O

ne of the best gifts I ever received as a kid was a subscription to Chirp Magazine. Every month, the latest issue arrived in my mailbox and it was like Christmas all over again: a new collection of stories to peruse at my leisure.

Nowadays, as a gift giver, I want to recreate that kind of sustained excitement -- whether I’m giving to my kids, my partner, or my family members and friends. That’s why I’m looking into giving subscription boxes this year. I’ve even managed to accumulate a list I wouldn’t mind receiving myself….

Fab Fit Fun It’s the one that’s got everyone talking -- and trading -- in my mom’s group. And after previewing some of the products -- like the recent Mer Sea cozy scarf -- I’m ready to sign up for this seasonal subscription (unless, of course, someone gets it for me, hint hint). It’s $49 U.S. per season for $200 worth of lifestyle and beauty products that you can customize or keep as a surprise. Surprise me I say! BCLiving’s Simply Beautiful Prefer to get your gifts a little closer to home? BCLiving. ca offers a similar lifestyle box called Simply Beautiful that offers premium beauty, style and home decor products sourced locally. The box ships quarterly and costs $88/season or $36/month, including shipping. And it sells out fast, so don’t wait to order!

You choose one of three box options (starting at $24.95/ month), then complete a style profile. A stylist then assembles your box of clothing and jewellery, and you only pay for what you keep once you’ve tried it all on. Best of all, your monthly subscription fee is credited to your bill if you keep at least one item, and you can skip a month or cancel at any time. Naked Snacks For my guy, I’m going with a gift subscription from Vancouver’s Naked Snacks. As a perpetual grazer with a penchant for trying new things, he’ll appreciate the selection of unique nut and fruit mixes, and I’ll feel good knowing he’s getting something healthy to munch each month. For me, it’s all about thinking inside the box this season for gifts that keep giving all year long. Happy holidays! n

Frock Box I’m a clothes hound, but as the mom of a toddler, I don’t have much time to shop these days (unless I’m perusing the Joe Fresh collection while getting groceries). So Frock Box had instant appeal, and it’s Canadian to boot. Lisa Manfield Content Strategist Digital Storyteller SFU Instructor/Public Speaker

very month Boulevard sends photographer, and chief Alfonso Arnold to scan our wonderful city to find a true, and passionate artist to interview, snap, and feature. This month, Alfonso had a chance to chat with Intl. singing sensation, and flamenco dancer Stephanie Pedraza. Boulevard: It’s great to have known you now for a few years, and watching your career fly. Tell us a bit about yourself, and what is going on in your creative world these days. Stephanie: Thank you so much for having me! I was born in Toronto but raised in Colombia. As a child, music ignited and moved me deeply. There has never been a day in my life that I haven’t sang! it was at 19 that I feel in love with Flamenco. So I packed up my bags and moved to Southern Spain. The rest is history! I have had the opportunity to travel the globe sharing my music and dance, as well as collaborate and record with some amazing like-minded artists. These days I perform full time as well as song write and choreograph. Boulevard: You have a Youtube of you having a massive vocal performance back home in Colombia, Cali Vive 2014. It looked like an incredible opportunity. Stephanie: Having the chance to go back to my roots in Cali, Colombia after 7 years was not only exhilarating but a very emotional concert. It was surreal singing for 25.000 people and getting to play music with friends from childhood. Boulevard: Who are your influences? (music/dance). Stephanie: There are so many! Sade, Alison Krauss, Selena Quintanilla, Daniel Lanois, to name a few as well as traditional Latinamerican music. My favorite dancer is and forever will be Eva La Yerbabuena.

Boulevard: One can only imagine how challenging it is to be a full time artist. How truly difficult is it? Take us through a day of being Stephanie. My day is always a little bit different. As an artist, I am an entrepreneur. I am my own manager, promoter, stylist etc. I am in the dance studio at least 3 days a week practicing. I also play my guitar everyday and perform roughly 3-5 nights a week. Staying mentally and physically fit is just as important to me as nurturing my craft. Some days are just crazy from start to end but I love it and wouldn’t change a thing, because I am doing what I love! Boulevard: In closing, what are we going to expect from Stephanie in the near future, and beyond? Stephanie: I’m currently finishing up the writing of a second album as I plan to record in the new year. My goal is to continue to grow and share my art, challenging myself artistically for the rest of my life. Boulevard: Thank you so much Stephanie for taking the time for a snap and chat. We look forward to seeing you on stage again soon! For more information on Stephanie, and her art visit: www.stephaniepedraza.com n By Alfonso Arnold alfonso@alfonsoarnold.com

Material World By Catherine Tse

anadian designer, Janette Ewen, is a frequent friend of Montreal-based furniture retailer, Mobilia. As a stylist, her clients love Mobilia for its chic, high quality pieces at affordable price points. Always on trend, the new Velour collection features furniture and accessories that are plush in texture and rich in tones. Ewen feels this collection will do particularly well with her West Coast clients, who love to mix materials and don’t shy away from creative décor. Velour is hot on the heels of designers like Gucci, who are currently favouring details such as fur and embroidery, catering to consumers who are thirsty for textural details after years of minimalism. “You want your room to say something exciting about you,” says Ewen. “Do you want to have cocktails with this person?”

30

B O U L E VA R D

Inject some personality into a room with little touches, advises Ewen. There’s no need to completely redecorate in order to make an impact. And in fact, layering colours and textures will make spaces look bigger. Here are Ewen’s favourite pieces and tips for incorporating Velour into your home:

2

2. Spoot, pendant lamp. An admirer of American sculptor Alexander Calder, Ewen is drawn to Spoot, a mobile-esque lighting fixture that takes inspiration from Calder’s signature sprawling, asymmetrical designs. Spoot is quirky yet sophisticated, theatrical yet wholly functional. This is a modern industrial statement piece that in one swift swap, will instantly transform a room. So artistic in its presentation, Spoot will easily serve as a conversation piece, off or on. ($999) 3. Noir, queen bed. Don’t be intimidated by the scale of this bed, assures Ewen. The tall headboard actually elongates the room, even if it’s a small one. She suggests leaning into the drama by further accentuating it with graphic wallpaper. Your eyes will be drawn upwards, making the room appear larger. The masculine colour and tufting are balanced by the soft velvet fabric, giving this piece a sumptuous, Baroque feel. ($1,299)

4

1. Sadie, accent chair. This elegant wingback chair in warm almond velour is both classic and contemporary (it’s also Mobilia president, Johannes Kau’s favourite piece in the collection). It’s comfortable, it swivels, it promotes conversations. “This is the perfect parlour chair,” says Ewen. “We’re returning to the art of entertaining and this perfectly sets the scene.” The plush velour fabric invites lingering, while the tall silhouette beautifully updates the traditionally overstuffed wingback. Both Ewen and Kau comment on the gold band that encircles the base - a subtly gilded touch that adds levity and femininity to a substantial piece. ($1,599)

1

4. Narnia, sectional. “Like navy or black, I consider green to be a neutral,” say Ewen, specifically referencing the Narnia sectional sofa. Such a large, functional piece like the Narnia needs to be easy to integrate into an existing room, and this does beautifully. It has a fresh, mid-century modern feel with slim metal legs that give it an airy feel. “It’s such a nice way to bring green indoors,” Ewen says, knowing her west coast clients’ love for the outdoors. ($2,199) 5. Spencer, accent chair. Highly structured, yet cozy and inviting, this chair is Ewen’s secret weapon for making any room look instantly styled by a pro. With its Mad Men vibe, the lines are strong and reinforced by the chrome helicopter base. Ewen finds this the perfect piece for balancing out a room that it otherwise leaning a little too neutral or too feminine. This always sets the tone back to cool. Mobilia currently has eight showrooms in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, and offers online shopping and shipping through mobilia.com across Canada. n

Dynamic Duo Reveal A Millionaire Lottery Home

The Millionaire Grand Prize Luxury Home is waiting for a Lucky Winner 32

he grand prize of this year’s VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation Millionaire Lottery is an incredibly impressive and stylish mansion in South Surrey’s Elgin Estate. Worth over $3.3 million, this masterpiece was designed and built through a collaboration between Red Tree Creative Homes and Positive Space Design. Developer Red Tree Creative Homes built the house, creating its stunning exterior appearance. Positive Space Design, which selected the furniture and décor, worked like a stylist, clothing the house in beautiful attire, paired with complementary jewellery. The teams worked together seamlessly. Although many of the décor decisions had to be made prior to the house’s completion, the end result is perfectly harmonious. Vic Sanghera of Red Tree Creative Homes and Sandra Hurtley of Positive Space Design led us through their masterpiece.

Above: Sandra and her carefully arranged table setting. Bottom left: Formal Sitting Room. Top right: Fabulous Kitchen. Lower right: Comfortable Stylish Bedroom.

Upon entering the front door, the first impression is of the vast space and harmonious complexity of the 2,140 square feet of living space on the main floor. To the right of the front door is the drawing room, complete with a light-coloured sofa, black gas fireplace and massive west-facing windows that welcome golden sunshine in the afternoons and early evenings. Orange-red cushions on the sofa and a painting of a galloping horse hint at two recurring design themes, and indeed, in the dining room, to the left of the front door, oranges and reds stand out among the table dĂŠcor and an oversized painting which uses simple lines to outline several horses. 34

HOME

The half floor that leads to the second floor is my favourite place in the entire home: the study. Dark maple envelops the entire space, from the panelling on the walls to the bookcases, and lends an antique flair. A large painting continues the horse motif while two grey sofas and a huge floor lamp create a comfortable reading area. A door just to the side leads to an outdoor terrace, offering a breath of fresh air if reading inside becomes tiresome. “The overarching style of this house is ‘modern meets classical,’” explains Vic. “This study and the few gas fireplaces are classical elements. Whereas the glass fence, stainless steel stair railings, lighting, large wine cabinets and others are more modern designs.”

Turning to the large and comfortable master bedroom, a chaise lounge sits next to the fireplace, and a nearby door leads to another outdoor terrace. Crystal chandeliers reflect beautiful and interesting light and shadows, which serve as the only wall décor. The walk-in closet is spacious and well-designed. The en suite embodies a quiet and peaceful atmosphere with its white bathtub, white cabinets, white candle on a silver holder, white flowers on the sink and white fluffy towels.

Wine room next to Kitchen

“I love that white turns this space spa-like. It allows one to completely loosen up and relax,” Sandra says as she rearranges some décor. A glass elephant on the silver tray by the sink harkens back to the elephant design on a cushion on the bed.

Vic Sanghera. The owner of Red Tree Creative Homes Company. Red Tree Creative Homes has 10 years of house building experience, mainly focussed on mansions, and have built grand prize homes for many children foundation lotteries, such as BC Children Hospital’s Dream Lottery, Hometown Heroes Lottery and others.

Sandra Hurtley, Founder of Positive Space Design. “I was born with an attraction to art and design. When I was small, I would tear pictures of furniture and décor pieces from my mother’s Sears catalogue and, using those pictures of carpets, beds and lighting décor, ‘create’ a ‘room.’ To this day, whether I am sitting in a doctor’s clinic or in a luxury hotel, I cannot help but contemplate the décor details of the room I am in. In my head, I am endlessly designing. “I am mesmerized by using different colours, lines and patterns to transform an ordinary space into something unique and beautiful, and I love to use the basic principles and philosophies of design to attain an aesthetically pleasing, elegant but seemingly natural and effortless effect. “After working 20 years in the travel hotel industry doing sales, in 2008 I decided to end it all and entered Portland, Oregon’s Heritage School of Interior Design to learn interior design and start a new career. This is the best decision I’ve ever made! My first big residential project was in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Then, I moved to Canada and in 2011 started up Positive Space Staging + Design. n

LOCATION, PAINTED WITH HISTORY British Properties, is one of Canada’s most exclusive communities intertwined with rich history. A neighbourhood originally purchased from the City of West Vancouver during the great depression, the Guinness family (Guinness Brewing Company) developed the community slowly; keeping home pricing at the top of the market and luxury at the forefront of development.

42

B O U L E VA R D

This neighbourhood has become one of the most coveted areas in Vancouver. 75 feet above street level with a striking port-cochère, The Mulberry’s 2000 sqft. outdoor living space and unobstructed views of the downtown water view skyline, Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park and Burrard Inlet make this home an essential piece to the neighbourhood’s mosaic.

AGE-AGNOSTIC: EXPERIENTIAL LIVING With the desire for extraordinary experiences in the home, developers like Mulberry Properties find ways to bring passion into homes. In a more significant way, these homes simulate play. The Mulberry features an indoor-outdoor lifestyle with landscaped grounds and a resort style swimming pool and spa. Fight for Beauty By Kelly Bai Translation by Risa Liu

When did we say yes to beauty being discarded deleted and demeaned? Where is the agreement that beauty is optional – Not urgent for us to thrive? Since when have we learned the price of everything yet know the value of nothing? How could we have missed that beauty is a strength not a substance that makes its way through the cracks to come after our senses in full force to push us forward? Because we, we have not signed up. Westbank. Fight for Beauty.

triking, powerful and thoughtprovoking. This poem, “Fight for Beauty,” is displayed at the entrance of an exhibition of the same name.

The Fight for Beauty exhibition is currently on display in the Plaza Pavilion of Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim luxury hotel. At its centre is famed lighting designer and sculptor Omer Arbel’s piece 16.480, also known as the glass forest, where six-metre-high glass “trees” rise from a pile of burnt wood. Also in the spotlight is the custom-built Butterfly Fazioli Piano; its hollow three-dimensional design resembles a dancing butterfly, beautiful and agile. Zhang Huan’s Rising and Martin Boyce’s colourful Lantern Chains are also on display. Fashion exhibits include a vintage haute couture dress by Yves Saint Laurent; Alexander McQueen’s two classic works, Shipwreck and Salem, and Poiret’s rare 1925 Cocoon Coat. Some of the works by William Banks-Blaney, the famous “Vintage King,” are also shown in various parts of the exhibition hall. The beauty of architectural excellence is shown in many world renowned architectural models and artwork such as Kengo Kuma’s Alberni, Bjarke Ingels’ Vancouver House and Francis Kéré’s Serpentine Pavilion. Moreover, new works by movie producer Lukas Dong, artist Tristesse Seeliger and poet Shane Koyczan are also part of the exhibit.

This exhibition, which combines works of architecture, fashion, public art, design and sustainable development, is not organized by an art gallery or art agency, but by local real estate company Westbank. Through the years, Westbank has expanded its horizons, and now markets itself as an artistic, cultural company as well as being a luxury residential and mixed-use real estate development company. The exhibition showcases Westbank’s 41 most remarkable memories in its journey to Fight for Beauty. Since its founding in 1992, Westbank’s artistic architectural style has won much praise. It is known as a prestigious luxury property developer in North America and its projects can be found in major North American cities. Its portfolio includes Vancouver’s Shangri-La hotel and the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel.

Westbank CEO and founder Ian Gillespie once said the key difference between his company and that of other developers is that he aims to fuse architecture and art, and is committed to developing public art that is reflected through architecture. New York’s famous artist Liam Gillick and world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly have commissioned works housed in Westbank’s structures. Many of the outstanding architecture designs showcased at the exhibition are by Westbank. The company’s goal is not only to continue to build projects, but to collaborate with the world’s leading architects and artists to create an everlasting architectural culture for the city.

“One of my hopes with this exhibition is to underscore the vital role that beauty — the stimulating, provoking and life-altering kind — plays in our lives, and the importance of recognizing beauty: housing it, producing it and keeping an eye open for it,” said Gillespie, who recently wrote a book of the same name as the exhibition. His second book, Fight for Beauty records how Westbank evolved from a traditional real estate company into a culture company. On this road, art can be seen at every turning point. estled along the tiny, tree-lined West 41st Avenue in Kerrisdale, the elegant Faubourg Paris café serves up delicate macarons, hand-crafted pastries and incredible butter-drenched croissants.

It is here that businesswoman Mabel Forero sips an aromatic looseleaf tea blend from the renowned Maison Mariage Frères and contemplates a pastry from the display. She has slipped away from her namesake luggage store for a bit of quiet before her day begins. Fall is a busy season at Forero’s Bags and Luggage as everyone’s anticipated holiday travel, which has been planned for months, is slowly moving closer with each falling leaf. All around, the streets of Kerrisdale are bedecked with seasonal decorations and window displays reflect wardrobe recommendations suitable for addressing the unavoidable chill in the air. Born in Colombia, Mabel met her future husband, Canadian Hugh Rose, at a trade show, and in 1999 the couple moved to Vancouver. Together they explored a city of diversity and beauty, filled with friendly people and welcoming places. Although she misses the energy of Colombia, the West Coast has its obvious charms, and with her family healthy and business steady, life is good. I joined Mabel in this deliciously scented place, and as we sip and chat about the weather and community, the discussion naturally turns to her business. Mabel learned the ins and outs of the luggage industry from her husband. Now retired, Hugh was a respected and knowledgeable wholesaler of luggage for decades and when he stepped away — Mabel jumped in. Mabel worked retail in her youth and after graduation undertook postgraduate studies in business administration, which ultimately led to a managers position at a leather goods store. Her romance with Hugh led to marriage. Mabel’s son from a previous marriage is a budding neurosurgeon, and the couple’s daughter is keen on marketing and business. Both are involved and committed to the operation of Forero’s Bags and Luggage.

In 2010, the opportunity to open her own business presented itself when a Kerrisdale storefront came available for lease. Mabel swooped in and soon was renovating what was formerly a franchise luggage store. The final step was adding her family name to the signage, and thus Forero’s Bags and Luggage was born. Forero’s has an impeccable reputation in the industry and is known for stocking the top brands from around the world. It proudly carries the highest-rated lines available, including Rimowa, Tumi, Samsonite, and Briggs & Riley. Rimowa is a superstar in the luggage world and has set a high standard for hard-sided, lightweight luggage. By using the most durable wheel and handle systems and the strongest zippers, and by incorporating intelligent digital technology, Rimowa strives to make transport easier and more comfortable. This company has a long and fascinating history that began in 1898. It currently operates a manufacturing plant in Ontario and supplies Forero’s. Customers enjoy the quality and innovation of a legacy brand along with knowing they are supporting a Canadian-made product, so it is no wonder that Rimowa is the top-seller at Forero’s. For years, hard-sided rolling uprights have grown in popularity throughout Asia, and the Rimowa Topas Titanium is not only lightweight, but a luxury model with a price-tag to match. The largest costs almost $2,000. This exclusive series rolls through the terminals of the world in the colour of titanium. A new divider system is adjustable, and items inside are always fixed by straps and fasteners so nothing can slip around. The larger cases come with an integrated garment suit bag as well. Katie Rose

What sets the Topas Titanium apart is the latest innovation in travel luggage — the electronic tag. By using smartphone technology, travellers can now check in their “smart bag” from the convenience of their own homes. The electronic tag replaces the usual paper label. It has a digital data module integrated into the suitcase, which displays a screen the same size and appearance of today’s paper labels. In the future, Rimowa hopes to add digital boarding passes to the technology to streamline the check-in process even further.

suzette Hernandez redefining the Business of Luxury By Helen Siwak Publisher of BLUSHVancouver Magazine helensiwak@yahoo.com

I

n September, Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot officially launched its Vancouver boutique on Alberni Street in the famous “Luxury Zone,” with superstar performer and brand ambassador Lang Lang in attendance. From the invite-only press conference in the private upstairs lounge to the boutique show-

room and onto the luxury car-lined street, timepiece aficionados vied for photo opportunities with the newly unveiled Classic Fusion Chronograph Canada. The event was exclusive and deftly produced due in no small part to the vision and skill of Hublot’s brand manager Suzette Hernandez. Suzette has always been intrigued by luxury brands. “I was driven to this industry because of my passion for business development and drive for challenging experiences. I have always known it to be a very difficult industry to penetrate and naturally, this made it more attractive to me.

62

B O U L E VA R D

In 2014, after she modelled the feature jewellery for an auction at the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s A Night of a Thousand Stars, Suzette was approached by a representative of De Beers Diamond Jewellers (Canada) to model at a live auction for its Time to Shine Gala. Since starting with De Beers and later Hublot, Suzette’s role in the luxury market has continued to evolve, and she’s overseen multiple areas of the business such as marketing, public relations and events — and she is passionate about them all. Being on the other side of the camera, planning and executing photo shoots, instead of walking down the runway, is very satisfying to Suzette as she taps into her years of personal and professional experience in multiple industries — fashion, modelling and business management to name a few. Suzette is a serial goal-getter and multitasker often engaged in activities for the causes she supports, such as

women’s empowerment, healthcare and raising funds for children with no means to pursue higher education. “These causes have greatly impacted my life and I wish to make a difference, no matter the scale, to help those affected today.” When not busy in the world of luxury goods, Suzette can be found enjoying nature and exploring. Mental and physical health are very important to her. “No matter how many projects I am working on or where I am in the world, I find the time to work on both.” As one who loves nature and wide open spaces, she is inspired to channel her experiences to spark creativity. Her favourite place in Vancouver is the Seawall at Stanley Park where she walks, bikes and rollerblades next to the rolling waves, and at Spanish Banks, where she loves playing beach volleyball. “I learned a lot about myself and that I wanted more from life. There and then I committed to making the rest of my life the best of life.”

Talking about growth, development and the ability to make an impact in the lives of others, Suzette stresses that these are important to her. She believes there must be something meaningful in everything. “The most important thing in my life right now is to continue on this path where I am making a positive impact with family and friends, the brands I work with, the organizations I support and the girls I mentor.” Suzette was born in a “barangay” (a village) on the coast of Balayan Bay in the Philippines. Living a simple life with her family, she has fond memories of being by the water as a child. She was very young when her family moved to Canada and settled in East Vancouver. Coming from humble beginnings and driven towards creating a better life, she learned to be independent at a young age. A dedicated student and hard worker, she held multiple jobs after graduation. At one point, she simultaneously worked part-time for a marketing company and two retail stores, modelled and attended college. Her love of travel taught her about cultural landscapes and the importance of having a deeper understanding of the world in order to make an impact on a greater scale. This holds true in her career and she says “to market a brand is to know your market. To help a community is to know its needs. The rest is a matter of strategy and implementation.” In 2009, the pain of losing her father to cancer led to a deeper than normal period of self-reflection. She rented an apartment back in the Philippines, away from friends and family, and dedicated herself to reading and meditation. “I learned a lot about myself and that I wanted more from life. There and then I committed to making the rest of my life the best of life.” She began to work on empowering and improving herself as a way to see her academic, career and community goals come to life. She had the ambition but yearned for the highest level of confidence required to succeed and make a lasting impact. She overcame stage fright and fear of public speaking to become a public advocate for healthy lifestyles and fitness during her first pageant competition in the Philippines. She was first runner up, and over the course of her pageant involvement, 64

COVER C EL E B won awards and three titles including Miss Canada 2013 — Supranational. She placed in the top 10 out of 90 candidates at the international level of what is known to be one of the top five biggest competitions in pageantry. This marked her final pageant as she had already set her sights on the next big challenge — finishing her degree at UBC Sauder School of Business, Canada’s leading business school. “I wanted to reach the highest level of competition to represent and promote my country to the world, but the main goal had always been self-development. I was there to work on my social skills, confidence and ability to handle pressure and risk.” In 2013, Suzette completed an executive exchange program with Manchester Business School through UBC Sauder. The program presented an opportunity to travel and study in four European countries. In the spring of

2014, she graduated with honours, receiving a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, and many doors began opening for her. “My education prepared me in establishing my career in marketing.” Through hard work and diligence, Suzette Hernandez has experienced a remarkable transition from model, pageant winner and student to a career in marketing for two of the world’s top luxury brands. In today’s cultural atmosphere of “insta-fame" and the pursuit of personal glory, Suzette shares her story of dedication with a message to others who are unsure of where to proceed after the stage lights have faded. “Pursue your passion, write down your goals, read voraciously and never lose sight of your goals. Live the way you want to be remembered.” n

The Last Secret World in Japan

Tateyama Mikuriga Lake

ressed in a white kimono and hat, eyes blindfolded with a white cloth, I stood in front of the Nunobashi Bridge. Around me were over 100 women, dressed like I was, lined up uniformly as we prepared to cross the bridge.

The Nunobashi Bridge is on Ubadogawa River in Tateyama, Japan. This river symbolizes the separation between life and afterlife, like the Sanzu River in Japanese Buddhist tradition, and the long arched bridge is meant to lead us to paradise. Through the blindfold, a hazy Tateyama emerged atop the bridge, towering, solemn and mysterious. There sits the world of the mountain, as well as our way to paradise. Prior to the ceremony, we had repented our sins in the temple, releasing all worries and darkness in our souls. Accompanied by a performance of Japanese gagaku (classical music performed for the Imperial court), we then walked upon three pieces of white cloth on the Nunobashi Bridge, symbolizing our walk on the pure road to paradise. Women sobbed to the dreary music and tears had inadvertently rolled down my cooled cheeks as well. Step by step I managed to cross the bridge in wooden clogs, entered into a pitch black room and knelt on the floor. A woman’s painful cries were heard from far away. The Nunobashi-Kanjoe ceremony began in the Edo period when Tateyama, considered one of Japan’s holiest mountains, was believed to be where hell and heaven are brought together. Climbing it would lead one to paradise as sins were cleansed and new life was received. However, women were considered unholy and were forbidden to climb this holy mountain. Therefore, the Nunobashi-Kanjoe ceremony was set up and held every fall for women to reach paradise without climbing the mountain. B O U L E VA R D

71

Nunobashi-Kanjoe Ceremony

Since then, Tateyama has become a place of worship for Japanese women. They come from different places to take part in this ceremony in the hope that they may reach paradise after death. However, in the Meiji period of the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Nunobashi-Kanjoe ceremony was abolished due to an anti-Buddhist movement. It was not until 1996 that Tateyama revived this traditional ceremony, now held every three years. The goal for many women participants is to purify their soul. Still blindfolded, I could not see and dared not look back. In silence, a droplet of water fell on my head; this water was drawn from the top of Tateyama. It signified that we had climbed over Tateyama, were cleansed of our sins and received new life. Each woman then removed her blindfold, and a clearly outlined shadow of Tateyama appeared outside the window, holy and mysterious. Unlike the city hustle in the tourist-filled Kyoto, Tateyama allows for a deeper understanding of Japan’s essence and traditional culture. Situated in central Japan, Tateyama, 72

Mount Fuji and Mount Haku are Japan’s three sacred mountains, also known as “The Japanese Alps” and “Japan’s Last Secret.” In exploring this “last secret,” I begin at the Tateyama museum, where many of Tateyama’s monuments and mandala paintings are displayed. There are many legends about Tateyama’s beliefs. One from the Nara period of AD 701 to 794 tells how General Saeki’s son was hunting with his white hawk when it suddenly disappeared. Saeki went out to search for the hawk but was blocked by a black bear. He shot the bear with his arrow and followed its trail of blood to a cave. Inside, he did not see the hurt bear, but an arrow-shot Buddha. Terrified, Saeki quickly apologized, and Buddha said, “the white hawk and bear are both embodiments of me.” He had waited at the cave for Saeki, hoping that he would use this mountain to protect the country. Henceforth, Saeki became a monk, renamed himself Jiko and established the “Tateyama Temple” on Tateyama for a lifetime dedication.

Top: Sunset in the fall in Tateyama. Middle: Kurobe Dam. Bottom: Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Murodo, the highest point along the route.

Upon understanding Tateyama’s beliefs and hearing its touching legend, I cannot wait to find out more about its mystery. Tateyama is a collective name for a series of peaks of over 3,000 metres tall and 90 kilometres long. It stretches from Toyama Prefecture Hill to Nagano Prefecture Fan Ze. To travel across, it would take seven different types of transportation, including the world's longest unsupported alpine cable car, Japan's only electric power-free tunnel bus and an underground cable car with a slope of 3.5 degrees. Aside from its closure due to heavy snowfall from the end of November to the middle of April, every season offers endless scenery. In spring, accumulated snow forms a majestic snow corridor that is 500 metres long with snow walls that are 20 metres high. Visitors can walk in the corridor and touch the ice wall while a streak of blue sky appears above. By summer, all snow has melted and Tateyama is filled with flowers in full bloom and a variety of alpine plants. In the fall, the snow-capped mountain is covered in red maple leaves; it is beautiful and soul-stirring. It was the end of September when I visited. I took the cable car from Tateyama Station to Bijodaira, then transferred onto the highland bus to Murodo, the highest point along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route at 2,500 metres. The sky was grey with light drizzle, and the mysterious Tateyama was covered up by thick fog. As the sky started to clear, streaks of sunlight brought the mountain into view — clothed in colourful flowers and a mix of golden yellow, green and red leaves. Its reflection on the blue surface of Mikuriga Lake was stunning. Many different kinds of alpine plants are found along the lakeshore. In the old days, the water in this 30,000-square-metre volcanic lake was used to cook meals that were offered to the god in Tateyama, hence the nickname “a kitchen pond for god.” Tateyama is home to Japan’s highest waterfall, Shomyo Falls, at 350 metres. After the snow melts in the spring,

a second waterfall, Hannoki Falls, appears on the right of Shomyo Falls. When there is an upsurge of water, a third waterfall, Somen Falls, can be seen to the right of Hannoki Falls. It is a rare sight to see water rushing down the three waterfalls simultaneously. Kurobe Dam and Kurobe Lake also add to the beautiful landscape at Tateyama. Besides its beautiful natural scenery, it also features many traditional handicrafts. Takakuni Kawahara, a local artist in Tateyama, is the lone successor of the 400-year-old Birudan Washi papermaking method. Birudan Washi, Yatsuo Washi and Gokayama Washi are the three remaining traditional papermaking workshops in the northwest part of Etchumachi, Japan. Kawahara demonstrated, step by step, the art of papermaking, from preparing the fibre material to manually producing the different kinds of washi paper. Birudan Washi has earned many prestigious awards in Japan and internationally for its exceptional quality and superb craftsmanship. The pottery workshops here also have a long history and reputation. Under the direction of a potter, I spent two to three hours making my very first ceramic work — a rather simple cup.

Shomyo Falls and Hannoki Falls.

Kurobe Lake

With every step taken inside Tateyama, there flows an endless stream of new discoveries — a touching legend, long history, rich culture, beautiful scenery, sacred ritual, traditional handicrafts; this isn’t just an ordinary trip! n

t the epicentre of historic Gastown at One Water Street, a series of quirky window displays offer a glimpse into the heart of Secret Location. Adorned with giant keys, the glass doors of this hidden boutique open to a playground of couture by designers whose names we are not yet familiar with. The knick-knacks are decidedly whimsical, art books weighty, and perhaps the most intriguing is the inclusion of exotic furniture and carpets in this otherwise high-end clothing store. Founded in June 2012, Secret Location is the brainchild of world-traveler Carey Melnichuk and is known as Canada’s first luxury concept store. A singular location that embraces ingenuity, quality craftsmanship, and bold thinking by international creatives such as the legendary Antwerp Six member Ann Demeulemeester, Georgian designer David Koma, Kiev-based BEKh, Parisian shoe god Jean-Michel Cazabat, and perfumer Pozzo Di Borgo.

"My imagination has always been engulfed by unorthodox architecture, inhabited by anthropomorphic beings. Over the years, these stylistic fantasies have personified into a family of characters each with their own unique individuality.”

Scarlet Splendour’s furniture has been on display at Secret Location since this past April. The brand, created by siblings Ashish Bajoria and Suman Kanodia launched their inaugural collaboration with the quirky Cibic. The Vanilla Noir Collection was inspired by Italian masterpieces from the 14th century to the 1930s utilizing the Indian handicraft style of ivory inlay. Cibic’s collection replaced the ivory pieces with moulded resin pieces and to date, he has designed seven collections and more than 80 products for the company.

Cibic is a 33-year-old product designer based in Venice who is known for his love of anthropomorphic and joyful shapes. He works in a variety of mediums including ceramics, and with many luxury brands (Beck’s, Benetton Group, Nespresso, Levi’s, Nike), and artisans. Most known internationally for his Domsai ‘deskfriend’ terrariums, the defunct AAAAAAAAAA clothing line which focused on suspender pants, NasoVaso 365-day research project, and the enveloping the TIM Towers in Rome. In Vancouver for annual IDS (Interior Design Show), Cibic spoke and presented pieces from his Il Paradiso Dei Sogni collection of ceramic fictional anthropomorphic animals. “It’s a collection of dreamlike scenarios of eight animals that live in this kind of paradise where they constantly make love,” he explains.

After IDS had wrapped, Melnichuk hosted Cibic at Secret Location with an intimate event and invited select media and VIP customers. Over the course of an hour, this lanky energetic Italian managed to encapsulate his prolific design career into a witty and entertaining presentation with slides and video. He shared stories of his youth and how he went through phases of obsession while deciding what to do as a career. His youthful dream of being an artist destroyed after viewing Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, followed by a desire to be the Catholic Pope, and then basketball great Michael Jordan. His White Donky and Black Donky were perhaps the most beloved and photographed pieces at both IDS and Secret Location. These hybrid characters from the Il Paradiso dei Sogni collection are large ceramic creations

celebrate the season in

wintery whistler By Nathan Fong

T

he holiday season has arrived and what better place than to celebrate in our wintery backyard. Located in our neighbouring famed ski resort of Whistler, two hours drive north of Vancouver, Bearfoot Bistro has been creating stellar Canadian farm-to-table cuisine since 1995. Home to one of the resort’s most renowned restaurants, it’s home to the ever-so-charming, effervescent and bon-vivant proprietor Andre Saint-Jacques, his chef-extraordinaire Executive Chef Melissa Craig and their wunderkind Executive Pastry Chef Dominic Fortin. Dedicated to all the good things in life, SaintJacques is as passionate about pleasure as he is about new experiences, stunning cuisine, attentive service, and the virtues of a spectacular wine list. Meanwhile Craig’s culinary philosophy combines simplicity and sophistication with an element of surprise. Having established herself as one of the top names in Canadian cuisine, she is a commanding presence in her vast dedicated open kitchen, and is devoted to sourcing out the best seasonal ingredients both from home and unique products from abroad. With many organic farm producers in the neighbouring Pemberton Valley mainly supplying the restaurant, you can expect some brilliant and colourful dishes from Craig’s creative kitchen brigade. Likewise from the talented pastry kitchen of the youthful Quebecois Fortin.

The restaurant, with its inviting modernist and elegant chalet-style dining room, is showcased by the expansive open kitchen. Downstairs, in the impressive 20,000-bottle cellar, there is a showcasing 24 seat private dining room where guests can experience the thrill of sabering a bottle of Champagne, or don down parkas to keep warm in the country’s only permanent ice room as they sample an exhilarating flight of sub-zero vodkas housed in solid ice shelves. Craig showcases her talent in an a la carte menu, but it is her tasting menus that excel, paired with exquisite wines from their heady collection. Truly one of Canada’s top culinary experiences, their website states it all, “A Fork, a glass, a drop of magic…experience The Bearfoot Bistro. n

BC Wine AWArds PlAtinum Winners Karen GilliS Winemaker 2016 riesling Red Rooster Winery

“With spirit and character, this wine has a fresh vibrancy as it moves into a lemon curd flavour, which is distinct for a Riesling. It has a bright attack of fruit that finishes quite balanced on the palate. The vineyard gives us the best fruit, therefore we do our best to leave it alone. Riesling is my favourite wine to drink, so we spend a little more time ensuring that it shows its very best.”

Patricia leSlie Estate Manager 2015 Syrah Sandhill Wines

“The 2015 Syrah is a dry, medium- to full-bodied wine with soft tannins, yet it has a juicy-mouth feel (as a Syrah should!). Ripe fruit flavours of blueberry, dark plum and black cherry are accented by notes of chocolate and a spicy black current finish. In this case it’s truly “terroir-driven,” combining grapes from our Vanessa Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley — where granite and sage around the vineyards enhance the grapes’ earthy qualities — with grapes from Sandhill Vineyard in Oliver, where the grapes take on more subtle and well-rounded qualities.” 90

WeS JohnSon Winemaker 2014 chardonnay Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery

“Our award-wining 2014 Chardonnay starts with a great nose with huge aromatics that jump from the glass. There are notes of citrus, honeysuckle and melon, with a hint of gentle oak. The long-lingering finish is very pleasant with a hint of creaminess. The uniqueness of this wine starts in the vineyard — it consists of 100 per cent estate fruit from a single vineyard in Creston.”

daniel Bontorin

Winemaker 2016 Gamay noir Volcanic Hills Estate Winery “2016 was a great growing year, so I had above average grapes to work with. I kept things cool during the winemaking process to enhance the flavours. There aren’t many Gamays in BC to choose from, making our Gamay Noir unique. It has a fruity nose, it’s lower in alcohol and easy to drink, and finishes fresh with a soft smooth flavour. It can be enjoyed chilled and it pairs with a wide variety of food.”

92

Galen Barnhardt Winemaker 2016 Pinot noir reserve Monte Creek Ranch Winery

“The beauty of this wine is how hands-off we were able to be in making it. The fruit was absolutely gorgeous when it came in, so it was obvious this Pinot Noir would be special. Our job really was to get out of the way and try to respect the fruit and terroir as much as possible. The finished product has gobs of floral character, with all sorts of potpourri and dried rose petal notes. There is a real freshness to the wine, with sweeter cherry and raspberry notes mingling with savoury dried herbs and pencil shavings. It’s awfully pretty.”

91

david SaySomSacK Winemaker Sparkling Brut See Ya Later Ranch

“With hints of lemon zest, lime effervescence, tropical fruit, traces of peaches and stone fruits, this Brut is a fresh and lively wine, where the fruit shows through without taking over. It has a pleasantly long-lingering finish and the small bubbles give it an almost mousse-like effervescence. In making this wine, the fruit was treated very gently, and pressed softly to allow the juice to run freely.

t was an unforgettable evening of philanthropy, entertainment, and excitement. The 27th annual Evening of Caring Gala raised much-needed funds for Eagle Ridge Hospital and attendees arrived in their finest and did not disappoint with donations totaling over $1.2 million dollars. Held at the Molson Canadian Theatre at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver, the gala offered an elegant evening which included a champagne reception, sit down dinner, live and silent auction, exciting draws, and an amazing show. The gala was a sold out event; over 390 arriving guests were treated to valet service and a red carpet receiving line with greetings from Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation’s Board. Once inside guests mingled at the champagne reception and posed with friends at the fun green-screen photo station which produced keepsake photos of themselves in an operating room setting. As guests made their way to their seats, a fantastic flash mob performance by The Source Dance Company signaled the start of the evening.

Gala co-hosts, Global TV’s Kaitlyn Herbst and Cathy Cena of Tri-City Community TV, were engaging and led a lively game of ‘Head & Tail’ with the audience complete with a $1,000 cash prize. Recent BC Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, Diane Lines, delighted with a performance during dinner from her award winning show ‘Jump’. After a delectable three course plated dinner from the Hard Rock culinary team, all were invited to visit the ‘Sweet Station’ for a well-deserved post-repast indulgence. To be followed by a trip to the gin tasting bar which was constructed wholly of ice, for a specialty cocktail. The Live & Silent Auction, as well as a thrilling Fund-A-Need segment, engaged and encouraged the audience to open their wallets and help fund the purchase of three life-saving pieces of equipment; a Cardiac Echo Machine, an Airseal System, and a Resusci Anne simulator mannequin.

Oenophiles relished the opportunity to participate in the featured Wall of Wine Draw. Different from other wine draws, guests purchased elegantly numbered bottle stoppers at $100 each with only 100 stoppers available. At the end of the night, one number was drawn to reveal the winner of the 100 bottles of wine with a value of over $1,700. Sharon Perry, local accountant and daughter of Bruce Kehler, who passed away suddenly in April 2017, spoke during the evening’s keynote address of her family’s experience at Eagle Ridge Hospital where her father was treated. At the end of the evening, Sharon made her way up on stage again, this time accompanied by her family to make an extraordinary announcement - the naming of the Bruce Kehler Cardiology Department..

My family and I are hoping to demonstrate our thanks and appreciation by honouring my dad’s spirit through a pledge of $1 million to expand the cardiology department at Eagle Ridge Hospital.” The news was greeted with appreciation by Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation’s executive director Charlene Giovannetti-King. "We are overjoyed by the generosity of Sharon and the Kehler family,” said Giovannetti-King. "This leadership gift honours Bruce Kehler and exemplifies his life-long commitment to helping the Tri-Cities and many communities around the world." The donation is the foundation’s largest in its 35-year history. n

Selfies to the Extreme

L

ana Turner, Veronica Lake, Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Lucille Ball, Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth.

What do all these Iconic stars of yesteryear have in common? The image above is a clue and yes, they were all Pinup Girls, or delicious “cheesecakes” as they were also called, at one point in their illustrious and memorable acting careers.

Harris Van

98

B O U L E VA R D

The excuse given at the time was to help in the war effort. Rita Hayworth’s photos were taken across the Pacific to Hawaii by troops in 1941. Rita’s two brothers both served in WWII. Veronica Lake, at the urging of the US government, changed her hairstyle to encourage women working in war industry factories to follow her lead. Altruistic as this all seems, the upside of being a pinup girl was that your popularity rose and rose swiftly. Katherine Hepburn became a pinup girl to boost her declining movie roles after the war. Ingrid Bergman went on to star in Casablanca, some say, after becoming a popular pinup girl. Betty Grable became the most popular and best paid of all the pinup girls earning $300,000 per year after the war, in which Twentieth Century Fox had sent out five million copy’s of her pinup to distribute to the troops. Carole Landis, should you remember, was the female lead in the film One Million BC and had the likely sobriquet of “The Chest” because of her curvy pinup girl figure. We digress from our dreams developed by staring at these posters on our bunk tops, slanted mid century ceilings and mess hall walls to notice today that the pinup industry is alive and well and instead of the readily available internet pictures on sites such as IMDB and other reputable branding web addresses, you can now get your own special pinup of yourself or your significant lover right here in Vancouver’s downtown at a wonderfully creative company called Divine Pin-ups run by a super creative and stylish Brenda Bezell. Check it out, and while exploring your exhibitionist side just perhaps you might benefit even more like the Balls and Grable’s of yesteryear! www.divinepinups.com n
