase the quality and efficiency of daily living. With advances in technology and the tremendous growth in the market for smart home systems, many brands have plans for entering the smart home market. Take, for example, Bang & Olufsen. Founded in 1925, this world-class audio-visual company is a global leader in smart home products. This Danish consumer electronics company specializes in designing high-quality audio, video, medical and multimedia products. Bang & Olufsen is dedicated to incorporating carefully selected and meticulously crafted
accessories and materials in its product to achieve a harmonious balance between technology and design. Today, Bang & Olufsen has 714 stores in 200 countries. Regarded as the “benchmark of Danish quality,” Bang & Olufsen strives to combine innovative, user-friendly technology and aesthetic sleekness in its audio and video products. World-class companies like Audi and Aston Martin use Bang & Olufsen’s systems to create high-end interiors in their vehicles.
While other smart home brands are still working on developing products, Bang & Olufsen has already refined the technological prowess necessary to address the need for home product integration. One solution they have developed is BeoLink Gateway, a centralized smart home system that allows all Bang & Olufsen products to interact with other systems or devices, regardless of the brand.
74
B O U L E VA R D
Through cloud-based remote security, BeoLink Gateway can safely integrate various technologies to control hundreds of third-party and home-automation systems in simple and intuitive ways. The BeoLink system can be updated to new versions when they are released, and is easily operated by people of all ages. BeoLink Gateway is a one-of-a-kind technology in the current market. It uses the same interface on all tablets and smartphones. By downloading the BeoLink app, users have remote access to their home, anywhere, anytime. Â
Imagine waking up to the fragrance of an a readysteaming cup of coffee, and returning after work to a room temperature tailored to your preferences, paired with welcoming lighting and your favourite music drifting through the apartment. Your robot vacuum has been hard at work all day, the floors are spick and span and the air is fresh — thanks to the smart purifier, which filters away all impurities — allowing you to breathe easy. And when you are out and about, smart locks and security systems will give you peace of mind, and work to keep your home safe. With its elegant, user-friendly design, BeoLink Gateway allows you to control your home devices even in the absence of Wi-Fi. For the first time in Vancouver, Canada, one of Richmond’s large development community planners will work with Bang & Olufsen to construct top-notch luxury smart homes. Incorporating Bang & Olufsen’s superior smart home systems into the community will allow modern technology to fully integrate with home living. It will be a new, triumphant chapter in smart, waterfront living. n

n an historical building in Gastown, the elevator slowly ascends to the third floor. hundreds of elvis’ record cover photos are plastered on the red walls on both sides of the corridor. i walk past an antique record player and continue into a huge office, where a white-haired, fitand-hearty Bruce allen pops up from behind the desk and extends a welcoming hand: “hello, Kelly!” this is one of Canada’s most powerful figures in the music business for 51 years. from Bachman turner overdrive (Bto), the famous rock band of the 70s and 80s, and Loverboy, to michael Bublé, Jann arden and Bryan adams, allen is an important player behind these familiar names. he is north america’s most influential manager who led many musicians, producers and even athletes to glorious careers. he is known as the cornerstone of Canada’s entertainment industry. allen was born on may 19, 1945 in Vancouver’s dunbar neighbourhood. he studied labour relations at the university of British Columbia and considered a career as a union organizer. however, his love of music led him on a different path. in 1966, he started Bruce allen talent, and by the early 1970s, his company had become one of the top booking agencies in Western Canada.
80
B O U L E VA R D
in 1973, allen’s already-successful career took another turn when randy Bachman walked into his office and asked him to be the agent for his (then one-yearold) band, Bachman turner overdrive (Bto), formerly known as Brave Belt. although at this point the nowfamous Canadian hard rock band had only released two unexceptional albums, allen saw its potential and helped transform it into one of the most successful bands of the 1970s, with albums topping the music charts in Canada, the us and the uK. thus began allen’s notable career in artist management. allen’s feat with Bto became a recurring pattern with other bands and artists, who went from being unknown to reaching the pinnacle of their careers. in 1980s, the pop-rock band Loverboy sold 20 million albums and won eight Juno awards under his tutelage. in the meantime, allen added the talented rock singer Bryan adams to his roster. adams had over a dozen chart-topping singles and his six albums made top 10 on the charts in the us and uK. his “(everything i do), i do it for you” became a major hit, ranking number
one on u.s.’s Billboard hot 100 — it still holds the record for topping the uK singles Chart for 24 weeks. in 2003, allen signed michael Bublé, a pop-jazz singer from Burnaby, and in less than a year, Bublé won a Juno for “Best new artist.” his self-titled debut album was also nominated for album of the year and rose to top 10 on Canada, uK and australia’s pop music sales chart. in the following nine years, Bublé won three Grammy awards and 10 Junos. his 2010 release, “Crazy Love,” charted in the top five in over a dozen countries, while “Christmas” of 2011 ranked number one on the charts in 20 countries, sold nearly seven million copies within nine weeks and became the second largest selling album of the year. the list continues: martina mcBride, the famous american country singer known as the ‘Celine dion of country music”; anne murray, a Canadian pop and country singer who won several Grammy awards; Jann arden, a Canadian singer-songwriter, and many famous music producers can also be found on allen’s triumphant roster.

Hard work, world tours and a sHrewd vision are allen’s key to creating legends. 82
B O U L E VA R D
What do Bachman Turner Overdrive, Loverboy, Michael Bublé and Bryan Adams all have in common? Other than international musical fame and acclaim, there is one important force that unites them all: Bruce Allen. One of Canada’s most powerful figures in the music business and among North America’s most influential managers for 51 years, Allen has guided many musicians, producers and even athletes through glorious, successful careers. He is known as the cornerstone of Canada’s entertainment industry.
allen’s success lies in his keen eye for artists. not only can he ascertain those with a promising future, he can also discover those with hidden potential and bolster them up to stardom. “someone may be a mediocre singer, but would make a great music producer. When i see that, i’d help them change,” said allen, whose current roster includes Bob rock, dave Pierce and darcy oake. hard work, world tours and a shrewd vision are allen’s key to creating legends. “We tour where our albums go and this really helps boost sales,” allen said. in the early days, Canadian music managers would only have their singers perform in Canada, while allen had his artists tour internationally, carving out an opportunity for becoming world-renowned stars. “many musicians are satisfied with modest results and don’t expect much growth. i don’t have time for those people,” said allen firmly. he drops the lazy and the ignorant from his roster, and those who remain under his wing work tirelessly to achieve success. take, for example, Bryan adams: he had 10 shows every month and 120 shows a year for 9 years straight. allen is influential not only in Canada’s entertainment industry, but worldwide. he has earned many honours in his career, including “manager of the year,” soCan’s “special achievement award” and the “Queen elizabeth ii diamond Jubilee medal.”

on top of his glamorous career as an artist manager, allen is a well-known radio show host. he was the host of the popular call-in “sound off with Bruce allen” on CfoX radio station for 16 years, and presided over the weekly “Bruce Break” on JaCK- fm radio. Currently, allen hosts a daily “reality Check” commentary program on CKnW. his clear, sharp perspective and daring style made these shows popular, and also sparked controversy. for example, 10 years ago, he faced accusations for his remarks on immigrants. “it seems more and more that we are being attacked (?) by special interest groups that just want to make special rules for themselves,” allen said during his
84

broadcast. “this is easy to solve: these are the rules, there’s the door. if you don’t like the rules, hit it. We don’t need you here. you have another place to go — it’s called home. see ya.” he specifically mentioned rCmP officers who wear turbans instead of the traditional hat, and elections Canada’s decision to allow women to wear burkas to vote. “how can we differentiate voter’s identity?” allen asked. today, with a rise of negative comments presented by the Canadian media toward Chinese immigrants, i asked allen what he thinks. he got up, walked towards the window and pointed outside to the addicts wandering along hastings street.
“Kelly, do you see any Chinese there?” allen asked. there were none. 72-year-old allen is still very energetic, and busy working in his office every day. asked when he plans to retire, he laughed and said, “my girlfriend said to me that i need to find at least two hobbies before i retire, and as of now i have none. so, it won’t be anytime soon!” n

MASTERS A COLLABORATION WITH JEFF KOONS. Louis Vuitton unveils a new collection of bags and accessories designed with the artist in Spring 2017
I
n recent years, Louis Vuitton has affirmed its engagement with the world of art through a series of high-profile collaborations with the most influential artists of our times. Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Yayoi Kusama, Stephen Sprouse, Cindy Sherman, James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson and Daniel Buren have worked with Louis Vuitton on commissioned artworks, the development of new products and the staging of fashion shows, expanding the House’s role as both patron and curator in creating new ways for the public to experience the arts. This relationship culminated in 2014 in the opening of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, a distinctive art museum designed by Frank Gehry. In the French House’s latest collaboration, Louis Vuitton is working with the New-York- based artist Jeff Koons to create a new range of bags and accessories to be launched on April 28. One of the most widely recognized figures in contemporary art, Koons has brought imagery from his long-standing Gazing Ball paintings–a series of large-scale hand-painted reproductions of works by the Old Masters—to a range of Louis Vuitton products. His re-creations of masterpieces by da Vinci, Titian, Rubens, Fragonard, and Van Gogh have been transposed on to such iconic Louis Vuitton bags as the Speedy, the Keepall and the Neverfull. Pushing its know-how to new limits, Louis Vuitton has employed
92
B O U L E VA R D
the most advanced techniques and craftsmanship to faithfully reproduce the artworks on the canvas of the bags. In choosing works which themselves consciously referenced paintings of the past, Koons’s Gazing Ball series of paintings placed the artist within a chain of influence and inspiration that runs through the history of Western art. Now, by re-presenting these celebrated pieces on Louis Vuitton bags, Koons once again invites viewers to consider these works anew, opening the museum to the world and encouraging us to experience the Old Masters in novel ways. The bags are realized using the highest quality materials, and each one is boldly emblazoned with the name of the original artist whose work is re-presented.
Koons has also reconfigured the famous Louis Vuitton Monogram to bear his initials. This represents a radical departure for the House, which has never previously allowed its iconic pattern to be reshaped. Just as the Gazing Ball paintings placed Koons within the lineage of art history, so this collaboration situates the artist within the heritage of Louis Vuitton itself, demonstrating the power of the artistic gesture to connect the present day with a shared cultural history. Elements from this new monogram have been crafted by Louis Vuitton in metal and placed on the exterior of the bag, as has Koons’s own signature. Each bag also carries a tag in the shape of the inflatable rabbit which has proved to be an enduring motif in Koons’s
work throughout his 40-year career, while a biography and portrait of the Master whose work has been referenced is featured on the inside of the bag. This spring’s launch represents the first stage of the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Jeff Koons. Further chapters will be announced in an ongoing project that celebrates the possibilities of connection through the history of art. n

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper. W.B. Yeats
I
have always seen beauty around me, and have loved fairytales since my early childhood. The camera allows me the ability to share what I see and perhaps even more importantly, share what I feel. If one of my images evokes an emotion, then my mission has been accomplished. For this reason, horses have always been one of my favourite subjects. Their place in time honoured fairytales is well documented and I love capturing equine power and beauty through my lens. In Iceland during an equine workshop that took place on a horse farm in the early summer long
northern days were spent shooting horses galloping on black sandy beaches, grazing beside majestic waterfalls, running through fields of watercoloured lupins and in contrast, simple quiet times wandering amongst the mares and their foals. This photo of (Princess) Sophia and Vindur was shot on a hilltop late in the evening. In Iceland the sun barely sets so you have 21 plus hours of daylight to capture that special image. While only two years old, the photo has a very medieval feel to it, leaving you with more questions than answers - a mystery if you will and just one of many images I captured during my week long stay. n
